Less than a month ago, Daniel Kramer, a rock photographer who captured Bob Dylan going electric, died at 91. For six months in 1964, Kramer dialed the office of Dylan's manager, Albert Grossman, to ask if he could photograph Dylan, a rising star at the time. Finally, Grossman said yes. A one-hour shoot morphed into a five-hour shoot, culminating in a 366-day photographic journey where Kramer gained unparalleled access to Dylan. He captured rare behind-the-scenes images of the artist at home, on tour, and at recording sessions. Kramer’s images were soon popping up in publications around the world. Daniel Kramer the photographer who took this photograph of Bob Dylan has died. Dylan looked like this when he came over from Woodstock to see the Friday night moves. We were a small crowd in those days I often sat near him. After the movie people would run to their dorms and get harmonicas and try to get him to play. In another story I went to the Newport folk festival the year hr went electric. I remember sitting on the grass behind the seating and thinking there is nothing shocking about this. Farewell to #danielkramer at 91. He was the last of a triumvirate of great photographers - #jimmarshall #barryfeinstein who had early access to #bobdylan in the 60s Woodstock years. We published the monograph of their work Early Dylan in 1999 (front cover Feinstein back cover Kramer). Kramer provided the iconic photos for Dylan’s albums #bringingitallbackhome and #highway61revisited The last photo in the book taken in 1965 revealed that Dylan did have a sense of humour and Kramer wrote for the book: ‘I learned early on that Bob Dylan doesn’t like to pose for pictures in the studio. It was only after much urging that he finally agreed to this session. think it was worth it for both of us. Later, Bob selected this picture for his tours and then for the promotion of the film Don’t Look Back. It was also the jacket image of my first book about Dylan and then became a poster and postcard. We are celebrating the life and incredible legacy of work of our friend and photographer Daniel Kramer, who died this week. Mentored by W. Eugene Smith and Philippe Halsman, Kramer was a dedicated photojournalist whose work appeared in LIFE, Time, and Rolling Stone. In 1964, Kramer saw Bob Dylan perform on the Steve Allen show and later that year met and photographed Dylan in Woodstock. After seeing the initial portraits, Dylan invited Kramer on the road and asked him to continue photographing him. As Kramer said, “A good photographer, a good writer, a good historian always says yes. So I said yes.” Kramer would later photograph the album covers for "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Highway 61 Revisited" in 1965 and his well-known book, BOB DYLAN: A Portrait Of The Artist's Early Years was published in 1991 and was the first major book about Dylan. These photographs were the subject of a solo exhibition at Staley-Wise Gallery in 2005 and examples were exhibited by or included in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The International Center of Photography, The Morgan Library, George Eastman House, The National Portrait Gallery, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 1. Today I am saddened to learn about the death of famed New York-born photographer and film-maker, Daniel Kramer. In my previous roles with both Taschen and Fahey/Klein Gallery, I was fortunate enough to spend time with Dan in person and on long amusing phone calls. Perhaps best known for his photographs of Bob Dylan, Kramer’s images are recognized worldwide and have been featured on Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited, Biograph, The Bob Dylan Song Book, and Bringing It All Back Home, which earned a Grammy nomination and was chosen by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Album Covers of All Time. On January 13, 1965 Bob Dylan returned to Columbia Studio A (799 7th Ave.) to cut Bringing It All Back Home, the most ambitious album he’d yet made. It was the first album to combine his increasingly sophisticated songwriting with the sound of rock & roll, and upon its release in March it polarized the traditional folk audience. This is where folk rock begins, a term Dylan reportedly hated. Wie manipulativ kann Erziehung sein? Und welche Rolle spielt Sprache dabei? Sprache ist das zentrale Medium in der Vermittlung gesellschaftlicher Werte, die in KASPAR in den unterschiedlichen Formen von Erziehung und Disziplinierung auftreten: als Förderung, Forderung, Überforderung; als Belohnung, Belehrung, Bestrafung etc. Doch auch wenn Peter Handke schreibt, dass das Stück ebenso „Sprechfolterung“ heißen könnte, steckt es doch voller Liebe zum Leben.
