On this date in 2005, Jack White married British model and musician Karen Elson. The wedding took place in a canoe on the Amazon River in Manaus, Brazil, and was officiated by a shaman.ย  White first met Elson on the set of the music video for The White Stripes' song "Blue Orchid" in March 2005. Elson was cast in the video, and their professional encounter ultimately blossomed into a romantic relationship, culminating in their marriage later that year. The couple parted ways in June 2011. While they did not publicly detail specific reasons for their separation, they have consistently emphasised that their split was amicable. White and Elson announced their divorce in a rather unique manner by hosting a "divorce party" the same year as their sixth wedding anniversary. The legal finalisation of their divorce occurred in 2013. Slides: 1. Jack White and Karen Elson (pic: British Vogue). 2-4. White and Elson by Annie Leibovitz. 5. Elson in "Blue Orchid". 6. The album explores themes of heartbreak, loss, and self discovery, which are commonly associated with the emotional aftermath of a divorce. #JackWhiteKarenElson #RocknrollSocmedtelling

Less than a month ago, Daniel Kramer, a rock photographer who captured Bob Dylan going electric, died at 91. For six months in 1964, Kramer dialed the office of Dylan's manager, Albert Grossman, to ask if he could photograph Dylan, a rising star at the time. Finally, Grossman said yes. A one-hour shoot morphed into a five-hour shoot, culminating in a 366-day photographic journey where Kramer gained unparalleled access to Dylan. He captured rare behind-the-scenes images of the artist at home, on tour, and at recording sessions.ย  Kramerโ€™s images were soon popping up in publications around the world. He also shot cover photos for two of Dylanโ€™s best-known albums, 1965's ๐˜‰๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜๐˜ต ๐˜ˆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ and ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ 61 ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ. On this day in 2011, a rare 1979 Led Zeppelin t-shirt used as a backstage pass for the band's concert at Knebworth House in Herfordshire, England, sold for a stunning $10,000 via eBay. Kyle Ermatinger, who sold the garment through his online store Stormcrow Vintage, was blown away by the final price garnered on eBay. "When I got the sale notification, my jaw hit the floor. Given this shirt may be one of the only ones in existence, the price tag is completely justifiable. It's a rock relic, beyond rare." Ermatinger bought the shirt for $123 from the family who originally printed the 1979 tees. "At the time, I thought I may have overpaid, until I got back home, looked it up online and noticed it was ranked No. 1 as the rarest Zeppelin t-shirt," he recalls. The mystery buyer, who declined to comment on the transaction, lives in Australia. Speaking about band t-shirts, RushOrderTees conducted a fresh study in 2021 to find the most popular band worn on t-shirts. They collected data by surveying 1,017 people who possess band t-shirts. The result? The most popular band to sport on a t-shirt was AC/DC--21.4% of the participants said they own at least one of their shirts. The other top five contenders were Aerosmith, Queen, Pink Floyd, and Green Day. Nirvana and Metallica fell just short of the Top 10 at 13.2% each--both were beat by Ariana Grande. How many of the iconic t-shirts seen here are in your collection? #MostIconicBandTees #RocknrollSocmedtelling

This month in 1977, two albums that were considered foundational for punk rock were just released: The Clash's ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฉ and The Stranglers' ๐˜™๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ด. 1977 is widely regarded as one of the most significant years in the history of punk rock, largely because of the explosion of influential albums and the emergence of key bands that defined that genre, which not only solidified the sound and style of punk music but also propelled it into the mainstream consciousness in the UK, the US, and beyond. The cultural impact of these releases was immense, providing a soundtrack to a youth movement characterized by a rebellious spirit and a DIY ethos. The music was often simple, fast-paced, and direct, reflecting social and political discontent of the time. The year 1977 was also pivotal because it saw punk music becoming more than just a musical genre; it became a cultural movement that influenced fashion, art, and attitudes. Here's my top ten 1977's punk rock albums, in no particular order: 01. The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus 02. The Clash - The Clash 03. Talking Heads - 77 (back sleeve) 04. Ramones - Rocket to Russia 05. Television - Marquee Moon (the Robert Mapplethorpe photo of Television before Richard Lloyd put it through the colour copier) 06. Dead Boys - Young Loud and Snotty 07. X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage Up Yours! (from their performance on BBC's Top of the Pops in 1978) 08. The Jam - In the City (from their performance on BBC's Top fo the Pops in 1977) 09. Steven Meisel and Madonna. Born in 1954, Steven Meisel became arguably the most important and prolific fashion photographer of his generation. Known for his visionary, striking and provocative fashion visuals, Meisel was a passionate since a fragile age, turning a childhood obsession with fashion illustration into such a fine photographic talent that only a chosen few can stand shoulder to shoulder next to him in the fashion department. Working mostly for both Italian and US version of Vogue, Meisel discovered and popularized a number of influential supermodels, makeup artists and designers, including such names as Ross Van Der Heide, Naomi Campbell, Franรงois Nars, Christy Turlington, Laura Mercier and Linda Evangelista. It should also be noted that Stevenโ€™s work with Madonna is one of the brightest moments of this photographerโ€™s career. #StevenMeisel #RockTheHouse #RocknrollSocmedtelling

On this date in 2005, a life-size bronze statue designed by Paul Daly of Phil Lynott was unveiled on Harry Street in Dublin. The ceremony was attended by his former Thin Lizzy band members Gary Moore, Brian Robertson, and Scott Gorham. Lynott, Thin Lizzy's ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฐ leader, was composer or co-composer of almost all of the band's songs, and the first black Irishman to achieve commercial success in the field of rock music. As well as being multiracial, Thin Lizzy drew their early members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities during the ethno-nationalist conflict The Troubles. ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ magazine describes the band as distinctly hard rock "far apart from the braying mid-70s metal pack." ๐˜ˆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜”๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค has written that "As the band's creative force, Lynott was a more insightful and intelligent writer than many of his ilk, preferring slice-of-life working class dramas of love and hate influenced by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and virtually all of the Irish literary tradition. In the 1980s, Lynott increasingly suffered drug-related problems, particularly an addiction to heroin. In 1985, he had a final chart success with Gary Moore, "Out in the Fields", followed by the minor hit "Nineteen", before his death in 1986. Jamie Reid, the British artist and political activist whose iconic designs for the Sex Pistols became synonymous with the punk rock aesthetic, has died aged 76. His gallerist John Marchant confirmed his death alongside Reid's family. In a statement he was described as an "artist, iconoclast, punk, hippie, rebel and romantic. James leaves behind a beloved daughter Rowan, a granddaughter Rose, and an enermous legacy." Reid created the ransom-note style while he was designing Suburban Press, a countercultural publication which he began in 1970. He was inspired by the alternative politics of the late 1960s, and did graphic design for the 1974 book He was educated at John Ruskin Grammar School in Croydon. With his classmate, Malcolm McLaren, he took part in a sit-in at Croydon Art School in the late 60s. Reid explained his ethos in 2015: โ€œOur culture is geared towards enslavementโ€”for people to perform pre-ordained functions, particularly in the workplace. On this date in 2003, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‹๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ณ ran a front-page story claiming that the body of Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards had been found. Fishermen in angling contest discovered bones half buried in mud on the riverbank near Avonmouth, Bristol, England. The claim, however, appears to be an instance of tabloid sensationalism. No subsequent media reports or official statements from the band or Edwards' family corroborate this story. In fact, sightings and theories about Edwards' whereabouts have continued to appear sporadically over the years. Earlier, not long after Edwards was declared missing in 1995, Edwards was reportedly spotted in a market in Goa, India, and on the islands of Fuerventura and Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain. In 2005, the ๐˜‰๐˜‰๐˜Š reported on a theory that Edwards had been living in Israel after his disappearance, based on an investigation conducted by a private detective. On 23 November 2008, Edwards' status became officially "presumed dead". This week in 1985, one of the most iconic symbols of America's transportation, Route 66, was officially decommissioned, meaning it was no longer part of the U.S. Highway System and was replaced by the Interstate Highway System. U.S. Route 66, also known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System. Established on 11 November 1926, Route 66 originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending in Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 4,000 kilometres.ย  The selection of the number "66" was largely arbitrary. The number 60 was originally proposed for the Chicago-to-Los Angeles route, but a dispute arose with the organisers of U.S. Route 60, a highway with a similar routing. As a compromise, the number 66 was assigned to the highway. It was recognised in popular culture by both the 1946 hit song by Bobby Troup, "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66", and the ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ 66 TV series, which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964. Why 1991 is often considered a significant and pivotal year for alternative music? 1. The Emergence of Grunge. It marked the mainstream breakthrough of the grunge genre, particularly with the release of Nirvana's album ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ. The single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" brought grunge into the mainstream consciousness, influencing a generation of musicians and reshaping the rock music landscape. 2. Alternative Rock Goes Mainstream. Alongside Nevermind, other alternative rock albums achieved significant commercial success in 1991. Soundgarden (๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ), Pearl Jam (๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ), and Red Hot Chilli Pepper (๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜น ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฌ) released albums that received critical acclaim, solidifying the rise of alternative rock as a dominant force in the music industry. 3. Diversity and Innovation. The alternative music scene in 1991 was characterised by a wide range of innovative and diverse release. Bands like R.E.M. (๐˜–๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ), Pixies (๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ), and My Bloody Valentine (๐˜“๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด) pushed boundaries and explored new sounds, showcasing the creative and experimental nature of alternative music. 4. Cultural Impact. The alternative music movement represented a shift away from the excesses of the 80s, embracing a more raw, authentic, and anti-establishment ethos; it was not just a musical phenomenon but also had a significant cultural impact. Slides: 1 - R.E.M. performing the first single from ๐˜–๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ, "Losing My Religion", on Dutch popshow, Countdown, 1991 2 - Pixies at Brixton Academy, London, performing "Trompe le Monde", 1991 3 - Nirvana performing the second single from ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ, "Come as You Are", Amsterdam, 1991 4 - Soundgarden performing the first single from ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, "Jesus Christ Pose", at Lollapalooza, Seattle, 1992 5 - MBV's official video of "Only Shallow", the opening track from ๐˜“๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด 6 - Album cover of Pearl Jam's ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ 7 - Album cover of RHCP's ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜น ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฌ #1991TheYearAltRockBroke #RocknrollSocmedtelling

On this day in 2007, Amy Winehouse, Madonna, and Arctic Monkeys were among the winners of Ivor Novello Awards. Winehouse won the Best Contemporary Song for her hit "Rehab". The following year, "Rehab" won Song Of The Year at Grammy Awards. "Rehab" was released in 2006 as the lead single from Winehouse's second studiio album, ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ. The inspiration behind "Rehab" stems from Winehouse's real-life experiences and struggles with substance abuse. The lyrics reflect her defiant and rebellious attitude towards seeking help for addiction. The song delves into the conflict between Winehouse's own desire to continue her destructive habits and the pressure she felt from those around her to enter a rehabilitation program. "Rehab" gained widespread attention and critical acclaim for its catchy melody, soulful vocals, and the raw honesty of Winehouse's lyrics. The song showcases her unique blend of jazz, soul, and R&B influences, which became signature elements of her musical style. The success of "Rehab" propelled Amy Winehouse to international stardom, earning her numerous accolades and awards. However, the song also became somewhat synonymous with her personal struggles and publicised battles with addiction. A few years later, in 2011, Amy Winehouse's died from accidental alcohol poisoning when she resumed drinking after a period of abstinence. It is believed that her last words were: "I don't want to die." THE STONES CRAWDADDY-O On this date in 1963, The Rolling Stones started a Sunday night residency at The Crawdaddy Club, located at the back of The Station Hotel in Surrey, England. The Stones were paid ยฃ24 ($41) for the gig. This first gig was not a commercial success; Giorgio Gomelsky, the club promoter, had to plead with customers of the main hotel to attend, offering two entries for the price of one ticketโ€”it ended up with a total of 66 people. And it was at the Crawdaddy Club The Stones met The Beatles on 14 April 1963. โ€œHalfway through the set we kind of glanced up, and there were four silhouetted leather-clad persons standing just in front of the bandstand in amongst all these kids who were all dancing and playing around,โ€ Bill Wyman recalled, noting that John, Paul, George and Ringo were โ€œbeing totally ignored by the audience.โ€ โ€œI turned round to Charlie [Watts], and I said, โ€˜Itโ€™s the Beatles!โ€™ Theyโ€™d had two or three big No. 1 hits and they were like the rave of England at that time. So when we finished our set, we got chatting to them and had beers, and they stayed for the second set." After the show, the two groups went back to the Chelsea flat shared by Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, and Keith Richards. "We hung out all night playing blues music, just talking about music and became great mates.โ€ Slides: 01) The Stones performing "Not Fade Away" (Buddy Holly cover) at the Mike Douglas TV Show, 1964, first time they visited USA. 02) The Stones at the Ed Sullivan Show performing "Around and Around" (Chuck Berry), their other TV performance while in the US. 03) The Stones in Holland, 1964. This is Joe Corrรฉ, the son of punk propagandist Malcolm McLaren and iconic designer Vivienne Westwood. Six years ago today, he set fire to punk clothes and paraphernalia he valued at between $6.2-$12.5 million, on the 40th anniversary of the Sex Pistols' debut single "Anarchy in the UK". "Punk was never meant to be nostalgic," Corrรฉ said, addressing a crowd of around 100 people on the bank of the River Thames, London. "Punk has become another marketing tool to sell you something you don't need," told Corrรฉ, who himself co-founded lingerie brand Agent Provocateur. Sex Pistols guitarist Glen Matlock told Sky News that Corrรฉ's protest was "dopey". "I want to paraphrase Monty Pythonโ€”he's not the savior, he's a naughty boy. I think that Joe is not the anti-Christ, I think he's a nincompoop," Matlock added. Hardcore punk veteran Henry Rollins wrote in response to the event, "Corrรฉ might think he has taught everyone a lesson in what punk's all about, but all he did was show off his massive egos and how much he's lost the plot. Maybe it was something else, too. Perhaps it was an emotional response to the fact that McLaren cut Corrรฉ out of his will. It doesn't matter now. It's yesterday's garbage. Ooh, how punk." UNDER HELLS ANGELS' THUMB Pekan ini, jika saja Meredith Hunter masih hidup, maka ia bakal berusia 71 tahun. This week in 1974, Blondie appeared at CBGB in New York City, under the name Blondie for the first time. Founded by guitarist Chris Stein and former Playboy Bunny Deborah "Debbie" Harry, Blondie became one of the most original and groundbreaking bands of the punk and new wave music scene. Teaming up with drummer Billy O'Connor and bassist Fred Smith in July 1974, Stein and Harry formed the band Angel and the Snake. After only one show, they renamed themselves Blondie, a name they derived from a trucker who catcalled "Hey, Blondie!" in reference to Harry. The band then became a staple at CBGB. Blondie put out their debut album, ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ, in late 1976 and found success in Australia. That lead to a second album in 1978, ๐˜—๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด, which did well in Europe. But it was their third album release, ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, later that same year, which broke the band in America. The single "Heart of Glass", released in early 1979, became a worldwide sensation. Blondie disbanded after the release of its sixth studio album, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, in 1982. They re-formed in 1997, achieving renewed success with the single "Maria" in 1999. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Blondie has sold around 40 million records worldwide and is still active. The band's latest album was released in 2017, ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ. ACCA DACCA LANE On this date in 2004, Melbourne's Lord Mayor John So launched AC/DC Lane with the words, "As the song says, there is a highway to hell, but this is a laneway to heaven. Let us rock." Bagpipers then played "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)". The street was formerly named Corporation Lane. As a tribute to the Australian veteran rockers AC/DC the lane was then renamed. The renaming was permitted by a unanimous vote of the City of Melbourne. There's a more rock 'n' roll story behind this AC/DC Lane actually. Observant Melbournians may remember that this has ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง happened before. In 2004, street artist Knifey installed a cheeky street signed over the original that not only included the soon-to-be-official slash ("/"), but an actual lightning bolt in trademark council blue. Unsurprisingly, this was stolen by a diehard fan soon after. Later, the artist (Jayszun Vanderwerwerff) worked with Melbourne City to officially re-install the sign. "Melbourne City Council has demonstrated time and again its commitment to showcase both the cityโ€™s laneways, and the street art that brings so many to visit the City of Melbourne," Knifey said. "They have seen the benefit of encouraging legal street art in the city, and have been incredibly supportive of this project." Let there be rockโ€”and Acca Dacca Lane! Slides: 1. 53 years ago today, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, opens on a patch of farmland in White Lake, a hamlet in the upstate New York town of Bethel. Held for 3 days, 15 till 18 August 1969, the festival has become widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history as well as a defining event for the countercultureโ€”Hippies and Flowerโ€”generation. Woodstock attracted an audience of more than 400,000. 32 acts performed outdoors despite sporadic rain. Promoters John Roberts, Michael Lang, and a few others, originally envisioned the festival as a way to raise funds to build a recording studio and rock 'n' roll retreat near the town of Woodstock, New York. The longtime artists' colony was already a home base for Bob Dylan and other musicians. Despite their relative inexperience, the young promoters managed to sign a roster of top acts, including the Jefferson Airplane, the Who, the Grateful Dead, Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more. Plans for the festival were on the verge of foundering, however, after both Woodstock and the nearby town of Wallkill denied permission to hold the event. Dairy farmer Max Yasgur came to the rescue at the last minute, giving the promoters access to his 600 acres of land in Bethel, some 50 miles from Woodstock. Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Jethro Tull, Free, The Byrds, The Doors, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, and Joni Mitchell were asked to perform, but later either declined or cancelled. Later music festivals inspired by Woodstock's success failed to live up to its standard and the festival still stands for many as an example of America's 1960s youth counter culture at its best. In total, there were 3Woodstock festivals: 1969, 1994, and 1999. The first one is the original, the second one, it was held to mark their 25th anniversary. Two Woodstock veterans, Joe Cocker and Santana, they performed again, this time together with Metallica, Aerosmith, NIN, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Bob Dylan. Michael Lang, one of Woodstock's founders, has just died from cancer in January 2022 at the age of 77. #WoodstockMusicAndArtFair #RocknrollSocmedtelling

I HATE PINK FLOYD This month, 47 years ago, Bernard Rhodes, one of the design contributors for Let It Rock boutique (owned by Malcolm McLaren & Vivienne Westwood, before they founded SEX), spotted nineteen-year-old John Lydon wearing "I Hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt. Lydon was then asked to come to a nearby pub in the evening to meet Steve Jones and Paul Cook. This would become one of the most significant moments in punk rock history. According to Jones, "He came in with green hair. I thought he had a really interesting face. I liked his look. He had his 'I Hate Pink Floyd' t-shirt on, and it was held together with safety pins. John had something special, but when he started talking he was a real arseholeโ€”but smart." When the pub closed, the group moved on to SEX, where Lydon, who had given little thought to singing, was convinced to improvise along to Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" on the shop jukebox. Though the performance drove the band members to laughter, McLaren convinced them to start rehearsing with Lydon. The other reasons Lydon was asked to join the band, as described by Glen Matlock: "Everyone had long hair then, even the milkman, so what we used to do was if someone had short hair we would stop them in the street and ask them if they fancied themselves as a singer." For instance, Midge Ure (Rich Kids, Ultravox), claims to have been approached by McLaren, but to have refused the offer. With the search going nowhere, McLaren made several calls to New York to Richard Hell, who also turned down the invitation. Lydon later rechristened "Johnny Rotten by Jones, apparently because of his bad teeth. The band also settled on a name. After considering such as Le Bomb, Subterraneans, the Damned, Beyond, Teenage Novel, Kid Gladlove, they decided on Sex Pistols. Sex Pistols' first gig was at Saint Martins College in London on 6 November 1975. Slides: 1. Johnny Rotten wearing "I Hate Pink Floyd". 2. Steve Jones. 3. Paul Cook. 4. If your weekend is filled with wounded egos, loneliness, bitterness, blame, and recriminations, trust Leonard Cohen and good whisky (the order is interchangeable). You'll still feel sad. But at least: more romantic :) I think this cover of Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Naomi (YouTube account: Ah! Sun-flower) is one of the bestest ever. Just like the original, it's still subtle, spare, and quietly devastating. "Famous Blue Raincoat" is the sixth track on Leonard Cohen's third album, ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜“๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ (1971). It's delivered in Cohen's warm, recitative style, the song takes the form of a letter (partly composed in an unusual poetic metre called amphibrachs). The lyric tells the story of a love triangle among the speaker, a woman named Jane, and the male addressee, who is identified only briefly as "my brother, my killer". The lyrics contain references to the German love song "Lili Marlene", to Scientology, and to Clinton Street, Manhattan. Cohen lived there in the 1970s when it was a lively Latino area. Jennifer Warnes, she was a backup singer for Cohen in the early 70s, singles this out as one's of Cohen's best melodies: "Leonard isn't known for his great melodies, but he actually is a great melody writer. If you take the words off and just listen to the melodies, he's really, really good. It's just not known, because we're so distracted by the poetry." So, your last week's sorrowful Saturday, with beautiful whisky and Field Commander Cohen, did you ever go clear? #FamousBlueRaincoat #LeonardCohen #RocknrollSocmedtelling _______ Sources: Wikipedia, Songfacts, Financial Times, CBC.

This month, 40 years ago, Cocteau Twins released their debut album, ๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด. It peaked the top 5 of the UK Independent Albums Chart and received support from BBC Radio 1 radio host John Peel. ๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด is the only album the band recorded with original bassist Will Heggie. Prior to the album the band recorded a four-track session for John Peel in June 1982. including "Wax and Wane" and "Garlands". Scottish music historian, Martin C. Strong, noted the album was "hastily recorded" but also featured an "interesting fusion of monochromatic rhythms, textured guitar distortion, and early sampling technology. Billboard described the album as "dark post-punk". The Art Desk noted that "though they had their own voice, the debut's debt to Siouxsie and the Banshees was apparent." Cocteau Twins' roadie Collin Wallace recalled that "๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด was written off in the UK as another Siouxsie copy band, and Elizabeth (Fraser) was a huge Siouxsie fan." Spin wrote that the album "(sounds) like Siouxsie and the Banshees with echo and smeared mascara." Under the Radar stated that the album "represented a year zero for alternative guitar music," adding that songs like 'Wax and Wane' and 'But I'm Not' undoubtedly influenced a generation of effects pedalled guitar slingers decades on." The photograph on the front cover was conceived by Nigel Grierson when he was at college. It was part of a project on his graphic design course for alternative images for Siouxsie and the Banshees' debut album ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ. The New Zealand's gothic-folk art pop songstress, Aldous Harding, turned 32 today. Been a big fan since the first time I saw her at Laneway Festival in Singapore in 2018. Saw her for the second time in Sydney, right before the pandemic. Born Hannah Sian Topp, Aldous Harding, as what 4AD wrote on her profile, is an artist of rare calibre, does more than sing: she conjures a singular intensity. Her body and face a weapon of theatre, Harding dances with steeled fervor, baring her teeth like a Buranku puppet's gnashing grin. Harding comes from a musical family in Lyttelton, New Zealand; her mother is folk singer Lorina Harding. She was discovered while busking on a street by fellow musician Anika Moa. Her latest album, ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด, garnered much critical acclaim. Pitchfork says, "๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด, is a record of the portable solitude that Garielle Lutz writes about: It is opaque, surreal, and above all, lonely." As of 2020, Harding is based in Cardiff, Wales, where she had previously lived with partner and collaborator H. Hawkins. The video here, Harding performs "Designer" live at Le Guess Who in Utrecht, Holland, 2019. Happy birthday, ms Harding! Stay peculiarly enigmatic! #AldousHarding #RocknrollSocmedtelling

I was just introduced to this badass female-fronted punk rock unit around a week ago by @ededdy7. Been listening to them religiously ever since. A great reminiscence of Riot Grrrl. This Melbourne-based band, Amyl and the Sniffers, I find them like a deadly combo of Bikini Kill x Bratmobile with a mini portion of Peaches 'tude. Some music critics have been compared their sounds to Iggy Pop and the Stooges and The Damned (I agree with the latter one). However, the singer has cited a number of varying influences including Minor Threat, Ceremony, AC/DC, Sleaford Mods, Dolly Parton, and Cardi B. Consisting of Amy Taylor (vocal), Bryce Wilson (drums), Dec Martens (guitar), Fergus Romer (bass), their self-titled debut record won the Best Rock Album category at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019. Till today they've released two EPs, Giddy Up (2016) and Big Attraction (2017) and two albums, Amyl and the Sniffers (2019) and Comfort to Me (2021). Their interesting name came from the Australian slang for amyl nitrite (poppers, if you know what I mean heheh). Amy Taylor compared their music to the drug in an interview with Paul Glynn of the BBC: "In Australia we call poppers Amyl. So you sniff it, it lasts for 30 seconds and then you have a headacheโ€”and that 's what we're like!" Hey, they'll do Comfort to Me promo tour around Australia in July! The queen of Mojito Disco, Rรณisin Murphy, turned 49 today. I admire this lady oh-so much :) Before Lady Gaga hit the world with her eccentric style and persona, there was Rรณisin Marie Murphy, who essentially paved the road for Gaga. Not only her voice is so remarkable, Murphy is pure fabulous weirdness and always entertaining to watch. All kinds of unusual props and bizarre clothes are scattered around the stage before the band even goes on. AllMusic described Murphy as "a purveyor of adventurous, omnivorous pop that blended influences as far-flung as disco and hot jazz." Drowned in Sound wrote that "she's merged pop, house, and disco with an avant-garde sensibility and a stunning, shape-shifting visual output that never ceases to provoke." Think a hysterical combo of Roxy Music, Grace Jones, and the wham-glam New Romantics movement, you'll get Rรณisin Murphy. I was introduced to Murphy via "Sing It Back", when she was still a member of Moloko. Took me a while to like it. Till one day "Sing It Back" hit me hard, I then began my Rรณisรญn Murphy deep explorationโ€”and right away became a fan. Check out this wicked old school funky sh*t by turntable mad scientists, Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Founded in 1989, this collective of hip-hop DJs, were among the pioneers of the turntablism movement in the 1990s; turntablists create musical pieces by mixing samples from records, and using multiple turntables as instruments Began in San Fransisco the group started as Shadow of the Prophet, with DJ Q-bert, Mix Master Mike, and DJ Apollo. Later they added D-Styles and Shortkut, among others. Citing the underground vitality of turntablism and its distance from the comparatively stale commercial rap scene, Invisibl Skratch Piklz stated intent was to focus on the art of DJing (defined by skills such as cutting, scratching, and beat juggling) in order to develop and expand its musical potential. Beginning with a five-part series of mix tapes called the ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ, the group quickly evolved from a hybrid of more traditional trick DJing into an autonomous "turntable orchestra". The first fully formed examples of this emerging aesthetic, "Invasion of the Octopus People", appeared on the underground turntablist compendium ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‹๐˜‘, and was later included on Bill Laswell's similarly styled 1996's ๐˜ˆ๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ด. Q-Bert contributed turntable work on Kool Keith's immensely popular ๐˜‹๐˜ณ. ๐˜–๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ LP. In 1998, the Beastie Boys invited Mix Master Mike to cut it up on their ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ ๐˜•๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜บ album and subsequent tour. The Piklz performed their last show in July 2000. All previous members of the group have gone on to solo careers, most notably DJ Q-bert & Mix Master Mike, Shortkut, and DJ Disk. These days they just performed in some one-off events. This week in 2007, ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜น๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, the fourth studio album by The National, was released. Sold about 9,500 copies in its first week, ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜น๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ received widespread acclaim from music critics. It was named the best record of 2007 by Paste. The second track on the album, "Mistaken for Strangers", was number 92 on Rolling Stone's list of The 100 Best Songs of 2007. Pitchfork ranked the album number 17 in their annual end-of-the-year Top 50 Albums of 2007 list, as well as on Stylus Magazine's Top 50 Albums of 2007 list at number 5. I agree with what The Guardian wrote about the album: "๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜น๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ is as consistent, but by contrast a stately affair, full of rich but scrappy fanfaresโ€”the brass that crowns 'Fake Empire', the gently triumphant 'Apartment Story'โ€”an overt sonic celebration they rarely allow themselvesโ€”and Sufjan Stevens's unequivocally perfect piano line on 'Ada'. Bryan's drums are militaristic, precise and propulsive, often changing a song's direction, and the repeated, gradually modified hocketing guitar and unusual time signatures that colour Aaron and Bryce's guitar playing give ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜น๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ cohesion, turning it into an immersive world, in which you recognise instrumental parts such as neighbourhood touchstones. It speaks its own languageโ€”as all the best albums do." 54 years ago this month, the Rolling Stones released one of their most popular and recognisable songs: Jumpin' Jack Flash. Ranked at number 144 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and the 77th most celebrated song according to Acclaimed Music, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was perceived by some as the Rolling Stones' return to their blues roots after the baroque pop and psychedelia heard on their preceding albums ๐˜ˆ๐˜ง๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ (1966), ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด (1967) and especially ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ซ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต (1967). Keith Richards has stated that he and Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics while staying at Richard's country house, when they were awoken one morning by the clumping footsteps of his gardener Jack Dyer walking past the window. Surprised Jagger asked what it was, and Richards responded: "Oh, that's Jackโ€”that's jumpin' Jack." The lyrics evolved from there. Jagger told the Rolling Stone in 1995 that the song arose "out of all the acid of ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ซ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด. It's about having a hard time and getting out. Just a metaphor for getting out of all the acid things." While earlier, in 1968, Brian Jones described it as "getting back to ... the funky, essential essence" following the psychedelia of The line "I was born in a crossfire hurricane", was written by Richards, and refers to his being born amid the bombing and air raid sirens of Dartford, England, in 1943 during World War II. The Rolling Stones have played "Jumpin' Jack Flash" during every tour since its release. It is the song the band have played most frequently. Each song is bigger than on the last record in terms of starting off in one place and ending up in another,โ€ the vocalist and keyboardist Victoria Legrand told The Line Of Best Fit. โ€œWe just wanted the songs to be really big,โ€ the guitarist and backup vocalist Alex Scally added. โ€œWe were inspired by the very existence of certain albums like ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด on which every track is a big singular statement. Itโ€™s the same with ๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ by the Cure and ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ by Depeche Mode. ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ was ranked by many critics as one of 2012's best albums, and in August 2014, was recognised on Pitchfork's list of The 100 Best Albums of the Decade So Far, appearing at number 53. Rolling Stone said that "the melodies, guitarscapes, and thrift-shop organ swells make for exquisite comfort." Pitchfork gave the album a Best New Album designation and praised the interplay between Legrand and Scally, writing that the two "sound in perfect sync: his nimble riffs punctuate her long, drawn-out notes to add depth and layered rhythm to the tracks." While The A.V. Club gave the album an A-, saying "๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ takes what works before and intensifies it" and that with the record, "they have mastered their sultry formula." I saw them in Sydney in 2013, during their ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ promo tour. I was in total awe from the beginning till the end. A perfect hazy dream pop for me. A few days ago, on 9 May, it was Dave Gahan's birthday. He turned 60. Gahan is one of my most favourite frontmen ever. When I had my clothing label, Suicide Glam, he was one of the role models for the design and fashion orientationโ€”together with David Bowie and Stray Cats. Gahan is ranked no. 73 on Q magazine's list of the 100 ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด and no. 27 of the 100 ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ100. Gahan is acknowledged for his "commanding presence on stage" and his "huge, deep baritone voice". With Depeche Mode, he released 14 albums, 3 albums with Soulsavers, and 2 solo albums: ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด (2003) & ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด (2007). He started his music career in March 1980 via the Composition of Sound with Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, and Andy Fletcher. Clarke asked Gahan to join the band after he heard him perform David Bowie's "Heroes". The band was soon renamed Depeche Mode. Gahan's persona on stage is influenced by Dave Vanian (The Damned). He has also credited David Bowie, James Brown, Elvis Presley, and Prince as influences. Gahan is a recovering heroin addict. He has survived four brushes with death, living up to the nickname "The Cat", which paramedics gave him during his roughest years in Los Angeles. In August 1993, he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists. A few months later, he suffered a minor-drug induced heart attack during a performance in New Orleans, leaving his bandmates to improvise an encore without him. Since 1997 Gahan has lived in New York City with his third wife, Jennifer Sklias Gahan. John Hughes' teen romcom ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜—๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ turned 36 this year. A cult classic starring Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, and Jon Cryer, ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜—๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ was named after a song by the Psychedelic Furs, & it is commonly identified as a "Brat Pack" film. The film's soundtrack has been acclaimed as among the most brilliant in modern cinema, features a re-recorded version of Furs' "Pretty in Pink". While Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's "If You Leave" became an international hit and charted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1986. I agree with what Los Angeles Times wrote: "What makes ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜—๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ such a satisfying, big-hearted film isn't its creaky story line or its somewhat unconvincing conclusion, but the way it lets us watch kids through their own eyes, exploring feelings instead of making caricatures of them. The movie neatly captures the nuances of youth, reminding us how the most casual remark can unleash a flood of insecurities." I included three of my most favourites songsโ€”well, actually, I like most (if not all) the songsโ€”in the movie soundtrack: Furs' "Pretty in Pink", Echo & The Bunnymen's "Bring On the Dancing Horses" and OMD's "If You Leave". Molly Ringwald was the one who took "Pretty in Pink" to John Hughes who then wrote the plot around the song's lyrics. But, according to Fur's singer, Richard Butler, Hughes muffed the meaning. On the surface, the song is a tender ode to a lovely girl, but it's actually about a girl who sleeps around a lot and thinks it makes her feel empowered somehow and popular. Meanwhile, "If You Leave", a smooth and gorgeous, OMD's signature synthpop melancholia. "One of the most influential, zeitgeist-capturing songs ever to be written," described Interview. The last one, what I love about "Bring On the Dancing Horses", it has a hazy, dreamily catchy chorus and a nice melody. At around this week, 47 years ago, Bruce Springsteen went into the studio to start recording ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜™๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ, his third studio album. As his effort to break into the mainstream, the album was a commercial success, peaking at number three on the Billboard 200 and eventually selling six million copies in the United States. Two singles were released from the album: "Born to Run" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out". ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜™๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ became one of a significant staple of album-oriented rock. The song "Born to Run" ranked number 21 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ˆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ and is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ. "Born to Run" captures the spirit of restless youth yearning to hit the road and live life to the fullest. Springsteen wrote the lyrics in his Long Branch, New Jersey, home in early 1974. One thing Springsteen is certain of is the fact that only together theyโ€”Wendy and himโ€”can break free from this small town. Fortunately, both of them share similar dreams. "Born to Run" had a universal appeal among like-minded people who were struggling to get out of their situations. Everybody wants to "move" as opposed to staying stagnant and rotting in one place. Springsteen encouraged all of us to "run". The video here, a nice cover by Social Distance Session ft. Paul Freeman. On this date in 1971 The Rolling Stones released their classic album ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜บ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด in the UK. It's the band's first release on their own label via Atlantic Records. The scandalous cover was designed by none other than Andy Warhol, who was paid $15,000 for his efforts. The album created controversy due to the provocative nature of the cover art. This iconic cover design features a close up a man's crotch in tight jeans, with a functional zipper and belt buckle. When the zipper is pulled down, it reveals the cover model's underwear. Warhol, while at a party in 1969, suggested the idea of using a real zipper to Mick Jagger, who then asked him to design the cover. Widely assumed to be that of Mick Jagger, the crotch photographed for the cover was actually that of actor Joe Dallesandro. The original cover was expensive to produce and damaged the vinyl record, so later re-issues featured just the outer photograph of the jeans. ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜บ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด also features the first usage of the tongue and lips logo of Rolling Stones Records, originally designed by John Pasche in 1970. ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜บ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด is considered one of the Rolling Stones' best albums. It was the band's first album to reach number one both the UK albums and US album charts, and has since achieved triple platinum certification in the US. The album is inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame and included in Rolling Stone magazine's Enjoy this sunny Sunday with a fun and refreshing indie rock, tongue-in-cheek post punk track by Wet Leg, "Chaise Longue". The Isle of Wright's Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers turn the style's deadpan irony on its head, pairing scrappy guitars and drums with dryly humorous lyrics. A decade before forming Wet Leg, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Teasdale and lead guitarist/vocalist Chambers met while they were students at Isle of Wright College. After graduation, they remained friends and tried a few different projects. The idea to have more fun with their music came to them in 2019 after seeing Idles perform at that year Isle of Wright festival, soon after, they became Wet Leg. Drawing inspiration from the Ronettes, Jane Birkin, Ty Segall, and Bjรถrk, they wrote playful yet incisive songs together as Teasdale learned to play guitar. After Wet Leg signed to Domino, the label issued "Chaise Lounge" as the duo's debut single in June 2021. Thanks its tongue-in-cheek post-punk and eye-catching video of "Chaise Lounge" it quickly became a viral success, racking up millions of streams and reaching number 27 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in the U.S. Wet Leg followed it that September with another track: "Wet Dream". The pair capped off 2021 with a handful of live dates and the release of two more singles, "Too Late Now" and "Oh No". All of these songs appeared on Wet Leg's self-titled debut album. Largely produced by Dan Carey, Wet Leg came out this month and balanced the band's wry singles with more vulnerable and melodic songs. 68 years ago today, Bill Haley and His Comets recorded one of the most significant songs in the rock 'n' roll history: Rock Around the Clock. #reposted from @thehydrantofficial: On this date in 1954, Bill Haley was at Pythian Temple studios in New York City, recorded the song that changed popular music history, a music composition that put rock 'n' roll on the map around the world: Rock Around the Clock. The song was used over the opening titles for the film ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‘๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ, and went on to be a world-wide No. 1 and the biggest selling pop single with sales over 25 million. The song entered the charts a further six times until 1974. Written by Max C. Freedman and James E. Myers, "Rock Around the Clock" was first recorded by Italian-American band Sonny Dae and His Knights. It was not the first rock and roll record, nor was it the first successful record of the genre, however Haley's recording nevertheless became an anthem for rebellious 1950s youth and is widely considered to be the song that, more than any other, brought rock and roll into mainstream culture around the world. The song is ranked No. 158 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The original full title of the song was "We're Gonna Rock Around the Clock Tonight!". This was later shortened to "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock" and finally ended up as "Rock Around the Clock". In 2018, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant." I came across Karen Dalton via ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜“๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด Spotify playlist a few days ago. Was so impressed. This short description really represents who she is: "Billie Holiday with a rural twang." A cult singer, 12-string guitarist, and banjo player of the New York 1960s folk revival, Karen Dalton still remains known to very few, despite counting the likes of Bob Dylan and Fred Neil among her acquaintances. This was partly because she seldom recorded, only making one album in the 1960sโ€”and that didn't come out until 1969, although she had been known on the Greenwich Village circuit since the beginning of the decade. It was also partly because, unlike other folk singers of the era, she was an interpreter who did not record original material. And it was also because her voice was too strange and inaccessible to pop audiences. Dalton grew up in Oklahoma moving to New York around 1960. Peter Stampfel of the Holy Modal Rounders, who was in her backup band in the early '70s, said: "She was the only folk singer I ever met with an authentic 'folk' background. She came to the folk music scene under her own steam, as opposed to being 'discovered' and introduced to it by people already involved in it." Unlike her friends, she unable to even capture a recording contract, spending much of the next few years roaming around North America. Commercial failure of her album ๐˜๐˜ฏ ๐˜”๐˜บ ๐˜–๐˜ธ๐˜ฏ ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ and her estrangement from her children contributed to further substance abuse later in Dalton's life. It was Serge Gainsbourg's birthday yesterday. He would've been 94 today. Regarded as one of the most important figures in French pop, he was renowned for often provocative and scandalous releases which caused uproar in France, dividing its public opinion, as well as his diverse artistic output, which ranged from his early work in jazz, chanson, yรฉ-yรฉ to later efforts in rock, zouk, funk, reggae, and electronica. This typically French insouciance and blasรฉ attitude to life was undoubtedly reflected in his sartorial attire, in which he could make a formal three-piece suit look spontaneous and unpremeditated. Perhaps it was the unkempt, tousled hair and omnipresent cigarette which added to his dishevelled yet cool appearance. Or perhaps it was his habit of leaving his top button open beneath a thin, dark patterned tie. A typical outfit would feature one of his woollen Paletots, a double-breasted, short style of overcoat with a 6x2 button arrangement, complete with eapulettes, peaked lapels and, in his case, always an upturned collar. His colour palette never strayed from neutral monochromatic tones, clearly favouring the appeal of an all-black ensemble. Moving into the 70s, as his passionate and unbridled love affair with British actress Jane Birkin blossomed, Gainsbourg exchanged his suit ensemble for attire that better reflected his rock musician lifestyle. Similar to his English counterpart Mick Jagger, Serge often donned a loose-fitting, coloured or striped shirt, unbuttoned virtually to the navel and finished with a silver chain necklace. His shirt sleeves would either be rolled up or loosely opened at the cuff, whilst the shirt would be tucked firmly into his favoured straight-legged, high-waisted pinstripe trousers. His ankles would be left exposed to reveal black leather penny loafers worn without socks to complete his aura of casual indifference. Bon anniversaire, l'enfant terrible! On this date in 1984, Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father, one day short of his 45th birthday. He was the Prince of Motown, the soulful voice behind hits as wide-ranging as "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)". Gaye both epitomised and outgrew the crowd-pleasing sound that made Motown famous. Over the course of his roughly 25-year recording career, he moved successfully from upbeat pop to "message" music to satin-sheet soul, combining elements of Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan, and Barry White into one complicated and sometimes contradictory package. But as the critic Michael Eric Dyson put it, the man who "chased away the demons of millions...with his heavenly sound and divine art" was chased by demons of his own throughout his life. There had been the longstanding conflict with his father dating back to childhood. Marvin Gay, Sr., (the "e" was added by his son for his stage name) was a preacher and a proponent of a strict moral code he enforced brutally with his four children. He was also, by all accounts, a hard-drinking cross-dresser who personally embodied a rather complicated model of morality. Only one year removed from his first Grammy win and from a triumphant return to the pop charts with "Sexual Healing", Marvin Gaye moved into his parents' home in late 1983. He was in horrible physical, psychological, and financial shape. After a physical fight between father and son on the morning of 1 April 1984, Marvin Sr. took a revolver and shot Marvin Jr. three times in his chest. This week in 1976, David Bowie took one of the most suave, epically dashing, mugshots of all time. Bowie spent the first five months of 1976 on the Isolar tour of his 1976 full-length, Station to Station. It's the album notorious for being recorded while Bowie was living in LA, fuelled in large part by extreme cocaine psychosis. On the night of 20 March 1976 after performing at Community War Memorial Arena in Rochester, NY, Bowie retired to the Americana Rochester Hotel for a party with Iggy Pop and some new friends. Among those new friends: a couple of undercover female police officers, working on a tip that Bowie was traveling with cocaine. While the cops never found any blow the presence of marijuana was more than enough for the authorities to barge into the room. At 2:25 a.m. in the early morning hours of 21 March, four vice squad detectives and a State Police investigator confiscated "about half a pound of marijuana" from three-bedroom hotel suite. "They were held in the Monroe County Jail for a few hours. They were charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, carrying a maximum sentence of fifteen years in prison," according to the Democrat and Chronicle at the time. Bowie paid everyone's bail and went right back on tour, playing that very evening in Springfield, MA. The charges against Bowie and the others were eventually dismissed after a grand jury decline to indict. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" was released this month in 1989 as a single, and included as the seventh track on "Doolittle" album when it was released a month later in April. Rolling Stone's David Fricke said about "Monkey Gone to Heaven": "It was a corrosive, compelling meditation on God and garbage." Q magazine described "Monkey Gone to Heaven": "It's not pretty, but it's carefully structured noise and straight forward rhythmic insistence makes perfect sense: a gut feeling that is doubled when it gets within sniffing distance of a tune." NME said: "All the smart bastards are mixing strings with grunge guitar nowadays and the Pixies are no exception. Snarled vocals, sci-fi lyrics, and the usual molten lave flow of guitars burn another crater where your ears used to be. 'Monkey Gone to Heaven' pukes acid and poetry into America's AOR (Album-oriented Rock) heartland." Here's a classic Irish rebel song, "The Foggy Dew", to celebrate the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The magnificent voice of the beautiful Sinรฉad O'Connor lent her voice for a mournful rendition of the traditional ballad with The Chieftains, in 1995. Written by Canon O'Neill, "The Foggy Dew", is about the Easter Rising of 1916 and encourages Irishmen to fight for the cause of Ireland, rather than the British Empire as so many young men were doing in World War I. O'Neill reflected this alienation when he wrote "The Foggy Dew" commemorating the few hundred brave men who had risen out against what was then the most powerful empire in the world. In 1919, he attended the first sitting of the new Irish Parliament, Dรกil. The names of the elected members were called out, but many were absent. Their names were answered by the reply ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ฐ๐˜ช ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜จ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข ๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญโ€”"locked up by the foreigner". These events had a profound effect on O'Neill and some time after this he wrote "The Foggy Dew" telling the story of the Easter Rising and reflecting the thoughts of many Irish people at the time who now believed that the Irishmen who fought for Britain during the war should have stayed home and fought for Irish independence instead. O'Neill sums up this feeling in the line SURFIN' U.S.A. & KUTAFORNIA-AY On this date 59 years ago, the Beach Boys released "Surfin' U.S.A.", a song with lyrics by Brian Wilson and Chuck Berry. It is a rewritten version of Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen". Billboard ranked it the number 1 song of 1963. "Surfin' U.S.A." is part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. "I was going with a girl called Judy Bowles, and her brother Jimmy was a surfer. He knew all the surfing spots. I started humming the melody to 'Sweet Little Sixteen' and I got fascinated with the fact of doing it, and I thought to myself, 'God! What about trying to put surf lyrics to 'Sweet Little Sixteen's melody? The concept was about, 'They are doing this in this city, and they're doing that in that city' So I said to Jimmy, 'Hey Jimmy, I want to do a song mentioning all the surf spots.' So he gave me a list," said Brian Wilson about how it all started. Despite tensions regarding ownership of the song with Berry at the time, lead guitarist Carl Wilson claimed that the Beach Boys "ran into Chuck Berry in Copenhagen and he told us he loves 'Surfin' U.S.A'." This month in 2005, Q magazine ranked #28 "How Soon Is Now" in its 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. But do you know that "How Soon Is Now?" was originally a B-side of the 1984 single "William, It Was Really Nothing"? Surprisingly, the song played a significant role in defining who The Smiths were. As Trash Theory put it: "How Soon Is Now?" - The B-Side That Defined The Smiths. In 2007, Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr said "How Soon Is Now?" is "possibly [the Smiths'] most enduring record. It's most people's favourite, I think." The song is about their frontman Morrissey's crippling shyness. It has since become an anthem for the alienated and socially isolated. Marr wrote this song, "William..." and "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" over a productive four-day period in June 1984. "How Soon Is Now" was named after a question posed in Marjorie Rosen's feminist film study, Popcorn Venusโ€”one of Morrissey's favourite books. Morrissey lifted the line, "The heir to nothing in particular," from the 19th century novel, Middlemarch, by George Elliot. Sire Records chief Seymour Stein called it "the 'Stairway to Heaven' of the Eighties." It is positioned number 421 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, #4 NME's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and number 10 Pitchfork's 200 Best Songs of the 1980s. This song, "Groove Is in the Heart", came up while I was writing and just hit me with so much 90s disco nostalgia. The video here, a quirkily beautiful cover by Melbourne-based electronic band, Client Liaison. Originally sung by NYC's dance music group, Deee-Lite, this track was released in August 1990 as the lead single from their debut album, World Clique. It was a hit in many countries (including Indonesia), reaching number one in Australia and both the Canadian and US dance chart. The song was originally written in the late 1980s and it was performed live as early as 1989. The backing track was built around many samples, primarily the main riff from Herbie Hancock's track "Bring Down the Birds" and Vernon Burch's "Get Up". Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins provided guest vocals, and the rap is provided by Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. Billboard commented about the song, "Sometimes you can believe the hype. Hot New York City underground dance trio more than lives up to prerelease push with this sizzling groove'n'sample funk jam, kicked into gear by the sultry and charismatic vocal presence of future diva Lady Miss Kier." BuzzFeed noted that it is a "perfect little slice of the early '90s New York club scene." NME stated that it is "playfully funky", also called it a "pretty faultless collage of G-Funk, Daisy Age hip-hop, salsa and dippy disco." Slant Magazine ranked the song third in its 100 Greatest Dance Songs list. Q Magazine ranked it at number 323 in their list of the 1001 Best Songs Ever. Time Out listed the song number 23 in their list of The 100 Best Party Songs. Pitchfork named it the 59th best track of the 1990s. They wrote: "With their sass-tastic frontwoman and kitsched-to-death fashion sense, Deee-Lite probably seemed like a good bet at a time when pop's future was still up for grabs." This week in 1974, Kiss released their self-titled debut album under Casablanca Records. Much of the material on the album was written by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, as members of their pre-Kiss band Wicked Lester. Casablanca Records held a party in LA to celebrate the West Coast release of Kiss (8 February) and to introduce the record company to the press and other record industry executives. Kiss performed their usual loud and bombastic stage show, which turned Warner Bros Records (Casablanca's distributor) against the group. Soon after the show, Warner Bros contacted Casablanca's boss, Neil Bogart, and threatened to end their deal if Kiss did not remove their makeup. With manager Bill Aucoin's backing, Kiss refused. Shortly after the release of Kiss, Warner Bros released Casablanca from their contract. The video here, Kiss performing "Firehouse" on The Mike Douglas Show (March 1974). During the interview portion of the show, Gene Simmons declared himself to be "evil incarnate", eliciting nervousness, confused reactions from the studio audience, to which comedian Totie Fields humorously commented, "Wouldn't it be funny if he's just a nice Jewish boy underneath the makeup?" Although neither confirming or denying his Jewish heritage, Simmons replied, "You should only know," to which, Fields countered, "I do. You can't hide the hook," referring to Simmons' nose. Despite the band's promoting and touring, Kiss album sold approximately 75,000 copies after all its initial release without the presence of a hit single. It was eventually certified gold in 1977, having shipped 500,000 copies. In 2003, Kiss was included in the Spin list of essential glam rock albums. On this date in 1982, "Just Can't Get Enough" is released in the US. It was Depeche Mode's third single, released in September 1981 (in the UK), a month before the release of their debut album, Speak and Spell. This riff-driven synthpop "Just Can't Get Enough" was the final single by founding member and main song writer Vince Clarkeโ€”he left the band in November 1981 and teamed up with Alison Moyet to form Yazoo and later Erasure. "Just Can't Get Enough" reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 26 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart, making it their highest-charting single at the time on both counts. Speak and Spell album is significantly lighter in tone and melody than their subsequent releases, a direction which can largely be attributed to Clarke's writing. After he left, Martin Gore took over songwriting duties. Later albums written by him would explore darker subjects and melodies. Melody Maker felt that Depeche Mode speak with "a winning immediacy" and called Speak & Spell "a wriggling giant of motivation, persuading each muscle to jump in time with the music". Smash Hits wrote: "Synthesisers and bubblegum go together like tinned peaches and Carnation, hence [Depeche Mode's] hit singles: melody, uncluttered electronics and nice voices in humanising harmony." "I remember a boy who has changed the way I perceived music and opened myself to new horizons. Up until I was thirteen, I was listening to a lot of pop music, including Britney Spears, and singers that were in trend at the time for kids of our age. He made me listen to artists I refused to hear because it was music my parents were listening to, such as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Pink Floyd and, most importantly, the Velvet Underground," said Clara Luciani when Metal Magazine asked how she built the musicality of hers back then. "Lou Reed had this uninhibited way of making music that came from his guts; it was the very first time I was confronted with such character and when I understood that another form of music was possible. From the Velvet Underground, I discovered Nico, who also was a revelation in my life. As a little girl, I was self-conscious with my height and deep voice, I struggled; but when listening to her, I discovered the chance I had to be singular and I realized my differences are what make me unique. I then slowly started to accept myself." Happy weekend everyone! It's time for French Disko Friday! #ClaraLuciani #Nue #RocknrollSocmedtelling. ______ Video via crachetonvenin/YouTube.

"Drรดle dโ€™Epoque starts with the complex I had with my androgynous physique when growing up. I have always received criticisms โ€“ the harshest ones coming from women. It took me a long time to find my way of being feminine. Then, I addressed the contradictory expectations our society has for women: we are expected to be mothers, sisters, lovers, Kim Kardashian and Brigitte Macron at the same time. We are harassed by unreachable ideals. There was a time in my life when I said enough, let us be vulnerable and strong whenever it pleases us. It is also an important song for me because it is the only one we have recorded with guitar and voice. We did not have much time left to produce it, but I insisted on having it pure, without any artifices, to show most of its sincerity," Clara Luciani's response to Metal Magazine when she was asked about her powerful ballad, "Drลle d'Epoque". Clara Luciani moved to Paris when she was nineteen (she's now 29). She's from a town in southern France, Septรจmes-les-Vallons: "There was not much life there, that is mostly why arriving in Paris at nineteen was so intense for me, it felt like I started living for the first time. The desire of making music brought me to Paris. I did not set a plan for myself or know where I was going; I really took my guitar over my shoulder wanting to start my own life. I struggled at first and worked in boutiques and restaurants but I did not want to look back at my journey and live with the regret of not having taken the chance to try." "Paris was more than liberation, it was a birth. When I look back at being a teenager, the first word that comes to my mind is boredom. From this, I found exile in literature, music and writing when growing up, which has had a big influence on the creative process I now have. When I was younger, I recall being fascinated by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoirโ€™s relationship, so by existentialism, I understood that everything was offered to me if I was willing to act towards it." I've been listening to Clara Luciani a lot since last year. I guess you should, too :) Music video via crachetonvenin/YouTube. #ClaraLuciani #DroledEpoque #RocknrollSocmedtelling

SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY On Sunday, 30 January 1972, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 13 unarmed civil rights demonstrators are shot dead by British Army paratroopers in an event that becomes known as "Bloody Sunday". The protesters, all Northern Catholics, were marching in protest of the British policy of internment of suspected Irish nationalists. British authorities had ordered the march banned, and sent troops to confront the demonstrators when it went ahead. The soldiers fired indiscriminately into the crowd of protesters, killing 13 and wounding 17. The killing brought worldwide attention to the crisis in Northern Ireland and sparked protests all across Ireland. In Dublin, the capital of independent Ireland, outraged Irish citizens lit the British embassy aflame on 2 February. On 21 July 1972 the Irish Republican Army exploded 20 bombs simultaneously in Belfast, killing British military personnel and a number of civilians. Britain responded by instituting a new court system composed of trial without jury for terrorism suspects and conviction rates topped over 90 percent. The Irish rock supergroup, U2, responded to the incident by releasing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on 21 March 1983, included in their 3rd studio album, War. The song was ranked 268th on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Slides: 1-5. Bloody Sunday. 7. A mass funeral after the shooting. 8. Duff McKagan, one of rock's smartest and most articulate personalities, turned 57 today! Michael Andrew "Duff" McKagan played bass for twelve years in Guns N' Roses, when he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. McKagan rejoined the band in the 2016, following GNR induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Toward the end of his first tenure with Guns N' Roses, McKagan released a solo album, Believe in Me (1993), and formed the short-lived supergroup Neurotic Outsiders (Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Duran Duran's John Taylor were the members, among others). Between 2002 and 2008, he played bass in Velvet Revolver. He briefly performed with Alice in Chains in 2006, with Jane's Addiction in 2010 and joined Hollywood Vampiresโ€”Johnny Depp is one of the membersโ€”in 2016. In addition to his musical career, McKagan has established himself as a writer. He has written weekly columns on a wide variety of topics for Seattle Weekly, Playboy, and ESPN. He has been called "Duff" since toddlerhood, to which he once referred as "an Irish thing". McKagan was taught how to play bass by his brother Bruce. In his biorgraphy, It's So Easy (And Other Lies), McKagan said that he fashioned himself after punk bassists such as Barry Adamson (Magazine, The Birthday Party) and Paul Simonon (The Clash; The Good, the Bad & the Queen). Remembering the punk rock godfather, the Teddy Boy sartorialist, the Situationist International combatant, the propagandist imperator, my true idol: Malcolm McLaren. He was born on this day in 1946. Born in England, Malcolm Robert Andrew McLaren was notable for combining visual and performing art, music, as well as an impresario, clothes designer and boutique owner, in an inventive and provocative way. He is best known as a promoter and manager of bands the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols. McLaren attended a number of British art colleges and adopted the stance of the social rebel in the style of French revolutionaries, Internationale Situationniste. McLaren realised that a new protest style was need for the 1970s, which he supplied fashion from the Chelsea boutique SEX, which he operated with girlfriend Vivienne Westwood. After a period advising the New York Dolls in the U.S., McLaren moved back to London and managed the Sex Pistols. The issue of a controversial record, God Save the Queen, satirising the Queen's Jubilee in 1977, was typical of McLaren's shock tactic. McLaren performed with acclaim as a solo artist, initially focusing on hip hop and world music and later diversifying into funk and disco. His first album, Duck Rock, spawned 2 top-10 singles: "Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch". In his later years, he lived in Paris and New York City, and died of peritoneal mesothelioma in a Swiss hospital on 8 April 2010. Slides: 1. McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. 2. Remembering Janis Joplin, it's her birthday today. She was born on 19 January 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas, USA. To many, Janis Joplin was the first female rock star. Making her mark as the lead singer of psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company at the June 1967 Monterey Pop Festival in California, Janis Joplinโ€™s candle burned brightly for the next three years, ending with her death from a heroin overdose on 4 October 1970, aged just 27. In that short time, her cultural presence was as powerful as her voice, inspiring more female talent within the rock, soul and blues scene, gracing magazine covers and photo shoots, and winning over new fans in interviews with her honesty and humour. โ€œI'm a victim of my own insides,โ€ she once said. โ€œThere was a time when I wanted to know everything. It used to make me very unhappy, all that feeling. I just didn't know what to do with it." โ€œBut now I've learned to make that feeling work for me. I'm full of emotion and I want a release, and if you're on stage and if it's really working and you've got the audience with you, it's a oneness you feel.โ€ The video here via Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, one of Joplin's most classic, "Piece of My Heart", covered magnificently by Alyona Yarushina. Elvis hasn't left the building. #reposted from @thehydrantofficial: On this week in 1935, Elvis Aaron Presely was born. The Mississippi-born rockabilly rebel is the biggest inspiration for us, especially our frontman, @marshellobali. As well know, Shello's stage moniker is "Brown Elvis". Even with no formal music training, Elvis is still considered Billboard royalty, with 108 Billboard Hot 100 hits, the most of any rock artist in the chartโ€™s history. His legacy includes a wide range of classics, everything from โ€œHound Dogโ€ to โ€œOne Night.โ€ But besides his voice and his dance moves (Elvis the Pelvis!), it's the jumpsuit. It played a huge part for Elvis in his career, and they quickly became a trademark for him. Nowadays when we think of Elvis, we will also think of his amazing stage outfits. On this date in 1946 Syd Barrett was born. Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965. Syd was Floyd's original frontman and primary songwriter, becoming known for his whimsical take on psychedelia, English-accented singing, literary influences, and stream-of-consciousness writing style. Originally trained as a painter, Syd was musically active for fewer than ten years. With Pink Floyd, he recorded four singles, their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), portions of their second album A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), and several unreleased songs. In April 1968, Syd was ousted from the band amid the speculation of mental illness and his excessive use of psychedelic drugs. He began a brief solo career in 1969 with the single "Octopus" and followed with 2 solo albums, before going into self-imposed seclusion for more than 30 years, enjoying life as an artist and a keen gardener. Pink Floyd wrote many tributes to him after he left, the best-known being "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (I included the music video here, a beautiful cover by Gruhak, who also tribute the song to their singer who just passed away). Syd died, aged 60, in July 2006 from complication arising from diabetes. Many artists have acknowledged Syd's influence on their work. Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, Blur, Kevin Ayers, Marc Bolan, Tangerine Dream, to name a few. David Bowie once called Syd "a poet in a rock band". In 1988, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole called the recording studio at 3 a.m. and said he had to record a song right away. 15 minutes later, Israel arrived at the studio. The studio owner, Milan Bertosa said, "And in walks the largest human being I had seen in my life." A security guard gave the 500-pound (around 226 kilogram) man a large steel chair to sit on. Milan continued, "Then I put up some microphones, do a quick sound check, roll tape, and the first thing he does is 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. He played and sang, one take, and it was over." On this date in 1958 Jerry Lee "The Killer" Lewis arrived in London's Heathrow Airport to start his first ever tour in the UK. His young wife, Myra Gale Brown, came with him. This was where the disaster started. The Killer had been warned by his advisers that he shouldn't take his new wife, but he didn't listen. Firstly, Myra was only 13 years old. Secondly, she was his cousin, the daughter of his bassist J.W. Brown. Thirdly, she wash his third wife. Fourthly, their marriage had taken place before the second divorce had been finalised. And for a bonus, Lewis' second marriage had also taken place before the previous one was terminated. The great anticipation for one of the first American stars to invade the UK music scene was smashed when British journalist Ray Berry asked a simple question of Myra: "Who are you?". She replied honestly, saying she was the wife of Lewis. The following question for The Killer himself: "And how old is Myra?" The answer Lewis gave was a lie: "Fifteen." . Within days the British tour had been cancelled, and within weeks the rising rock star would be appearing for $250 in bars and clubs instead of the $10,000 big shows he'd been playing before the scandal. Radio stations stopped playing his songs. It took Lewis a decade to rebuild his career. Even though he a handful of rock 'n' roll successes, he only began hitting big again when he became a country artist in 1968. Lewis enjoyed a further rehabilitation of his reputation in the '80s. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural event in 1986, he instigated the end-of-show jam that remains a mainstay of the ceremony to this day. ________ Photo: Karen Illingworth - Pinterest. #JerryLeeLewis #MyraGaleBrown #RocknrollSocmedtelling
