Una de las características de los hombres de las antiguas culturas fue la comprensión de las posibilidades y los límites del conocimiento humano y de su aplicación en la vida práctica. Debido a esto, entendieron que la vida de los hombres tenía que responder a las formas en que estaban constituidos tanto el macrocosmos (idea cosmológica) como el microcosmos (idea antropológica), bajo este principio se relacionaban con su realidad y organizaban sus costumbres, creencias, sistemas político-sociales, etc. Por ejemplo, en el Antiguo Egipto, la jerarquía institucional de sus organismos estaba constituida por principio de representación divina, esto es, una relación subordinada entre los que representan directamente a la naturaleza de los Dioses y sus servidores. El Faraón, por este principio de unificación, no era una autoridad ejecutiva del ordenamiento de Egipto, sino, que él mismo era el Dios encarnado y por él (como encarnación del principio ideal de Ra/Sol) los demás accedían a la voluntad de la deidad, que en su divinidad se expresaba en diferentes actos, enseñados masivamente como Dioses. En el siglo XVIII el ideal del humanismo se configuró en Europa como el movimiento cultural de la iluminación o ilustración. Los ilustrados tomaron el testimonio de la universalidad del conocimiento, pero parte de este ideal fue asumido por personas que carecían de la formación espiritual del humanismo, por lo tanto, recondujeron sus ideas a cuestiones políticas y partidistas que, en muchos casos, simplificaron las ideas originales, supeditándolas a prejuicios e ideologías. Es probable que, en ese momento histórico, esta distorsión haya sido imposible de evitar pues las disputas ideológicas pocas veces encontraron posiciones convergentes sino mas bien se encontraron con posturas antagónicas, todo el racionalismo y el empirismo de la época cortó cualquier relación con la religión, apareciendo destacados personajes como Voltaire, cuya ironía y mofa era grande respecto a la religión cristiana y particularmente a la iglesia católica, y por el otro lado la iglesia católica se cerró ante los nuevos desarrollos culturales, condenando al movimiento ilustrado. En ese ambiente, las posibilidades de coexistencia eran pocas, por un lado, unos caían en la burla a la espiritualidad tradicional y se centraban en el fenómeno político y social y otros, oponiéndose, pretendían revivir, de los rincones polvorientos de la historia, a la escolástica más rancia de la baja edad media. Entre estas posturas, los filósofos esotéricos de la época mediarán agregando otra postura al escenario cultural, la renovación de la tradición esotérica del Humanismo de los siglos precedentes, para evitar la ruptura entre los conocimientos laicos y los religiosos. Las estrellasy las Constelaciones. En el mundo antiguo era tan importante ver las estrellas para tanto para saber si era tiempo para las cosechas como para conocer si tenían la bendición de sus deidades para las diversas actividades, sin mencionar que las estrellas generaban curiosidad y sobre todo estimulaba la genialidad de las personas que al final se creó el concepto de las Constelaciones. Las Constelaciones originalmente eran para saber el incio de las estaciones con sólo mirar al cielo, más tarde con civilizaciones de la escritura como la sumeria o la arcadia se empezó a generar una copilación de estas Constelaciones, que fueron el previo a las 12 Constelaciones zodiacales que maduraron en la época helenistica. Por otra parte las civilizaciones como la árabe desarrollaron aún más a las estrellas, brindándole nombre a todas las estrellas de las Constelaciones que aún no tenían nombre, además de incorporar nuevas métricas para entender la luz de las estrellas. Mientras avanzaba la civilización, se le atribuyeron a las estrellas funciones mágicas que al mezclar las con Cábala podrían generar talismanes mágicos de mayor poder. Part one. - We went to the King Arthur exhibition in Falmouth at the weekend. I was very excited to see some of the famous Pre Raphaelite paintings inspired by Tennyson’s ‘The Idylls of the King’. This one really caught my eye. It’s by Evelyn de Morgan, painted in 1903 and it’s titled, ‘The Love Potion’. There’s loads of symbolism in this painting. Firstly there’s the use of the colours which denote the alchemical states ( red, black, white) along with a gold used by this school of artists to show the perfection of self, the ultimate goal. The female alchemist mixing the love potion is older, this is shown by both her posture and her face which show some signs of aging. Outside are a young couple, possibly Tristran and Isolde, and the viewer is left to wonder whether these are the people for which the potion is being made. A black cat sits at her feet, maybe this is to conjure up the idea that this woman is some kind of sorcerer or witch. There are some clues as to the wisdom and experience of the potion maker too. You can see underneath the bench where she is sitting lots of old, thick books, obviously she’s read these and this is what has qualified her to make this powerful potion which she is so intently pouring into the goblet. You can imagine how excited I was to spot Agrippa’s ‘Three books of Occult Philosophy ‘ on her shelf! I love this book!!

Alude a que tales compuestos u objetos son entidades formales y no sensibles; son universales o ideas. De esta manera, la Piedra de los Filósofos es una forma o idea que no tiene realidad sensible; esta carencia de realidad sensible lo indica el adjetivo “filosofal”. No hay relación entre el metal mercurio con el Mercurio de los filósofos, pues uno es un elemento sensible, el otro una idea, que significa, entre otras cosas, el principio volátil de los elementos que no pueden ser reducidos. El siglo XVI se caracterizó por la extensión, en todas las artes y ciencias, del Humanismo. El humanismo, como algunos han supuesto, no es un movimiento “centrado en el hombre” o un movimiento naturalista, psicologista, ni menos materialista. La explicación vana suele decir que la edad media es un periodo caracterizado por un “teocentrismo” en que todo gira en torno a Dios y en el Renacimiento esto cambia a un “antropocentrismo” en que todo se vuelve hacia el hombre. Estas categorías son simplistas y falsas, pues en el caso del humanismo, el hombre adquiere protagonismo precisamente por su relación con Dios. Con el nombre de “Renacimento” se alude, al renacer del sentido estético y espiritual del mundo clásico, es decir, greco romano, que, previo al cristianismo, ya había concebido una relación entre la “forma” humana y la “forma” divina. Los Dioses eran representados con figura humana porque en el hombre veían la mayor perfección de la creación. La consecuencia de revivir la cultura clásica genera como efecto, en el siglo XVI, el movimiento espiritual del Humanismo, que en el siglo XVII será transformado y dado a conocer como la Fraternidad Rosacruz que le da forma organizativa y cultural en Europa. Uno de los maestros del siglo XVI fue Cornelius Agrippa, personaje prototípico del genio renacentista, el cual dedicó su vida al estudio y la enseñanza de la Filosofía Esotérica, a la cual él mismo denominó, haciendo la correcta traducción, Filosofía Oculta. Su obra principal “Sobre la Filosofía Oculta” es uno de los pocos tratados de magia que han sido escritos a lo largo de la historia. Agrippa entendió la magia en tres aspectos: Natural, Celestial y Ceremonial, cada una de estas se vincula con las tres ciencias fundamentales que son: Física, Matemáticas y Teología.
