#ConvictLeasing was a system of forced #penal #labor that was practiced “historically” in the Southern United States, the laborers being mainly “colored” (aka #WeThePrinciplePeople) American men. The system expanded throughout most of the South with the emancipation of enslaved (aka #HumanTraffick’d ☠️) people at the end of the #American #CivilWar in 1865. The system was highly lucrative ☠️ for both the lessees and state governments. The #criminaljustice “system” colluded with private planters and other business owners to entrap ☠️ convict and lease “colored” people as prison laborers 🙊🙉🙈 Ya don’t say 🤬 #HistoREAL 🙅🏾‍♂️⚔️ #InREALTime #DuckSeizeUN #MissMeWitDaPapalBull🐃💩 #Treason #13thamendment

Johnny: Well, here’s your new mill hands Mrs. Kennedy. Scarlett: They look pretty thin and weak to me, Gallagher. To save Tara after Rhett has failed her, Scarlett resorts to a new plan in spite of Archie threatening to stop assisting her. Convict leasing was practiced in the Southern United States by corporations such as the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company. Louisiana leased out convicts as early as 1844, the year before Scarlett O’Hara was born. The system expanded at the close of the Civil War in 65 and reached a peak in 80. Eventually it was outlawed in 1928, long after the events of Gone with the Wind. In 1898, 73% of Alabama’s annual state revenue came from convict leasing. 25 years ago on April 16, 1999, Life, a buddy comedy-drama film directed by Ted Demme was released in theaters. It received distributed by @universalpictures and starred Eddie Murphy and @martinlawrence. It was the second film that featured Murphy and Lawrence together, the first being Boomerang seven years earlier in 1992. The supporting cast of Life included Ned Beatty, R. Lee Ermey, Obba Babatundé, @berniemacofficial, @anthonyanderson, @mnunezjr, @therealbokeem, @guytorry, Michael Taliferro and Barry Shabaka Henley. It also featured minor appearances by @sanaalathan, Heavy D, Rick James, Johnny Brown and several others. Life is framed as a story being told by an elderly inmate about two of his friends, Ray Gibson and Claude Banks, who were both wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. At the time of its release, Life failed to meet the studio’s expectations at the box office, and went on to receive mixed reviews from critics. Years since its release, The film later established a strong cult following among many fans of Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, establishing Life as a cult classic. The film is currently streaming on @netflix. Many of the themes explored in Life such as race, murder, false imprisonment, convict leasing, friendship, time and growing old remain relevant to the times. Despite Life being a film that is beloved to this day, it does shed light on black men that have been falsely accused and wrongfully convicted of crimes they’ve never done to begin with! #Life25 #LifeFilm #UniversalPictures #1999 #EddieMurphy #MartinLawrence #RayGibson #ClaudeBanks #BlackFilms #TellBlackStories #ShareBlackStories #CultClassic #RayandClaude #WrongfullyConvicted #ConvictLeasing #SlaveryByAnotherName #RayBoomBoomRoom #EatYoCornbread #ClassicFilm #ForTheCulture

After the Civil War, slavery persisted in the form of convict leasing—a system in which Southern states leased prisoners to private railways, mines, and large plantations. While states profited, prisoners earned no pay and faced inhumane, dangerous, and often deadly work conditions. Thousands of Black people were forced into what has been called “slavery by another name.” Learn more about the convict leasing system at EJI’s Legacy Museum in Montgomery. Did you know? Before the American Revolution, Britain sent convicts to America under the Transportation Act of 1718. Chains below deck, these individuals were auctioned off into servitude, often working on tobacco plantations. #History #AnericanRevolution #ConvictTransportation In the 19th century, privatization of prisons led to horrific exploitation. Companies like McHatton, Pratt, and Ward profited from inmate labor, while states like Louisiana even sold children born to prisoners! The image is of the Riverfront in Montgomery, Alabama, site of the famous brawl occurred. As part of a site assessment trip we visited sites associated with forced labor, connecting the dots from enslavement to mass incarceration. It was painful to revisit Equal Justice Institute, the museum and monument sites are incredible sources to gain perspective on a system that has racks communities and families with pain, cripples families psychologically and economically, and creates a vacuum of potential unexplored. The refrain of my feedback is the constant examination of these systems, continuing in the present, not just the past. As a public historian, it is my duty to see the historical record in this way and to invite conversations on the topic, even if challenging. As a social worker, my duty is to address systems that harm and find deliberate, intentional remedies. What recommendations would you suggest? My recommendations were most in the form of questions- they lead to deeper investigation and more holistic approaches. Create a curriculum that shifts culture; look at child labor Use experiential learning Accountability Who do we bring into the conversation? Big picture activist, Howard Zinn, a People’s History What is the story being told? The story dictates who is at the table The story must be in conversation with other sites as this is one story of many Identity the who of incarceration. How/ when do we get to heal? Discuss the root of forced labor camps. Understand how the system of capitalism harms, racial capitalism. Use a variety of methods to speak to the issues: Funding- who and how being funded Materials used Design aspects Conversations that are allowed Who benefits from this project? #publichistory #socialwork #practice #sitesofconscience #accountability #forcedlabor #convictleasing #capitalism #massincarcerration #narrative #story #benefits #remedy #riverfront #montgomery #preserveblackspace #makeeveryonevisible #civilbikes #sohappytobehere

A new federal lawsuit filed by several former and currently incarcerated individuals alleges that Alabama has been engaging in a modern day form of slavery with incarcerated individuals, similar to the convict leasing system that was abolished in the early 1900s. The lawsuit was filed against Gov. Kay Ivey, Attorney General Steve Marshall, a beer distributor and several fast food companies. A group of current and former Alabama prisoners are alleging that the state’s prison labor practices amount to a “modern-day form of slavery,” according to a complaint filed in federal court this week. The plaintiffs include 10 men and women who worked during their time in Alabama’s prisons and say they were trapped in a system in which “incarcerated people are forced to work, often for little or no money, for the benefit of the numerous government entities and private businesses.” Those 10 people are all Black – a fact they emphasize underscores the disproportionate number of Black people held in the state’s prisons. Their lawsuit also alleges that the conditions in the state’s prison system itself are inhumane and render any work there inherently coercive. In 2020, the Department of Justice sued the state for failing to provide prisoners with safe and sanitary conditions. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall are among the public officials being sued, along with leaders from the state’s department of corrections and transportation, and its Board of Pardons and Paroles. Several private employers named in the lawsuit are the franchisees of well-known companies: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken, where prisoners have worked as part of a work-release program……… #convictleasing https://www.npr.org/2023/12/14/1219187249/prisoners-are-suing-alabama-over-forced-labor-calling-it-a-form-of-slavery

Slavery was occurring in the Sahara, the empire conquers & implements rulers & law, titles. The Arabic slave trade of the aetheopian, the slave trader merchants would become known as moors after mixing with the Turkic for years & then the French Abbasid alliance. They invaded from levant & set up in North Africa, set upon Greece, Slavic lands, South Africa plus, exploited, the Iberian (Spain & Portugal) was established as a colonial empire, the French & Spanish Maroc armies of Africa they made deals with the monarchy put in place in England called peace & friendship treaties that allowed them a monopoly on trade, this did the East Indies in. Then they set in on Asia major to Muluccas, The convict leasing to the Americas from Portugal to Brazil, from Spain to West Indies South America, French/German indies. From Britain to North America, the empire would colonise & send the previously colonised so called criminals to the new colonial empire. Anyway, my point. They took people from one colonial state & sent them to another, the only people shipped by the thousands were English & Irish. There were about 110 Afrikans who were sent to the Americas as slaves/convicts & another few hundred from Madagascar & parts of west Africa but not many. In Australia the convicts were mostly British & Irish, Portuguese, etc as it says on one of the slides. Most of the “African” convicts in Australia were actually West Indian from the Americas lands. Reclassified as African because the empire wanted a black & white world on technicolor screens. Fact is you were classified black if poor hence the black Irish who often had red hair pale skin to black hair dark skin. #convictleasing #planetearth

I’m pretty sure this play was ran on the so-called blacks and browns in America especially but all over the world. Genocide and Dehumanization, which is why they now identify with the “black” narrative and other commercial classifications but that’s not who they are. Each “state” is a country that contained nations on dark skinned people. Prior to the colonization. We’ve been experiencing cultural genocide for centuries now. Just a little positive self-image elders, genealogy, reading and the education from private entities and families will bring you the nuanced truth. The same entities on display in the media they own stole our land and has assisted in stealing the land and committing mass genocide and subjugation of humans into chattel property for the means of enterprise under Roman Civil Law Tradition everywhere in this world since Dum Diversas 1452. The Sugar Land 95 is the name given to the 94 men and one woman discovered in 2018 in unmarked graves in Sugar Land, TX. These individuals were prisoners during the time of convict leasing and were found buried at the build site of the Fort Bend ISD James Reese Career and Technical Center. This discovery is the first convict labor camp cemetery excavated in the US. When I first learned about the SL 95, I wanted to learn more. I was also captivated by the one woman and wondered about her circumstances. I met Chassidy Olainu-Alade, leader of this memorialization project, and we quickly hit it off! She’s an excellent storyteller with a vast knowledge of history. Together, she and I are brainstorming and envisioning an artistic representation of the one woman discovered in the remains. So many women were greatly impacted by convict leasing, and so many of their stories were not often documented or told. This watercolor, ink and collage portrait I created is one possible vision of the one woman who was buried at the site. The paper used in her halo is from a Sugar Land map. The goal is to restore dignity and pay tribute to those who were impacted by convict leasing. you can learn more about the Sugar Land 95 on twitter: @SL95_FBISD #sugarland95 #convictleasing #halfportrait #houstonartist #mixedmediaart

Repost from @zinneducationproject • On April 8, 1911, an explosion at the Banner Mine in Alabama killed 128 men, almost all of them Black prisoners of the state. Many of them were serving time for misdemeanors such as violating prohibition and vagrancy — often known to be trumped up charges to help meet state quotas for convict labor. The men were effectively sentenced to enslavement and death through the convict lease system. Within two weeks of the explosion, convicts were sent back to work at the mine. The use of convict labor in Alabama mines was in response by the owners to earlier efforts by miners to join labor unions and strike for higher wages and better working conditions. Those better working conditions might have prevented the Banner explosion and other mine disasters. The state colluded with the mine owners to protect their profits instead of the rights of the workers for health and safety. Read more about the Banner Mine disaster at the Encyclopedia of Alabama and see the book and film Slavery by Another Name. Meanwhile, the contemporary implications of coal get little mention in textbooks and the U.S. government is lifting all safety regulations on mining. Read and share “The Poison We Never Talk About in School” by Bill Bigelow from Rethinking Schools (@rethinkingschools). [Image description: Black and white photo shows workers at Banner Mine. After the American Civil War, many African Americans in Southern states were victims of the convict labor system at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through this system, government agencies would “lease” convicts to private institutions and businesses at a fee. During their years of operation, the Chattahoochee Brick Company utilized the convict labor system to make bricks that are still present in dozens of buildings throughout Atlanta. As part of our T & T initiative, we have partnered with the City of Atlanta coalition to take a deeper look at the history of the Chattahoochee Brick site and create a space of remembrance. Here are present-day photos of the site. 📷: Autumn Smith #TruthandTransformation #Chattahoocheebrickcompany #slaverybyanothername #convictleasing #convictlabor #History #Atlanta

Hey everyone! We are approaching 5 years since the bodies of the Sugar Land 95 were first uncovered wrongfully by FBISD. On this 5th anniversary, what do we have to show for it? We have had 5 years of FBISD’s continuous bad-faith engagement with the descendant community. We have had 5 years of FBISD disrespect and whitewashing, moving the Sugar Land 95 and descendants no closer to reparations. We have had 5 years of FBISD resiliently confining the historical wrongdoings of convict leasing strictly through their lens without any critical engagement. We have had 5 years of FBISD silencing the discussion of their wrongdoings over the past 5 years. We have had 5 years of FBISD wrongfully claiming ownership of a historic Black cemetery. And finally, we have had 5 years of FBISD evading basic accountability. Join us next Saturday on Zoom as we continue to honor our ancestors and hold them in remembrance as we continue to fight for their protection. #sugarland95 #stopwhitewashingcemeteries #bhm #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #blackcemeteriesmatter #blackcemeteries #blackcemetery #blacklivesmatter #black #protectourancestors #protectthesugarland95 #dnatesting #preservehistory #convictleasing #convictleasingisslavery #convictleasingandlaborproject #decolonize #reparations

Repost from @therevcoms • SWIPE >>>> In early 2018, a construction crew in Sugar Land, TX, 20 miles from #Houston, accidentally discovered 95 shallow unmarked graves. The 94 Black men and one Black woman whose remains were found were from 14 to 70 years old when they died. The bodies had been buried in pine boxes more than 100 years ago. This accidental find revealed a gruesome chapter in the ugly history of America’s treatment of African-American people. Archeologists who have begun to study this site date the bodies back to 1878-1911. They found signs of horrific injuries on the skeletons, ranging from bone infections to healed bone breaks and “bones distorted by heavy labor and muscles torn away from the skeleton,” according to the New York Times. Many of the bones unearthed were deformed in the same ways, indicating that they bore the repeated stress of incredibly hard labor. These remains belonged to prisoners—leased convicts—who had been forced to work in virtual slavery for Sugar Land’s Imperial Sugar Company, once the leading US sugar producer. Some of them may have been former slaves. These human beings were literally worked to death and then unceremoniously disposed of. Slavery was formally ended in 1865 in the US—except, under the #13thAmendment, for prisoners. During the Jim Crow years, forced convict labor was justified on the grounds that imprisoned Black people were inherently criminals without rights. But the true motive was that after the Civil War, the Southern economy was in shambles, and there was a great demand for a labor force that could be super-exploited. And the ending of Reconstruction signaled that the victorious capitalist North could only recohere and “unify” the country on the basis of maintaining #whitesupremacy in new forms. These two forces—capitalism and white supremacy—drove the formation of the convict labor system of Jim Crow. The “neo-slavery” of #convictleasing was slavery by another name. The #criminalization and forced #enslavement of tens of thousands of #AfricanAmerican people was part of robbing a whole people of their full humanity.

😒 I was born and raised in Southeast Texas in a county that STILL has a Sundown Town and surrounding towns where black people STILL catch hell. I was born and raised in a county where the KKK marched at our city halls and threatened our schools. I was born and raised in a town where my father was one of the first black men to work for a company and it was cool when he was a janitor, but as soon as he got the job as a lineman/line worker and became a the competiton. He was called the n-word and threatened EVERYDAY. I was born and raised near a town where the REAL racists tied a black man to the back of a truck and dragged him (Mr James Byrd Jr.). 😮‍💨🤲🏾🕊️I was born and raised where my GRANDMOTHER raised kids in 'the lil house' out back of 'the big house' on a former plantation. This was my GRANDMOTHER, NOT great or great-great. I've NEVER seen a black racist. NEVER! So, show yourselves so I can get y'all up outta here. Your take on a black racist falls on deaf ears over here. BTW, I have family and childhood friends on my page that could co-sign EVERYTHING I said. Go research the differences between racism, bigotry and prejudice. You're confused af. Good day. #racism #jimcrow #socialengineering #systemicoppression #environmentalracism #redlining #convictleasing #blackcodes #peonage

Only done in VERY dire and specific situations. One that requires rites and cleansing ceremonies. To see it done so carelessly and with such impunity to at least 37 bodies!😥 This is “yet another incident of African American erasure”. These ancestors were dehumanized and denied rest both in life and in death I hope more of the affected families are located and able to organize a class action lawsuit. On Dec. 15, we will welcome Houston Community College history professor Dr. Theresa Jach as the guest speaker for our December Something to Chew On program. Dr. Jach will give a presentation titled “Convict Leasing and Prison Farms in Texas,” a topic that‘s very relevant to the origin story of Lake Jackson. Click the link in our bio for tickets! Often called “slavery by another name,” convict leasing began after the Civil War ended and enslaved African-Americans were freed. Ratified in 1865, the 13th Amendment reads, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” This clause legalizes forced labor of convicted criminals. Because plantation owners and businessmen in the South lost their low-cost labor force of enslaved people, they turned to the prison population for forced labor, instead. Beginning in 1867, the Texas state government signed lease agreements with private companies; these agreements allowed the lessees “use of all prison facilities and property, including inmates. The prisoners could be placed at whatever labor the lessees directed, subject to minimal state regulation and control.” This lack of state oversight often resulted in mistreatment and abuse of inmates, who were majority African-American. Convicts were often leased to private plantation farms in southeast Texas, including the Lake Jackson plantation. In September 1874, an inspector for the State Penitentiary named J.K.P. Campbell “sixty-five sick convicts” with “no medical attention.” In 1876, another inspector reported that “three men had died at the Lake Jackson Plantation: one while being punished in the stocks, one in an escape attempt, and one from natural causes.” The last known lease of convicts to the Lake Jackson Plantation was in November 1884 and included 33 men. Come out to Something to Chew On on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 12 PM to learn more from Dr. Theresa Jach! Admission is free with an option to buy a boxed lunch for $12. @wearehccs Photo courtesy Austin History Center #convictleasing #texashistory
