I read @nikolehannahjones 1619 book two years ago. I took notes as I do with every book that I read. It was profound, deep, and historical. It’s a must read. Don’t be intimidated by its thickness. Also, I minored in history as an undergrad and then went on to complete a masters in it. As Lola Brooke said, Don’t Play With It. 📖 🇺🇸🙏🏽 • • #books #1619project #dollyreads #blacknerddelegation #americanhistory

AIDING AND ABETTING White Supremacy, is extremely profitable for Black Americans. Especially in a Presidential election year. We see saggin’ on the streets and also when resting our feet; watching TV this morning. There’s no difference between the two. Both are returning gains made by the likes of Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall, Muhammad Ali, Curt Flood, Nina Simone, and the first slave to step foot on North America in the year 1619.

This project confirms that we are truly our ancestors wildest dreams. We are The Miracles. I am reminded everyday that I look in the mirror and in the eyes of my children that I descend from the baddest MF’s to ever have walked THIS planet. When I did this painting I decided to HONOR my ancient ancestry whose ORIGINS transcend slavery, and begin somewhere in the STARS. “BG 2.12: Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be” I dedicate this painting to ALL of the people who are fighting the good fight. Our ancestors fought the good fight and WE are evidence of the VICTORY. “Bound for the Beyond” 2023 📷 @_erinsvision_ ♻️ nikolehannahjones ・・・ I’m so excited to finally to announce “The 1619 Project: A Visual Experience” publishes on 10/22 and is available to preorder at the link in my bio. One more Harkness on the last day of class for my IB Juniors. They read the preface to the 1619 Project to preview their 1st unit in the fall, "Slavery & the New World 1500-1800." They asked their own questions, answered their own questions, challenged each other, talked historiography, and challenged the author @nikolehannahjones. While their contemporaries were having water gun fights in the hallways, they were putting in the work it takes to do well on an IB exam next year. 💪📚 I couldn't be more proud of these soon to be seniors. Our plans for reform started with such promise but the backlash / whitelash followed. More money for police. Less money for schools. More money for police. Less money for communities. Efforts to dismantle equity efforts and cries of white victimization and reverse racism. The banning of books. The elimination of African American studies programs in schools at all levels. Vicious attacks on @nikolehannahjones and the #1619project Rest in peace #georgefloyd we will not rest until we’ve helped make a world that works for all the people. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

@nikolehannahjones Last night capped off the television awards season with a Television Academy Honor for the #1619project docuseries. It’s been so gratifying to see the stories of everyday Americans like MacArthur Cotton, who was tortured in Parchman prison for trying to democratize Mississippi, and Jennifer Bates, who stood up against Amazon to try to unionize the plant, and my cousin Chimere, who shared her story of working your entire life but never being able to make enough to make ends meet, being honored again and again. We don’t do this for accolades, we do it to tell the truth. But the awards make it harder for institutions to say no when others pitch projects that center Black folks and for that I am ever grateful. Also, we won alongside @lakotanationfilm, another powerful film that tries to correct the false history of this nation and the erasure of the people who helped build it. Please watch if you haven’t seen it.

The 1619 project cherry picks historical facts to support the contemporary left-wing opinion that America is, and has always been, a systemically racist country. Many of the arguments it presents completely ignore the historical context. It serves as a cautionary tale of presentism and confirmation bias. #1619project #americanhistory #americanrevolution #historymeme #warhistory #warhistorymeme #presentism #confirmationbias #historian #americanmemes

There is nothing more motivating and joyous than 20 4th graders with clipboards and questions following me around in this sacred space. These 4th graders have studied slavery, white supremacy and #1619project all school year. They had thoughtful and curious questions and were able to connect the dots. The kids are getting younger. Next week 3rd graders are visiting from a different school. #ourfuture #history #blackcemeteriesmatter #americanhistory #washingtondc #georgetown

I had so much fun on Tuesday with my 4th-grade friends from Capitol Hill Day School! I find nothing more inspiring, exhilarating and fun than being followed around by twenty 4th graders with clipboards and questions! They did not disappoint with the questions. I may have to audio record my tours with my young audiences. They are constantly thinking, curious and don't hold back. We had such a good time learning and exploring. Thank you @capitolhilldayschool for your commitment to telling the whole story to our young people and giving them a great foundation for critical thinking. #blackhistorymatters #americanhistory #slavery #elementaryschooleducation #1619project #washingtondc #blackgeorgetown It should be noted that these aren't your typical 4th graders. These 4th graders have completed a year-long study of slavery, white supremacy, and #1619project. They connected a lot of dots that some adults haven't figured out. LAST PHOTO: I shared with students the leaving of rocks, coins, and fruit in the cemeteries. At the end of the tour, I showed them the grave marker of Jedidah Pope Thompson we're restoring (Hannah Pope of Tudor Place's adult daughter. They visited Tudor Place in January.) They all decided they wanted to let Jedidah know they visited and were saying "Hello." Several took these rocks and put them on other graves, specifically children they noticed. (my heart swells with the innocence and beauty of childhood)

Last night, I received a Gracie Award for my hosting of the #1619Project docuseries. I was shocked because as a print reporter, I never expected to be on air and certainly not win an award for best on-air talent. And I can tell you, doing documentary confirmed why I am a print journalist and not a broadcast journalist — few things are as humbling as watching yourself on film from every unflattering angle for six straight hours. But what an amazing honor to receive this award in a room full of absolute icons, bad-ass women who blazed trails across the media and entertainment landscape. As I stood looking out, I thought about two women who allowed me to get on that stage. My mom, Cheryl Hannah, who gave me my strong sense of justice, of always rooting for the underdog, and supported every single dream I’ve ever had. And my grandmama, Arlene Tillman, born on a cotton field, forced to leave school after the 4th grade, who fled the South when my dad was a toddler so that her children would never have to pick cotton. She worked her entire life as a domestic and a janitor, but if she hadn’t made that decision, I would not have been able to become what I have become. I am, as always, grateful. (And y’all know, I love getting dressed up🙏🏽)

Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre’s 2024 season of four productions will open with the outstanding original musical 1619: THE JOURNEY OF A PEOPLE by Chicago writer and performer Ted Williams III. FJT is proudly partnering with Evanston Public Library and Northwestern University for this highly anticipated production. The musical commemorates the arrival of the first 20 or so Africans on the shores of Point Comfort, Virginia, on August 20, 1619. In it, three modern- day characters lead audience members on a journey through multiple performance pieces, leaving viewers both inspired and challenged about the progress of America’s African sons and daughters. This production uses various musical forms including hip-hop, jazz, gospel, and blues, to commemorate the struggle for survival and equality and to celebrate the stories and journeys of America’s African sons and daughters. What a morning. Another ubiquitous KAREN, a apt manager at 1000 Washington. Confronted me invoking her White Privileges. DUH. I was drinking coffee and talking with a friend. When she pointed her index finger towards my face. It was “Orange Turd” inspired. Shortly thereafter, making an UberEats delivery. I encountered a UFC FIGHTER at the Arch. 🙏🏿💯🙏🏿

It’s my opinion that Blondie’s is UNSAFE for people of Color. It’s tantamount to AIDING AND ABETTING White Supremacy. After swindling me out of $500. One of the criminals, he owns Blondie’s with his brothers. Smiled and waved at me yesterday, invoking his WHITE PRIVILEGES. Upon reflection, it was meek yet informative. Unknowingly, I waved back. It was an extremely DUH moment. Tim Scott and ilk, enjoy your MTG Brunch Special at Blondie’s, “Orange Turd”, served Southern Mentality Style

The story of Cinco de Mayo • Cinco de Mayo IS NOT a brown 4th of July. Mexican Independence Day is actually Sept 16. May 5 commemorates a huge win for Mexico - and for half of the U.S. • 1861. Mexico is dealing with money drama with the Brits, Spanish, and French. Mexico made a deal with the UK and Spain, but France wanted that money - after losing their prized Haiti they needed it all. Meanwhile, Napoleon #3 had plans to expand the French empire into Mexico and maybe even the US while the US was killing each other over the future of 4 million enslaved American Africans. Top Hat Lincoln now had a big problem: Fight the Confederate South AND fight the French at the same damn time if they got past Mexico. The US was literally on the verge of changing its history forever • July 17, 1861. Napoleon 3 starts his war with Mexico, 1st landing on Veracruz. BOOM ! TKO. And the Mexican Prezzy, Benito Juarez, goes into retreat. Then, in May 1862, they prance towards Mexico City. But on the way, they run into General Ignacio “Los Deebó” Zaragoza and his ill equipped but MUY determined goon squad of 2,000 Vatos ready to defend their homeland from 6,000 European invaders. Yea, outnumbered by over 4,000 soldiers! But ooooooh somebody tell ya neighbor “But Dío.” Deebó Zaragoza’s forces stunned the French, winning the Battle of Puebla in a day and only lost 100 men • Here’s the CRAZY (and scary) plot twist: Had the French defeated that little ol Mexican army, they were going to use Puebla to establish a base to support the Confederate South in the Civil War. #cincodemayo #mexico #mexicanhistory #AmericanHistory #slavery #nojusticenopeace✊🏾✊🏿✊🏽  #bethechange  #1619project #listenmoretalkless  #riseup  #inspireothers  #foundingfathersfacts  #FoundingFathersTruth #foundingfathers  #endwhiteprivilege  #repost by @black_ourstory

This is the fourth installment of the MelonColony series. The following brief mentioning is how the series came about. Some years ago, after slicing open a watermelon, the visual familiarity was undeniably evident. I asked myself “Where have I seen this imagery before?” The hull of the enslavement ships came to mind. The seeds in the watermelon were aligned like the enslaved Africans and a few years later, I started painting these images. This installment of MelonColony IV has made its rounds, exhibiting and lectured at the WBCA in White Bear, Minnesota and was exhibited for over a year at the Golden Thyme Cafe in the Rondo Community St. Paul, MN. The other three versions of MelonColony have been proudly collected by a School Board Associate, Urban League Member and a Motivational Speaker. #slavery #racisminamerica #inhumane #1619project #americanhistory #blacklivesmatter #1619 #urbanleague #blackprogression #blackartist #anericanartists #redlining #georgefloyd #emmittill #breonnataylor #duluthlynchings #healingamerica #equality

✨The 1619 Project: A new origin story✨ . This book is absolutely fundamental read. Through a collection of essays on subjects like race, capitalism, democracy, medicine, and fear, the 1619 Project reframes the US historical narrative putting slavery and the Black experience front and center, rather than just as a topic in passing. US history has been mythologized. The 1619 Project seeks to examine the true lessons of how our country was founded and how we got to where we are today. It’s shocking how much of our past has been ignored, distorted, or simply erased. Here are just a few examples of significant events explored in this book that I bet most Americans have never heard of (please look these up in addition to reading these books): . ✨ The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) ✨ The Black Codes ✨ Red Summer ✨ The Oceoo Massacre ✨ Wilmington Coup d’etat (yes, there has been a coup in the US) ✨ MOVE bombing by the government of its own citizens in Philadelphia . Be prepared to learn much, much more. . “The truth is that as much democracy as this nation has today, it has been borne on the backs of Black resistance and visions for equality. Our founding fathers may not have actually believed in the ideals they espoused, but Black people did.” - Nikole Hannah-Jones (‘Democracy’) . This is a five ⭐️ book and everyone should read it. Learning to examine history critically and un-do indoctrination is important if we want to actually learn the lessons of the past and hopefully one day find justice…not just relevant to the US but from here to Palestine. . . . #1619project #the1619project #nikolehannahjones #history #ushistory #truth #justice #equality #bestbooks #bestreads #besthistorybooks #read #readers #readersgonnaread #readersofinstagram #readersofig #readersofinsta #igbooks #igbookreview #igbookstagram #igbookclub #instabooks #instabookstagram #instabookclub #instabooklovers #booklover #bookworm #booksbooksbooks

Trust Black Women • Follow Black Women • Love Black Women • Protect Black Women • Honor Black Women Earlier this month I got to share space with some incredible Black Women Leaders, who completely filled my cup. One was @nikolehannahjones who wrote the #1619Project Her courage, and frankly brilliance, to uncover and share the history of our arrival to this country and the intersectionality of our then and our now — systems, politics, education, finances — is incredible. What she gave to our community is something I know we all will carry forward with us. Chancellor Sheila Edwards-Lange, Mayor Victoria Woodards, Washington State House of Representatives Debra Entenmen, Chief Executive Officer Carol Mitchell, Vice President Mentha Hynes Wilson, and Philanthropist Andrea Caupain, I stand grateful for your many contributions in the fight for Black Liberation and Prosperity. I am always humbled to be in your presence and learn from you each and every time we connect. Thank you for being courageous and graceful. Thank you for leading even when it hurts. Thank you for representing the voiceless. Thank you for teaching me so much about how to be a Black woman leading in America. • • • • • • • • #trustblackwomen #followblackwomen #loveblackwomen #protectblackwomen #honorblackwomen

Posted ⚫️🟡🔴 @Essence The city in Illinois is one step closer to getting reparations! In a landmark decision in 2019, Evanston, Illinois, enacted a reparations fund for its Black residents who were at least 18 years old from 1919 until 1969 and their descendants who were affected by systemically racist policies, mainly redlining. Now, $17 million in funding will be transferred to one of Illinois’s only Black-owned banks, Liberty Bank, valued at $1 billion. Liberty Bank also provided services for first-time home buyers who chose to use their reparations funding for mortgages and has offered 100% refinancing on predatory loans, the outlet reports. Evanston Reparations Committee Chair Robin Rue Simmons told the Chicago Tribune, “ $17 million in a Black bank is going to give more lending power and access to Black businesses, Black mortgages that are fair and other forms of support, so this is a very, very big deal.” To read more about this landmark funding, visit ESSENCE.com. Finally got the nameplate for my Emmy for the #1619project HULU series and am reminded of the times when I was told that wanting to write about race would “pigeonhole” me as a journalist, that wanting to write about Black people was a sign of my bias and would stymie my career — and for a while, it did. But writing these stories was the only reason I ever wanted to be a journalist, so I kept writing them despite the consequences. That’s why awards such as this mean so much. Not because I need accolades from these institutions to give my work value, but because it feels so good to prove those folks who didn’t see the value in Black stories so wrong.

The ones that got away, borrowed book edition. These are the big boys and heavy texts that I ran out of time with, as I am forever stretching the limits of my library’s benevolence. But, this practice has become the backbone of my home-library planning: to check out books I suspect I’ll want to own, perusing their pages, then finding my own copies (usually at a used bookshop). This has helped me decrease the amount of books I buy impulsively only to be disappointed by the book itself. Sure, we only have so much space for my books, so this has been my way of making sure my collection is curated and much loved. These are all gems, and notably, nonfiction. I realized when taking this photo that much of my to-be-bought books tend to be nonfiction, maybe because I love to fill my home with literature about my interests and my profession. Or, maybe it is because I have convinced myself that nonfiction has the teaching value, and we are a homeschooling family after all. I am a master of justification. #homelibrarygoals

In his seminal book Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America, Lerone Bennett Jr. writes: “A year before the arrival of the celebrated Mayflower, 113 years before the birth of George Washington... this ship sailed into the harbor at Jamestown, Virginia, and dropped anchor into the muddy waters of history. It was clear to the men who received this “Dutch Man of War” that she was no ordinary vessel. What seems unusual today is that no one sensed how extraordinary she really was. For few ships before or since, have unloaded a more momentous cargo.” In August of 1619 English pirates landed in Jamestown and the colonists there bought twenty to thirty enslaved people from them. The pirates had kidnapped them from a Portuguese ship that had sailed from Angola. These Africans were the first of more than 12.5 million people to be violently taken from their homes in “the largest forced migration in human history until the Second World War.” Among those who landed that summer day was a woman named Isabella, who later gave birth to William, the first African-American. The history of the United States cannot be separated from the history of slavery. In his Teaching Hard History report for the Southern Poverty Law Center, historian Hasan Kwame Jeffries stated, “Although we teach [students] that slavery happened... in some cases, we minimize slavery’s significance so much that we render its impact- on people and on the nation- inconsequential.” This lack of understanding about the roots of racial injustice leads to intolerance and “prevents us from seeing this long legacy and leads policymakers to try to fix people instead of addressing the historically rooted causes of their problems.” This Renaissance dress was built entirely out of recycled jeans and zippers by Brandeis students to honor the memory of Isabella’s life. #1619project #1619 #endslavery #endslaverynow #upcycling #upcycledfashion #denim #jeans

🕯️ Reflecting on the Roots of Our Nation at UW Tacoma 🕯️ An enlightening evening with Nikole Hannah-Jones, the mind behind the #1619Project, as she delved into the pivotal role of slavery in shaping American history. 📜🔗 Her compelling narrative shed light on the year 1619, marking the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to Virginia, a moment that preludes the traditional historical markers of 1776 and 1620. This re-examination invites us to confront the uncomfortable truths and the profound influence of slavery on our nation's foundation. ⛓️ A heartfelt thank you to Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards for setting the stage with her inspiring introduction. And a special moment for our Hub Program Coordinator, Leoule Goshu, who met with these remarkable leaders. 🤝 #federalwayhub #highlinecollege #uwtacoma #uwtacomapdc #federalwaypublicschools #cityoffederalway #highereducation #federalway #thehub #southkingcounty #washingtonstate #college #collegeready @highlinecollege @federalwaypublicschools @fedwaywa @uwtacoma @uwtacomapdc
