To the collectors of Fritz Scholder’s art, the name Donna Fuller may not spark any recognition. “Swimming Hole,” 2024, Stanley, 152cm x 183cm, acrylic, encáustic, tape and fabric on canvas, on a wood cradle. “The story is told by Kathie Smith Littlejohn. It’s called, “The Origin of The Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s about a woman that had a garden that she meticulously kept and would furiously wave her hands at children who passed through it to get to the swimming hole. She scared the children and angered their parents. The conjure woman became angry at her for this and turned her into a woodpecker. The lady’s black dress became feathers and her red scarf turned into a red topknot of the bird. Now she takes care of trees in the forest. I painted here the moment as she transitions from woman to bird. The conjure woman is seen in her boldness conducting the transformation. Imperative here to underline the dynamism of a transformative moment like the action of the spell described in the story. My drawing of the “Origin of the Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s a Cherokee story about a woman that had a garden that she spent all her time in, cutting and planting and keeping it so perfect that she would get upset whenever children would come into it. There was an old watering hole near where she lived. Children loved to swim there. The only problem was that the only path to water went through her garden. Whenever she’d see children going across her garden, she’d run outside and start waving her hands furiously at the them, in an effort to chase them away. “When the House is a Wreck” Ink on paper. 12x9 in. I drew this “emotional illustration” during a time where we were so busy and had so many things going on- weekday job, art business travel, writing and practicing a speech (which takes me ages), house renovation projects, company, etc etc- that I could never catch up on cleaning and organizing the few rooms of the house I had control over at the time. It felt like the more disorganized my house got, the more every aspect of my life felt stressful and overstimulating. Social situations felt draining and frantic in a way that never refreshed after I got home and crashed- starting the next day all over again with whatever felt most urgent or obligated to accomplish. Eventually, as the cycle of seasons go, I was able to find pockets of time and wrap some big things up- giving the chance to get a handle on my home environment. The knotted ball of anxiety and overwhelm eased. It’s my visual reflection that one thing or circumstance can affect every aspect of life. A quick doodle I got to finish last night + one of my inspos at the very end :) • I like playing with color a lot - even if the subject matter is something that may traditionally be done with a more subdued palette. This piece deals with loss and grief as well but I like to portray it in a way where everything feels almost too bold and “lively”. • I think once we’re by ourselves and going through such a difficult time - it’s easy to see things in black and white. To be disregulated and to feel like time is almost pausing. But once we’re out in the real world we have to manage our feelings and “adjust.” I feel like once we take this approach and shove everything down - the world feels almost too bright (hence his sunglasses) and too mismatched with our own internal experience. • It’s a theme I’ve been thinking about lately. I guess I can relate it to the way we pair contrasting colors for them to enhance each other - our differing simultaneous experiences can be numbing but overwhelming. Our joy may be loud - but it can highlight the parts of us that haven’t felt that in a while. Loss can be saddening but make us grateful to reach the age we’re at now….just my thoughts :) • Too deep for a Saturday afternoon? Quarters used to be made with silver and this made me think about how silver wasn’t introduced to the Zuni tribe until Spanish contact. The Zunis mainly traded and made materials with copper so I changed the look from silver to a copper coin to connect more with the accuracy of my tribe’s history. I on the other hand live in a space where much of what I make and see in my work comes from dreams that are ever present. Before joining our art community, I didn’t know much about pottery designs and didn’t feel comfortable doing my own iterations. However, my partner told me that our designs come from our own interpretations of nature and moisture and sometimes from other people’s designs. I decided that I would take this approach with being inspired by what I see but add my own interpretation as someone who’s mixed and has a more modern art style. I wanted to show an evolution with the times and how you can make a space for your own self expression. A beautiful deer walked into our gallery yesterday. Exquisite! Sean Rising Sun Flanagan is a Native American artist and traditional drum maker from the Taos Pueblo located at the steps of the majestic Sangre De Cristos mountains in northern New Mexico. His wonderful works have found homes around the world and can be seen at several galleries and museums around the country. Renown for his painted drums and stylized sculptures, Sean draws inspiration from the traditional images of his native roots. His Drums are traditionally made from deer, elk and buffalo hides and are painted with a remarkable sense of design that unites deep tradition with the contemporary. Sean’s stylized sculptures and design motifs are integrated with form and color that result in a strong and vibrant balance that can be described as geometrical and organic at the same time. On view now - “Seminal Scholder” features early work by Contemporary Native American artist Fritz Scholder. Contact to schedule a private viewing. This small yet powerful painting of a skull is literally created from Fritz Scholder’s own blood. The artist suffered from diabetes and before his death in 2005, he spent time traveling to doctors who would monitor his health. Before leaving the hospital, Scholder would convince the various nurses to slip him a vial of his own blood. Later he would draw small paintings of skulls on hotel stationary with a mixture of this very blood and diet coke. Scholder had a lifelong fascination with the afterlife and mysticism. These “Blood Drawings” were clearly an artistic contemplation of his impending mortality. However, nothing is as simple as it seems when it comes to Scholder’s work. The paper was a conscious choice - motel stationary. At the bottom of the page is printed “For Reservations Call 1-800 HOTELS 1”. The word play shifts the intent. Fritz Scholder often referred to Francis Bacon as a great artistic inspiration. Hailing from a creative generation impacted by the British icon, Scholder’s work is infused with similar stylistic elements and emotional truths. Both artists were successful in creating a visceral intensity that abrasively confronts the viewer. They explored darker aspects of the human psyche and themes of existential angst, mortality, and the human condition. In contrast, Scholder’s work extends beyond this individual experience and invites discourse to vast Indigenous historical and cultural trauma. “Indian, After Bacon” is clear, precise and direct. It is a painting that pays great homage to one of Scholder’s most valued artistic inspirations. At the same time, it is an artwork that is innately Native.
