“Swimming Hole,” 2024, Stanley, 152cm x 183cm, acrylic, encáustic, tape and fabric on canvas, on a wood cradle. “The story is told by Kathie Smith Littlejohn. It’s called, “The Origin of The Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s about a woman that had a garden that she meticulously kept and would furiously wave her hands at children who passed through it to get to the swimming hole. She scared the children and angered their parents. The conjure woman became angry at her for this and turned her into a woodpecker. The lady’s black dress became feathers and her red scarf turned into a red topknot of the bird. Now she takes care of trees in the forest. I painted here the moment as she transitions from woman to bird. The conjure woman is seen in her boldness conducting the transformation. Imperative here to underline the dynamism of a transformative moment like the action of the spell described in the story. My drawing of the “Origin of the Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s a Cherokee story about a woman that had a garden that she spent all her time in, cutting and planting and keeping it so perfect that she would get upset whenever children would come into it. There was an old watering hole near where she lived. Children loved to swim there. The only problem was that the only path to water went through her garden. Whenever she’d see children going across her garden, she’d run outside and start waving her hands furiously at the them, in an effort to chase them away. With my #VeniceBiennale posts, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share some photos from my “AfriCOBRA: Nation Time” exhibition that was one of the Venice Biennale’s official collateral events in 2019. Though it was 5 years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. Something interesting happened on this trip: several folks mentioned seeing the show in 2019 and shared how they and other folks thought it was one of the best exhibitions that year. At first I was a bit taken aback and then I remembered that curating is storytelling, and when the art is stellar, telling the story as a curator is a dream. I am deeply committed to supporting Elder artists and sharing their work with the world because they’ve been the most collaborative, inspiring and passionate folks I’ve worked with. And, they deserve to take up as much space as they want in a contemporary art world that primarily wants to see only younger artists. Yes, some Elders are finally getting their just due and for some, it’s too late, and while this is the case, many may not receive the royal curatorial treatment before they transition to the next timeline. “Bear Shirt 2,” 2024, Stanley, 5 x 7’, acrylic, tape, cloth and encaustic on canvas on a wood cradle. This is the first offspring of “Bearshirt,” a painting I posted here, late last year. It was purchased recently by the Cherokee Nation. After a morning of searching, I found my grandparents’ old abandoned home: wood dwelling that was built probably in the 1930’s. It became the subject of a painting called, “Bear Shirt.” The result was so important for me that I felt it a crime not to do more versions of it in order to familiarize myself with the type of role I established in my process. I call it a masterpiece which means master piece. Like master key.
