A guy I knew, Gary Floyd, RIP. TAF with one of his roommates, Dolores. I spent a lot of time at his house. Played hearts a lot with Toby. I met Santiago H., there. Me, a disco music lover of 19 years old, 1980, from conservative Dallas, landed in Austin for school at UT. Gary was the first openly gay dude I’d ever interacted with. He showed me the limits of creativity, offensivity (= none),…and respectation. I made killer tees for the band and helped him plan a “bloody Kotex, nurse performance,” for one of his first shows. I met him when he was a poster band and then watch them roll into instant stardom. I still had the dicks influence all over me when I hightailed it to Spain after Ronald Ray gun was elected. It’s called, “The Origin of The Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s about a woman that had a garden that she meticulously kept and would furiously wave her hands at children who passed through it to get to the swimming hole. She scared the children and angered their parents. The conjure woman became angry at her for this and turned her into a woodpecker. The lady’s black dress became feathers and her red scarf turned into a red topknot of the bird. Now she takes care of trees in the forest. I painted here the moment as she transitions from woman to bird. The conjure woman is seen in her boldness conducting the transformation. Imperative here to underline the dynamism of a transformative moment like the action of the spell described in the story. My drawing of the “Origin of the Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s a Cherokee story about a woman that had a garden that she spent all her time in, cutting and planting and keeping it so perfect that she would get upset whenever children would come into it. There was an old watering hole near where she lived. Children loved to swim there. The only problem was that the only path to water went through her garden. Whenever she’d see children going across her garden, she’d run outside and start waving her hands furiously at the them, in an effort to chase them away. “Bear Shirt 2,” 2024, Stanley, 5 x 7’, acrylic, tape, cloth and encaustic on canvas on a wood cradle. This is the first offspring of “Bearshirt,” a painting I posted here, late last year. It was purchased recently by the Cherokee Nation. After a morning of searching, I found my grandparents’ old abandoned home: wood dwelling that was built probably in the 1930’s. It became the subject of a painting called, “Bear Shirt.” The result was so important for me that I felt it a crime not to do more versions of it in order to familiarize myself with the type of role I established in my process. I call it a masterpiece which means master piece. Like master key. This painting reflects the two sides of bear energy. Conceived and completed during the moon’s fullest cycle in September, noises outside woke me up. Once outside, I opened my front gate and a bear was there, bathed in the moonlight, 6 feet away, sitting down in the leaves, eating. He turned his head and our eyes met. He stood up, taller than me, slowly turned around and then ran away faster than I ever could. I then found my beehive turned over. The top part looked like it had exploded from the inside, honey everywhere. I was stung many times that night and the experience of the bear is reflected in this painting. The place in the painting is my Grandmother's old house near Muskogee. The roof has caved in and the living room is full of leaves and vines. There was a beehive off to the right. This this painting is about the nature of the bear: explosive yet grounded and sometimes slow, sometimes fast. Grandmother’s house here is a metaphor for bear energy, it has the appearance of fast and sudden destruction, yet it was slowly over time, dragged towards a deeper connection with nature.
