In 1957 he moved with his family to California where he enrolled at Sacramento College and studied with Wayne Theibaud. He soon began showing work throughout the region, receiving a solo exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum and exhibiting at the Palace of Legion of Honor. In 1960 he received a full scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation to attend the University of Arizona, Tucson, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. After completion of the program he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to teach at the Institute of American Indian Arts. After five years he resigned to pursue painting full-time. Over the course of his career he accrued many honors, such as grants from the Ford, Rockefeller and Whitney foundations and residencies at Dartmouth College and the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute.

Although Fritz Scholder did not consider himself an Indian, he was regarded as a leader of the New American Indian Art Movement. From the beginning, he struggled to represent the landscape and people of the Southwest without indulging in the romantic clichés of genre art on the Native themes. In time, he created an extraordinary fusion of abstract expressionism, surrealism and Pop art to express his unique vision of the Southwestern scene and the Native experience. His brushwork is generally swift, and the tone often somber and surreal. Although best known for his paintings, Scholder produced work in a variety of media - lithographs, photographs, sculpture and books. His work is in dozens of museum collections. “I’m interested in someone reacting to the work. And I don’t much care if they react negatively or positively, as long as they react. I felt it to be a compliment when I was told that I had destroyed the traditional style of Indian art.” Last Indian With American Flag, 1970 36 x 30 inches Another Deco Indian, Artist Proof, 1978 30 x 22 inches Buckskin Indian - Magenta, #66/70, 1974 30 x 22 inches #FritzScholder #WesternContemporary #IndianArtMovement #Lithographs

Opened in February at Little Rock’s Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (@arkmfa), “Action/Abstraction Redefined: Modern Native Art, 1940s to 1970s” explores the conversation among dozens of Native artists in the fields of Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, and Hard-Edge Painting. Drawn from the collection of Santa Fe’s Institute of American Indian Arts (@instituteofamericanindianarts), the show presents 52 works by 36 artists (including George Morrison, Fritz Scholder, and T.C. Cannon) whose influences still echo throughout contemporary Native art. “Action/Abstraction Redefined” is on view through May 26. #arkmfa #actionabstractionredefined #nativeart #modernart #contemporaryart #georgemorrison #fritzscholder #tccannon #artdesk #readartdesk [Image: Donald (Don) F. Love Wayne Thiebaud’s work. Thiebaud, along with Gregory Kondos, were among the professors who taught Fritz Scholder while he was in school in Sacramento, CA in the late 1950s. This is when Scholder developed his love of color and thick butter paint that became part of his style during his “Indian Series” between 1967-1980. #waynethiebaud #fritzscholder #paint #painting #color #coloration #bayareaartist #deyoung #deyoungmuseum #popart #stilllife #artmuseum #artcurator #sanfrancisco #arthistory #americanart #americanarthistory

Fritz Scholder’s colors, themes, and challenges to the status-quo in Native arts underscore his place as a foundational artist in the TMA collection. Scholder was attentive to deconstructing stereotypes, romantic notions, and misrepresentations of Indigenous peoples in the late 20th century. His style consisted of modern, abstract, and Pop art influences, but his subjects were frequently reflective of Native cultures of the day and his personal studies at the time. This painting was included in a retrospective of Scholder’s work in 1981 at TMA and was inspired by his travels to Egypt and interests in ancient sarcophagi. On view in James and Louise Glasser Galleries, Earl Kai Chann Gallery, and Lois C. Green Gallery Image credit: Fritz Scholder, Luiseño (1937 – 2005), American Portrait #28, 1981, oil on canvas. Collection of the Tucson Museum of Art. Gift of the Artist. To the collectors of Fritz Scholder’s art, the name Donna Fuller may not spark any recognition. The image of his “Mystery Woman”, however, looms large in his body of work; his imagery of a petite, blonde model populates many of his mid-career canvases. For years, the identity of this figure has been the subject of speculation and intrigue, in part because Scholder himself was often cryptic about his work, preferring to leave interpretation open to the viewer. Freeman’s | Hindman is honored to present the Estate of Donna Fuller this May 9th in our Western and Contemporary Native American Art featuring a stunning selection of works by Fritz Scholder from his “Mystery Woman” series. @nativepop #fritzscholder

Indian with Beer Can’ challenges perceptions, juxtaposing stereotype with reality, tradition with modernity. Fritz Scholder’s bold vision confronts us, urging a deeper look beyond the canvas. 🎨🍺 #FritzScholder Fritz Scholder’s “Indian with Beer Can” was part of a series that aimed to demystify romanticized views of Native Americans. Scholder often portrayed his subjects with a raw and honest lens, not shying away from the contemporary issues and contradictions they faced. This painting, like many in his “Indian” series, intended to subvert the traditional, often noble, depictions of Native peoples by incorporating modern elements like the beer can. This inclusion is poignant and provocative, serving as both a commentary on the problems of alcoholism that affect many communities, including Native American ones, and a critique of the simplistic and often judgmental way in which broader society views these problems. Scholder’s work invites viewers to question their assumptions and to recognize the complex, lived realities of Indigenous peoples. #NativeAmericanArt #StereotypesVsReality #Aho

SOLD! A comprehensive book of paintings by the “critically neglected” Native American artist Fritz Scholder published in 1982 by Rizzoli New York. Scholder was a member of the Luiseño tribe, or Payómkawichum (“People of the West”), the indigenous people of California. An original thinker, his paintings are large, bold extravaganzas of color with abstract, often loosely defined images. And although Native American and Egyptian culture loom large in his work, the paintings are unmistakably his own unique expression of the magic within people and nature. In 1975, Scholder was quoted as saying, “In today’s world, love, art and magic are greatly needed.” Paintings, lithographs, paintings, bronzes, drawings and monotypes are brought to life across 375 illustrations including 129 in color. Fritz Scholder, a pivotal figure in 20th-century American art, is best known for his profound and often provocative depictions of Native American life and identity. Part Native American himself, Scholder challenged the romanticized, stereotypical portrayals of Indigenous peoples prevalent in American art, offering instead a raw, unvarnished perspective that blended elements of pop art, expressionism, and surrealism. His work from the late 1960s onwards broke new ground by portraying Native Americans with a complexity and honesty that had rarely been seen before. Scholder’s paintings often featured vibrant colors and dynamic compositions, infusing traditional themes with contemporary relevance and stirring public dialogue about Native American history and representation. Through his influential teaching and prolific output, Scholder played a crucial role in inspiring a generation of Native American artists and reshaping American art’s landscape. His legacy is celebrated for its daring challenge to the status quo and its lasting impact on the perception and portrayal of Indigenous cultures in art. #fritzscholder #art #artist

On view now - “Seminal Scholder” features early work by Contemporary Native American artist Fritz Scholder. Contact to schedule a private viewing. This small yet powerful painting of a skull is literally created from Fritz Scholder’s own blood. The artist suffered from diabetes and before his death in 2005, he spent time traveling to doctors who would monitor his health. Before leaving the hospital, Scholder would convince the various nurses to slip him a vial of his own blood. Later he would draw small paintings of skulls on hotel stationary with a mixture of this very blood and diet coke. Scholder had a lifelong fascination with the afterlife and mysticism. These “Blood Drawings” were clearly an artistic contemplation of his impending mortality. However, nothing is as simple as it seems when it comes to Scholder’s work. The paper was a conscious choice - motel stationary. At the bottom of the page is printed “For Reservations Call 1-800 HOTELS 1”. The word play shifts the intent. The word “reservations”, a meditation on personal mortality, expands into a dense cultural and historical critique. “Untitled (Blood with Skull)”, Circa 2000 Artist’ blood on paper 6.75” x 3.75” #fritzscholder #seminalscholder #blooddrawing #bloodskullseries #scholder #contemporarynativeamericanart #nativeart #americanart #worksonpaper #tbcontemporary #iaia

Fritz Scholder often referred to Francis Bacon as a great artistic inspiration. Hailing from a creative generation impacted by the British icon, Scholder’s work is infused with similar stylistic elements and emotional truths. Both artists were successful in creating a visceral intensity that abrasively confronts the viewer. They explored darker aspects of the human psyche and themes of existential angst, mortality, and the human condition. In contrast, Scholder’s work extends beyond this individual experience and invites discourse to vast Indigenous historical and cultural trauma. “Indian, After Bacon” is clear, precise and direct. It is a painting that pays great homage to one of Scholder’s most valued artistic inspirations. At the same time, it is an artwork that is innately Native. This frightfully compelling painting is a seminal example in Scholder’s acclaimed “Indian” series. “Indian, After Bacon”, 1969 Oil on canvas 12.5” x 8.5” #fritzscholder #seminalscholder #tbcontemporary #francisbacon #oilpainting #contemporaryart #americanart #contemporarynativeamericanart #nativeart #scholder

Through the dichotomy between tradition and modernism, Fritz Scholder wrought a completely unique artistic voice and vision. His most sought after artworks contain elements of emotional intensity, compositional balance, minimal lines and distinct mark-making. In this captivating work, we see Scholder’s masterful skill as a draftsperson. A single arched line, a gesture, suggests the figure in place and space - perhaps sitting atop a hill overlooking the past, present and future. The haunting face, traditional hair braids and western-style top hat all lay beneath the parasol, which serves to protect the figure. Scholder wields an elegant simplicity to ground his figure. A triumph of minimalism. “Untitled (Indian with Parasol)”, Circa 1970 Charcoal on paper 16.75” x 23” #fritzscholder #seminalscholder #drawing #nativeart #contemporarynativeamericanart #americanart #francisbacon #tbcontemporary #charcoaldrawing

As much as Scholder’s exploration of abstraction reflects his deep appreciation for the natural world and his desire to connect with the elemental forces that shape it, they also have a direct connection to Southwestern Indigenous blankets. Like the Navajo weavers who infuse their textiles with symbolic meaning and spiritual significance, Scholder imbues his paintings with a sense of reverence for the land and its enduring presence in the collective consciousness. Early Navajo blankets, meant to be worn, allow their horizontal bands to extend beyond the borders - embracing the limitless horizon. Scholder mimics this powerful design decision. His abstract landscapes become meditations on the universe and the interconnectedness of all living things. These abstract landscapes invite viewers to contemplate and expand their own place within the vast tapestry of existence. “Stripes #1”, 1969 Oil on canvas 16” x 16” #tbcontemporary #fritzscholder #contemporarynativeamericanart #seminalscholder #americanart #nativeart #abstractart #nativeabstraction #abstractlandscape #oilpainting
