Beauty, frailty, elegance, How much a lost garden may hide! I am standing with my feet on my ground. I have been posting very rarely lately. Now I feel I need to show more often bits and pieces of my work, thoughts and concerns. It is not necessarily a project – though it might evolve into one. It is rather a body of work that I am attending to, waiting to see how it grows. LAMENT FOR A LOST GARDEN. Last spring I have started to turn more often to look at nature from my surroundings. It took me about ten years of oblivion – in spite of the fact I saw the forest almost every day. Recently I realized the reason of my oblivion. Looking at the forest brought for me a terrible longing for the lost garden of my childhood. It seems strange and not reasonable at all. What I have been actually doing for the last n years? - crocheting small spaces and images in a sort of meditative manner - (re) creating a seed of the story –telling and connecting it with a real historical narrative - sewing and embroidering on old – salvaged family domestic items of cloth - dyeing fabrics and some attempts of eco-printing - making cordage from collected forest plants and old found pieces of clothing - learning a bit of basketry making - pressing collected plants and making cyanotypes with them, and found antique lace and doilies - drawing…and drawing again. Enough story for today. The chosen cyanotype does not cover it all …and it does not need to cover it. There will be others to join, taken out from files and drawers were they lay hidden.

Notes on The Philosophy of Art: What constitutes Art? In his book, 'What Art Is' (2013), Arthur Danto asks a question — What constitutes art? This question, to be sure, is breathtakingly confounding. Moreover, how can anyone even begin to formulate a definitional answer to such a question? 🎨 Any given response to this question is bound to be contentious. In ancient Athens, art was generally deemed to be a kind of delusive imitation. For example, Plato repudiated artistic creation as mimetical simulacrum; thus, art seemed to exist as an imperfect representation of truth. Since Plato, however, philosophers throughout history have proposed hugely influential but conflicting hypotheses in order to solve this question. Some of the most celebrated works in the philosophy of art (aesthetics) have been Kant's 'Critique of the Power of Judgment' (1790), Hegel's 'The Phenomenology of Spirit' (1807), Nietzsche's 'The Birth of Tragedy' (1872), Heidegger's 'On the Origin of the Work of Art' (1935), and Adorno's 'Aesthetic Theory' (1970). The advent of modernism in the twentieth century made significant contributions to furthering philosophical perspectives in art theory. In particular, Duchamp's 'Fountain' (1917), Cage's '4'33' (1953), and Rauschenberg's 'White Paintings' (1951) all radically revolutionized art by virtue of positioning it in new theoretical manners in order to critically re-problematize the nature of aesthetical thinking. 📚 Instead of answering this question, I would like to pose the following questions: (i) Given art's expensive nature, can one thus derive some sort of essentialist and foundationalist definition that is operative in all its socio-cultural, historical, and temporal configurations? (ii) Or, conversely, I wonder whether Wittgensteinian and Socratic anti-essentialist and anti-foundationalist refutation of definitive philosophical determinations can equally apply to the question of art. And if so, what are the consequences of such a conclusion? 💭

(Part I) Notes on Existence: Art, Science, and the Unknown In his 'Letter of the Seer' (1871), Rimbaud writes that the artist must become a ‘seer’ [1] — That is to say, a kind of ‘visionary voyager’ who “reaches the unknown"[2] through a sustained and systematic "derangement of all the senses" [3]. The seer, then, seeks out and cultivates all sensations which are, in turn, consumed and exhausted. In this manner, I infer, he generally espouses a qualitative, descriptive, and existential account of the artist. They are creators of senses who often exact the articulation of their own phenomenal experience as it is lived; thus, for them, existence gives experience in the formation of sensualities. Moreover, I think, it could be argued that any (aesthetical) theory of art itself must necessarily lie in this understanding of the artist as an individual concerned with the examination of their own sensuous experience.✍️📝✨ In a similar vein to Rimbaud, Keats, in a letter (1817), writes that Shakespeare possessed the enormous artistic power to remain completely content with this great sense of the unknown. He terms this insight ‘negative capability’ [4] — That is to say, the artist retains the capacity, as indeed Shakespeare exhibited, to exist and to go on living with "uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, [and doing so] without any irritable reaching after fact and reason” whatsoever [5]. Importantly, what is correlated with the two statements, I think, is the emphasis placed on the artist's experiential, individualistic, and sensual search for phenomenal lived experience that faces, with no definitive closure, the unknown. In other words, perhaps one purpose of the artist — whether they are a poet, musician, or painter — is to arouse this sense of mystery.🖋️🖌️🎤

Art can make a difference; thus, we must use our creativity, our imagination, our art, and any means necessary in order to incite this change. The systemic coercion, violence, and complete genocide of the Palestinian people is one of the most abhorrent injustices, and heart-wrenching horrors, of the twenty-first century: no more theory, semantics, or philosophy is necessary. We must use our voices, and we must reframe from endless and useless discussions that fall down this hopeless theoretic abyss – WE MUST SHOW FULL SOLIDARITY AND ACT NOW! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸 Faced with the political disillusionment of the world, W. H. Auden once confessedly wrote that “poetry makes nothing happen”. Can the same be said of art more generally? On the contrary, I believe such a sweepingly pessimistic determination is profoundly mistaken. In my view, what constitutes the elevated sublimity of the artistic works of Shakespeare, Keats, or indeed even Beethoven is their potent transfiguring sensuousness. Art seems to issue forth the full truth of our existence: to open up our hearts to the world, to feel, and to wake us up to our own sense of aliveness. For me, this transcendent vision of art as the highest truth is clearly articulated in the writings of Wilde and Nietzsche. “The mystical in art, the mystical in life, the mystical in nature this [experience] is what I am looking for. Notes on Existential, Humanitarian, and Geopolitical Threats: Ukraine, Palestine, and Global Warming There are, of course, numerous pressing threats; however, I think the most urgent concerns that demand our utmost attention in general appear to be threefold. Firstly, Putin’s unjust military invasion of Ukraine consequently poses severe repercussions to the infrastructural European landscape in terms of international law, diplomacy, and security. The economic, political, and historical ramifications extend far into the future. The conflict has also contributed to re-escalating the geopolitical spectre of old Cold War tension. Moreover, what must be prioritised, at all costs, is the humanitarian crisis: millions of Ukrainian people have been killed, injured, and expatriated. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 Secondly, what is equally as repulsively abhorrent as the Russian invasion of Ukraine — and indeed equally as important — is the humanitarian crisis within Gaza. The world, for far too long, has bore witness to the most atrocious human rights violations, extreme acts of dehumanising violence, and the complete genocide of the Palestinian people. We must act now; the serious consequences of failing to act will compromise the legitimacy of our elected representatives, international organisations, and world governments. 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸 Lastly, the existential threat to all biological life on planet Earth posed by climate change is increasing. The technological advancements of late-stage capitalism’s fourth industrial revolution (4IR) are coextensively coinciding with the Anthropocene’s sixth mass extinction giving rise to unprecedented times. Rosi Braidotti calls this phenomenon ‘the post-human convergence’; a term that intends to portray a polarised image of the emerging contemporary world dominated by both dystopian and utopian aspects. 🌇
