As a dietitian turned fifth-generation farmer, I believe in healthy food, ethical farming and a better food system. I realised as a dietitian that it no longer made sense to be recommending healthy eating if there weren’t enough farmers producing healthy food. After moving home to Brisbane, it was also difficult to access food that we wanted to eat. As a farmer’s daughter and with a little help from our wise friend hindsight, I realised a few years ago that a seed had been planted and was slowly growing roots. I decided to work out how to nurture it. I choose to be a farmer: 🌱 Because I believe there is no work more valuable and meaningful than producing healthful and delicious food, 🌱 To provide farmed animals a life that they deserve, 🌱 To regenerate the land that we farm on, and 🌱 To reconnect consumers with growers in a localised food system. People choosing to buy food directly from ethical, regenerative, small-scale growers has an enormous impact - on the lives of small farming families, on the tastebuds and health of our eaters, on the lives of animals that we care for, and on the land that we help to heal. Sharing my method of making veggie beds without any chemicals or pesticides, all natural processes! . 🪵 Dry twigs, branches go at the bottom making up 10% of the container volume. For smaller pots, use coconut husks, broken earthenware. 🍂 Dry leaves come next, making up 25% of the container volume. 🥗 kitchen scraps like veggie offcuts, stalks of green leafy vegetables, peels, rotten fruits etc go next. I chop them up to aid faster decomposition. I do not add cooked/leftover food or boiled tea powder or some such. This layer is 15% of the container volume. 🐄 Cowdung manure covers the scraps as a thin layer making 10% of the container’s volume approx. 💩 Good quality brown/red soil is spread evenly on top making 25% of the container volume. 🍂 Lastly fill the remaining 15% with another layer of brown leaves! . The prep is complete!! To turn this layered mass into good quality compost, spay water on it everyday. Alternate a spray of diluted buttermilk and jivamrut every week and let nature do the rest! . The beds will be ready in 2-3 weeks depending on the climate. You can plant your favourite seeds, saplings in them and watch your chemical free, residue free, totally natural produce go from farm to table😀😀 . . Wars have been fought over this little wispy white cloud!😀 . Had sown a couple of cotton seeds given to me by my maid (she knew her crazy employer would sow anything on a whim😂😂). Didn’t know when to plant, how much to water or manure it but just went ahead on gut instinct. One seedling grew up healthy so transplanted it to our compost pit. . In peak summer beautiful fresh yellow flowers opened up their faces to the morning sun. The wilted flowers at the end of the day were even prettier 😀😀, a light pinkish maroon shade!! Soon bulbous green structures began forming when the flowers fell away. The structures ballooned up every day till one day, last week, white fuzz started peeping out of the criss crosses at the top of the pods.😀😀 . Another couple of days and the pods had split wide open to reveal white segments full of cotton 😀😀🤩🤩🤩 . Here’s what we got done around the farm this Saturday: 1. Cleaned out the chicken coop 🐓 🥚 💩 2. Assembled the frame for the Chicken Tractor using @richardperkins.co designs 3. Checked on our orchard and cut the grass around the trees 🌸 4 & 5. Weeded our radish and carrot beds in the green house and discovered some pretty pink radishes 🌱 💖 6. We have received a lot of questions on how long will dried flowers last and it's a difficult question to answer because it really depends on the environment they are kept in and how they are treated. Dried flowers can last for years sometimes however it can really depend on a number of factors such as; - what type of flower it is, some dried flowers last longer than others - how much humidity is in your home, dried flowers like it dry - how much sunlight they are exposed to, sunlight will fade the colours and deteriorate the flowers quicker It is much the same as fresh flowers which can have a widely varied vase life depending on how they are treated. I see some people put their fresh flowers in a really hot location such as near a fireplace and not change the water. Their flowers are not going to last any where near as long as flowers placed in a cool dark location with fresh water everyday. I hope that helps a little with all of the questions surrounding the longevity of dried flowers. Basically if you look after them they can be enjoyed for a very long time. The Apr ‘24 edition of @rooting.for.nature, my nature column for @deccanherald, published last Sunday. The column features one of a clutch of what I call ‘kookie callers’ of #NaviluKaadu — birds with bizarre calls. This is the first in a multi-part series on the winged ones with weird calls, that startle us and spook us by turns, on the farm. For the April edition, I wrote about the enigmatic Indian nightjar, a crepuscular bird, that likes to keep time, and starts calling at around 7 pm each day. This edition is extra special. Among the usual reader e-mails, was one from 11-year-old Nishad, responding to my reader prompt to guess the bird that would feature in the upcoming May column. Nishad even included the scientific name of the bird he guessed! ❤️ I have no words. This just makes the beautiful, yet arduous pursuit of stewarding and preserving wild, untamable Navilu Kaadu, worth our while, as a family. . Had you ever heard of white jamuns!??😀😀 I hadn’t ever😛😛 . When we first started terrace gardening, we had visited a nursery for saplings and the man in charge there had insisted that we buy the white jamun. It was a pretty expensive risk to take but we thought if it really did give WHITE Jamuns eventually then it would totally be worth it, so the tiny sapling came home♥️ It was a scrawny sprawler with branches shooting out radially and so we had to keep it solitary. Without much expectations, we went about composting, manuring and watering it just like the rest and in Jan this year (after about 10-11 months since we got it), buds appeared😀🤌🤌🤌 We were awed by what followed next! To witness fruition upclose was a blessing! The buds burst into tiny, hairy, golden flowers within a month and plumped up to greeness in another couple of months. The young jamuns looked like overfilled water balloons 😀😀 We weren’t sure about the maturation period but since it was called the white jamun, we decided to wait till they were white in colour😜😜 . Surprisingly one morning, early this month, we found a gnawed jamun hanging on to the twig😜😜! As usual the early bird had indeed got the worm😂😂 . The same story continued for the following couple of days with us waking up to gnawed, half eaten fruits😅 . We decided to cover up the remaining fruits with cloth till they ripen. And so finally we were able to taste this great unknown fruit😀😀 Its a bit tart but I guess that’s coz we didn’t allow it to ripen fully on the tree for fear of the birds eating them!! Yes, that’s exactly what I am saying!!🤣🤣 I am still excited even after an year of gardening when something that I so lovingly and apprehensively plant, grows to full size and starts fruiting and completes the cycle!🤌🤌 . Our brinjal journey was a sad one littered with failed attempts to either see the seeds sprouting or seeing them sprout only to witness an untimely death of the young sapling🫣 I played the blame game all too well! So once it was the poor quality seeds, another time it was too little manure, then another death was blamed on overwatering!!😜😜 . Finally, when I had almost given up on seeing brinjals ever in my garden, a tiny cluster of them sprouted in my coriander patch in Sept!! There were 6-7 of them. I hand watered them and waited till they were 4-5 leaf old to gingerly separate them and replant in separate containers 😥The next couple of weeks were nerve racking coz the little ones refused to look up but I persisted with care and finally on 25th Jan a tiny new leaf/bud appeared at the apex of the eldest sapling🥳🥳🥳🥳 That day I knew I had made progress and went about confidently watering, manuring, composting their pots!! Was thrilled with the first beautiful little lavender flower with yellow pollen sacs on open up in March!! . And now we have harvested 3 of these pretty, light green, rounded native brinjals from our garden💃💃💃 . This is probably the last of the Dahlias that will be picked this year. Whilst the Dahlia rows look stunning and colourful from a distance, up close they are tired, blown out and wind damaged. They will now be given time to rest and fall into their winter slumber when they will then be dug up, divided and stored indoors for next season. Do you have to dig your Dahlias in Australia? This giant dinner plate Dahlia was so large and top heavy I had to cut her stem down really short and prop her up in a bud vase, kind of worked but also found the vase toppled over a few times.
