🏰👷♂️ Big news from Castell Coch! 👷♂️🏰 Phase one of our scaffold structure has begun on the well tower by our esteemed partners, @lt_scaffold_services_, on behalf of the main contractor, John Weaver Conservation, and the client, @cadwcymruwales. For those not in the know, Castell Coch is a stunning 19th-century Gothic Revival castle perched above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. We were tasked with providing detailed designs for an access scaffold to enable restoration works to the existing stone and mortar joints. And here’s the kicker: our scaffold will be sheeted with a laser print of the castle itself. So, from a distance, it’ll be like nothing’s changed – you won’t even know it’s there! I’ve moved on to Swansea Wales and on the way stopped off at two different castles. The first one was Castell Coch, located a few miles outside of Cardiff. Built in the 1100s and then rebuilt in 1870 after it fell into ruin. It’s small and cozy bc the family who rebuilt it were 2 people who loved each other deeply, the 3rd Marquess of Bute and his wife Gwen. If you look in her room you will see the heart over the hearth signifying their love for each other. They loved animals so you see animals decorated all over as well. There is no chapel in the Castell although one was built and then it was taken out and no one knows why! I love a good mystery! On our last full day in England in April, we woke up tired from the adventures and ready for the journey home; but Ash knew my heart needed one last stop before we left. I had wanted to spend a couple of days in Wales, exploring the country my grandfather was from but as trips always go, time ran out and it would have to wait until next time (story of my life lol.) We made a run for the Welsh border and spent the day in #Cardiff, where I could feel my grandparents with me everywhere I went 💗 We went to the pier and saw the ocean before driving up to Castell Coch, first built in 1081 and where I have vague memories of souvenirs around my Nana and Poppa’s home. (I recall reading it on something over and over in my mind and just never figuring out how to pronounce it- typical Welsh 🙈) As we drove around the corner at the bottom of the hill, I stopped dead in my tracks to see The Lewis Arms Pub, somewhere I swear I have seen a photo of my grandfather standing in front of (or perhaps it’s just my imagination, knowing that if there wasn’t proof, he was still most certainly there 😂🍻) We walked around Tintern Abbey, first built in 1131 with absolute awe with the most perfect Welsh drizzle and clouds in the air. (I will say this, if there is ever an apocalypse- I definitely plan to hide out in these mystic Welsh woodlands 🌳💚🌳) Wales certainly has a place in my heart, and I hope to go back to see more of it someday. In the meantime, I’ll be thinking back to days when Poppa would spell Welsh words and towns for me and speak the language to my amazement, and how honored I felt when he once told me he saw Welsh in me.
