👻Carissimi lettori, vi porto su questi schermi una recente collaborazione che non ha fatto altro che aumentare, nel giro di pochissimi giorni, la mia crescente ossessione e interesse per il buon maestro Lovecraft.👻 Ma quanto io abbia già affrontato in tempi passati molte letture delle sue opere, quanto adesso sento proprio il bisogno di approfondire e scendere nel dettaglio di quegli autori che al tempo hanno generato in lui molta ammirazione e curiosità. 👁️Tra questi c'è senza alcun dubbio Arthur Machen, lo scrittore de Il grande dio Pan, testo che ho amato per sottigliezza e misteriosa suspence, dalle vicende dispiegate come un velo sottile sugli occhi di ogni miscredente. Non nego il mio ritrovato amore per quel passato pagano e dimenticato che si risveglia negli incubi più sordidi di ogni protagonista di sorta. Ma tornando a noi, è bene nominare anche gli altri autori e autrici che formano questa chicca de “La biblioteca di Lovecraft 2”, secondo dedicato al maestro e alle sue aspirazioni come per l'appunto Arthur Macher, Ralph Adams Cram, Francis M. Crawford e Henrietta D. Everett. 👁️ Ogni racconto riportato nel volume ha una magia a sé, perfetta e immutabile per le costanti sensazioni che riportano inesorabilmente a quella sorta di incubo che ci rende ceci di fronte alla paura. E la paura, infatti, sembra proprio ciò che rende comuni tra loro questi racconti, accompagnati dalle sfuggenti illustrazioni di Diana Gallese, incise con tratto marcato e insieme fuggevole come le infestazioni di un brutto sogno o un ricordo che si vuole a tutti i costi dimenticare. 👁️I racconti sono quattro e direi ben assortiti tra loro, troviamo “La valle Morta” di Adams Cram, racconto che più tra tutti ricorda il fascino ancestrale dei versi di Blackwood per quella natura incontaminata che ha un sistema tutto suo, ma che nasconde nel più nascosto recesso qualcosa, dalla notte dei tempi, di malvagio e inestirpabile. 👁️Poi ancora “La polvere bianca” di Machen che mi ha ricordato moltissimo “L'aria fredda” di Lovecraft, che trova la sua composizione in una sostanza bianca in polvere di sconosciuta provenienza. ... 👻 Recentemente, ho concluso la lettura del grande Dio Pan di Arthur Machen, che da tanto mi intrigava e incuriosiva per le sue atmosfere oniriche e inquietanti. 👻Infatti è proprio per le atmosfere e la particolarità del tema che mi sono spinta alla lettura di questo testo, unico e probabilmente cardine di altri nel suo genere. Lo stesso Lovecraft ne affermava la validità, soprattutto in merito alla ripresa degli antichi culti popolari sulle divinità primordiali. 👁️ “Machen è un titano —forse il più grande autore vivente — e io devo leggere ogni cosa sua” (lettera a Frank Belknap Long, 3 giugno 1923) e “Persino tra i più eminenti (autori), il vero tocco della paura sublime e delirante è terribilmente difficile da trovare. Arthur Machen è il solo maestro vivente, — nel pieno senso della parola — che io possa nominare in questo campo”. 👁️“Dei creatori viventi di terrore cosmico elevato al picco d’arte più alto, pochi se alcuno possono sperare di eguagliare il versatile Arthur Machen, autore di qualche dozzina di racconti lunghi e brevi, nei quali gli elementi di orrore celato e profondo terrore raggiungono un’essenza quasi incomparabile e realistica acutezza. Il signor Machen, è un uomo di lettere completo e un maestro di prosa squisitamente lirica ed espressiva”. 👁️ Machen parte sin da subito stabilendo il grande e demoniaco dio Pan nella tranquilla campagna inglese, cittadina moderna di una civiltà industrializzata, prossima alla massificazione. Ci confida ,quasi, i suoi ricordi d'infanzia, gallese di nascita, per colline selvagge, foreste arcaiche e misteriose, raccogliendo una ricchezza mistica che rasenta l'ideale, generando nel lettore quanto più di vicino c'è nel sogno e nell'incubo. Infatti, accostandosi alla sua lettura, non si può non notare quel profondo baratro che quelle colline sconosciute conservano, quello sconosciuto ancestrale che quei boschi celano alla vista. Riti antichi che sarebbe meglio non nominare neanche e ricordi che sarebbe meglio dimenticare. 👁️Abbiamo vari protagonisti e narratori del mistero, ma personaggio centrale, circondato dagli intrecci più perversi, è sicuramente la progenie del Dio. ... Besides Arthur Machen's classic Great God Pan (1894), this handsome OUP @oxunipress volume contains many weird adventures by amateur gentleman occultists Mr Dyson, Mr Philipps, and company. Filled with unspeakable evil, mystic symbols, old pagan gods worshipping, and the always reliable coincidence to keep a story moving, or conclude it. Sometimes I feel like if Dyson and Phillips just kept running aimlessly around London long enough, every case would solve itself. But that's like saying it doesn't matter if Indiana Jones is there or not, the Nazis would have opened the Ark anyway... It doesn't matter, and it doesn't make these stories any less fun.

I’ve been looking to acquire this little book for a while now and finally found this copy at a reasonable price.. “ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴏᴡᴍᴇɴ ᴀɴᴅ ᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ʟᴇɢᴇɴᴅs ᴏғ ᴡᴀʀ” by ᴀʀᴛʜᴜʀ ᴍᴀᴄʜᴇɴ. In September of 1914, Arthur Machen published a short story called “The Bowmen” in The Evening News. It was partially inspired by true reports he had read about the Battle of Mons, which he then combined with his own idea to create a tale of supernatural fiction. The basis of the story being the summoning of a spectral company of archers from the Battle of Agincourt, during the Battle of Mons in WWI, by a British soldier after he made a plea to St. George. The phantom archers intervened in the battle and with their longbows, decimated the German enemy 🏹 The story was not described as fiction and soon gripped the heart of the British public. Even the church was taken by Machen’s story and told him that he must be mistaken when he tried to denounce it as a work of fiction. It grew arms and legs with everyone, from spiritualists to spies.. it proved an afterlife to some whilst acting as morale boosting wartime propaganda to others. It is perhaps either the earliest example of an urban legend (coming many years before the term was coined), or early fake news due to the factual reporting style of the article. As well as this tale, the book contains three others, also of a supernatural nature.. The Moonstrance, The Soldier’s Rest and The Dazzling Light. This book also holds the distinction of previously belonging to the library of renowned bibliophile, book collector and Arthur Machen expert, the late Malcolm Henderson and includes his ex-libris sticker tipped in. I would like to add at this point that I loveeee Arthur Machen, he always seems to balance between stories that take place in London and stories that take place in the english countryside. He manages to combine urban mysteries and horror with the rural tragedies and dark pagan remnants of the past. This is the third time I read Machen's works and it felt as fresh as the first time, the only story that I don't really like (although it's considered on of his best) is "The White People" the style is so different in this one, ugh I don't get it... All in all, Machen is one of the best that weird fiction has to offer, try to find any of his works and dive into it! The order wholeheartedly approves!!! So have you read Machen? A visit to Caerleon, Wales. This is one of the places said to be the seat of King Arthur's Camelot. It has the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre and troop bunkers, dating back to before Wales existed and was the inspirtation for Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Caeleon is also the birthplace of authour and spiritualist Arthur Machen, who inspired Stephen King! I have put a couple of his horror books on my TBR list. A small place but lots of character and history, an enjoyable and inspiring day out . La recensione: È bello ogni tanto tornare alla letteratura gotica, e a quei romanzi horror ottocenteschi così sinistri e ingegnosi. “I tre impostori” è davvero un libro intelligente, che svela i suoi misteri con lentezza, e lascia che il lettore trovi da sé i collegamenti fra i vari pezzi del puzzle che gli vengono forniti. È divertente ragionare sulle vicende incredibili contenute in questo romanzo, cercando di mettere insieme gli indizi, traendo conclusioni. Arthur Machen, poi, è molto abile nello scrivere storie spaventose che allargano la mente del lettore, instillando il dubbio che forse il mondo è molto più inquietante e inspiegabile di quanto possiamo capire. Lo consiglio decisamente ai fan dell’horror, perché è intrigante e molto efficace. Anche se la prosa può risultare un po’ pesante all’inizio, in realtà ci si abitua alla svelta perché è elegante e avvincente, specie nelle scene di tensione. Da evitare se: Se non vi piace l’horror, o se avete voglia di una storia semplice e lineare.
