Recharge, Refocus, Repeat: Building Resilience in a Dynamic Workplace Work is a dynamic landscape. You may find it’s super satisfying one minute, then it throws you a curveball the next. Here are a few insights I’ve gathered over the years. Keep them in mind as you navigate this adventurous journey:   1. You’re not a robot or a machine. Even machines need downtime to avoid overheating. Take breaks, recharge, and come back stronger.   2. Prioritize ruthlessly. Ten things can’t ALL be top priority. Be realistic about what can be achieved and focus on those key tasks. Delegate, negotiate, and communicate about the remainder.   3. Perfection is a myth. We’re all human—imperfect people in an imperfect world. Let go of the expectation of perfect performance from yourself and others. Let go of the need to control everything. Instead, be patient with yourself and others, and focus on what you can influence.   4. Your worth isn’t on a spreadsheet. Don’t confuse your title, salary, or performance reviews with your value as a person. That’s priceless and never up for discussion.   5. Treat yourself with kindness. You talk to your friends with respect, right? Extend that same courtesy to yourself. You deserve it.   Life’s a journey, and in the workplace (as in life), the twists and turns can come fast. You can’t control everything, but you can determine your approach. Take it in stride, focus on what you can control—your internal environment—and create a space where you can do your best work, no matter what comes your way.   What helps you stay grounded and focused when the work world gets hectic? Hezekiah sought the lord, worked with all his heart, and he prospered. We may sometimes find it easy to seek the lord and work with all our hearts when the work we are doing directly ties to ministry. However we, at The Christian Work Institute, believe seeking the lord and working with all our hearts in our 9-5 will also allow us to thrive at work and ultimately prosper. In bringing God into the center of our work reflect on 2 questions: 1. Have you sought the lord as it relates to your work? This can be asking God for direction on your career path or simply asking him how to complete a task. God is wonderful, powerful, and all knowing. He cares about you and your work experience. He wants us to thrive at work. 2. Do you perform your work heartedly? According to Colossians 23, as Christians we should always perform any work task or work with all our heart as working for the Lord. This includes the big or little tasks you may perform in your 9-5. Hate your work and find yourself slacking off? Seek the lord! Ask the lord to help you see the value you bring to your workplace. Ask the lord to help you find joy in your workplace as well as to give you wisdom to excel and be a positive contributor to your employer. The support you receive will depend on your needs, it can help with practical support such as costs with travelling or specialist equipment. Ask your employees what YOU should stop doing! Ask them to give you an appraisal, and regularly. I have always asked my team, and my peers, what I should stop, start, and continue to do. Early feedback I received stuck with me and I worked hard to fix things. Once I was told that while they knew I was super busy when they came to talk to me I was always distracted by my Laptop or phone. They knew it was work, & they knew I valued them, but it was still an annoyance and impacted trust. While this particular issue has never been entirely eradicated I have worked hard to be as present as I possibly can in all conversations. Another time I was told by an employee how they always felt valued & trusted, and how that had a big impact on their motivation. Knowing they could give honest and direct feedback left them inspired to do more. This feedback has always been invaluable and has shaped my leadership in a way that feedback from my manager has rarely done. Do you ask your team, peers, and leaders, what you could change? Setting boundaries is hard. Did you know that today (20 March) is #InternationalDayOfHappiness? What better way to spend it than delivering a session to the brilliant leadership team at Optimised. It was a kick-off session for their Thriving Together programme which I’m going to be leading them through over the next few months - I can’t wait to get stuck in!
