Did you know it’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day? 🌍 🔑 It’s key to remember that accessibility isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution as it can impact everyone differently, we are all human after all! When I talk about embracing accessibility, I speak about three fundamental pillars: emotional, functional, and technical. 💡 🧠 Emotional Accessibility reminds us everyone should feel included and valued. It’s about cultivating an environment where people feel understood and respected. ♿︎ Functional Accessibility means we need to make sure all our tools and environments are designed to meet diverse needs. Whether it’s in physical spaces or digital platforms, functional accessibility ensures that everyone can navigate, participate, and contribute without barriers. 🚫 🖥️ Technical Accessibility highlights websites, applications, and all digital content must be accessible to all, including those with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities. 👂 Please use Global Accessibility Awareness Day to reflect on how you can make your workplace and community more inclusive. 🤝 #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay #InclusionMatters #AccessibleWorkplace #HRLeaders

“I attended an Inclusive in a Day workshop with Jo this month and it was incredible what I managed to get done in the time we had together. I’ve come away with a really good understanding of how to continually work on being a more inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. Together we wrote a really personal inclusion statement and accessibility statement to share on my website to show potential clients what my intentions are. We also worked on an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy for my business. I would 100% recommend working with Jo to start building your inclusive culture! 💛” Jodie. Sound good? Let’s talk about: Accessibility This is the next Pillar of Inclusion that we teach about. It’s amazing how many people still muddle up inclusion and accessibility. So just to be clear and make sure we’re on the same page: inclusion is how someone feels and accessibility is how we make it happen. Because many of our businesses work in a hybrid of online and face-to-face nowadays it’s really important to address both these factors when it comes to accessibility. As someone who’s been doing this work for years, I love nothing more than getting stuck into consultancy and really nailing how this works for services and events. You can create quick wins in your business by “ticking off” your accessibility. So much of it, particularly for online work is super duper simple to implement; like captions, transcripts, alt text and work with graphics! Did you know we have created SENStory Accessibility Checklists for both online and face-to-face services to help you get it right! And right now our Accessibility Bundle is only £47! Grab yours today and make your biz more accessible! Here’s our next Pillar of Inclusion… Systems and Processes! We love that you’re talking the talk about inclusion - it’s a start. However, if your talk isn’t underpinned by action taking it’s pretty meaningless. #sorrynotsorry Whether it’s looking at the onboarding and offboarding processes you have in place, the questions you ask or the information you share; systems and processes are key to embedding inclusion into your business strategy. They are the best way of making inclusion part of the ‘norm’ for your organisation and ensuring you don’t miss anything vital. Systems & processes keep everything running smoothly! We talk a lot about the importance of giving opportunities for feedback, taking time to do proper evaluations and continually making improvements. Our clients love the simplicity that the SENStory framework uses to bring inclusive systems and processes in to capture information, meet everyone’s needs and actually walk the walk! Sound like something you need support with? This is our jam!! Our next Pillar of Inclusion is: Knowledge 🧠 It’s vital that we develop our knowledge about inclusion! This builds your confidence when it comes to language, communication, messaging, as well as how you can support those who work with you. I highly recommend building your knowledge from a place of lived experience; Connecting with people from diverse backgrounds, marginalised and minority groups is an essential part of building knowledge. When we hear from real people who’ve experienced barriers and challenges, we create more inclusive spaces because we’re connecting on an emotional level with these experiences. We can use those stories and that knowledge to create change. How can you invest in training and connections that will build knowledge for you and your team around inclusion? Who can you invite (and pay!) to speak at your next event? How can you develop your team’s knowledge of inclusion? We can help! People with disabilities often face barriers in the search for fulfilling careers. Disability is frequently stigmatized, and many job descriptions pose issues to people with disabilities. For example, many positions require that the employee can lift x pounds or can commute to work every day. Luckily, advocacy organizations have contributed to a growing job market for the disabled community. Additionally, the pandemic has led to an increase in remote work opportunities. While remote work is a great opportunity for many, it may not be suitable for all individuals with disabilities. Employers should prioritize greater accessibility and offer more accommodations. In the meantime, people with disabilities should ask questions, demand change, and show employers how they can successfully fulfill a role. No matter who you are, searching for a job comes with rejection, but rejection should not hinder success. Everybody has preferences for how they perform best in working environments. Assistive technology helps make performing in work environments easier for those with neuromuscular conditions and other physical disabilities. Inclusive of screen readers, lifts and moving stairs, sensor-based switches and extendable reaching devices, assistive technology suits different needs and purposes. Adaptations to software, hardware, workspace adaptations and vehicle modifications can also make working easier, more comfortable and more accessible. The Employment Assistance Fund provides financial assistance if a workplace needs to make modifications and services to make it more accessible. Today marks #WorldHearingDay! A day to raise awareness and push for more inclusion and accessibility for our Deaf and hard of hearing friends and colleagues. Every single person deserves the chance to feel like they belong and are accepted in this world – regardless of their hearing abilities. So with that in mind, have you thought about what can you and your team can do to cultivate a more inclusive workspace? To guide you, here are few tips for communicating with people who are Deaf or hard of hearing: ✅ Do: Ensure you're facing them and maintaining eye contact. Lip reading can massively aid in understanding conversations. ❌ Don’t: Mumble or speak softly, particularly in noisy settings. Background noise can severely hinder comprehension for those with hearing challenges. ✅ Do: Communicate clearly at a normal pace. ❌ Don't: Overly slow down or speed up your speech. Shouting isn't helpful either. ✅ Do: Opt for meetings in smaller, quieter spaces with fewer participants and good lighting. ❌ Don’t: Place them in challenging auditory environments like conference calls or large, dispersed group meetings. ✅ Do: Use body language. These cues add crucial context missing from spoken words. ❌ Don't: Ignore the power of non-verbal communication. ✅ Do: Try rephrasing or offering a different word, if misunderstanding occurs. ❌ Don’t: Keep repeating the same misunderstood word. ✅ Do: Engage directly by asking what was not understood and try an alternative explanation. ❌ Don’t: Say "never mind" or brush off the importance of what you were trying to say. ✅ Do: Proactively ask for feedback on how to enhance communication ❌ Don't: Remain indifferent or resist learning new ways to communicate effectively. 👉 Share this post to spread the ripples of inclusivity far and wide! #InclusionMatters #AccessibilityForAll #DeafAwareness #HardOfHearing #InclusiveCommunication #SignLanguage #HearingLossAwareness #EqualOpportunities #DiversityAndInclusion #AccessibleWorkplace #HappyMindTraining #CorporateTrainer #DeanKaden #TrainingTips #WorkplaceTraining

Today is World Hearing Day, which is all about understanding the impact hearing loss can have on those living with it, while also taking steps to promote ear health and care. We think it's important to make all spaces accessible to everyone, which is why we thought we'd share some ways to ensure people with hearing loss thrive in the workplace. ⭐ Use assistive technologies such as hearing loop systems, soundless alarms, and captioning services. This will ensure all employees understand information, while also assisting those who may not realise they have hearing loss and those who are not open about their disability. ⭐ Consider communication training. This will raise awareness about the challenges faced by those with hearing loss, while teaching staff the importance of facing people when speaking, using gestures, and avoiding unnecessary background noise. ⭐ Be inclusive. This could mean designating quiet spaces for important conversations, providing written instructions alongside spoken communication, and sharing meeting agendas in advance. Remember – accommodations made for people with a disability have the potential to positively affect all members of a workforce. There's our top three suggestions, but we know there are many different ways to ensure the workplace is accessible for everyone. Do you have any favourite tips or tricks? [Image description: Under the words 'World Hearing Day' there is a young girl proudly showing off her hearing aids. There are points about hearing loss to the right of the image. The points are: 80% of ear care needs are unmet; prejudice and misconceptions continue to limit efforts to address hearing loss; and let’s work together to break down stereotypes and create a world accessible to everyone.] #worldhearingday #accessibleworkplace #disabilityservices #hearingloss #accessibility

Accessibility is key. While things need to be more than just a wheelchair button, the fact that my school gets these things done so quickly to address these issues means so much! They are awesome at shovelling and there are more of these buttons at my work than I can think of in recent memory.! #accessibleworkplace #wheelchair #accessibility

Initiating a conversation with your supervisor about ADA compliance is an essential step toward creating an inclusive and accessible work environment. Start by scheduling a meeting to discuss your concerns and the specific accommodations you require to perform your job effectively. Approach the conversation with confidence and clarity, emphasizing the importance of ADA compliance in fostering a supportive workplace for all employees. Provide relevant information about your disability and how certain accommodations can help mitigate barriers to your success. Collaborate with your supervisor to develop a plan that aligns with ADA guidelines and meets your individual needs. Remember, advocating for your rights under the ADA is not only your prerogative but also a crucial step toward creating a more inclusive workplace for others. #ADACompliance #InclusionMatters #AccessibleWorkplace

📚Last week, I shared that my most recent blog post which talks you through a dream scenario for the recruitment and initial orientation process for an autistic candidate. If you haven’t had a chance to read the blog yet, I’ve summarised this scenario here. I wrote this blog to inspire recruiters, HR managers and employers at large to consider what a potential dream recruitment scenario could look like for an autistic person. I’ve written it because I find that many employers seemingly expect workplace adjustments to be complicated and cumbersome, when the reality is that it’s often the small, considered and thoughtful gestures that make all the difference. As always, it’s important to remember that each individual autistic person is different and therefore our needs are individual, so this is really just one example. 🔗 To read more about successfully recruiting autistic staff, please head to my blog through my page’s bio. In 2021, President Biden's executive order titled "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce" initiated a government-wide initiative to make the federal workforce a model of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for the nation. 💼 🇺🇸 In 2024, federal agencies in the United States are still held accountable to these orders to protect those in the American workforce who are often marginalized or face unjust obstacles for employment. Do you know what this is? At NMC Design+Print, we're not just designers… We’re also part of Team NMC, and operate right at the heart of the NeuroMuscular Centre. This means, we are committed to enriching the lives of people with neuromuscular conditions by creating employment opportunities in our design department, and by supporting the Centre with any profits made. But, we’re not just part of the charity, most of the team use its services too. In fact, regular physiotherapy helps the members of our team with neuromuscular conditions stay fitter and healthier for longer, and more able to focus on the job. So when they asked us to help them with a photo shoot, we were delighted to be able to give back. So what's in the picture below? It's a piece of equipment to help maintain strength and dexterity in people's hands, which is very handy when you're a designer! The delightful gentleman pictured explained that it's quite hard work (for him) and said he'd rather be lifting weights, which was his next task in NMC’s fully accessible gym! #TeamNMC #NeuroMuscularConditions #Physiotherapy #GiveBack #LoveWhereYouWork #WhatWeDo #AccessibleWorkplace #Design #Graphics #Charity #socent

📚In my latest blog post, I create a dream scenario for the entire recruitment process for an autistic candidate, from job description to interviews to first day. 🗃️ In the second half of my blog about successfully recruiting Autistic Staff, I go deeper into talking about job interviews. There’s a great deal to be said around the topic of job interviews, and in this blog, I have touched on a few aspects that I know personally make a great difference to me. Though as usual, please bear in mind that every autistic candidate will be different, and it’s about getting to know each person and finding out what accommodations could work for them. Remember that the onus shouldn’t always be placed on the autistic person to figure this out, and that a collaboration goes a long way. Trust me on that point! 🔗 To read more about successfully recruiting autistic staff, please head to my blog through my page's bio. @woolworths_au has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first retailer to introduce an accessible checkout for people living with a physical disability. Upon realising the absence of suitable checkout options in store for people with physical disabilities, Woolworths took proactive steps to find a solution. Collaborating with the Centre for Inclusive Design, they embarked on a journey of innovation, creating several prototypes. This image captures the poignant moment of Johnson Chen, who proudly became the first team member to use this groundbreaking checkout on his first shift at the Kellyville Grove store. Woolworths has made another great step towards fostering a work environment that embraces diversity and accessibility. We can't wait to see what's next in creating more accessible environments.
