In Live Nourished, Shana Spence starts by exposing diet culture for what it is: a patriarchal, capitalist mindset that is engrained in countless aspects of our society, and that keeps us from living healthily and joyfully. It’s a systemic belief that equates fitness, health, and thinness with worth and assigns food a moral value. And it’s a belief that pervades our society. Spence’s arguments will open your eyes to the insidiousness of this mindset, which coopts the way that we speak, we eat, we move, and live our lives. Through a takedown of diet culture in all its forms, Spence explains why diets don’t work, and provides you with the courage and the knowledge needed to prioritize nourishing the body and soul. To get there, Spence walks you through healing your relationship with food. Touching on concepts like intuitive eating and health at any size, Live Nourished provides you with a roadmap towards eating, moving, and living in a way that works for you. Spence’s thesis is simple: If we can learn to separate ourselves and our worth from diet culture, we can learn how to eat when we’re hungry, meet our body’s unique needs, and discover which foods give us pleasure—all while nourishing our bodies and souls in the process. Reading Between the Wines book review #31/130 for 2024: Rating: 3 ½ 🍷 🍷 🍷 Book: Daughter of Mine Author: Megan Miranda Available now! Sipping thoughts: So many secrets and lies leads Hazel Sharp to adulthood discoveries that shaped her childhood. Once Hazel returns home after a tragedy, she finds out that some of her childhood was a lie. I liked the dynamic of the relationships in this story as you had no idea who to believe. It was not my favorite of Megan Miranda but the mystery is why I gave it the rating I did. https://amzn.to/3vW321v (Kindle) https://amzn.to/3UboqHW (Audiobook) https://amzn.to/3w68GxX (Hardcover) From two New York Times bestselling authors, a timely, disarmingly honest, and thought-provoking investigation into antisemitism that connects the dots between the tropes and hatred of the past to our current complicated moment. For Emmanuel Acho and Noa Tishby no question about Jews is off-limits. They go there. They cover Jews and money. Jews and power. Jews and privilege. Jews and white privilege. The Black and Jewish struggle. Emmanuel asks, Did Jews kill Jesus? To which Noa responds, “Why are Jewish people history’s favorite scapegoat?” They unpack Judaism itself: Is it a religion, culture, a peoplehood, or a race? And: Are you antisemitic if you’re anti-Zionist? The questions—and answers—might make you squirm, but together, they explain the tropes, stereotypes, and catalysts of antisemitism in America today. The topics are complicated and Acho and Tishby bring vastly different perspectives. Tishby is an outspoken Israeli American. Acho is a mild-mannered son of a Nigerian American pastor. But they share a superpower: an uncanny ability to make complicated ideas easy to understand so anyone can follow the straight line from the past to our immediate moment—and then see around corners. Acho and Tishby are united by the core belief that hatred toward one group is never isolated: if you see the smoke of bigotry in one place, expect that we will all be in the fire. Informative and accessible, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew has a unique structure: Acho asks questions and Tishby answers them with deeply personal, historical, and political responses. This book will enable anyone to explain—and identify—what Jewish hatred looks like. It is a much-needed lexicon for this fraught moment in Jewish history. As Acho says, “Proximity breeds care and distance breeds fear.” Release: 4/30/24 #UncomfortableConversationswithaJew #EmmanuelAcho #NoaTishby #SocialScience #Activism #SocialJustice #SimonElement #SimonandSchuster #newrelease

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Element for an ARC of The Night We Lost Him. Oof, I hate leaving all bad reviews but I really did not enjoy this book in any way. My first issue was the incredibly slow pace of the story...I figured at some point the pace would pick up but it stayed slow even through the ending. My second issue was the main character's relationship was pretty much just a romanticism of his adultery throughout 3 marriages. It seemed like the author wanted me to be swept away by this unconventional love story but it just left me with an "ick" feeling. 1.5 stars, generously rounded up #arcreader #bookstagram #fictionbooks #netgalley #simonelement #thenightwelosthim

One for home and the other for the library! Happy publication day to one of the most important conversations captured within a book. Thank you @noatishby & @emmanuelacho for being willing to have uncomfortable conversations with each other, online, in-person and on these pages. We need to find ways of having conversations that built empathy, understanding and a sense of a shared humanity. There are ways of facing even our opponents with curiosity and wonder as @valariekaur taught me several years ago in her book See No Stranger. I also highly recommend listening to the @mother_tongue_magazine podcast episode with @moj @sharonbrous & @osopepatrisse . Find where these kinds of conversations are happening and listen and learn how to participate. I am learning to ask myself, am I unsafe or uncomfortable? Let’s get comfortable with uncomfortable conversations. There is a better way! I’m reading this book before I go to bed and as soon as I wake up, along with the Shema❤️ this is the kind of conversations we need to be teaching beginning in kindergarten and globally. May this book be a pivotal moment in history. My review copy of @noatishby & @emmanuelacho ‘s #uncomfortableconversationswithajew just arrived today from @_simonelement . I have been following this conversation between Tishby and Acho since Oct. 7, 2023. This is one of the most important books to read right now and a model of communication that is desperately needed. I am so grateful for these two for demonstrating that you can have uncomfortable conversations, not agree on everything and yet have compassion and see the humanity in each others perspective and lived experience. I hope this book creates pivots on college campuses and shifts violent protests to conversations. I am opening the book and looking forward to listening and being changed by what I hear. ✨Available Now✨ Her father was the town detective. Her mother its most notorious criminal. Now the secrets of Mirror Lake are coming to the surface - and changing everything. This is an excellent mystery with lots of potential suspects and an ending that I didn’t see coming. The protagonist, Hazel, is a reliable narrator and I felt like I was unraveling the secrets right along with her. The beginning buildup is a slower pace setting everything into place, but stick with it because once it takes off you won’t be able to stop reading. I have been waiting for a perfectly creepy thriller for some time! Miranda has hit it out of the park with this almost gothic story filled with claustrophobic elements and questionable family characters. When Hazel Sharp's father dies, she begrudgingly returns to the town of MIrror Lake. She is one of three children of the scion of local police but her mother famously left her father and took all of their money on her way out. Hazel needs to face town and family who still blame her for the deeds of her mother long ago. Following the will reading and a surprise finding in the lake, Hazel is determined to find out what really happened to her mother. What I loved about this book aside from the absolutely creepy moments was that Megan Miranda positioned Hazel's childhood memories perfectly. I could truly picture her (and me!) at the lake as a child. This is by far the best thriller I have read all year - Pick it up! #Simonelement #Marysuericci #Daughterofmine #MeganMiranda

✨HAPPY PUB DAY✨ Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda I love a small town family drama, especially when there is a lot of mystery and suspense. Hazel’s father passes unexpectedly. He was the chief of police and her brothers are surprised that he has left his home to her. Both her mother and the chief’s first wife (mother of his two sons) both left under mysterious circumstances. She returns home, for the first time in years, to help clean out the house and decide what to do. Her brothers aren’t thrilled with the situation, especially the younger one. A car is found in the water behind the home Hazel inherits, which unleashes more questions than answers. I found myself not knowing who to believe, and there were some twists I didn’t expect. Everyone is keeping secrets and they all suspects each other. This storyline had so many layers and such a complex family. Kept me guessing right up to the end! Many thanks to @netgalley and @_simonelement for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Many thanks to @msrucci.editor @_simonelement @simonbooks for gifting me a physical ARC of the latest thriller by @meganlmiranda - 5 🌟! Hazel Sharp has made a new life for herself, away from Mirror Lake. One of three children of the local police detective, she comes back after his death. She’s shocked to learn that her father left her their family home, excluding her brothers. But that’s not the only surprise. The region is experiencing a drought, and the lake soon uncovers two submerged vehicles. Will the mystery surrounding why Hazel’s mother left years ago finally be solved? This was a fabulous thriller - I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Told in 4 parts - Father, Mother, Daughter, Sons - the story is played out in short chapters. The family dynamics are spot on, with sibling rivalry on full display. Everyone seems to be holding secrets and is a potential suspect, and the creepiness factor is high with people missing, home invasions, and remote wooded locations. I loved the ending - this is a must read! Plus, I loved the storm cloud graphics starting each chapter - just more creepiness! ☕️Coffee & Currently Reading☕️ Happy Monday Friends! I’m currently reading A Better World by Sarah Langan. It’s reminding me of The Walking Dead when they all got to Alexandria and the world around them was falling. It’s a slow burn story that’s giving me an uneasy feeling waiting for the other show to drop. It’s not quite post apocalyptic, but the world is not doing so good and these “company towns” are a promise for a future to people who are struggling, but the Farmer-Bowen family is finding life here hard to adjust to and hard to fit in. It’s really interesting. This weekend was our first t-ball practice and Opening Day so we were quite busy. Looking forward to some down time this week and also starting my buddy read of Daughter of Mine (@_simonelement ) with @howhollyreads! Both of these books are releasing tomorrow. Thanks to @atriabooks and @_simonelement for my copies of these ARCs. Thank you Megan Miranda, NetGalley, Simon Element, S&S and Marysue Rucci Books for my copy of Daughter of Mine 🤍 I received this book for review, all opinions are my own and given freely. No romance this time! What! 🫣 I enjoy to dabble in thriller suspense on the side and I love Megan Miranda. I’ve read many of her books and love her writing style. She has a way of drawing her readers in and making every character seem suspicious. The entirety of this book, I was skeptical about every single character. I never once thought I had it figured out. I just love that about a thriller book! The twist at the end was great. I couldn’t read fast enough to figure out what was going to happen next. Pub date is 04/09/2024! 🎉 When Hazel inherits her father’s home after his death it opens up years of secrets and deceits. She has to muddle through everything and try to piece together what truly happened years ago when her mother allegedly abandoned her. #daughterofmine #meganmiranda #thriller #suspense #smalltownmystery #netgalley #simonandschuster #simonelement #marysueruccibooks #arc #arcreader #bookstagram #bibliolater #goodreads #readersofinstagram #bookworm #bookish #booksofinstagram @meganlmiranda @netgalley @simonandschuster @_simonelement @marysueruccibooks

Recipe #6 from Cooking in Real Life by Lidey Heuck: Hummingbird Pancakes with Caramelized Pineapple and Pecans (topped with fresh whipped cream). I don’t think I can make regular pancakes any more. So easy and so delicious! The pancakes have bananas in them, and it adds so much to the flavor and the texture. Next time, I will have to make a double batch because there are no leftovers 😢 #cookbookreview #netgalley #cookinginreallife #lideyheuck #simonelement #pancakes #hummingbirdpancakes #pineapple #breakfastforsupper #breakfast #brunch

Recipes #4 and 5 from Cooking in Real Life by Lidey Heuck: Salmon with Honey & Chili Crunch and Warm Herbed Farro. This was my first time trying out chili crisp. I purchased the Laoganma brand. I tried it out of the jar, and it didn’t have a ton of flavor, but mixed with the honey (I used extra honey) and rice wine vinegar, it was pretty tasty on the salmon. Plus, it was a 4 ingredient recipe! I love farro so I’m always excited to try out a recipe for it. I soaked my farro for about 30-45 min before cooking it. It was delicious and went nicely with the salmon. #cookbookreview #salmon #chilicrisp #laoganma #cookinginreallife #lideyheuck #netgalley #simonelement #farro

Recipe #2 Baked Crab Dip with Sweet Corn and Old Bay from Cooking in Real Life by Lidey Heuck. This was so good!! I’m glad I made a double batch because we probably ate half of it. I have it pictured on a piece of @fallsbaking French boule (which was delicious) but it was also amazing (don’t judge me) on a buttery Town House cracker. Or just on a spoon. Absolutely will make this again and can’t wait to make it for the next time I need to bring an app to pass. #cookbookreview #cookinginreallife #lideyheuck #simonelement #crabdip #appetizers #appetizer #snack #townhousecrackers

Recipe #1 Orecchiette with White Bolognese from Cooking in Real Life by Lidey Heuck. Loaded with veggies, fresh ground pork from Premier Meats (local to me), pancetta, white wine, heavy cream, topped with Italian parsley, basil, and freshly grated Asiago. I served with with sliced French bread from my local bakery, @fallsbaking . This was so flavorful and a huge hit with the fam! It’s spring but we’re snowed in, and this was perfect for the juxtaposition of the weather/season. Note: I used conchiglie pasta as it was the closest I could find in my small town. I also substituted dried basil for the fennel as I am not a fennel fan. I would absolutely make this again. Thank you to @netgalley and @_simonelement for the ARC! Review spoiler: I already ordered the cookbook as I adore the couple of recipes I have tried so far. #cookbookreview #cookinginreallife #lideyheuck #netgalley #simonelement #supper #dinner #bolognese #whitebolognese #pasta #sauce

👩‍👧Book Review👩‍👧 Thank you @_simonelement @marysueruccibooks @simonandschuster @simon.audio for my #gifted ARC and ALC 🚗Daughter of Mine • Megan Miranda @meganlmiranda ⏰Available • April 9th, 2024 • @marysueruccibooks Daughter of Mine is an atmospheric, small town thriller set in Mirror Lake, North Carolina during a prolific draught. Hazel is back in town attending her father’s funeral when news comes that a vehicle has been found in the lake near a sharp turn in the winding road. Her father’s will reading adds to the mysteries and to the strain on her relationships with her brothers. While cleaning out her father’s home, Hazel stumbles upon clues that could explain her mother’s disappearance years earlier. Told in 4 parts, the tension builds slowly as you wait for rain and when it finally arrives, the dam breaks revealing a break neck paced twisty conclusion. I switched between the audio and physical and you can’t go wrong either way. If you’re a fan of Miranda’s other books be sure to grab this one, you won’t be disappointed! 👩‍👧QOTD • Do you have a favorite lake to visit? Mine is Norris Lake in Tennessee. “What about the families of the girls he killed? Do we even know their names? Or anything about them?’ ‘Of course we don’t. Meanwhile, how many movies do we already have about HIM?” ⭐REVIEW⭐ 4⭐s “Bright Young Women is told through the eyes of Ted Bundy’s victims—a perspective that’s been effectively ignored… The book is 376 pages, and Knoll doesn’t write the words “Ted Bundy” one single time.”—excerpt from review by Jezebel “[This story] imagines how the survivors of the sorority-house attack & another of Bundy’s earlier crimes (when he killed two women in Washington) went on after the attack, as well as their search for closure, & what it cost them.” –Vanity Fair This book wasn’t what I’d expected. This story is meant to be “told through the eyes of Bundy’s victims.” (see above 👆) Because of this, I thought the characters would be based on actual IRL victims. But the main characters are all fictional. I mean, how can you write a story honoring the victims without writing about the victims??! However, the story does live up to its other promises. Knoll takes a red pen to the inaccurate history we’ve been taught, slashing through each & every lie. Like how women supposedly fell victim because they were blinded by Bundy’s charm & good looks? Not quite. “He was your run-of-the-mill incel (161).” She reveals that the man who murdered 35 women and “had groupies and the NYTimes on his side (35)” was a law school reject who “picked up a heroin habit (312)” in prison. And she illuminates the way “law enforcement backed up his self-purported claims of brilliance to cover up their own incompetence (161).” If people believed Bundy was a diabolical genius, it provided an excuse for the prisons allowing him to escape…twice. Bright Young Women allows us to walk us in the footsteps of both Bundy’s victims & their friends, and to experience the misogyny & incompetence that led to their senseless loss, as well as their helpless rage at both the system that failed them and the media that turned their killer into a CELEBRITY. Thanks for reading! 😘 ⭐Qs: Last/Current/Next? ✨I’ll be out of town next week, so I’ll be taking a break until the 18th.  I’ll miss you! ❤️✨

Unbecoming A Lady Cover illustrations by Lisa Jonté Cover design and art direction by Patrick Sullivan Slut. Shrew. Sinful. Scold. The 19th- and early 20th-century American women profiled in this collection were called all these names and worse when they were alive. And that’s just fine. These glorious dames earned those monikers, and one hundred years later they can wear them proudly! They refused to conform to societal standards. They bucked everyday niceties and blazed their own trails. They were collectively unbecoming as women, but they forever changed what women can become. With irresistible charm and laugh-out-loud impertinence, New York Times bestselling author Therese Oneill chronicles the lives of eighteen unbecoming ladies whose audacity, courage, and sheer disdain for lady-like expectations left them out of so many history books. With dozens of illustrations and historical photographs throughout, Unbecoming a Lady shines a light on unforgettable, impressive women who deserve to be remembered. 🌟𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜𝗢𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪🌟 I knew nothing about the Japanese invasion of Malaya during World War II so I learned a lot reading 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗠 𝗪𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗗𝗘. Told in dual timelines before and during the war, the novel revolves around the Alcantara family and how matriarch Cecily’s choices impact those she loves. It’s not an easy book to read but @vanjchan’s writing makes it hard to put down. She shares her personal connection to the story in the author’s note at the beginning and it’s interesting to see how the details she learned from her own grandmother are integrated throughout. I’m not surprised this was a GMA book club pick - it’s a truly impressive debut and the audiobook is beautifully narrated by @samanthatanofficial. • BOOK REVIEW • Thank you so much @netgalley and #simonelement for my gifted copy! If you've been here a while, you may know about my love/hate for Megan Miranda's books. I'm happy to report this one is worth the read. Yes, the ending was rushed and predictable, but I found myself highly entertained and on the edge of my seat for a majority of this book! I wasn't as interested in the mystery surrounding Hazel's mom (that was too predictable for me), but another character goes missing, and I was fully invested in trying to figure that out. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 Pub date: April 9, 2024 SYNOPSIS ⬇️ When Hazel Sharp, daughter of Mirror Lake’s longtime local detective, unexpectedly inherits her childhood home, she’s warily drawn back to the town—and people—she left behind almost a decade earlier. But Hazel’s not the only relic of the past to return: a drought has descended on the region, and as the water level in the lake drops, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge…including evidence that may help finally explain the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. ⁉️ What are you reading this week?

Many thanks to @_simonelement @msrucci.editor for gifting me an ARC of this memoir by Genevieve Kingston - I’m so anxious to read it! The synopsis: Genevieve (Gwen) Kingston’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer when Gwen was just three years old. Defying the odds, she lived another eight years—during which time she filled a chest with gifts and letters to Gwen and her brother, Jamie, for every major milestone and birthday through age thirty. The day Gwen got her driver’s license. The day she graduated from high school. Gwen is now in her thirties and, when Did I Ever Tell You? begins, three unopened boxes remain: engagement, marriage, and first baby. Two decades after her passing, Gwen’s mother’s extraordinary efforts created a lifelong conversation beyond the grave. It’s getting fabulous early praise so put this one on your radar for sure! 🍳Basics with Babish • Andrew Rea @bingingwithbabish ⏰Available Now • @_simonelement Thank you @bookclubfavorites for my #gifted copy Our families love language has always been food. My son introduced me to Babish through YouTube videos, we’ve been watching him and recreating his recipes for years. Yesterday was my husband’s birthday and I fully intended to film myself making a recipe but I burned my finger and gave up filming pretty quickly. Luckily the dinner came out perfect, can’t go wrong with lemon caper Salmon over risotto with sautéed spinach! I especially love this cookbook because he breaks down everything in a relatable and informative way. Each recipe starts with how he’s screwed the recipe up, then gives scenarios of what could happen and explains why so you can avoid that mistake in the future. I’m looking forward to making all the things from this cook book, especially the lobster rolls! Swipe to check out some of the beautiful food from the book👉🏽 🍳QOTD • Are you a picky eater? I am not. Many thanks to @netgalley @_simonelement @simonbooks @marysueruccibooks for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful debut historical fiction novel by @vanjchan - 4.5 🌟! Set in Malaya (now Malaysia) during the years 1936-1945, we meet Cecily, her husband Gordon, and their 3 children - Jujube, Abel, and Jasmine. In the early years, Cecily meets a man she becomes enthralled with, who is actually General Fuijwara of the Japanese army, who plays into her desire for a more exciting life by offering her a chance to help restore Malaya back to Asian occupancy instead of British. Cecily becomes a spy, secreting information she gathers from Gordon’s administrative job and getting it to Fuijwara. Ten years later, Cecily sees the damage done by helping the Japanese. Abel is now in a prison camp, Jasmine has to be put into the basement with her hair cut off to protect her, and Jujube takes on responsibility and guilt she shouldn’t have to. When I learn something I didn’t know before from reading a historical fiction book, it’s a win. And this book opened up my eyes to situations I had never heard about. How sad that a country wants out of one oppressive ruler only to find itself in even worse conditions. Cecily thought she was doing good but was taken advantage of and ended up betraying her family and country. There are a lot of tough subjects to read about in this book, but Chan’s writing makes you keep turning the pages. Her prose is atmospheric - you can picture the deplorable conditions, feel the pain of these characters. Will be anxious to read her next book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Hazel Sharp has come back to Mirror Lake, the one place she vowed to leave behind and in her past. Not only does Hazel have to manage the loss of her father, the small town’s longtime detective but also try to understand why she was left the family home and not her brothers. As the days stretch on a drought in the surrounding lake is now revealing its once hidden secrets. Two cars are pulled from the now shallow muddy depths, one of which being found right in Hazel’s backyard. These unidentified vehicles bring forth memories Hazel would rather forget and questions like why her mother abruptly left all those years ago and where could she be. Could this all be somehow connected? Hazel may have been away for years but she’s back now, determined and desperate to uncover the truth at all costs. This is my third Megan Miranda read and I have to say this one is by far my favorite! Daughter of Mine is an exhilarating thriller set in a small town where everyone knows each others secrets, or at least they think they do. I absolutely inhaled this book finishing it in one day, I just could not put it down until I knew how it was all going to unfold. Throughout reading I kept going back and forth trying to decipher who was our “big bad”, and while I had suspicions of where the plot was going I still enjoyed the overall twist reveal. I definitely recommend reading at night as I found this really enhanced the overall atmospheric feel of this book as many of the creepier scenes take place under the cover of darkness. If you are looking for a book that will instantly suck you in with question after question then look no further! Daughter of Mine comes out April 9th,2024. Thank you @netgalley and @_simonelement for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. And of course thank you @meganlmiranda for writing such a great thriller! #daughterofmine #netgalley #netgalleyreview #simonelement #winterreads #thriller #2024reading

Speaking of…2023 TOP TEN! What was the most unexpected read you stumbled upon this year?? It was Sharkheart for me. When @_simonelement sent me a copy, I was hesitate. I mean a guy turns into a shark & it’s a romance?? But I gave it a shot & it’s made it into my 2023 TOP TEN. Shark Heart was an unexpected joy to read. Regardless of how odd the synopsis makes this story sound, it’s beautifully written. These is so much love, heartbreak, and longing in these pages and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for something imaginative and lovingly written. Happy Monday everyone! For those of you looking for some last minute gift ideas, cookbooks are my go to item I love to buy, and receive as well. TASTING HISTORY by Max Miller is unique because it gives you the background info on many classic dishes and the recipe is included as well. On the 9th Day of ARCmas, AOTM Book Club gave to me… Two winners of a highly anticipated thriller coming out April 9, 2024! [Giveaway Closed] Thanks to Simon Element / Marysue Rucci Books for partnering with us for this giveaway! Hazel Sharp is the only daughter of longtime Mirror Lake Detective Perry Holt. When he passes away, she inherits his house, returning to the town she chose to leave behind long ago. As the water level of the Lake drops, what’s hidden beneath is slowly revealed… and someone doesn’t want the secrets to come out. Megan Miranda wrote a completely atmospheric thriller with Daughter of Mine. It’s moody and unsettling, and really picks up in the second half of the book. I love when a moment like a phone call makes me sit straight up and pick up the pace when I’m reading! I really enjoyed following Hazel’s POV and thought using different family relationships as Part names was such a clever way to structure the book. If you’re into disappearances, estranged siblings, small town murder mysteries, or wondering if someone’s watching you, you’ll definitely want to pick this book up! 🚨G I V E A W A Y T E R M S: 1. 1000 WORDS Jacket Design and Art Direction by Patrick Sullivan Lettering by Jacq Francois Simon Element In 2018, novelist Jami Attenberg, faced with a looming deadline, needed writing inspiration. Using a bootcamp model, she and a friend set out to write one thousand words daily for two weeks straight. They opened this practice to Attenberg’s online community and soon hundreds then thousands of people started using the #1000WordsofSummer hashtag to track their work and support one another. What began as a simple challenge between two friends has become a literary movement—write 1,000 words per day without judgment, or bias, or concerns about writer’s block, and see what comes of it. 1000 Words is the book-length extension of this movement. It is about becoming—and staying—motivated, discovering yourself and your creative desires, and approaching your craft from a new direction. It features advice from more than fifty well-known writers, including New York Times bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize winners, and stars of the literary world. Framing these letters are words of wisdom and encouragement, plus specific strategies, from Attenberg on how to carve out a creative path for yourself all year round. Paired with vibrant word art illustrations, 1000 Words is an accessible and motivational craft book that allows you to open any page and get a quick and fulfilling hit of inspiration. Book Review A Journal for Bad Days: Self-Care Strategies to Get Present When Things Aren’t Perfect By: Eveline Helmink with Hilary Sheinbaum Sometimes I can be really inflexible. Don’t tell my spouse that I admitted it to you, but I know it’s true. I crave order and the crazier my life gets, the more rigid I become. It’s not always a bad thing—it helps me be successful at my job and it aids me in running this house with three kids and a nutty dog—but I know things cannot always go according to plan. Alas, just because I know this, doesn’t mean I don’t get cold sweats, heart palpitations, mild diarrhea, and a case of the shouties when they don’t. This self-help journal contains 60 writing prompts for reflection in categories such as “The Big Bad World Out There” and “F*ck What Mentally Strong People Do”. There’s advice for social media detoxing (I’m failing) and using art and creation as stress management (better…). The book itself is sassy and wise and small and portable, and maybe just what I need to begin my journey away from anxiety and towards acceptance. Fingers crossed!🤞 Thank you @bookclubfavorites for this gifted copy! ❓Do you keep a journal? How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis Yall, this was such a great read. If you feel like you’re drowning in housework, cleaning, and organization this book is absolutely for you. It’s so fun and realistic and hilarious. I love the rainbow organization - it’s so aesthetically pleasing. The idea of getting rid of things that don’t bring you joy seems like a great idea - it’s just not practical for me. This book gives you practical, easy to follow tips to help you get a handle on your “care tasks” and does it in the absolute most readable, easy-to-digest way. I got this one as a library book, but I may also have to get a physical copy to keep. The chapters are short, important parts are bolded, and if you want to speed through it, she has shortcuts laid out for you. I absolutely recommend this book. i so enjoyed it, and I think you will too. PS — I just found out her Instagram handle is “strugglecare.” I love her that much more now. TELL ME THE DREAM AGAIN by Tasha Jun 🇰🇷 Growing up as a biracial, this is a memoir of Tasha Jun - caught between not being American or Korean enough, and her deep reflections on identity and belonging. I am not biracial or Korean, however I am of Asian descent. Jun's words echoed on me as we connected over our shared experiences - of otherness; of the importance of family legacy as we see stories passed down from our parents and later, our own effort to do the same; of our way of expressing love by feeding each other; of wholeheartedly embracing our Asianness. While her ethnicity and cultural identity would turn people away, it's definitely our source of bond. The author encompasses many facets of love - mainly interweaving the divine love with mother's love, their shared essence offering touching moments. Our struggles mirror each other and I could see glimpses of myself. With captivating writing, Jun tenderly examines grief that crosses borders and time while also deepens my empathy about intergenerational trauma ('han'). Throughout the book, she smartly exposes the journey of God's hand on cultural redemption and identity. It was vulnerable and didn't sound 'preachy'. Full of brokenness, this book is about family, color blindness, Christianity and embracing our stories. It made me feel at home and I found it precious. MADE IN TAIWAN | 台灣製造 by Clarissa Wei with Ivy Chen 🇹🇼 Taiwanese cuisine is my comfort food. This book is an expansive volume that makes me wholly embrace my Taiwanese heritage. Visually stunning and extensively researched, this book highlights, beyond mouth-watering recipes, stories of Taiwan and what food is like in this green island. I appreciated Wei's essays and the culinary history. It's no surprise that I loved this book and I highly recommend it for those wanting to know more about Taiwanese history and cuisine. ▶️ swipe to see some Taiwanese food that I have been craving: Scallion pancakes (蔥油餅) and Fried crullers (油條) • note: both are perfect for #nonfictionnovember ~ { thank you to @_simonelement and @tyndalehouse for the #gifted copy. ✨️Book Review ✨️ 📖 Bright Young Women By: Jessica Knoll Pub Date:  October 13, 2023 Pages:  384 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Swipe ➡️ for description Thank you @netgalley and @_simonelement, for the #gifted earc of this book! This was a fictional retelling of the last murders that Ted Bundy committed at Florida State University in 1978.  What I liked most was that it put the focus on the victims and the people who knew them. The author never once mentioned Bundy's name in this book. He is known only as "the defendant."  While hard to read at times, I think it helped to understand the grief and fear that the in real life girls at the Chi Omega sorority house experienced on the night of the murder and days to come. The author did a great job researching this book. There were some facts that I had to look up as I had not heard of them before. This is a book that will stay with me for a long time. Basics with Babish: Recipes for Screwing Up, Trying Again, and HItting It Out of the Park (A Cookbook) by Andrew Rea US pub date - 10/24/23 . . My husband introduced our teens and me to Binging with Babish on youtube a few years ago and this cookbook definitely encompasses the author’s charm and humor. . I'm going to go so far as to write that these are basics, elevated. This isn't a negative, by any means. It's the difference between something that tastes good to something that tastes great. This is a great how-to / cookbook for anyone who wants to learn how to cook - my teens have been cooking and baking for a few years and they found this book very informative. . There’s a lot in here. The chapters are below, but this list doesn’t encompass the spices, pantry ingredients, cookware and accessories, etc. that the author has added. Chapter 1 - Bread Chapter 2 - Pizza Chapter 3 - Pasta Chapter 4 - Eggs Chapter 5 - Vegetables / Side Dishes Chapter 6 - Seafood Chapter 7 - Poultry Chapter 8 - Pork Chapter 9 - Beef Chapter 10 - Desserts . **Note - There's a lot of dairy and meat - from raw prep on. If you’ve watched the youtube channel, you know, but if not this one isn't going to work for most vegetarians, nevermind vegans. . . . Thank you to S&S/Simon Element and NetGalley for the DRC! #BasicswithBabish #AndrewRea #SimonElement #NetGalley #cookbook #notforvegans #arc #arcreview #cookbookreview #bookblogger #October2023books https://bit.ly/3SiI9WZ

THE WITCHING YEAR Jacket design and art direction by Patrick Sullivan Simon Element 🕯️ Diana Helmuth is skeptical of organized religion. She is also skeptical of disorganized religion. But, more than anything, she is tired of God being dead. So, she decides to try on the fastest growing, self-directed faith in America: Witchcraft. Witches today are often presented as confident and finished, proud and powerful. Diana is eager to join them. She wants to follow all the rules, memorize all the incantations, and read all the liturgy. But there’s one glaring problem: no Witch can agree on what the right rules, liturgy, and incantations are. As with life, Diana will have to define the craft for herself, looking past the fashionable and figuring out how to define the real. Along the way, she travels to Salem and Edinburgh (two very Crafty hubs) and attends a week-long (clothing optional) Witch camp in Northern California. Whether she’s trying to perform a full moon ritual on a cardboard box, summon an ancient demon with scotch tape and a kitchen trivet, or just trying to become a calmer, happier person, her biggest question remains: Will any of this really work? The Witching Year follows in the footsteps of celebrated memoirs by journalists like A.J. Jacobs, Mary Roach, and Caitlin Doughty, who knit humor and reportage together in search of something worth believing. 🕯️ LINK IN BIO @patchnavillus @definitely_not_lost @_simonelement

Book Review: The Hive and the Honey, Paul Yoon I can’t resist a reading experience that introduces me to a time or aspects of a culture that expand my understanding. I had high hopes for The Hive and the Honey, and it did not disappoint. Paul Yoon’s new release is a brilliant collection of seven memorable stories exploring 400 years of the Korean diaspora. The collection chronicles themes of displacement, home, identity, belonging, as well as the clash of cultures across borders and centuries. I felt compassion for the humanity of these characters and wanted to know them more deeply. At times, I found myself pausing to research the maps and the evolving history of Korea. I look forward to reading more of Yoon’s oeuvre. I highly recommend reading The Hive and the Honey if you favor subtle character sketches that will broaden your understanding of the unique experiences of the Korean diaspora. My sincerest thanks to @ _SimonElement and @NetGalley for the privilege of reading this digital ARC. A one-of-a-kind recipe chronicle of Dale Gray’s life in the south—from South Africa to South Korea to the American South. South of Somewhere is a unique culinary tour of beloved food blogger Dale Gray’s life to date. Her journey goes way back to South Africa on the outskirts of Cape Town. Dale grew up with a close-knit family who has resided in her hometown for generations, but it’s almost impossible to encapsulate her heritage in a few words. She describes the people of South Africa as a product of centuries of colonization, enslavement, apartheid, and intermarriage between people from Asia, Africa, and Europe—now compromising a colorful blend of Eastern, Western, and African heritage. After growing up in South Africa, Dale taught English for six years in South Korea, and she later moved to the American South where she resides now with her husband. The result of her travels is a one-of-a-kind cookbook with dishes including Porch Party Shrimp with Mississippi Comeback Sauce, Salmon Ssam Feast, and Garlic Peri-Peri Roast Chicken. Dale Gray is best known for creating delicious dinner recipes for her blog and Instagram that look as good as they taste, but this book delves far deeper into her story and food with delicious creations like these and more which you’ll return to time and time again. https://amzn.to/45pqsYo (Kindle) https://amzn.to/3RRZeGV (Audiobook) https://amzn.to/46M7KM1 (Hardcover) A profound and gripping memoir by Nicole Walters, the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants who became a self-made multi-millionaire by showing others how to recognize their own strengths—and her own harrowing journey to the discovery that she was worthy all along of the life of her dreams. Nothing Is Missing is a riveting, unputdownable story of what it takes to show up for yourself—and the joy that can come once you do. Raised in a home where food was unstable and anger was the norm, Nicole learned early that she needed to take charge of her own safety and security. So she did: She got into an elite private school by talking to a stranger in her dad’s cab, she strategized her way onto Wheel of Fortune to pay for college, she adopted three girls after meeting their mother panhandling, she quit her job to launch her own business, and she struggled. Hustling endlessly to try to achieve society’s definition of success left her exhausted, compromising her own sense of worth in order to accommodate others. Nicole worked herself straight into a health crisis that threatened her life and the family she had worked so hard to build. It was not until she was forced into a major reckoning in both her business and her marriage that Nicole realized that she was already enough, that she had and was everything that she needed. In Nothing Is Missing, Nicole contemplates how she was able to create the life she wanted using the strength she had within herself all along. Review: SHARK HEART by Emily Habeck “How were your flights?” They ask. In all honesty, I don’t remember the flights at all. I started this fabulous and immersive book in Louisiana and didn’t come up for air until I landed in Maine. I hate flying, but the story made me forget everything except Lewis, Wren, and their tragic love story. “A few weeks after their wedding, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis. He will retain most of his consciousness, memories, and intellect, but his physical body will gradually turn into a great white shark. As Lewis develops the features and impulses of one of the most predatory creatures in the ocean, his complicated artist’s heart struggles to make peace with his unfulfilled dreams. A sweeping love story that is at once lyrical and funny, airy and visceral, Shark Heart is an unforgettable, gorgeous novel about life’s perennial questions, the fragility of memories, finding joy amidst grief, and creating a meaningful life.” (GoodReads) Some parts are poetry, others a screenplay, and we move back and forth in time and POV, but it all flows together beautifully. Perfectly. Swimmingly. It was witty, tragic, lovely, heart-wrenching, and wholly original. I can’t praise Habeck’s writing enough. The lyrical, engaging, and descriptive writing! Thank you, NetGalley and Simon Element, S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books, for the Digital Review Copy. QOTD: I couldn’t pick a backdrop photo so you get both. Which do you like better? Many thanks to @netgalley @simonbooks @_simonelement @marysueruccibooks for gifting me a digital ARC of the wonderful new book by @jessicaknollauthor - 5 🌟! In January 1978, Pamela Schumacher, president of her sorority at Florida State University, is startled awake in the early morning by a noise and chooses to investigate. She catches a look at a man fleeing the house, first thinking he is one of her sister's boyfriends. The horror soon sets in that the man brutally murdered two of the sisters and injured another before fleeing. Pamela is soon thrust into the investigation which will last for decades. On the other side of the country, Tina has been tracking the man she believes killed her girlfriend, Ruth. When she hears about the slayings in Florida, she travels there to meet with Pamela. They meet up with an investigative reporter, Carl, who as a man has access they don't. This is a fictionalized story of the Ted Bundy murders, known only as The Defendant in this book. The focus of the story is on the bright young women in his path instead of on him, which I loved. It portrays him as average, instead of the smart, good looking man portrayed in the media. The story is told from both Pamela's and Tina's POV, in different timelines presented in such a creative way. Hard to read because you know it's based on facts, but I couldn't put this one down - highly recommended! Publication date 9.19.2023 - available now! #BrightYoungWomen #JessicaKnoll #SimonBooks #SimonElement #MarysueRucciBooks #NetGalley #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #Books #BookRecommendation #BookLover #BookReview #BookReviewer #TBR #MustRead #Read #Fiction #TrueCrime #TedBundy

Soon to be a Netflix adaptation!! It's the late 1970's and Pamela is the president of her Florida Sorority. Choosing to stay in on a Saturday night she awakens to a terrible scene that will haunt her forever. After the event she struggles to have other listen to her, really listen to what she saw and who. A sign of the times, the name of the book refers to the Ted Bundy case in which the judge referred to him as a "Bright Young Man." In this story, we follow multiple story lines and viewpoints including Pamela as well as a woman named Ruth. Both are impacted greatly by a woman named Tina who hasn't stopped trying to bring justice to the death of her friend. If you love serial killer novels, murder mysteries and thrillers this is a book that will actually keep you up all night! #SimonElement #S&S #MarysueRucciBooks #BrightYoungWomen #JessicaKnoll

“Snow White meets Eyes Wide Shut in this surreal descent into the dark side of beauty.” Happy Weekend friends! I’m starting my weekend off with ROUGE by @misss_read. I loved Bunny and I have been hearing the buzz all over about ROUGE. When the publisher reached out about it all they had to say was “horror tinted, gothic fairytale”! I mean how can you resist those buzzwords? I’m diving in shortly. Have about 50 pages left in my current read and should be done tonight so I can start this one. A coworker also picked it up so I am trying to read while she is too for an impromptu book club she didn’t ask for. 😬 I first heard of Mona Awad from their book BUNNY. I saw it but wasn’t sure if it would be for me. I saw Samantha Downing buying it during the pandemic and I am nothing if not a sucker for being influenced. I bought it too. I also thought it was my sole job during the beginning of the pandemic to keep bookstores in business. All the books were purchased. Many of them just by telling me someone else got it too. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 As I mentioned above, I am hearing and seeing this book everywhere with rave reviews. @scaredstraightreads loved it, @barnesandnoble has an episode of their POURED OVER pod about it. So two of my go to sources recommended it I think that means you guys need to pick it up too. Let me know if you do. What are you reading this weekend? I want to say Thank You to @_simonelement and @bookclubfavorites for the gifted book. I will drop the synopsis in the comments for you to checkout.
