2024年第15本書「1984」 大名鼎鼎的喬治.歐威爾（George Orwell)，還沒看他的「動物農莊」，先選了「1984」，這本文學家評論死前必讀小說，覺得震撼。 讓我想起赫胥黎的「美麗新世界」，同樣是反烏托邦小說，「新世界」是科幻多於政治，而「1984」則是政治多於科幻，也因此更有真實感，也更驚悚。 說驚悚真的不為過，故事描繪執政者操控人民的思想的極致與變態程度，讓人懷疑真有這個國家、這些思想警察的存在。現在很多人可能把「老大哥」影射老共或其他無所不用其極監控人民的國家，以此來對比自由民主的珍貴，我卻覺得這樣解讀過於政治，也太低估這本書反烏托邦的用意。 它赤裸裸的批判掌權者為了永久執政，可以改變歷史，可以創造永遠征服不完的敵人，可以讓人民心甘情願地相信2+2=5，可以同時聰明又愚蠢，遇到無法解釋的事情就自動雙重思考…..這些是全世界執政者都在做的事，對人民的思想教育不只極權國家在做，民主國家亦是。 高層想永久執政、中階永遠在尋找取代高層的機會，而廣大人民不過是被利用做為權力鬥爭的工具，這是政治運作的規則，赤裸但真實，喬治歐威爾在1940年代就看清了。 大推！ #georgeorwell #nineteeneightyfour

If you like a dystopian novel, The Disappeared by Amy Lord is a must-read. The heavy influence of 1984 is overtly referenced to throughout the book which I really appreciated. It’s got a great plot and Lord’s writing is incredibly easy to read and follow. The different perspectives worked perfectly with the telling of the story and I loved the fact that there was no announcement of whose perspective a chapter was from and you had to just work it out as you read. I sometimes find in dystopian novels that there can be a bit of waffle about the ‘regime’ and the history, to fill in the blanks from before the book is set, but Amy Lord avoided that beautifully - she gives a bit of information and context when required and doesn’t over-explain but also sometimes leaves some blanks where they don’t affect the story and that was refreshing! The only way in which this fell short for me is actually a bit of a compliment to the book really - it’s that I wanted more. Mainly I wanted more character development because it sometimes felt like the main characters did things that I felt were a bit of of character but at the same time I didn’t feel like I really knew them that well at all. This then meant that some of the things that happened (no spoilers here!) didn’t hit me as hard as they definitely would have if I’d felt a bit more involved in the characters. A few extra chapters probably would have done it! It’s worth noting that whilst I very much enjoy a dystopian story, it’s not my go-to choice, so where I felt things were missing, your seasoned dystopia-reader would probably completely disagree. And all that said, I actually couldn’t put this book down and I will definitely be checking out what Amy Lord releases next. Very grateful to @srlpublishing for the free ARC, which I throughly enjoyed and will be purchasing a trophy copy of in September when it comes out on paperback 😂 The hardcover with the STUNNING cover pictured on my kindle is out now 🩷

This workshop is based on the book and film Nineteen Eighty-Four and the event discussion topic of dystopia, which implores us to consider: just how close are we to Orwell’s vision — or are we already there? Francesca will encourage you to use your creative powers to resist Big Brother. Resistance has many faces, and in times of creeping dystopia, creativity can be a firm stance against oppression. Join this workshop to learn how to connect through spoken word poetry and make a nonsense of doublespeak by playing with language and improvisational story-telling techniques. The workshop aims to include participants of diverse ability and experience. Francesca Beard is an internationally acclaimed spoken word artist who makes interactive and transformational work for live audiences. She has over twenty years’ experience facilitating projects with a wide range of diverse communities, for organisations such as Apples and Snakes, Arvon, All Change Arts, B3 Media, the BBC, The Barbican, The British Council and The Young Vic. George Orwell "1984" (1949) Do "Roku 1984" Orwella powróciłem po ponad dwóch latach. Wtedy, na fali moich uczuć i rozmyślań związanych z ówczesną polityczną sytuacją naszego kraju, bardzo do mnie ta książka trafiła. Ze zgrozą zauważyłem wtedy, że coraz bliżej nam jest do opisywanych w niej realiów. Teraz czytało mi się tę powieść z nieco większym dystansem. Rozpatrzałem ją w kategorii podobieństwa już nie do Polski, ale do typowo totalitarnych państw, takich jak komunistyczne ZSRR czy Korea Północna. Książka ma już ponad 70 lat, ale, niestety, Orwell miałby o czym pisać i dziś, i nie musiałby się wysilać na tworzenie fikcyjnej rzeczywistości. Wszystko, co opisał w "1984", zdążyło się już spełnić. Cholernie godne podziwu, jak przewidział tendencje totalitarnych państw i kierunek, ku któremu podążały. Główny bohater przekonuje się, że w systemie, w którym dane mu przyszło żyć, nie można ufać nikomu. Nawet dzieci potrafią donieść lokalnym władzom na swoich własnych rodziców. Każdy miły człowiek może okazać się agentem Policji Myśli. Jakakolwiek próba nawiązania z kimkolwiek kontaktu, by zacząć działania przeciwko władzy jest więc bardzo ryzykowna. Winston zbiera się na odwagę, nie zdaje sobie sprawy jednak z tego, jak straszne będą konsekwencje jego działań. A pokój 101 czeka. I z chęcią przyjmie kolejnych ludzi, by oczyścić ich z myślozbrodni. "1984" to jedna z lektur, które uważam za obowiązkowe do przeczytania przez każdego. Absolutny must read. Czytajcie więc i podzielcie się ze mną wrażeniami z pobytu w Oceanii. Czekam, czuwam i jak Wielki Brat - patrzę. The Discman, also known as the CD Walkman, was Sony’s brand name for portable CD players. The Sony D-50 (also called D-5, depending on the region) was the first commercially available Discman. It was launched in 1984, two years after mass production of CDs began. The D-50 was named to commemorate Sony’s 50th anniversary. The D-50 sparked public interest in CDs, boosting their popularity and profitability. It was about the size of four CD cases stacked on top of each other. It included a rechargeable battery pack (BP-200), making it ready for mobile use. The original D-50 did not have an integrated battery; users had to attach various battery cases. The D-50 featured line level audio out and a 9-volt coaxial jack for power. It lacked a remote control and repeat function but offered CD playback. Other players from rival companies emerged, but the Discman transformed portable CD players into everyday objects. The Discman brand continued until 2000, when it changed to CD Walkman. The Discman played a crucial role in the digital music revolution. While smartphones and streaming media have replaced CDs, the Discman’s impact remains significant. Your Local Arena and Writing on the Wall present a film screening and panel talk: George Orwell (Part V). George Orwell said about his classic dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, ‘I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive.’ This event, produced in partnership between WoWFEST: FAHRENHEIT 2024 and Your Local Arena, asks: just how close are we to Orwell’s vision — or are we already there? In 1984, BBC’s Arena ran a series of programmes about the life of George Orwell. Part V begins with the tragic death of his wife Eileen in March 1945. Overcome with grief and despairing of the future, Orwell retreated to Jura, a remote Hebridean island. Here, crippled with tuberculosis and isolated from the world, Orwell wrote his last novel, Nineteen Eighty-four, a nightmare vision of a totalitarian future. Orwell explained that ‘The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasise that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere.’ So, are we awake, resisting or sleepwalking into the darkness once again, as imagined by Orwell? Come and watch this classic film about one of the country’s finest writers and listen to a talk afterwards about how near we are to a nineteen eighty-four-type world. Speakers: Dolan Cummings, Director of the Manifesto Club; Director of English PEN Daniel Gorman; and freedom of speech expert Sara Whyatt. 4/4/24-4/5/24 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Il 4 aprile del 2024 ho iniziato la lettura di un libro impegnativo. Il 4 aprile del 1984, Winston Smith inizia a scrivere un diario. Niente di tutto ciò sembra rivoluzionario, fino a quando non si considera che quel 4 aprile ha rappresentato per entrambi l’inizio di un viaggio che ci ha inevitabilmente cambiato. Il 4 aprile del 1984, Winston è un comune cittadino londinese, ma la sua Londra non ha nulla a che vedere con quella che noi conosciamo. La Londra di «1984» è dominata dal Big Brother, simbolo del partito che detiene il potere dell’intero stato dell’Oceania, di cui Londra fa parte. Il Big Brother è ovunque ed è in grado di vedere e sentire tutto, perché ha tanti occhi e tante orecchie. I cittadini sono controllati dalla polizia del partito in ogni momento della giornata, grazie a dispositivi installati in ogni appartamento. L’aderenza all’ideologia del partito deve essere totale e tutto ciò che desta il sospetto di una ribellione può costare la vita. I cittadini sono costretti ad accettare un vero e proprio sistema di pensiero più che una semplice ideologia. Nella Londra che Orwell ha costruito, l’identità del singolo è annientata, perché il singolo esiste solo in quanto parte di un ingranaggio più grande ed è obbligato ad accettare il sistema di realtà imposto dal partito, perchè l’unica realtà esistente è quella dettata dalle leggi del Big Brother. In questa società dominata da una forza invisibile ma allo stesso tempo invalicabile, Winston non riesce ad accettare la logica del partito e sente l’esigenza di affermare le proprie idee: il 4 aprile del 1984, si ribella al Big Brother e inizia a scrivere un diario. I've recently finished re-reading Nineteen Eighty-Four, and I got so much more out of it than when I read it in highschool. As for Fury, I'd say skip it. I'm curious about City of Bones. I read a book: George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). Somehow I had never read this before, only taken it in via osmosis. It is obviously an amazingly prescient feat, but I couldn't help feeling Orwell put the political idea before the novel. Animal Farm blends the two successfully, and his nonfiction is great, but this mostly felt like Historically Important. (Still lots of good bits – I'm being harsh.) Your Local Arena and Writing on the Wall present a film screening and panel talk: George Orwell (Part V) George Orwell said about his classic dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, ‘I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive.’ This event, produced in partnership between WoWFEST: FAHRENHEIT 2024 and Your Local Arena, asks: just how close are we to Orwell’s vision — or are we already there? In 1984, BBC’s Arena ran a series of programmes about the life of George Orwell. Part V begins with the tragic death of his wife Eileen in March 1945. Overcome with grief and despairing of the future, Orwell retreated to Jura, a remote Hebridean island. Here, crippled with tuberculosis and isolated from the world, Orwell wrote his last novel, Nineteen Eighty-four, a nightmare vision of a totalitarian future. Orwell explained that ‘The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasise that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere.’ So, are we awake, resisting or sleepwalking into the darkness once again, as imagined by Orwell? Come and watch this classic film about one of the country’s finest writers and listen to a talk afterwards about how near we are to a nineteen eighty-four-type world. Speakers: Dolan Cummings, Director of the Manifesto Club; Director of English PEN Daniel Gorman; and freedom of speech expert Sara Whyatt.
