I vividly remember my drawing teacher in college saying that there were no straight lines in nature, just edges that look like lines to us. The process should be to shade and contour until we create an edge. Another strong memory from college was my graphic design teacher very politely telling me that I was putting lines on my designs that didn’t really need to be there. Funny how they were both so right, and I am just now getting it as an almost 30 year old artist. I look back on my artistic journey and recognize that I have struggled massively with identity and “brand” but I have always loved lines. Simple yet beautiful. I think this is why I wrestle between my designer brain and my ceramic brain. Line art and typography are generally in the digital world, while texture and clay in the physical. I know they can exist on equal planes. Plenty of people do it beautifully, but maybe I am finally finding my place. Colin - our kids have a dad who is patient, loving and funny. Watching you catch blueberries in the air as Owen giggles, building inventions quietly with Micah and the famous daddy snuggles Lucy requests - it doesn’t get much better than watching you be a father. Cocodona - Day 1 The start line of an ultra marathon is such a different vibe from a road race, and I’m here for it! After seeing the runners off, I went for a hike at Black Canyon Trailhead and got a glimpse of the beauty I’m in for this week. Headed down to a water crossing, found (and quickly left) a big kitty in a bush, then out to Bumblebee to wait for our “ticket” to Crown King (the coolest little town in the middle of nowhere). Made sure Tandi was in good spirits, fed, and had happy feet when she rolled in, then away she went. Drained some blisters on my own feet, and wasn’t paying attention as a runner came past and I told him, “Great job, I’m proud of you!” He replied, “Thanks, I just puked back there!” Turns out, it was Harley! Got to hang with his crew for a bit before seeing him off. Back down the mountain, a beautiful sunset drive to Tandi’s with a quick stop at the grocery store for some snacks, and the softest bed I’ve ever slept in.
