Another glorious day in Broadstairs! Come along to the Dickens House Museum today and meet our wonderful volunteers. Without them this house wouldn’t be able to open each week. Not only do we open five days a week but our volunteers open the house for TV crews and schools visits. We’re happy to celebrate these unsung heroes here at the house and across Thanet. If it wasn’t for these dedicated people the Heritage sites across our fabulous isle wouldn’t be able to open. We’re open today from 1pm-4pm. #Broadstairs #DickensHouseMuseum #ThingsToDoInThanet #CharlesDickens #VisitThanet #VikingBay #Volunteering #volunteer #volunteerwork #VolunteerOpportunity

🎩 We’ve been a little quiet of late because we’ve been watching Michael Portillo as David Copperfield on an endless loop on BBC iPlayer! Mesmerising. ☀️ Wasn’t it tremendous to see Dickens House and Broadstairs on the telly! Those golden sands, the sunshine, the warm welcome in the museum…why don’t you come along and see for yourself what Michael Portillo loved about his visit to Broadstairs. 🤫 The house is open every week from Wednesday to Sunday and, if you ask us nicely, we’ll spill some behind-the-scenes beans. 📷 Andrew Stokes The Broadstairs Dickens Fellowship #Broadstairs #DickensHouseMuseum #ThingsToDoInThanet #CharlesDickens #VisitThanet #VikingBay #michaelPortillo #bbc #bbciplayer #mesmerism #greatbritishtrainjourney #thingstodoinkent #localheritage #localhistory #vikingbaybeach #vikingbaybroadstairs

@coastal_construction_ltd where privileged to work on the balcony repairs at #dickenshousemuseum in Broadstairs. Dickens House Museum celebrates Charles Dickens’ long connection with Broadstairs (1837-1851). It is housed in the cottage that was Charles Dickens’ inspiration for the home of Betsey Trotwood in David Copperfield. According to the reminiscences of Charles Dickens son Charley, they regularly had tea there with Miss Mary Pearson Strong, and her belief of her right to stop the passage of donkeys in front of her cottage became the donkey incident for the character of Betsey Trotwood. #broadstairs #balcony #charlesdickens #constructionuk

Is this raven ‘the most famous bird in the world?’ Dickens owned three ravens called Grip but none was more cherished than the first one. Grip has been immortalised in many ways and her first appearance was in the story of Barnaby Rudge. A second occurrence was in a portrait commissioned by the Dickens’ on the occasion of their tour of America. Catherine had to be persuaded to go and only did so on the condition she had a portrait of her children. Daniel Maclise, acclaimed Irish artist, duly obliged and completed the charming image of four of the Dickens’ children with Grip standing sentry over them. Whilst on his first tour of America Dickens had the opportunity of meeting Edgar Allan Poe. Poe had been quite critical of the novel Barnaby Rudge but was delighted to learn that the raven was based on a real bird. He was so taken with it that he went on to have some success with his narrative 1845 poem ‘The Raven’. Oh how we love these links… But to go back to Grip. Grip met an untimely death in 1841 after consuming lead based paint but to commemorate her Dickens had her autopsied and stuffed - he thought she had been deliberately poisoned. She was with him, overlooking his desk, until the day he died. However that’s not the end of her story. Grip is once more on display at a library in Philadelphia and, as chance would have it, the copper plate commemorating the loss of another much loved Dickens’ bird - Dick - is (apparently) displayed just opposite her. 🐦‍⬛ Nevermore. #Broadstairs #DickensHouseMuseum #ThingsToDoInThanet #CharlesDickens #VisitThanet #VikingBay #localheritage #localhistory #vikingbaybeach #vikingbaybroadstairs #Edgar #Allan #edgarallanpoe #raven #theraven #DanielMaclise #CatherineDickens #Grip

We’re continuing our posts about Charles Dickens and his love of animals. 🐈‍⬛ Bob, or The Master’s Cat, was another favourite and is depicted in the picture. 🕯️ Bob sought the attention of Dickens by extinguishing the candle with his paw. 🐾 Mary, in her book My Father As I Recall Him, recounts the following anecdote… ‘On account of our birds, cats were not allowed in the house […] but Williamina’s numerous offspring had a happy home at ‘Gad’s Hill’ […]. One of these kittens was kept, who, as he was quite deaf, was left unnamed, and became known by the servants as ‘the master’s cat’, because of his devotion to my father. He was always with him, and used to follow him about the garden like a dog, and sit with him while he wrote. One evening […] ‘The master’ was reading at a small table, on which a lighted candle was placed. Suddenly the candle went out. My father, who was much interested in his book, relighted the candle and stroked the cat, who was looking at him pathetically he noticed, and continued his reading. A few minutes later, as the light became dim, he looked up just in time to see puss deliberately put out the candle with his paw, and then look appealingly toward him. This isn’t quite the end of Bob’s story but we’ll save that for another time. #Broadstairs #DickensHouseMuseum #ThingsToDoInThanet #CharlesDickens #VisitThanet #VikingBay #thingstodoinkent #localheritage #localhistory #vikingbaybroadstairs #ThingsToDoInThanet #broadstairskent #visitkent #CharlesDickens #cat #catstagram #NationalPetMonth #GadsHill

As part of National Pet Month we’re celebrating Charles Dickens’ love of animals. Did you know that Dickens was a great animal lover and over the years had many furry and feathered companions? One of the family favourites was a canary called Dick. 🏖️The bird was given to his daughters Mary and Kate when they were holidaying in Broadstairs in the summer of 1851. 📕In her book My Father As I Recall Him, Mary wrote: 🐣‘Whilst at Broadstairs our bathing woman, who reared birds, gave a canary to my sister and myself. The bird called Dick was only a few weeks old when he came to us, but he grew to be a very king of birds and became a most important member of the household.’ 🪦Dick eventually died on October 4, 1866, at the ripe old age of 15. 🥀Dickens had him buried under a favourite rose bush, and had a copper memorial made with this simple but heartfelt inscription: “This is the grave of Dick, the best of birds, Born at Broadstairs, Midsummer, 1851, died Gad’s Hill Place, 14th of October 1866.” If you want to know about the life of Charles Dickens then come in to the museum to find out more . We’re open today and over the weekend from 1pm-4pm. #Broadstairs #DickensHouseMuseum #ThingsToDoInThanet #CharlesDickens #VisitThanet #VikingBay #NationalPetMonth #canary #GadsHill #Kent

🐣We had a fantastic opening weekend, helped in no small part by the sunny weather, but also through the enthusiasm and interest shown by our wonderful visitors. 🎭we were entertained by the Dickens Declaimers who brought the characters of Dickens alive through their excellent readings (2nd picture) 🏠we were thrilled to welcome Tim, originally from Margate, who was celebrating his 75th birthday. He wanted to see the dolls house that is a replica of The Charles Dickens Museum in Doughty Street, London. Tim’s family donated the house to the Dickens House Museum a few years ago. Tim’s mother was a huge fan of Dickens and was inspired to create this replica building in the early 1980s. It was such a pleasure to meet Tim and his wife and learn more about their family and the background of the house. Thank you for visiting and we hope you had a wonderful birthday weekend. ☀️We’re hoping for more sun again this week and will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 1pm - 4pm. #Broadstairs #DickensHouseMuseum #ThingsToDoInThanet #CharlesDickens #VisitThanet #VikingBay

🎩✒️ Happy World Poetry Day! 📜🌟 Today, as we celebrate the beauty of verse, we couldn't resist sharing a gem from the master wordsmith himself, Charles Dickens. 📖 "Lucy's Song" by Charles Dickens: How beautiful at eventide To see the twilight shadows pale, Steal o'er the landscape, far and wide, O'er stream and meadow, mound and dale! How soft is Nature's calm repose When ev'ning skies their cool dews weep: The gentlest wind more gently blows, As if to soothe her in her sleep! The gay morn breaks, Mists roll away, All Nature awakes To glorious day. In my breast alone Dark shadows remain; The peace it has known It can never regain. We don't know who Lucy is but she obviously made quite an impression upon a young Charles Dickens. The poem was written in about 1836 and embodies all the elements of Romanticism, such as nature, love and beauty (see also Byron, Blake, Shelley and Barret Browning - for all you GCSE fans out there). #WorldPoetryDay #CharlesDickens #LiteraryLegacy #DickensHouseMuseum 📚

As part of International Women’s Day we want to #InspireInclusion. ⛪️As a first post it seemed apt to celebrate Miss Mary Pearson Strong. Miss Strong lived in #Broadstairs in a house that is now the Dickens House Museum. ✍️Charles Dickens visited Miss Strong in her home on his trips to this part of the Kent coast and, no doubt, enjoyed the dramatic views out over the sea. 🫏Miss Strong was the inspiration for one of Dickens’ famous characters - Betsey Trotwood, a woman who had been ill treated by her husband and who was the great aunt of David Copperfield. 🎥The character of Betsey Trotwood has been portrayed on the silver screen since 1911 when Flora Robson first took on this role. Since then another eight actors have brought their own interpretations to this role. 🥀Miss Strong died in 1855 and is buried in St Peter’s-in-Thanet churchyard. 🎬We don’t have any images of Miss Strong but we can share with you the actors who have portrayed Betsey Trotwood over the years. This is a bit of a cheat as it’s not actually in my library. It’s a book I saw in the Dickens Museum in London when I spent Christmas Eve there about five years ago. I know it’s a bit early for some if I mention the “c” word when we’re still in November but I’ve been feeling festive recently and have been thinking a lot about Christmas books. What do books mean at Christmas? Ghost stories are traditional, as is the Nativity story for Christians, of course. I often buy books as presents and it’s not unusual for publishers to bring out especially beautiful editions at this time of year. A gorgeous edition of ETA Hoffman’s The Nutcracker, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol or The Pickwick Papers make lovely, special presents. I took a picture of this book when I saw it just because I thought it was a beautifully made book. And I loved the colour it had retained despite the opportunities it must have had to fade. That Christmas Eve spent at the Dickens Museum was a day of stories, not least A Christmas Carol being told all over the house by actors. At one point I was eating a mince pie in Dickens’ house on Christmas Eve - I basically *was* Christmas - and it was a memorable and lovely day. Stories can be like that sometimes… I love the space between Christmas and New Year where you can sit and read a book and it feels a little like time is standing still. A chance to read the books you’ve been gifted, retreat to a fireside armchair with a favourite book, or start writing a story of your own. What books does this time of year make you think about? 📚 #dickens #dickensmuseum #dickenshouse #dickenshousemuseum #achristmascarol #christmascarol #bobcratchit #scrooge #theghostofchristmaspast #ghoststories #christmaseve #christmasstories #pickwickpapers #thepickwickpapers #theghostofchristmaspresent #theghostofchristmasyettocome #turkey #christmas #christmasfood #christmascarols #christmasbooks #booksasgifts #booksaspresents #givemorebooks #readmorebooks #bookworm

#’Miss Havisham’ a Dickens story of a woman who was jilted at the alter. She never recovered and wore her wedding dress and locked herself in her home. Dickens was inspired by this true story when he came to Sydney. It’s a long story but I love history. You can visit her grave in Newtown, it’s one of those things you cannot let go so I’m still painting the area and making her in textiles. Hope you enjoy my little journey. #throwbackthursday What's more quintessentially Christmas than a December visit to the London home of Charles Dickens? ( 2019) Dickens and his wife moved here just a few months before Queen Victoria began her reign. His works helped make Christmas fashionable again among the middle and upper classes at a time when Britain was exploring new traditions like the Christmas tree, popularized by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert! Dickens always loved Christmas and he had great empathy for the poor, especially children, as seen through the character of Tiny Tim. Dickens' own father was committed to a debtor's prison forcing Charles, at age 12 to work in appalling conditions in a shoe blacking factory. Dickens', A Christmas Carol encourages us to keep the spirit of Christmas throughout the whole year. I plan on reading A Christmas Carol this year for the first time after loving all the movie and theater versions throughout the years! . . . . . #noplacelikehome615 #london #dickenshousemuseum #achristmascarol #victorianengland

🇬🇧: The Dickens House museum is located in Broadstairs, Kent and it is a cottage that was Charles Dickens’ inspiration for the home of Betsey Trotwood in David Copperfield. The character Betsey Trotwood is based on Miss Mary Pearson Strong who actually lived in the cottage. Charles Dickens and his son Charley regularly had tea and cakes in the parlour with the kind Miss Mary Pearson Strong. The cottage was also passage of donkeys. Another inspiration for the character of Betsey Trotwood. The cottage now is a museum and owns a magnificent collection of prints and a selection of letters written by Charles Dickens. Although I have visited Broadstairs twice, I didn’t have the chance to find the museum open. Fingers crossed the 3rd time I will be luckier! #charlesdickens #dickenshouse #dickenshousemuseum #broadstairs #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booklover #instabook #book #booknerd #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookaddiction #bookaddict #booktime #bookcommunity #bookobsessed #bookclub #read #diavazo #instavivlio #instavivliofagoi #vivlio #vivliofagos #vivlioprotaseis #vivliophile #vivliokritikes #bookpublication #ekdoseis

If you had three hours to kill before catching a train from St. Pancras, would you: (1) patiently wait nearby, (2) queue for a photo at the neighbouring train station King’s Cross (you-know-where), (3) quickly go into London-town, (4) sit down for a last cup of tea, (5) google any museums nearby? I opted for (5) and spontaneously found myself in the Charles Dickens Museum. Not the worst choice, even if one is not overly familiar with his work. 😇 What I learned is that he must have been an incredible narrator of his stories, preparing live readings at length and taking immense pleasure in seeing his audience’s reactions. – After a successful gig, he usually sat down and listed the number of fainting ladies. Sounds lovely, doesn't it ... Are you a fan of Mr Dickens and his work?   This post was inspired by #TreasureTuesday hosted by my knowledgeable friend Cam @nightfallmysteries as well as #vintagemagicbookclub © the wonderful Romey (her collection is truly magical, if you like vintage books, you should deffo hop right over to @literarygem ♡ )

No wonder that Broadstairs was Charles Dickens’ favourite holiday spot. #broadstairs #kent #charlesdickens #broadstairsbeach #sea #vikingbay #sunshine #dickenshousemuseum #england #swimming #fisherman #isleofthanet #february #trip #fishermanvillage #beach #cliff #holiday #polishgirl #photography #bluesky #travelphotography #memories #weekend #catchthemoment #enjoythemoment #relax

A first visit to the @dickensmuseum - wonderful especially during the Christmas Season. Took a brief break from the Folk Festival to visit the Dickens House Museum in Broadstairs. This was once the home of Miss Mary Pearson Strong, on whom Dickens based much of the character of Miss Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield. The house museum contains memorabilia associated with Dickens' time in Broadstairs. Unfortunately, the staff here are so incredibly rude (officious, unfriendly, and obsessed with people not taking photos) and the museum so badly curated (haphazard, ill-thought-out, & decontextualised) that it will now be used as one of my case studies on 'How Not To Run a Museum' for my UoB Heritage modules! #dickenshousemuseum #broadstairs #hownottorunamuseum #museumreview #exhibitionreview #charlesdickens #heritage #academiclife #academicbreak
