ROME / AMALFI COAST 🇮🇹 Every Time I Go on Vacation Someone Dies by Catherine Mack This novel takes the reader at a right old clip from Rome to Pompeii, through Sorrento, stopping along the Amalfi Coast and ending in Salerno. The synopsis from the cover blurb: Ten Days Eight suspects Six cities ([sic] actually half are towns but let’s not quibble) Five authors Three bodies One trip to die for Eleanor Dash pens the best-selling Vacation Mystery series which include titles like “When in Rome” / “When in Nice” / “Death on the Thames” and 6 more. The tenth title is in gestation and may just be called “Amalfi Made Me Do It“…. All bode well for some #literarytravel!! Eleanor is now on a 10 day publicity tour in Italy. She hasn’t familiarised herself with the itinerary and is in for a shock when she sees the people brought together on tour. She is supported by her sister, Harper, and tagging along is Connor, her ex-lover, who clearly appears as himself in her novels. She is determined to kill him off (in her books, she maintains) but he is more than miffed that she hasn’t had the decency to give him an alias. He has therefore, sort of, blackmailed her. The motley group comprises, among others, a stalker, a couple of authors and several chosen winners of a competition to accompany her, as she tours the sights and carries out her research for her next book. These are The BookFace Ladies, inspired by the “..that thing they do on Instagram when they hold up a book to their face to the match the image” (the cover of her novel “When in Rome” is half a woman’s face with a Rome backdrop). There are 20 participants, picked from 20,000 entrants. She is clearly a popular author. There are 237 footnotes, yes, really, far too many. She uses a couple of them to take a pop at reviewers (NEVER refer to a book as “meh”: Footnote 50)… and as for "MeanReads" (Footnote 101)...! 😉 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #literature #fiction #travel #catherinemack #everytimeigoonvacationsomeonedies #amalfi #rome

#LiteraryTourism #Hemingway #KeyWest So lucky to have spent a few days in Key West, Florida a couple of weeks ago 🏝️ And I was particularly happy to visit Hemingway's House there, famous for its 59 cats, most of them polydactyl (that is to say with 6 or 7 toes instead of the usual 4 or 5), and all of them super cute 😻 Why those cats, you might ask? Hemingway was once gifted a polydactyl cat by a sailor friend, and her offspring went on with the gene. The house also boasts a gorgeous garden with colourful lush vegetation and the biggest private swimming pool on the island (swipe to see pictures). And obviously you get to have a glimpse at Hemingway's office there, where his then wife Pauline kept all his papers in spite of their subsequent divorce, knowing Hemingway's work was valuable. I love visiting literary places - you get to better understand the writer that you'd known only through his or her writings. What literary places have you visited? Gwen

BERLIN 1979 🇩🇪 A question of Time by James Stejskal The author brings his vast military experience and historical acumen to this novel. The book takes the reader back to divided Berlin, when spying activities were part of the fabric of the city and risk-taking was part of the Cold War experience. A CIA officer working in East Berlin has seemingly been compromised and Kim Becker, Vietnam veteran and a member of a U.S crack team is tasked with extricating him in one piece. Their mission is to bring him out, but first they have to get across the Wall into East Berlin.... The author knows how to tell a story, one that seems well researched but I think there is a lot of 'telling' which is not really balanced by the 'showing', a lot of narrative that reads almost like a history book and consequently perhaps feels a little dry. It is nevertheless pacy and feels incredibly well researched and detailed and it will find its readership amongst those who like a snappy and taut tale of espionage and tactical handling. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #literature #fiction #travel #jamesstejskal #aquestionoftime #berlin #eastberlin

I’m reading SUMMER ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA by Jennifer Bohnet and the characters have been visiting the local brocante, or flea market. Brings back memories of a sunny morning at the outdoor brocante in Antibes - I wish I’d stopped to make a purchase. Maybe a vintage purse or scarf… ***** “Gabriella Jacques, is happy to be back in her childhood home, Villa Espoir in the South of France ready to embrace fresh experiences with friends new and old and to heal some deep family scars. Recently widowed Harriet Rogers, hopes to rebuild her family life and reconnect with Elodie, the daughter she abandoned into her mother Gabby’s care to follow her heart. But when an acquaintance from the past seeks her out, Harriet fears a secret from her past will ruin her plans. Elodie Jacques, adores her new life in her Grandmother’s old home as a freelance journalist. Her relationship with her mother is tense as she struggles to understand why her mother won’t talk to her about the past, as until their past is resolved, there can be no future. Will these three women, all living under the same roof after two decades adrift be able to put aside the past and find harmony in the present together?” @jenniewriter #travelmemories #brocante #antibes #frenchriviera #armchairtravel #travelbybook #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #triplit #tripfiction #travelfiction #destinationfiction #literarytourism #armchairtraveler #travelread #bookishlove #bookobsessed #bookishlife #bookrecommendations #bookwormlife #booknerdigans #readstagram #readingisfun #readmore #lovereadingbooks #bibliophile #bookaholic #instareads #summerreading #summerreads

CUMBRIA / YORKSHIRE 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 You Are Here by David Nicholls Novel of an A W Wainright walk through Cumbria and Yorkshire #audiobook narrated by Lee Ingleby and Lydia Leonard Oh, goodness, if this isn’t a reminder of what a terrific author can conjure up? I have long been a fan of David Nicholls and this is probably the most polished and engrossing read yet. The story is set just after the pandemic, specifically over the Easter period 2021. It tells the story of Michael and Marnie, who both have failed relationships behind them. Marnie is a little world weary and enjoys her own company, working at home as a freelance copy editor and Michael is a geography teacher, who enthusiastically loves his subject They are both set in their ways and given their ages, 38 and 42 years old respectively, they are bringing a great deal of baggage to this hike, in more ways than one. Marnie has packed more than enough changes of underwear, including an assortment of evening dresses, whereas Michael, the ardent and experienced walker (who is itching to hone Marnie’s walking acumen) has packed only the bare necessities. They have been invited to join a group of friends for a post-pandemic hike, lasting several days and following an A W Wainright route from Cumbria through Yorkshire to Middlesbrough, with a target destination at Robin Hood’s Bay. It’s maybe 190 or so miles that will pass through some of Britain’s most stunning countryside. He beautifully captures the banter and repartee between the two, with Marnie excelling at witty ripostes. They talk about all manner of things and the reader is wonderfully roped in to the minutiae of their walk, written with a charm and insight sustained almost throughout the narrative. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #davidnicholls #youarehere #yorkshire #cumbria

CAMBRIDGE – PARIS – DUBAI 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇫🇷 🇦🇪 The Final Act of Juliette Willoughby by Ellery Lloyd A story as unpredictable as they come… The Final Act of Juliette Willoughby by Ellery Lloyd, the pseudonym for the husband-and-wife writing team Collette Lyons and Paul Vlitos, is set variously in Cambridge, Paris and Dubai and stretches from the Surrealism art period of the 1930s to modern-day Dubai. The story is interwoven with multiple threads, starting with the deaths of heiress and ambitious Surrealist artist, Juliette Willoughby, and her married lover in a suspicious fire in a Parisian studio. Fast forward to 1991 Cambridge, where two equally ambitious art history students, Caroline and Patrick, embark on their dissertations on the work of the afore-mentioned Juliette Willoughby and her painting, Self-Portrait as Sphinx. When they stumble across clues that point to something suspicious about Juliette’s death in that fire in Paris, their detective work leads them to expose some long-hidden secrets in Juliette’s family’s history…. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #dubai #paris #london #thefinalactofjulietwilloughby #ellerylloyd

Happy birthday to the legendary Hergé, the mastermind behind Tintin! 🎨🎂 Last year, around this time of the year our founders, Shilpi and Manish were in Belgium. They had ventured to the heart of Belgium to explore the vibrant Hergé Museum just outside Brussels. Exploring a world where comic strips spring to life, celebrating a legacy that stretches from quaint European corners to the moon’s craters. Did you know? Hergé crafted these adventures meticulously, often using real-world influences which make Tintin’s escapades feel incredibly authentic and detailed. 🤩📚 . . . . . . . #bookishplaces #prag #praguelibrary #booktower #bücherturm #bookishart #literarytravel #literarytourism #prettybookplaces #booksonbooks #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramgermany

I loved MASTERING THE ART OF FRENCH MURDER, the first book in a fun new mystery series by Colleen Cambridge. It’s set in Paris and features Julia Child as the heroine’s neighbour. ***** “As Paris rediscovers its joie de vivre, Tabitha Knight, recently arrived from Detroit for an extended stay with her French grandfather, is on her own journey of discovery. Paris isn’t just the City of Light; it’s the city of history, romance, stunning architecture . . . and food. Thanks to her neighbor and friend Julia Child, another expat who’s fallen head over heels for Paris, Tabitha is learning how to cook for her Grandpère and her Oncle Rafe. Between tutoring Americans in French, and sampling the results of Julia’s studies at Le Cordon Bleu cooking school, Tabitha’s sojourn is thoroughly delightful. That is, until the cold December day they return to Julia’s building and learn that a body has been found in the cellar. Tabitha recognizes the victim from a party given by Julia’s sister, Dort, the night before. The murder weapon is recognizable too—a knife from Julia’s kitchen. Tabitha is eager to help the investigation, but is shocked when Inspector Merveille reveals that a note, in Tabitha’s handwriting, was found in the dead woman’s pocket. Now, from the shadows of the Tour Eiffel, to the Childs’ tiny kitchen, to the grungy streets of Montmartre, Tabitha navigates the city, hoping to find the real killer before she or one of her friends ends up in prison . . . or worse.” #murdermystery #mysterybooks #juliachild #paris #armchairtravel #travelbybook #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #triplit #tripfiction #travelfiction #destinationfiction #literarytourism #armchairtraveler #travelread #bookishlove #bookobsessed #bookishlife #bookrecommendations #bookwormlife #booknerdigans #readstagram #readingisfun #readmore #lovereadingbooks #bibliophile #bookaholic #instareads #instabook #bookgram

GREECE 🇬🇷 1. Unpacking for Greece by Sally Jane Smith The premise of this memoir is very unusual. Sally discovered that her mother had made a trip in 1978 and had kept a little notebook of her adventures and jottings. This became the delightful and informative reference point for the trip that the author herself planned to undertake, when she was at a point in her life that saw her craving change and craving a Greek adventure. It wasn’t a simple task to interpret the writing and all Sally had to go on at times, for example, was “plumber’s friend in jar”! But there was nevertheless sufficient information for her to be able to create a tour around her mother’s notebook that would bring pleasure, adventure, challenges at several levels and insights. As TripFiction said of the memoir: “An inspired Greek odyssey, balm for the soul”. 2. Repacking for Greece by Sally Jane Smith The principles of the first trip were once again resurrected, almost as an afterthought, when a planned trip to see family in Canada fell apart. Sally had grown up in South Africa and had protested against Apartheid and had had a little trouble, which stymied her entry to Canada. She had planned 'free' time on her hands, so why not return to her beloved Greece instead? She shares all kinds of personal experiences and observations as she travels around the country. She reads books as she goes and having been to Delphi, she chooses to read Devil of Delphi by Jeffrey Siger, a wonderful example of #literarytravel in action! The memoirs have a touching honesty and offer wonderful insights into culture, tradition and geography. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #sallyjanesmith #repackingforgreece #unpackingforgreece #greece

BERLIN 🇩🇪 Anatomy of a Killer by Romy Hausmann I read Dear Child by the same author several years ago and it really stuck with me because of the writing, the translation and the reverse timeline story, which was very novel at the time. Now, Berlin 2017 and young girls have been disappearing over the past few years. There has almost been one killing per year since June 2003. The victims’ whereabouts can sometimes be found through the deliberate signage of a fluttering red ribbon. Early in the novel, internationally renowned Professor Walter Lesniak is arrested as the perpetrator of these crimes. Professor Death, as he comes to be known in the newspapers, has a daughter, Ann, who is utterly taken aback that her father could be even remotely capable of such heinous crimes. She sets out to discover the truth. Is he culpable or is someone else still free to roam the streets, blithely carrying on with the killing spree? 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #anatomyofakiller #romyhausmann #berlin #destinationthriller

May the Fourth be with you all, regardless of where your primary fandom lies. Personally, I'm in every camp, from 'Live Long and Prosper' to 'So Say We All.' From 'Our Last Best Hope' to 'Never Surrender.' I count myself a rapacious SF/F omnivore even as I pack my towel and celebrate both the glorious 25th and towel day. Today is a day when I encourage all fans in all fandoms to embrace each other as just that: fellow fans. Of something. Of anything. There are people out there in the world that do not know the joy of being an SF/F fan of some kind. Go help them. One of my daily mantras, adapted from Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is: "Enthusiasm is my spiritual commitment to creativity." Revel in your enthusiasm! Share it! And honor it in those you meet, even though their fandom may be different from yours. #maythefourthbewithyou #starwars #sciencefiction #fandom #proudfan #nerdproud #usetheforce #forceforgood #towelday #towelday2024 #theglorious25thiscoming #dontpanic #42places #fortytwoplaces #literarytourism #literarytours #douglasadamsfan #douglasadamstravel #douglasadamsfootsteps #douglasadamstours #travelsolo #douglasadamslondon

CHESTER-LE-STREET 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The Toffee Factory Girls by Glenda Young This novel is set in 1915, when WW1 was raging, and boys and young men were heading off to war. The women left behind had to fill the extra gaps, and thus three young women, in different capacities, find themselves working at Jack's Toffee Factory in Chester-le-Street. Here, the owner takes care of his workers, an anomaly in the period. These are plucky young women, who have to find their way through everyday life. Irascible landlords, threatening behaviours, wayward family members; they have to learn to face the hardships of the time. Together, the women - Anne, Hetty and Elsie - are a force of nature, determined to do right by others... The author really does an excellent job of researching the setting and period, and if you follow her on Social Media you can join her on her research adventures. Just imagine! All the toffees had to wrapped in paper by hand and the logo had to be straight and just so. She describes the Durham Light Infantry heading off to war (until 2016 there was a museum dedicated to the brigade, founded in 1758, although there are rumours of a new museum opening in the future). In Birtley, there was a Belgian village - Elizabethville - that was built around the needs of an armaments factory, populated by French and Walloon speakers, with their own school, cafe and hospital. These elements are incorporated into the storyline to add veracity and a sense of history. This is the first in a trilogy. The novel is easy to read and bowls along at a good pace, with drama and redemption aplenty. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #chesterlestreet #thetoffeefactorygirls #glendayoung

SRI LANKA 🇱🇰 Brotherless Night by V V Ganeshananthan Longlisted for the Women's Prize (Fiction) 2024 AND shortlisted for the prestigious Carol Shields Prize for Fiction. I have recently visited Sri Lanka, and it is a country recovering from all kinds of difficulties and I really wanted to get a feel for the country's history. Fiction can often be a key in understanding of, not only events but also emotional responses. This novel focusses on the civil war that raged across three decades, where the Tamils were in the minority and remorselessly persecuted by the majority ruling Sinhalese. As the novel opens, Sashi is 16, growing up in a Tamil household in 1981 and, despite being in a rather male dominated society, she wants to train as a doctor. She is already aware of the iniquities between factions in Jaffna, and moves down to Colombo to start her training. Her brother does what he has to in order to further the cause of the Tamils and she too is soon drawn into the murky and bloody dynamics of civil war. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #srilanka #VVGaneshananthan #brotherlessnight

TOKYO 🇯🇵 Goodnight Tokyo by Atshuhiro Yoshida TR: Haydn Trowell Coming 18 July 2024 The concept of these short, interconnected stories is interesting. Matsui drives a taxi at night and every morning (as it were) he sets off at 1am to pick up a variety of passengers. He has to drop them off all over the metropolis and as he drives he gets to hear some interesting stories. Stories that are coloured by the dark city, as it winds down a little for a few hours. Matsui always ends his night at his favourite diner, tempted by one of their famous dishes. Each story has a delightful title. "The Loquat Thief" is the opening story and Mitsuki is a 'procurer' for film sets. This time, at very short notice, she has to find some loquats for first thing in the morning, so she is on a night-time mission to hunt them down in order to fulfil her duty. Her story is picked up after one of the frequent earthquakes that plague the city, in "Two Moons". She has secured the peanut crusher... (whatever that is). Other titles are “A Rain of Feathers” or “Blue Staircases – there are 12 stories in total. Other characters come and go, sharing aspects of their lives with the reader through the vehicle 😉 of Matsui's taxi. I very much like fiction set in Tokyo, as it takes me back to time spent there. With these stories I struggled to really engage with the narrative and characters, and I think these stories won't stick with me for the longer term. I also get the manga/cartoon nature of artwork in the popular Japanese publishing sector, but this cover would not attract me in a bookshop. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #goodnightotkyo #atsuhiroyoshida #haydntrowell #tokyo

CUMBRIA through YORKSHIRE (but "actually" in Hexham - not far from the setting of this novel!) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Enjoyed a lovely hour of chat at Hexham Book Festival, where David Nicholls was talking about his new book "You Are Here", as well as "One Day", writing, love, life, walking, rain (rather HEAVY rain!) and some very 'quaint' (definitely fictional) places to stay... If you are intending to follow in the footsteps of Michael and Marnie from "You Are Here" (you know, indulging in a bit of #literarytourism 😉), then he suggests the first four days of the c.194 mile walk across England (part of the setting of the novel), over to Shap - this route probably offers the most enjoyable and scenic parts of the walk. CHINA 🇨🇳 River East, River West by Aube Rey Lescure -- Shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2024 The novel opens in 2007 when 14 year old Alva is observing the marriage ceremony between her mother, Sloan (an American) and a decidedly unsuitable Lu Fang, who wears suits with cheap satin sheens (just one of his many perceived faults). As a family, of course, they have to get on. Alva’s ambition is to attend The American School in Shanghai, one possible escape from her family set-up but it probably isn’t going to be the nirvana she anticipates. It has two campuses either side of the Huangpu River, Puxi – River West (the old colonial area) and Pudong River East, with ‘its rabid housing developments and family-friendly malls’, the equivalent of suburbia. The novel then goes back to 1985 Qingdao, setting an historical context for Lu Fang's life. This was a period when there were virtually no white people in the country and any sightings caused profound curiosity. And in just over 20 years it is apparent that so much has changed, and the speed of that change is quite breath-taking. This is a subtly different story on the nature of the immigrant experience and finding one’s place, and the storyline doesn’t shy away from difficult topics. The writing style of this debut author is incredibly confident and robust and there is a good sense of place in the novel. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #china #shanghai #qingdao #aubereylescure #rivereastriverwest

CLAPHAM, London 1946 The Midnight Man by Julie Anderson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The book is set over the period of several days, in and around The South London Hospital for Women and Children, a real medical facility that was established by Maud Chadburn and Eleanor Davies-Colley, offering health services to women. There was a real need for a hospital that specialised in women’s health – just as the NHS was being founded – in November 1946. The post WW2 period – captured well on many levels in this novel – was a time that saw the rights of women side-lined and their place in society diminished. After playing an important part in the war, the women were expected to return to subservience, get married and generally cause no waves. As the novel opens, a chance encounter at the hospital sees Faye befriending Ellie, and these two women soon form a firm friendship, although tested at times. Early on, it transpires that a young woman – Jane – has been murdered, her flatmate already missing, and both Faye and Ellie are frustrated by the lack of investigation into the woman’s death. Ellie, from her bedroom, did in fact hear a perturbing encounter between a man and a woman, and as the hours pass, she is convinced that the woman she heard screaming was Jane. She has huge regret that she didn’t somehow intervene or raise the alarm.... who might have killed her? 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #julieanderson #themidnightman #clapham #london

Check out this review of The Descent!! Reposted from @tripfiction WORLD 🌏 The Descent by Paul Hardisty An Odyssey around a broken world In the publicity, The Descent is billed as a prequel to Paul’s critically acclaimed first climate change novel The Forcing. Yes, it is… but it is also a sequel. The Forcing describes a family fleeing a man-made climate catastrophe and famine-induced wars to the relative safety of Australia. They travelled by small boat from the States, along South America, and across the Southern Ocean to Australia. There were in great danger every inch of the way. In a remote coastal part of Australia they settled and began to rebuild their lives. The Descent covers the period in the US – and in global business and politics – that leads up to the climate catastrophe. A cabal of ruthless global billionaires corner most of the wealth of the world and exploit everyone else. They lead extravagant and decadent life styles. They wipe out whole populations to ensure food security for themselves. The Forcing and The Descent are, clearly, both works of fiction. But it is not that huge a leap of imagination to take us from where we are today to a future of the kind described. Paul is not just an author. He is also a very respected environmental scientist. We should listen to his words. Currently reading: ITALY EVER AFTER by @leoniejmack with many happy memories of another of the gorgeous Italian Lakes, Lake Maggiore 😍 ***** “TV journalist Lou feels battered and bruised after her divorce from Phil, the father of her daughter Edie. Her confidence and sense of fun have steadily been drained away, and she isn’t sure who she is any more. When the opportunity arises to accompany Edie on a music camp in Italy for a month in the summer, Lou jumps at the chance for new adventures, new horizons and new friends. The hazy warmth of the summer sun, shining brightly over the stunning Lake Garda, slowly brings Lou back to life. Nick Romano, Edie’s music teacher, loves being home in Italy, but coaching his students for their concert in Milan, is bringing back difficult memories. His blossoming friendship with Lou is the perfect distraction, although a summer fling would be easier to conduct without the scrutiny of his mother Greta, not to mention the interference of his extended Italian family. As the summer passes, full of sunshine and breath-taking scenery, gelato and delicious feasts, Lou and Nick get ever closer. But as the time for farewell creeps up on them, will they be able to say goodbye and leave their memories behind in the Italian sun, or can a summer romance last a lifetime?” #romanticescapes #italianlakes #italy #armchairtravel #travelbybook #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #triplit #tripfiction #travelfiction #destinationfiction #literarytourism #armchairtraveler #travelread #bookishlove #bookobsessed #bookishlife #bookrecommendations #bookwormlife #booknerdigans #readstagram #readingisfun #readmore #lovereadingbooks #bibliophile #bookaholic #instareads #instabook #bookgram #italianescape

LONDON / OXFORDSHIRE 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 A Complicated Matter by Anne Youngson Rose Dunbar is a daughter of mixed heritage and feels very much at home in Gibraltar. She cares for her mother who suffered life-changing damage after Rose's birth, spending her day in great pain. Rose cares for her. War on mainland Europe has broken out and Gibraltarians are being evacuated, first to Morocco and then to London where Rose, her mother and other members of the community are given lodging in a hotel. The sense of London during the war years is vibrantly brought to life in the careful and thoughtful hands of this author. Rose's heritage means that she is not a shoe-in into London life, even though she is a dual national; much of the story is centred around her finding her place and skills, and understanding the 'new' culture in which she finds herself. She is a quiet and unassuming person, who is naturally drawn to books - she finds access to novels to while away the hours, especially in the bomb shelters. Once her circumstances change, she heads for a job based in Oxfordshire, where she is to work as a secretary to Major Inchbold, an archly plain speaking man who is without his sight. Here she continues to learn more about English society and how she can assimilate and grow as a young woman. This is a rich and slow-paced novel that takes its time to explore the character of Rose in her context of time and place. It can feel quite languorous at times but the quality of prose can make this feel as familiar and comfortable as a pair of well-worn slippers. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #england #anneyoungson #acomplicatedmatter

#jamesjoyce #ulysses #dublin #ireland #irelandtravel #irish #englishteacher #englishliterature #literature #literarytourism

TELEMARK / OSLO 🇳🇴 Toxic by Helga Flatland TR: Matt Bagguley Coming 23 May 2024 I am a fan of this author's writing and the translator Matt Bagguley does an excellent job of bringing her words to an English-speaking audience. Her style flows, and her words, as she puts them together, are gratifying to read. The grip of the 2020 pandemic is tightening across Norway, and that forms the background drumbeat as two stories unfold and come together. The novel opens in Telemark with Johs and Andres, two young men who are running their farm, which has been in the family for a good four centuries. There is a real sense of practised activity, as the cows are milked, the machines are set to work and the overall smooth running of operations is their priority. They are not much bothered by coronavirus, given their remote location. Johs and Andres hunker down, alongside their mother and let the hysteria wash over them. Fiddle playing, storytelling and starkly delineated characters add to the sense of growing, perturbing unease. In Oslo Mathilde is teaching Norwegian to the older year groups at school and after a misjudged liaison, she finds herself without a job. It so happens that she settles upon the somewhat dilapidated grandparents' home at the farm - which is up for rental - to spend her time writing a novel. Her biological mother is herself a novelist and now perhaps is the time to try her hand at writing. The story is like a fleshed-out short story (a good thing) where women are the sirens that underpin society's ills. And here is a modern day fable of behaviour, dark and destructive, with all the components, mirroring the folktales of yore (which the farming brothers are wont to share). A well written and quick read. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #toxic #helgaflatland #norway

WHITSTABLE 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Murder at the Allotment by Julie Wassmer Coming 14 May 2024 Whitstable: “…the town had never adopted the more garish styles of nearby Margate or Herne Bay, remaining quintessentially a fishing town, which was still part of its abiding charm, especially with tourists…” Murder At The Allotment is already no.10 in the Whitstable Pearl Mystery series and this can be read as a standalone. Pearl – our inimitable investigator and “magnate for cadavers” – soon feels like a familiar figure to the reader as the novel opens, set amongst her family and friends and in the heart of her community. She still runs her restaurant and is engaged to McGuire. In this novel, a right kerfuffle amongst the kale plants is building in the allotments at Prospect Field, fired by DFLs (people who descend on the town from London – “Down From London”) and Pearl’s investigative nose starts to twitch. When a body is found, she has knows what she has to do. Whitstable, its history and character are beautifully brought to life in this series, perfect for literary tourism. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #Juliewassmer #whitstable #murderattheallotment Published by @littlebrown (Constable imprint)

PARIS – FRANCE 🇫🇷 This is the story of Henriette Theodora Markovitch, who renamed herself Dora Maar. The novel opens in 1913 when Dora was about 7 years old, living in Buenos Aires with her parents. It moves through her early life and then focusses on her relationship with Pablo Picasso in her adult years, from 1935 onwards, when she determinedly caught his eye in the restaurant frequented by artists in Paris, the Deux Magots. Already she had found a way to attract his gaze by engaging in public self harm and this, of course, set the tenet for their relationship. The main thrust of the book is her on/off relationship with the great man himself. Lurking in the background are Marie-Thérèse, the mother of his young child and Olga, his wife and mother to his older child, Paulo, all of whom continue to feature in his life. The warning signs are there in the early months, that he is not a devoted partner, but that he is a passionate and all-consuming man who juggles the women in his life to satisfy his own creative ends. Dora is in thrall to the man, avidly seeking ensnarement and, well, his affection. She tries to manage his infidelities and his often dismissive – abusive – attitude towards her, in order to maintain her position in his life – almost at any cost….. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #louisatreger #paris #france #theparismuse #pablopicasso #doramaar Published by @bloomsburypublishing

And I loved tagging along with the ladies in A FRENCH ADVENTURE as they explored Antibes, Monaco and Tourettes-sur-Loup! ***** “It’s early summer on the French Riviera when Vivienne Wilson arrives for a one-woman writers’ retreat after her philandering husband informs her that their 30-year marriage is over. There to collect the shell-shocked Vivienne is recently widowed Maxine Zonszain, who is struggling to come to terms with her empty life following the sudden death of her husband. Florist extraordinaire, Olivia Murray, shares the Villa that Vivienne is renting. She’s pretty content with life - but longs to meet ‘The One’. Life under the summer sun in Antibes becomes a challenging time for all three women. Secrets are shared, problems are halved as they forge new and unexpected friendships and embark on new adventures. As I walked along Baku’s most frequented tourist street, I saw this imposing sculpture of Nizami Ganjavi, a 12th-century poet who is celebrated as the foremost literary figure in Azerbaijan. The street, bearing his name, also features sculptures of other eminent writers and scholars, reflecting the deep connection of the people of this country to their rich cultural and literary heritage. These public tributes remind us of how diverse cultural voices enrich and unite a society, contrasting sharply with regions where such expressions are restricted. #baku #azerbaijan🇦🇿 #nizamiganjavi #poetry #culturalheritage #literarytourism #sculptures #art #history #diversity #travel #explore #placestovisit

I simply can’t resist buying new books, especially ones about books and set in France! THE BORDEAUX BOOK CLUB by Gillian Harvey @gillplusfive ***** “When Leah and her husband moved to France, it was with the dream of becoming self-sufficient. But in truth, it’s not the ‘good life’ she’d imagined, as three hours of digging barely yield a single straggly carrot. Worse, her teenage daughter is acting up, and her husband seems to find every strange excuse under the hot French sun to disappear. So when her friend entreats her to join the new bookclub she’s forming, Leah decides it’s something she will do for herself. The chance to make new friends, to drink a few glasses of wine, and to escape into stories that take her miles away from the life she’d thought would be her own happy-ever-after. But the book club is a strange group of misfits. There’s prickly Grace, who lives alone and seems to know everybody and like no-one. Buttoned-up Monica, who says her husband is away and appears to be parenting her baby all alone. Handsome builder George, who has barely read a book before. And Alfie – who is a full two decades younger than everyone else, and is hiding a devastating secret… As the stories they read begin to bring the new friends closer together, Leah is about to discover that happy-ever-afters don’t always look how you expect them to…” #newbook #primereading #france #bordeaux #armchair travel #travelbybook #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #triplit #tripfiction #travelfiction #destinationfiction #literarytourism #armchairtraveler #travelread #bookishlove #bookobsessed #bookishlife #bookrecommendations #bookwormlife #booknerdigans #readstagram #readingisfun #readmore #lovereadingbooks #bibliophile #bookaholic #instareads #instabook #bookgram

ITALY 🇮🇹 The Hero's Way: Walking with Garibaldi from Rome to Ravenna by Tim Parks In the summer of 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Italy's legendary revolutionary hero, fled Rome and led 4,000 of his men hundreds of miles through Umbria and Tuscany, then across the Apennines, Italy's mountainous spine, toward the refuge of the Venetian Republic. After thirty-two exhausting days of skirmishes and adventures, only 250 survivors reached the Adriatic coast. Tim Parks follows in Garibaldi’s footsteps in 2019, just a few months before the global pandemic (it must have been wonderful/frustrating to have been putting the finishing touches to this travelogue when the world was in lockdown). Accompanying him on this journey is his then partner Eleanora, now wife, and the two seem to co-exist in relaxed companionship as the kilometres pass. 150 plus years separate the two journeys, each taken under very different circumstances, and the author blends the past and present with aplomb, reflecting on what he sees now, and how to interpret his experiences with a historic slant. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #travelogue #timparks #theherosway Published by @harvillsecker

Did you know Istanbul was the most visited city in the world in 2023? Having lived here for nearly 15 years I’m not surprised. There’s so much for tourists to see and do that one trip won’t be enough. Everywhere you look there’s something going on, sometimes familiar but more often than not, quite different to what you’re used to back home so I know many of you leave with even more questions about daily life than you had before you came. If that’s you (or even if you’re in the planning stages of your trip), I know you’ll find the answers and more, in my three essay collections (one of them out in Turkish too), memoir and alternative guide to Istanbul. MISSISSIPPI 🇺🇸 Mississippi Solo by Eddy L Harris. Introduced by Adam Weymouth. In the 1980s, Eddy in his 30s decides - after what seems like a lifelong ambition - to take a canoe and travel from Minnesota to The Gulf of Mexico along the Mississippi. His friends urge caution (actually mock him for wanting to do this), not in the least denting his determination. He is loaned a canoe for the purpose and off he goes, although by his own acknowledgement he is "no expert in a canoe". The depth of the river - surprisingly - ranges from just a few feet below the surface to about two feet in depth at New Orleans, his end point. He travels through various States as he heads further south, recording his feelings and encounters, and the highs and lows of river life. He determines not to make the colour of his skin an issue and acknowledges that "People in this country only need a chance and an excuse to be kind, and they respond." Yet in Wisconsin he has a run-in with awful racism when he handles an intervention in a clever way, moving from contempt to almost compassion. This is a wonderful story of pluck and determination. 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #eddyLharris #mississippisolo Published by @johnmurrays

THAILAND (and London) 🇹🇭 Her Last Summer by Emily Freud You know from the book cover that there is going to be a good setting involved in the story. Cassidy (Cass) is a documentary maker who has just completed “Missing” to much acclaim, the original perpetrator cleared of the crime and a new man has been jailed. She is then contacted by Luke, who, in 2002 was backpacking with his girlfriend, Mari, in Thailand and they both went missing from a guided trail in the jungles around Chiang Mai. That was 20 years ago. He was eventually found in a terrible state but she simply disappeared. Luke was never formally charged with any crime but popular opinion has him marked as guilty of her death. Cass is over the moon that he should have come to her to tell his side of the story and she starts on the groundwork. Partway through filming, her boss asks her to take Luke back to Thailand and follow in his original footsteps, retracing events and emotions. She flies out with a team, and from Bangkok they head to Ko Pha Ngan and up to the North, all the while filming Luke as he ponders and re-engages with the history of his former trip. His story is that Mari was attacked by someone living wild in the jungle and simply disappeared. For Cass, initially, the jury is out and she dithers, unsure whether he is a true victim in all this or whether he has sociopathic traits and is just very good at pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #destinationthriller #herlastsummer #emilyfreud #thailand Published by @quercusbooks

TOKYO (London and South Africa) 🇯🇵 Takeout Sushi by Christopher Green Coming 2 May 2024 If there’s any justice at all, these small stories will be BIG! Takeout Sushi by Christopher Green is a book written by an outsider to Japan who is also an insider. Green has lived there for many years, married, had a family and hence assimilated himself into the culture. As an outsider myself, I find the characters and the setting quite captivating. I wouldn’t usually seek out books in the short-story format but I’m so glad I had the opportunity of reading this one. It’s a selection of the finest writing, each story exquisite in and of itself, and together they’re an absolute treat. Green’s writing is beautiful: it’s just concise enough to make the stories tense and involving but it contains fascinating detail that evokes a strong sense of place. The stories’ settings vary from domestic dilemmas to dystopian office dramas, with the angst ramped up accordingly. Placing the stories in Japan increases the importance of certain types of behaviours matching society’s expectations, which potentially amplifies the embarrassment of these faux pas many times over. The characters find themselves in awkward situations, where they must face the consequences of their actions. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio [book cover set against a print by of Japanese Lanterns by Daniel ]Kelly 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #takeoutsushi #shortstories #christophergreen Published by @neemtreepress

WOMAN ON FIRE - history, art and intrigue! ***** “After talking her way into a job with Dan Mansfield, the leading investigative reporter in Chicago, rising young journalist Jules Roth is given an unusual—and very secret—assignment. Dan needs her to locate a painting stolen by the Nazis more than 75 years earlier: legendary Expressionist artist Ernst Engel’s most famous work, Woman on Fire. World-renowned shoe designer Ellis Baum wants this portrait of a beautiful, mysterious woman for deeply personal reasons, and has enlisted Dan’s help to find it. But Jules doesn’t have much time; the famous designer is dying. Meanwhile, in Europe, provocative and powerful Margaux de Laurent also searches for the painting. Heir to her art collector family’s millions, Margaux is a cunning gallerist who gets everything she wants. The only thing standing in her way is Jules. Yet the passionate and determined Jules has unexpected resources of her own, including Adam Baum, Ellis’s grandson. A recovering addict and brilliant artist in his own right, Adam was once in Margaux’s clutches. He knows how ruthless she is, and he’ll do anything to help Jules locate the painting before Margaux gets to it first.” #art #armchairtravel #travelbybook #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #triplit #tripfiction #travelfiction #destinationfiction #literarytourism #armchairtraveler #travelread #bookishlove #bookobsessed #bookishlife #bookrecommendations #bookwormlife #booknerdigans #readstagram #readingisfun #readmore #lovereadingbooks #bibliophile #bookaholic #instareads #instabook #bookgram #bookpost #igreads #bookloversofinstagram
