CHINATOWN (1974) Dir: Roman Polanski Interp: Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston, Diane Ladd, Perry López, Darrell Zwerling, Belinda Palmer Y todo por el agua. La verdad que bien podríamos colocar está cinta en el dudoso honor de ser de las más injusticias en cuanto a premios ha sufrido. Y digo dudoso porque más influenció la mala fortuna de coincidir con esa obra maestra que fue El Padrino II. Aún con esas logró la estatuilla dorada por su guión. Y no es moco de pavo porque la historia bien lo merece. Una historia construida con genialidad absoluta y que nos sumerge en una trama de corrupción urbanística a través del desvío del agua en un año de gran sequía en Los Ángeles pero que luego te deriva a una trama más íntima que salpica el pasado de la protagonista. La narrativa es suave pero sin dejar de avanzar. Siguiendo las pautas del género mientras te engulle sin remedio y sin que puedas hacer nada en una historia atrapante. Otro de esos libretos que deberían estar tras una vitrina en el museo del guionista. La recreación de la ciudad californiana de los años 30 es exquisita y elegante. El vestuario, el peinado, los coches, la arquitectura... Todo, absolutamente todo cuidado al milímetro. Incluso su BSO, obra del maestro Jerry Goldsmith, es una suave caricia al espectador. Jack Nicholson (El honor de los Prizzi), Faye Dunaway (El coloso en llamas), John Huston (Al otro lado del viento) son los protagonistas del film y junto a ellos un buen elenco de secundarios como Diane Ladd (Alicia ya no vive aquí), Perry López (Los violentos de Kelly), Darrell Zwerling (Capricornio Uno), James Hong (Tango & Cash), Belinda Palmer (Vientos de otoño), John Hillerman (Infierno de cobardes) y Burt Young (saga Rocky). Incluso el propio Polanski hace un papel pequeño. Valoración 9,5/10. Carnosaur (1993) dir. Adam Simon & Darren Patrick Moloney A genetically manipulated dinosaur escapes a bioengineering company and wreaks havoc on a small desert town. Meanwhile, the geneticist responsible for the dinosaur plans on unleashing a lethal virus that could bring the entire planet back to the prehistoric age. I wanted to watch this to honor the late Roger Corman (although, TBF, my favorite Corman produced movie is Slumber Party Massacre II.) I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid and renting movies from Blockbuster. The Carnosaur movies were usually shown on the SciFi channel back in the day, but they tended to favor 2 and 3. This has the reputation of being a Jurassic Park rip-off, but I'll have you know that Carnosaur came out an entire month before JP! But in a crazy twist of ironic fate, the crazy scientist of this movie is Diane Ladd a.k.a Laura Dern's (Dr. Sattler of JP) mom! She plays the crazy scientist laughably well and it's just the right amount of over the top. The rest of the movie is your standard late night monster movie affair but with a giant dinosaur at its front. There's a surprisingly high body count here at 32 and some of the gore and effects are alright. This honestly felt like what if Jurassic Park took place in the town from Tremors, and it's a fun concept to see through. IIRC, I preferred the second movie as a kid and I watched the trailer and have no recollection of it, but it certainly looks to be a lot more fun! Burt Reynolds and co. struck gold in the early 1970s when they released something important about Hollywood. There weren’t a whole lot of movies made in the South for the South. They decided to test out what would happen if they made movies to fill that void. That’s what gave us Smokey and the Bandit. A few years before that, though, we got White Lightning. Gator McClusky was a convict who made a deal with the feds to get out of jail in exchange for helping them take down a corrupt sheriff in Arkansas. The sheriff just so happened to be the man behind the murder of Gator’s brother. A lot of that Burt Reynolds charm came through his portrayal of Gator. It didn’t quite have the same abundance of humour that I know Burt Reynolds movies for, but that doesn’t matter. It still had those Hal Needham stunts to boost the fun entertainment. Plus, there was a solid enough story about whiskey running and revenge. I must say I’m not used to a clean shaven Burt Reynolds, though. Quando ela resolve tomar as rédeas do seu destino, ela usa de sua criatividade para inventar objetos aparentemente sem importância, mas extremamente funcionais, como um tipo de esfregão prático e outros pequenos utensílios que até hoje usamos em nossas casas. A narrativa no qual a personagem está inserida é muito triste, seu mundo desmorona e ela se desdobra para conseguir dar conta dos problemas, e sozinha. Mas, encarando tudo com bom humor e de forma leve. As atuações estão incríveis, mais uma vez é uma excelente atuação de Jennifer Lawrence, muito segura, carregando toda a carga do seu personagem em busca de um futuro melhor. Forgive me if this review is a little snarky - someone definitely pissed in my cornflakes this morning. You might ask, “But who? You clearly live alone!” First off - ouch. No reason to come in so hot! Secondly, I suppose it’s my fault. Every night I put a bowl of cornflakes outside my door with a little sign that reads, “Please Piss in These ‘’ so it’s always a gamble. I like to take risks in life! Plain Clothes is about Nick (played by Arliss Howard), a cop who goes undercover in a high school to investigate a teacher’s murder to clear his brother;s name. The high school he attends is a weird mix of Rydell High and the school from Class of 1984, with an amazing cast of character actors. Most notably Diane Ladd as the meddling secretary who sleeps with various staff members and always has a broken wrist - excuse me while I add that image to my vision board! Regardless, this reverse Never Been Kissed just didn’t do it for me. It’s all due to a scene where a sweaty Nick reads ee cummings to his class and all of the ladies take out their ponytails and bite their chapped lips. It was gross and I hated it. And I’m not kidding about the sweatiness. In almost every close up, the actor in question looks like they just got out of a dunk tank and I wish I could jump through my screen and blot their faces! The casting director was playing fast and loose with our suspension of disbelief when they cast a 34 year old Howard as a 24 year old cop. We are then further pushed to think he could pass for a teen! Just admit you forgot what teens looked like and that you thought you could get away with it by throwing a fedora on Arliss and calling it a day. Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore is unlike any of Scorsese’s films I have seen so far and also one of his best. This captivating story of a woman having to deal with gender roles set by a male dominated society is perfectly executed and I was fully invested in the titular character’s journey from start to finish. Ellen Burstyn provides a powerhouse lead performance, Dianne Ladd is also incredible, the cinematography feels so raw and intimate and the soundtrack contains so many perfectly placed needle drops. It’s a fantastic piece of filmmaking that was fully deserving of all of its awards wins and nominations. This movie, which I've only just seen for the 1st was recommended by a regular post reader & not being of a genere, nor a theme (Speed Biking) that would normally interest or appeal to me, I almost gave it a miss. I watched the film, reluctantly with low expectations, that were well exceeded, as this film, which is not only reported to be gaining something of a cult following, this is an intelligently scripted, very made, character study: something of a 'feel good' movie but in a more subtle way, not in sickly, clichéd Hollywood style. From film maker, Donaldson. (Cadillac Man, 94, Species, 97) with excellent cinematography by #davidgribble with beautiful wide-screen shots of scenic locations in both New Zealand & the US. The movie stars #anthonyhopkins who gives absolute tour de force performance as the eccentric, ever aimable, likable, determined, backwater mechanical genius, multi speed biking record breaker #burtmunro. (1899-78) The great actor doesn't even fake a Kiwi accent, but this is 1 of, if not the best & most believable performance of his entire career. In mostly minor roles the film features many top notch character actors including: #jessicacauffiel #joehoward #chriseilliams #paulrodriguez #anniewhittle #christopherlawford #gavingrazer & #dianeladd. At 68 years of age, in 67, suffering from angina, Munro, a former speed racer, uses his limited life saving to travel to the Bonneville Salt Flats race grounds in Utah, where using he broke the land speed record, hitting a rate of 331 kmph, using a highly modified 1920 'Indian' bike. This however, is not the theme of the film. We watch as Burt travelled across the states, meeting many well drawn, colourful character along the way. Using ingenuity & charm, the aging biker overcomes, set back, after set back & eventually fulfils his dreams. Donaldson, who made a documentary about Munro back in the 80's had been working on the script for 2 decades & his many years of planning paid off. Highly recommended.
