Carnosaur (1993) dir. Adam Simon & Darren Patrick Moloney A genetically manipulated dinosaur escapes a bioengineering company and wreaks havoc on a small desert town. Meanwhile, the geneticist responsible for the dinosaur plans on unleashing a lethal virus that could bring the entire planet back to the prehistoric age. I wanted to watch this to honor the late Roger Corman (although, TBF, my favorite Corman produced movie is Slumber Party Massacre II.) I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid and renting movies from Blockbuster. The Carnosaur movies were usually shown on the SciFi channel back in the day, but they tended to favor 2 and 3. This has the reputation of being a Jurassic Park rip-off, but I'll have you know that Carnosaur came out an entire month before JP! But in a crazy twist of ironic fate, the crazy scientist of this movie is Diane Ladd a.k.a Laura Dern's (Dr. Sattler of JP) mom! She plays the crazy scientist laughably well and it's just the right amount of over the top. The rest of the movie is your standard late night monster movie affair but with a giant dinosaur at its front. There's a surprisingly high body count here at 32 and some of the gore and effects are alright. This honestly felt like what if Jurassic Park took place in the town from Tremors, and it's a fun concept to see through. IIRC, I preferred the second movie as a kid and I watched the trailer and have no recollection of it, but it certainly looks to be a lot more fun! Père Stu : Un Héros pas comme les autres / Father Stu (2022) de Rosalind ROSS - 2h04 🇺🇲 Plateforme : Netflix Stuart LONG (Mark WAHLBERG) a toujours été un sportif. Ancien joueur de football, il a un temps voulu être acteur. Il se mettra finalement à la boxe, avant de déménager en Californie pour faire décoller sa carrière de comédien. Après un grave accident de la route, il se tourne vers la religion. Il devient prêtre et décide désormais de consacrer sa vie à aider les autres... Dans ce drame inspiré d'une histoire vraie nous retrouvons donc : Mark WAHLBERG, Mel GIBSON, Teresa RUIZ, Jacki WEAVER, Malcolm McDOWELL, Winter Ave ZOLI, Cody FERN, Ned BELLAMY, Carlos LEAL ou encore Niko NICOTERA. Ce film souffre lui aussi de la maladie des biopics : trop de longueurs, et l'intrigue s'en retrouve hélas plombée. Par ailleurs, qu'on veut vous raconter quelque chose mais qu'on fait du surplace comme si on se savait pas quoi raconter. Mark WAHLBERG joue très bien et est convainquant mais je trouve qu'il n'était pas forcément le choix qu'il fallait pour un tel rôle. En effet, il interprète à merveille un héros qui chute mais j'ai eu du mal avec le passage où il devient prêtre, car je trouve que ça ne lui correspond pas. C'est comme imaginer Jack NICHOLSON ou Al PACINO en prêtre. Ce sera génial car ce sont de grands acteurs, mais ça ne vous semblera jamais cohérent. Je saluerais les prestations de ses co-stars, Teresa RUIZ, Mel GIBSON, Jacki WEAVER et Cody FERN. Au niveau de l'ambiance, les éclairages sont bien modulés et doublés d'une bonne musique assez discrète pour rythmer l'ensemble. Les costumes sont bien faits et les décors sont assez nombreux pour bien rythmer le film. De façon globale, "Father Stu" est un bon biopic que je n'irais cependant pas revoir une seconde fois. Family Switch (2023) dir. McG While attending a once in a lifetime astrological event, every member of the Walker family (including the baby and the dog!) fully swap bodies during the holiday season. This movie really skirted the line of bad movie and good movie and over much debate, Allen and I decided to post the review on both pages. The Good: Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms really carry this movie and both do so well both before and after the body swap. The kids do alright, but not nearly as good as their parents (which is to be expected). Matthias Schweighöfer carries his portion of the movie where he (sadly) has to work with an awful CGI partner 70% of the time. The Bad: A lot of cringe moments. The mom ruining her daughter's soccer career during the swap seemed unforgivable - there's a redemption but still the damage was done and her reputation I imagine was tarnished after that. The aforementioned CGI partners working with Matthias were for the dog and the baby and both were so terrible! I would have liked multiple swaps through-out the movie, but in its own way it was kind of neat to have Vice Versa and Freaky Friday in the same movie. Louis Morneau Genetically mutated bats escape the lab that bred them and the world's best zoologist and the local sheriff of the town the bats are attacking, are the only ones that can stop them. Allen wanted to watch this one for bad movie night. He thought I hadn't seen it already, but well I did :P Bats was a staple Sci-Fi Saturday movie back when Syfy was still the SciFi Channel. It's aged alright in the 24 years that its been around, but in my opinion it's pretty middle of the road. Dina Meyer and Lou Diamond Phillips are here, which made me remember that LDP had a whole small horror movie kick starting around here. This is pre-Saw for Dina and she really pulls off the blonde hair well. Had there been a Resident Evil movie of the 90s, she would have made a nice Jill. As I said, the movie is rather middle of the road. It's pretty campy both in premise and execution and chockfull of bad clichéd lines. The bat attacks are usually quick cuts and flashing edits with characters discovering a mutilated corpse. The bats themselves remind me of the little demon monsters from The Gate if they had wings. Le Contrat / The Contract (2006) de Bruce BERESFORD - 1h36 🇺🇸🇩🇪 Ray (John CUSACK), entraineur de baseball dans un lycée par en randonnée avec son fils Chris (Jamie ANSEESON), pour renouer avec lui, car il a été surpris en train de fumer de la marijuana. Lorsque Frank CARDEN (Morgan FREEMAN), ancien de la CIA et dangereux tueur à gage, est transféré de prison ; ses associés l'interceptent mais il la voiture de police fait une chute à travers la forêt. Lorsque leurs chemins se croisent, un jeu du chat et de la souris commence... Dans ce thriller d'action, on retrouve CUSACK, FREEMAN et ANDERSON ; soutenus par Megan DODDS, Corey JOHNSON, Alice KRIGE, Jonathan HYDE, Ned BELLAMY ou encore Bill SMITROVICH. C'est un film efficace où l'on retrouve un bon rythme malgré quelques moments de plats lorsque l'on traverse certains décors. On appréciera particulièrement ceux-ci, prenant place en majorité en pleine nature. Étrangement, on retrouve même du comique de répétition (sûrement involontaire) lors des scènes d'action incluant JOHNSON, ce qui rend la chose amusante et coupe un peu du cadre sérieux. La musique est omniprésente mais ne prend pas trop la place (je n'ai hélas rien trouvé sur Internet pour vous le partager), et les costumes sont variés. On regrettera ici le manque d'exploitation de certains antagonistes, ce qui aurait pu donner un peu plus de consistance à ce film un peu court. Dans l'ensemble, "Le Contrat" est un bon série B qui vous divertira à chaque visionnage. À voir et à revoir ! Saw (2004) dir. James Wan Two men wake up in a grimy bathroom with their feet chained to the wall. As their memory slowly comes back to them, they realize that they are pawns in a twisted serial killer's deadly game. With Saw X coming out at the end of the month, I decided that I was going to have myself a Saw marathon today. Honestly, it's been a long time since I've last seen most of the Saw movies. Saw is one of the no franchises for Allen, the self-mutilation is too much for him - so this has gone unwatched for some time. I do love the first movie and how simple everything is. You don't even get a real hint about the big world beyond the walls of that small bathroom, but that just makes the sequels something to get excited about. This came out when I was in middle school and sadly, both my best friend Jaren and I got the ending spoiled before hand and man I really wish we didn't. The jaw drop of the ending's Jigsaw reveal would have been a great memory to have and look back on. This is a fairly generic tv-movie starring Jack Scalia who’s like a bargain bin Richard Gere that never made it big. I like him but that’s essentially what he is. The plot is pretty standard. A sap gets in over his head with a femme fatale and has to get out of trouble. The cast is good but the film never reaches above ok. It’s competent tv filler. Nothing more. Winter Bloody Winter pt. 1 . Among the wintery horror adventures, “Wind Chill” might not deserve a place near the top, but despite being gift wrapped in a lackluster script, it holds a few charms inside. And it’s led by Emily Blunt, therefore it’s an adventure worth the risk. . The girl (Emily Blunt) just finished her last college lecture before the Christmas holidays, and needs a ride to get to her far-away home. Luckily, she finds another student offering a ride to the exact town. The girl and the guy (Ashton Holmes) set out on a road trip which will leave them stranded in a snowy cold night, at a place where people have died, and now haunt this desolate stretch of forest road… . “Wind Chill” establishes and upkeeps a nice, low-key spookily moody winter atmosphere, and beautiful views of snow, making it a rather appropriate choice for a cozy December evening in bed under duvet and with a hot cup of whatever you enjoy. The plot plus the general vibe made me reminisce a lot about one of my favorite holiday horror movie – “Dead End” (a post coming later this month), which beats “Wind Chill” with more effective story-telling and characters. Nonetheless, “Wind Chill” presses more on the atmosphere and appears more aesthetically polished. Plot-wise, it goes from quite intriguing to too apparent and eventually reasonably underwhelming, but the snow, the mood, the production design, and Emily Blunt will do their best to keep you entertained in that special, chilly seasonal way. . Even after seeing “Wind Chill” for the 3rd time, I feel generous and forgiving with it, because I’m a sucker for holiday horror movies, and, after years of catching new ones every December, I conclude there are not enough good ones there… My rating: 7/10.
