I've never seen such erratic joy emanate from someone performing. Not like that anyway. It was both childlike and insane. I quickly taught myself to play "Blue Skies" on the ukulele, and went out searching for more of his work where I would come to learn "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" and "Sitting on Top of the World." As with my previous post... here I am digging up the past! Because African Americans were not allowed on film unless they were maids, buffoons or slaves, cosmetics weren't seen as necessary, as Blacks were an afterthought. (Sound familiar?.... but I digress). In the 1940's more people of color began to appear on screen, thus Max Factor created this color, Negro #1 😲😲. (I'm gasping and sighing loudly!) Negro #1, Negro #2 & Negro #3 were blanket tones made for dark skinned performers. This tone is SO BROWN/GREY! I am really unsure who exactly would've naturally matched it. These were special order items as they were not in Max Factors "regular" lineup. Although Max Factor was a pioneering genius, the beast of old Hollywood in conjunction with our country's views of Blacks, made this normal and unquestioned behavior. I am somewhat of a makeup historian. It always amazes me how people of African descent were categorized within the cosmetic history. I always look for historic pieces and cosmetics that show our history. This is a pancake base called "BLACK (MINSTREL)". It was a color used by White entertainers, such as Al Jolson, Judy Garland and even Shirley Temple to mimic what the White folks of the time (1830's - 1960's) believed were the expressions and movement of African people. This is what was used for what is now called "BLACK FACE." Minstrelsy was a form of "entertainment" that was originally enacted to demonstrate the believed yearnings for Slaves to return to their masters and slavery. It portrayed happy Slaves, eating chicken, watermelon, and dancing for their masters & mistresses. Looking back at this time of performance history can be very painful to consume. As artists, knowing our cosmetic and entertainment history is a must. It allows us to understand the pathology of the disease known as Cosmetic Racism. Thank God we are at a time in history where many changes for diversity and inclusion are being spearheaded, but there is certainly a long road ahead. I owe honor to the beautiful Black women who walked before me and fought through the limited supply of self care products for them. They lived in a time of total exclusion. We still live in its' residue. We must NEVER forget! Does anyone have a random film that they either used to watch a lot or still watch, purely because of someone else's influence? I just remembered watching The Jolson Story (1946) far too many times as a young child because my grandad loved Al Jolson! He had the film on VHS and I knew all the songs by heart and had a slight crush on Larry Parkes (the shame). I distinctly recall the scene in the second photo, where Al goes to his girlfriend's parents' house for lunch and loads his plate with horseradish. Stan Laurel is ready to reel them in… Founded in 1898 and still active, the Tuna Club of Avalon was the world’s first big game sport fishing organization. Early Hollywood celebrities were no strangers to the recreational activities available in Southern California. In addition to Laurel, other Tinseltown names that once popped up on the club membership list include John Barrymore, Charlie Chaplin, Bing Crosby (Photo 6), Cecil B. DeMille, Al Jolson, Tom Mix and Hal Roach. As a guest, future British Prime Minister Winston Churchill reportedly “stunned club members” by landing a 188-lb (or was it 125-lb?) marlin on September 22, 1929… The photoshopped image of Churchill and Chaplin seen in Photo 3 was taken just two days later during Churchill’s visit to the set of Chaplin’s CITY LIGHTS. Trivia Tidbit: The clubhouse doubled as the “Albacore Club” in the film CHINATOWN (1974). It was there that the characters played by Jack Nicholson and John Huston huddled for a chat. (I would be willing to bet that the adventurous Huston was once a Tuna Club member.) Note: Unlike Bing Crosby, seen here in 1933, most big fame fishermen today embrace “catch & release” as a more sustainable fishing strategy. As I understand it, California game fish populations are monitored and subject to regulations by the NOAA and the Western Pacific Fishery Management Council. From October 1947, through May 1949, Al Jolson, along with pianist Oscar Levant, welcomed a variety of guests from the stage, screen, and radio to seventy-one broadcasts of the program. Al is seen here with singer Melina Miller. However, Jolson was not impressed by her singing talent (she came to the radio show because she was the producer's girlfriend). When I drove my daughter to school this morning I made her listen to Al Jolson Deccas via Spotify. Jolie from outer space to our car. Was a treat for me, probably not so much for her. I mentioned that we were probably the only people in the world listening to “My Mammy” at that moment and she took a look on Spotify and said that at least one million other people on Spotify have enjoyed it as well. Today let’s highlight some of the most unusual and unique hand and foot prints you can find in front of the Grauman’s (okay, TCL) Chinese Theatre! Part One: 1) Donald Duck’s webbed feet made quite the splash! 2) C-3PO, Darth Vader and that near sighted scrap pile R2D2 cemented their prints in 1977. 3) Roy Rogers left hand, foot and gun imprints along with Trigger’s horseshoe prints. 4) Billy Crystal left a monster of a print as he included his Monsters Inc character Mike Wazowaski’s foot print alongside his own. 5) Whoopi Goldberg let her hair down for her prints and included her braids with the traditional prints. 6) Joe E. Brown famously cemented his famous wide mouth alongside his prints. 7) Quentin Tarantino left a “f^*k you” message by wearing replicas of the infamous sneakers Uma Thurman wore in the film “Kill Bill”. 8) Sonny Boy Al Jolson got down on his knees to sing and leave his prints at Grauman’s. 9) Three time Olympic Champion Sonja Henie left three prints: hands, feet and her skates. 10) Leo the MGM lion roared into Grauman’s and left a purrrfect pair paw prints 🐾
On October 4, 1950, while Bing was on the way from Pebble Beach to Los Angeles, he was stopped by the highway patrol. He was told that his father had a heart attack at his home in Toluca Lake. Bing rushed there, but he didn't arrive in time to be with his father - Harry Lowe Crosby had died 40 minutes before Bing arrived. He was 79 years old. Throughout the year, he had been feeling increasingly unwell because of his arteriosclerosis. Bing let his pre-recorded season-opening broadcast planned for that day be postponed for a week out of respect to his father. Two days later, a Rosary, and, on October 7, a requiem mass were held. Bing's father was buried at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Bing's break from work due to the death was concluded with a family dinner gathering. Bing's mother Catherine and all her children, and their respective spouses and their own children were all present. The oldest Crosby brother, Larry, later wrote an essay for the family in which he described that beautiful evening (sl.9-10). After dinner, Bing, Dixie and the boys took mother Catherine to their Pebble Beach home so she didn't have to be alone. Work continued for Bing in San Francisco with the continuing taping of his radio show. On October 24, Bing's childhood idol Al Jolson was supposed to return once again to record another of his guest spots. However, on October 23, he unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack. Radio recording work continued through October and November. Whike the short Minute Maid record shows ended, the Chesterfield program continued. Bing discovered a new guest for his show after seeing Toni Arden perform on stage and asking her to come to his show. Other guests during that period included Ella Fitzgerald, Dick Powell, and Dorothy Kirsten. On November 25, for the first time, Bing recorded a Christmas show with his entire family, including Dixie, who made her first and last professional appearance after 1935 (sl.1-5). The rumors of a strained relationship from earlier that year, when Bing was in Europe, were finally put to rest. Gary would remember later how nervous his mother was even about Bing asking her to join him for the broadcast (sl. 7-8).
