While Bing was still working and golfing in Palm Springs on March 1, 1952, his brother Everett introduced Bing Crosby Ice Cream, an own (vanilla) ice cream brand, through Bing Crosby Enterprises (which had by now become the biggest TV producer in the US) Bing's name and face were licensed for use in advertising. Just a few months prior, in late 1951, Bing's Things Inc., a merchandise company, had been launched. Thus, lots of Crosby merchandise items were on the market in 1952. On March 2, Bing participated in the taping of a Bob Hope radio show which was organized in conjuction with a benefit show for the Sister Kenny Foundation with Jack Benny and Phil Harris. The following day, Bing drove to San Bernardino for his annual visit of the Pittsburgh Pirates' spring training. He was filmed and photographed talking to Ralph Kiner and working out a bit with the team. Afterwards, he returned to Palm Springs. His wife Dixie and their son Lindsay were possibly still staying there together with him. Having recorded a last radio show with James Stewart, Bing took Lindsay with him to the City of Burbank Municipal Stadium to watch a spring training game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Browns. By mid March, Bing was on vacation on his Spring Creek ranch (near Elko). Bing and the ranch workers were struggling with heavy snowfall, which covered the haystacks and also had a portion of his cattle "stranded because they could not be reached by accessible roads". Bing left the ranch and arrived in San Francisco on March 18 to continue radio work - a show was taped at the US Naval Training Station at Treasure Island. In the meantime, the Johnny Mercer - Hoagy Carmichael song from Here Comes the Groom, In the Cool of the Evening, won the Best Song Oscar. On March 28, Bing's son Gary came from Stanford University to San Francisco to join his father on an episode of his show. Years later, Gary would complain about his embarrassment about corny dialogue and an alleged public mention of how he "almost flanked" out of college - based on the version that was broadcast, this doesn't seem quite accurate.

Many of you already know the history of the Travalena’s and #lasvegas, but my father, #fredtravalena is no longer a household name so most have no clue. Being in Vegas always becomes a time of remembrance. This place is not what it used to be. @fred_travalena and I would visit often as our dad would perform 6 days a week as a headliner at the Desert Inn, Riviera, Ceasars Palace, Ballys, Stardust and the Sands. The @fontainebleaulasvegas has photos of #oldvegas every where and I love that they are trying to keep that classy time alive. My dad would always want to grab breakfast at the lobby “coffee shop.” I am the exact same way. Certainly miss my dad and miss those days. #stayclassy #lasvegasstrip #fontainebleau #sinatra #sammydavis #bobhope #headliners #vegas

Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in blooper outtakes from "Road to Hong Kong" (1962), filmed at Shepperton studious in England in summer and early fall 1961. It was during this time that Bing and Bob grew close and became intimate friends - for two months, the two and their families lived together at a rented home while making this picture. Before that, their relationship had been mostly purely professional. Apart from their mutual love for golf, they had few common interests and two completely different lifestyles and quite different private lives, which is one of the factors that explains why it took so long to get closer. The outtakes above feature laughter from a TV studio audience over the original sound - these takes survive thanks to them having been shown during one of Bob's 1962 TV specials. In slides 7-10, you can watch the versions of the corresponding scenes as they were presented in the final cut. Also note the different angles and the dialogue that didn't make it into the film. What's your favorite blooper?👇🏼✍️🏼

Oscar 2024: Oscar Legend. Bob Hope often famously quipped that he was waiting for his Oscar. Although he was never nominated for a film performance, he didn’t need one. One of the biggest stars in Hollywood for three decades on screen, and the Academy’s greatest ceremony host - he hosted receive a record 19 times - he received five Honorary Awards in 1940, 1944, 1952, 1965 and a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1959. Perhaps his 1952 award citation for “his contribution to the laughter of the world, his service to the motion picture industry, and his devotion to the American premise”, best summed up the legendary career of this Hollywood icon. #bobhope #bingcrosby #dorothylamour #vintage #specialoscar #comedian #paramountpictures #janerussell #mc #oscars #wwii #oscarwinner #academyawards #classact #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #icon #moviequotes #1940 #goldenageofhollywood #cinephilecommunity #cinephile #cine #film #filme #peliculas

With the end of his Pro-Am golf tournament in mid January 1952, Bing returned home to Los Angeles (he had put up his Pebble Beach home for sale in the fall of the previous year). In LA, the pre-taping of his radio shows continued with guests including Bob Burns (who had been Bing’s comic sidekick on the Kraft Music Hall program), Fred Astaire, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, the Mills Brothers, the Bell Sisters (aged 16 and 11; the two were quite popular in the early 1950s; slides 7-8), and his brother Bob and niece Cathy. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart guested on Bing's radio show two times, in early and late February respectively. The second time, taped on February 27, "Miss Kangaroo" of Australia, Loretta North, presented Bing with a baby kangaroo: over 500,000 members of the Australian Youth Association selected Bing as their favorite singer. After the show, Bing, Bogie and Bacall were photographed with the kangaroo. Besides his own radio show, Bing did some work for a show in honor of Eddie Cantor's birthday, a program for New York Catholic Charities, and as guest host on Walter Winchell Time. In early February, Bing had a 5-day break - he went to Palm Springs to participate in the Thunderbird Country Club four-ball match-play championship. Although he and his partner lost in the first round, Bing stayed to play golf with Bob Hope and Ben Hogan at the club. Bing had taken Dixie and their youngest son Lindsay with him on the golf trip. They all stayed together at Firecliff Lodge in Palm Desert. After his return from Palm Springs, Bing resumed his commercial recording sessions. At four of them, scattered through the rest of February, Bing recorded songs from Just for You (including the beautiful "A Flight of Fancy" & an Andrews Sisters session) and Irish songs. Some jazzy performamces from his radio show were mastered to be released commercially, including It Had to Be You (with Red Nichols on cornet). On February 29, Bing returned to Palm Springs to play in the Founder's Day Championship at Tamarisk Country Club. Many of his pals played, too, including Bob Hope, Phil Harris, Groucho and Harpo Marx and Pittsburgh Pirates player Ralph Kiner.

Bob Hope was a British-born, American immigrant born on May 29, 1903, and died on July 27, 2003. This comedian was instrumental in keeping American troops entertained overseas throughout his career. He dedicated his life to U.S. troops in areas of conflict that other entertainers did not dare venture to. He worked on Broadway, in radio and feature films. Hope was the star of his own TV show in the 1950s with NBC. Later in his career he won an Emmy in 1966 for one of his Christmas specials. He started entertaining troops in 1941 and entertained Marines, soldiers and sailors in the Pacific throughout WWII. It wasn’t all fun and games, when forward deployed, active duty troops see the worst side of humanity. Hope would go out of his way to accommodate troops who missed his show because they were out on a mission or on duty. He would do one man shows and arrived unannounced due to security concerns. Bob Hope was also a humanitarian that advocated for the release of POWs held by the North Vietnamese. Troops would write to him to negotiate their release on their behalf and its alleged Hope would sometimes be successful in brokering an agreement. On Oct. 29, 1997, he became the first American designated by Congress as an ‘Honorary Veteran of the United States Armed Forces.’ Bob Hope’s career stretched almost 80 years and he lifted the spirits of troops across three generations of war fighters. He took an active role in entertaining our troops in Vietnam and did everything in his power to aid them. He was known for getting as close to the fighting as possible, in fact, in some of his recorded shows you can hear combat in the background. The airport in Burbank, California is named after Bob Hope and so are other roads, buildings — and even a Navy ship. Bob Hope was important to the war effort in Vietnam and gave the troops…hope. Among the metals he received are the Congressional Gold Medal, Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Air Force Order of the Sword, Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great, and Pontifical Equestrian Order of Saint Sylvester Pope and Martyr.

Bing and Gary Cooper visiting each other during movie work through the years. Bing and Gary became friends in 1930, when Bing was a regular solo performer at the Cocoanut Grove. He referred to Gary as "one of my best friends" and named his oldest son after him. Bing would often call Gary Cooper "Coop". The two were connected through their common interests, which included fishing and hunting. In their profession on screen, both have been compared for the absolutely natural and effortless quality in their acting. For several years, both were simultaneously among the annual top 10 list of box office draws. According to estimated ticket sales, they also both occupy a spot in the top 10 list of the biggest box office stars of the 20th century (Bing at 3rd place with 1,077,900,000 sold tickets; Gary at 7th place with 878,600,000). 📸 1) Blue Skies (1946) 2) Top o' the Morning (1949) 3)The Emperor Waltz (1948); with Billy Wilder 4) Variety Girl (1947); the only film Bing and Gary both formally starred in 5) Sing You Sinners (1938); with Fred MacMurray 6)-7) Anything Goes (1936); with Fred MacMurray and Ethel Merman; Gary in costume for Peter Ibbetson (1935) 8) Peter Ibbetson (1935) 9) Rhythm on the Range (1936) 10) The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935); Bing dressed for Here Is My Heart (1934)

As the filming of "Just for You" was coming to an end, on December 17, 1951, Bing went to Veterans Administration Hospital to join Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra for the annual Long Beach Press-Telegram Christmas show for the patients there. One hour of the 3-hour-concert was scripted and taped to be broadcast as the Bob Hope Show on Christmas. The rest was more informal and ad-libbed, and it was this part that was singled out as the best. Before the show, Bing, Frank and Bob had personally visited the patients at the different hospital wards. The following day, Bing attended the Hollywood Women’s Press Club luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel, dressed as Santa Claus. He was presented with a Golden Apple award for having been "the most cooperative actor" of the year. Ironically, just a few years prior, the club had deemed Bing a "hopeless case". At the event, Bing was photographed with Anne Baxter, William Holden and others. On December 19, Bing made his last two commercial recordings of 1951, Isle of Innisfree and At Last, At Last. Until the end of the year, Bing continued taping his own radio show, and had a few guest spots on other programs, including The Joyful Hour and Kate Smith's show. Leading a happy life at home, only Bing's and Dixie's health caused concerns. On December 31, Bing entered hospital for a checkup, again connected to his painful kidney stones. Bing, having been discharged from the hospital on January 4, 1952, wrote a $45 check for a nurse working there. Roughly in the previous two months, Dixie was quickly losing weight, while her tummy became bloated. Although she executed her last will in November, it was not clear what exactly the illness was that caused her symptoms. After his hospital stay, Bing didn't strain himself for a week. His annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament took place in mid January without him playing, but he traveled there as the organizer. Many celebrities played, but the tournament had to be shortened due to bad weather. During the stay up there, Bing taped radio shows with Bob Hope at Fort Ord. Also, Bob, Bing, and his friends Red Nichols and Hoagy Carmichael entertained at architect Bob Stanton's house.

Light The Lights Allow the quickening Feel excitement as a compass Only through trial Can we emerge triumphant Choose growing pain Over stagnant resignation Get into practicing The process of the ancients Imagine there was nothing Before this blinding now And the director is shouting That we’ve started the show You’re on! Let’s go! This ain’t a rehearsal This is really happening There’s no reimbursal I can’t take all the fallen moments From channel hopping to bad affairs And get a refund of time But I can trade in these components Of shame, guilt, and despair Because they’re no longer mine Turn off the recordings The programmed mind The things I choose to lose Reveal the things I need to find I wrote this in the declarative In a bumper-sticker way To create a narrative That helps me in this play To rewrite the script I was cast into at birth The genetic code decrypted Into affirmations of self-worth Cue the band, light the lights Accept success is certain Hope is in the house tonight Let rise the spot-lit curtain! ©Lach 2024 Please join me at: www.lach.bandcamp.com. Paramount Stars on Parade. (1936-1939) The other half of Bob Hope’s signature tune “Thanks for the Memory” was a lovely singer-pianist who put family first. Shirley Ross (1913-1975) was already a movie veteran when she was teamed with Hope for the musical highlight of “The Big Broadcast of 1938.” Nebraskan born but growing up in Hollywood, a talented pianist she was playing on radio by her teens, then became a band singer in nightspots in LA. Signed by MGM, Ross featured in a string of small roles often singing a song as in “Manhattan Melodrama” with an early version of what later became the standard “Blue Moon” or in “San Francisco.” Loaned to Paramount for her first lead in “The Big Broadcast of 1937” they kept her. Opposite Crosby in the smash “Waikiki Wedding” they introduced together the standard “Blue Hawaii.” Back for “The Big Broadcast of 1938” and teamed this time with Hope they introduced “Thanks for the Memory” and Oscar winning Best Song. Reunited for “Thanks for the Memory” with Hope they introduced another standard “Two Sleepy People.” While Paramount were already building Hope with the more popular Raye and fortuitously with Crosby and Lamour, for Ross apart from the minor “Some Like It Hot”, as the second lead with Crosby in “Paris Honeymoon” and MacMurray in “Cafe Society” they had lost interest. Broadway and another hit “It Never Entered My Mind” from “Higher and Higher” and with her movie career stalled, the serious illness of her first husband changed her priorities. She said years later “When I look at my two sons and see how handsome they’ve grown, I don’t regret for a minute quitting show business to devote myself to them.” Occasionally performing in Europe and for the troops with Hope a lifelong friend, even an offer from Loessor to star in the road company of “Guys and Dolls” did not bring her back. She said, “It’s tough enough being an adult, but growing up is a stinkin’ job, and kids need all the help they can get. I’ve never been sorry I made the decision. One of these days, I’ll make a real good grandmother.” Introducing some of the greatest songs of the American Songbook, Ross was not a big star but she processed big talent.

Behold a near comprehensive collection of malaise-era auto styling cues. This is a 1982 Lincoln Continental Mark VI in two-tone Dark Brown over Medium Fawn Metallic. It has opera windows. It has a padded landau roof. It has hidden headlights. It has the electroluminescent carriage lights just past the rear side windows. The seats are beyond plush, leaning towards mushy. Ashtrays galore. It has a stand up hood ornament above a tombstone grill. It probably achieves like 90 horsepower from a big V8. There are separate plaques announcing ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION and AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE. It’s overall design theme is the color brown. I love it. This was getting close to the end for cars compensating for lack of performance by adding baroque styling. Within a decade cars would be rounder, with more power and actual technological breakthroughs beyond a digital dashboard. However, in the halcyon days of the Reagan administration, this was a downsized Lincoln. Garages across America have these cocooned within, confounding the heirs that discover them. If you want a leisurely, comfortable classic and a Cadillac is too much, grab your Kools and step into a Mark VI. #lincoln #markvi #continental #lincolncontinental #classiccars #classiccar #classiclincoln #malaise #ashtrays #velour #55mph #brownonbrown #operawindows #landau #retirement #phildonohue #bobbarker #bobhope #whoshotjr

Bing (while filming "Mr Music), chatting with Elizabeth Taylor on the set of her film "A Place in the Sun" (📸 1), and Bing's pal, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball player Ralph Kiner, visiting Bing on the set of "Mr Music" (📸 2), late 1949 Around that time, Liz Taylor needed to find a date to attend a movie premiere on December 21. Bing organized for Kiner to escourt her (📸 3). In his autobiography, Kiner recalled how he vsitied Bing at Paramount and how thrilled he was to accompany Liz: "My timing was impeccable because he asked me if I'd be interested in having a date with Elizabeth Taylor. He explained that she needed someone to accompany her to the premiere of the Gregory Peck war film Twelve O'Clock High at Grauman's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. Of course, he didn't have to ask me twice. [...] I have vivid memories of that [premiere] night [...]. It's too bad that night was such a mess because I never had the courage to ask her out on a second date. In fact, I never saw her again except in the movies." Of his friendship with Bing, Kiner wrote: "At the end of spring training [in San Bernardino], the team would travel the 50 miles south to LA, and Bing would throw a party for us at Chasen's, emceeing and singing songs with that effortless baritone voice that Louis Armstrong said 'was like gold being poured into a cup.' To have such a famous film and recording star do that made us feel special. One parody he'd sing began: 'Nothing could be finer than to be with Ralphie Kiner on the ballfield.' It wasn't 'White Christmas,' but each spring, I'd look forward to hearing that. [...] I got to know Crosby really well in the winters when we played a lot of golf and I started playing in his tournament. I discovered that he was a pleasant man to be around when he wasn't moody. He could be as affable as you would want and then for no apparent reason become very quiet and reserved. He was different from [Bob] Hope in that he was extremely introspective and usually preferred being alone and reading a book to being in front of an audience."

While he was filming "Just for You" from mid October to mid December 1951, Bing was mainly occupied with taping episodes for his radio show, with guests during that period including James Stewart, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Trudy Erwin and his son Lindsay. The taping of the show with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour turned into more than an hour instead of the scheduled 30 minutes due to wild ad-libbing by Bing and Bob, so half of the material had to be cut for the show to be broadcast. John T. Mullin was the man who had been employed by Bing to work with Bing Crosby Enterprises to develop magnetic tape technology. Through Ampex, they released the new technology, revolutionizing the recording industry, and Bing used magnetic tape to record his radio shows. In summer 1951, Mullin had started working on magnetic video tape, and by November, he demonstrated an early video recorder prototype. The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "In a preview of things to come, The Reporter Friday afternoon witnessed the first tape-recorded images seen through the use of a newly developed magnetic recording system which threatens to revolutionize methods of televising, and the making and distributing of motion pictures." Work on video tape would continue through the following years. For some days, Bing went to Lake Arrowhead with cast and crew of "Just for You" for on location shooting. It was there that he was photographed having lunch with his colleagues outside. In December, Bing found out that his son Gary, freshman at Stanford University, hadn't made any effort at all and was in danger of getting kicked out due to bad grades. Bing realized that he had made a mistake by giving Gary a car as a high school graduation present - he hadn't yet the maturity to be able to balance studies and pleasure. Bing has a aerious talk with Gary and took his car away from him. Gary was angry about this. His mother, Dixie, also wrote Gary a strict letter, threatening him with hard work if he didn't put himself together. Thanks to his parents putting him on the right track, Gary just managed to get his grades better and remain in university. Bing gave Gary his car back.

Happy heavenly 121st birthday, Bing! You have touched countless lives as an artist and as a person in so many incredibly different ways and you are still continuing to do so, reaching new generations. It's been roughly 90 years since you have widened your field of influence onto the entire world - while always remaining your own self. People loved and appreciated you for who you were and this love continues to hold on to this day. For Crosby fans, every day is Crosby day, but your birthday is even more so. Sharing lots of love through the slides above, showing just a fraction of the many souls that Bing has touched, among them: Louis Armstrong, Bob Hope, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Grace Kelly, Ella Fitzgerald, Phil Harris, Skitch Henderson, Dinah Shore, Rosemary Clooney, Red Buttons and Anthony Quinn. 🔊 turn the sound on on all the clips to hear the people themselves talking. Only slides 15-17 are without sound - the lengthy Louis Armstrong quotes are transcribed excerpts from Louie's handwritten 1969 letter to an unidentified friend (the first pages are missing)
