Barracoon: The Story of The Last "Black Cargo". Written by Zora Neale Hurston. Read by Robin Miles. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐. A shorter book, but so good even in his 70's he still remembers so much from his home in Africa. And I love that the author didnt whitewash his quotes and "translate" them into common english like so many biographers do to make it easier on the reader. This story isnt ment to be easy. #bookgirl #bookstagram #nonfictionbooks #blackhistory #barracoon #audiobook #audiobooksarestillbooks #locallibrary #pellcitylibrary #zorahurston

📖 In "La riscoperta dell’umanità. #donnedascoprire #donnefortiecoraggiose #donnenellastoria #storiedidonne #donneforti #donneperledonne #raccontididonne #storiadelledonne #raccontididonne #donnefamosedellastoria #biografiedidonne #donnefamosedelpassato #ladonnaelastoria #zoranealehurston #hurston #antropologhe #antropologia #zorahurston #alicewalker #margaretmead #lariscopertadellumanità #lariscopertadellumanita #consiglidilettura

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of artistic, literary, and cultural innovation in the African American community during the 1920s and 1930s. It was a time of great pride, creativity, and self-expression, and it left an indelible mark on African American culture. This period helped to create a sense of solidarity and community among African Americans, which in turn helped to lay the groundwork for the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The book “Harlem Speaks” highlights how the Harlem Renaissance, the first major movement of its kind in the United States, played a pivotal role in bringing African American literature and art to the forefront of the American cultural landscape. Zora Neale Hurston was a renowned author, folklorist and literary figure whose work and life were heavily influenced by Florida. When Hurston was 3 years old, she moved to Eatonville, Florida, where she lived until moving to Washington D.C. to attend Howard University. She next moved to New York City to study at Barnard College. While there, Hurston became a part of the Harlem Renaissance, which would come to influence many generations of Black writers and artists. Hurston then worked as an anthropologist throughout the Southern U.S. and Caribbean as she finished writing one of her most known works, “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” She then joined the Florida Writers Project as a folklorist. Florida inspired much of Hurston’s work, and she embraced her Floridian roots throughout her life. While she passed away in 1960, Hurston’s legacy remains an important part of Florida’s history. People can visit a museum in Eatonville and attend festivals throughout the state celebrating her life. Info from the Florida Department of State and Exploring Florida.

What’s the last non-fiction book you read? Also, do you like deckled pages? 📖 Overall Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 📖 First Sentence Rating: 5/10 📖 "This is the life story of Cudjo Lewis, as told by himself." 📖 Non-fiction openers, especially historical non-fiction, are often what you'd expect, thus making them fairly average. I feel that's what happens here. 📖 Of the negative reviews I've seen of this book, they almost all revolve around how long the foreword and afterword were, having some issue they took with the story and publishing, or not getting something new about slavery because they're already so well versed on the subject. I don't think those are fair assessments of the story itself, because this book was only recently published due to reasons I highly recommend researching. 📖 Oluale Kossola's story is heart wrenching and informative, and I thought Hurston's role in having it told is also incredibly interesting. Additionally, preserving Kossola's dialect was a beautiful way to also help preserve his story. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook as well. 📖 I might bump this review to five stars if I ever reread Barracoon, but until then, I'll keep it at four. I think this is a must for anyone interested in learning more about those who were stolen from their homeland after the slave trade had been banned. Though it took far too long, I'm glad that Kossola's story, at least in part, has now been told. 📖 #barracoon #zoranealehurston #readblackstories #blackbooks #zorahurston #whattoreadnext #hurston #nonfiction #femaleauthors #blacklit #theireyeswerewatchinggod #alicewalker #readingisfundamental #decklededge #readdiversebooks #blackhistory #amistad #harpercollins #blackstories #idratherbereading #bookreviewers #bipocauthors #blackauthors #bipoc #diversifyyourbookshelf #bookaesthetic #readthisbook #diversespines

Zora Hurston is one of my favorite writers. I love her wit and her use of colloquial language to convey the meaning and the feeling of the scenes she describes. Some of her stories make me cry 😭 some make me laugh 😂 and a few of them had me terrified at my desk 😳. Not only is her writing intriguing, but her life was intriguing as well. She made grand entrances, danced at parties, made many friends and foes, and was one of the greatest writers of her time. Her involvement in the Harlem Renaissance was incredibly valuable. Our new Rediscovered classic selection is “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Hurston. A classic from the Harlem Renaissance, this beautiful, haunting story follows a woman's search for love, independence and, ultimately, self-discovery. It is a lyrical novel that has become a Southern masterpiece, this is a story that deserves to be read, re-read and savored. . . . #barnesandnoble #rediscoveredclassics #theireyeswerewatchinggod #zorahurston #bnbuzz #booksellerfavorites #booksellerrecommends #barnesandnobleholland#booksellersofinstagram #hollandmichigan #bookstagram #tbr
