Der Name verrät es bereits. Der Färberwaid wurde als Rohstoff zum Färben von Stoffen, insbesondere Leinen, verwendet. Aus ihr stammt der blaue Farbstoff Indigo. Die Geschichte der Isatis tinctoria führt bis in die Antike zurück. Aus Caesars Aufzeichnungen über seine Feldzüge ist bekannt, dass sich Kelten und Briten mit einem blaugrünen Farbstoff die Gesichter anmalten, um den Feinden in der Schlacht möglichst furchterregend gegenüberzutreten. Entsprechende Funde im englischen Dragonby, im Norden von North Lincolnshire, deuten darauf hin, dass es sich um Färberwaid gehandelt haben muss. Bei der Farbgebung mittelalterlicher Kleidung spielte die Textilfarbe aus der Pflanze, die als König der Farbstoffe galt, eine zentrale Rolle. Ihren Ursprung hat sie in Westasien, kam aber bereits im Altertum nach Europa. Bis ins 17. Jahrhundert hinein wurde Färberwaid in England, Südfrankreich, dem Elsass und in Deutschland angebaut. Die Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Färberwaid-Pflanze in der Naturmedizin sind ebenfalls vielfältig. Verwendet wird die ganze Pflanze: Blätter, Blüten und Wurzeln. Aus den Wurzeln lässt sich ein Bitterlikör gegen Erkältungen herstellen. Hildegard von Bingen schätzte Waid ebenfalls als Heilkraut. Sie kochte einen Sud aus der Pflanze, mischte ihn mit Geierfett und Hirschtalg und stellte daraus eine Salbe her, die sie ihren Patienten gegen Lähmungen auftrug. Mit einer Tinktur aus getrockneten Blättern werden Psoriasis-Patienten mit beachtlichen Erfolgen behandelt. Flechten und Ekzeme sprechen ebenfalls sehr gut auf den Färberwaid an. Full (dye)house! All three of the ‘grands teints’ on the go in my #dyestudio today. Woad, madder and weld were the most important natural dyes since medieval times and earlier. I’m experimenting with second-year #woad shoots, a small test a couple of weeks ago gave some blue but much more of the pink indirubin . The #madderroot is gently extracting for the 7th time from the same small batch of roots. I think it is just about exhausted by now but I may be able to dye some paper. The #weld is a used dyebath, now slowly reducing by evaporation in an uncovered slow-cooker, also for dyeing paper. Woad and weld from the #ecocreativecluster #dyegarden . We have just harvested our madder but the batch I’m still using is from #naturesrainbowhitchin .

Recovering from what was probably covid, I am sipping thyme tea to soothe my throat and am splashing around with more woad and clay based paint. Exploring the ideas I encountered on my recent trip to Ulm about the settlement of paleolithic people in that area during the ice ages. Interestingly woad is a plant based pigment originating from the middle east, which probably made it's way into Europe with the first farmers. I have been using it for several years. It's a colour I associate with migration and longing. Synen på häxan har skiftat genom tiderna. Vi som skriver fantasy har möjlighet att välja den vinkel vi vill: Vill vi visa på vad kvinnor behövt utstå bara för att de inte anpassat sig till krav på likriktning, eller vill vi visa på hur det kan vara istället? När jag nu blivit ombedd att berätta om mina häxor, i mina böcker, så vill jag berätta om prästinnorna i Leike. De är kunniga kvinnor, bland annat när det gäller växter (hur de odlas och hur de kan användas), och de berättar gärna sagor, både för nöjes skull och som en grund för djupa filosofiska samtal. Varje år för de noggranna anteckningar om naturens skiftningar. Det finns en religiös grund för prästinnornas liv och verksamhet, men den är aldrig i fokus - traditionerna och ritualerna i sig är viktigare än religionen. Epäilin, että eivät lähde kasvuun kun kasvuolosuhteet ovat kovin erilaiset kuin luonnossa kasvaessaan, mutta kyllä sieltä on alkuja tullut. Saa nyt nähdä miten pärjää pidemmän päälle. So yellow and yet produces seeds which will give birth to a blue pigment dye plant called Woad or Isatis Tinctoria … the flowers are out on my plants and were glorious today when we went to the Botanics to cover the beds with weed suppressing breathable membrane to allow the beds to rest before we transfer there the lovely plants I have maturing at home. A few woad plants were planted in the veg garden at the barn garden last year and they did really well, flowering over a long period as well as holding onto their seeds into autumn. This year we’ve benefited from a decent amount of self seeding from last years plants and they are rising to flower now. Easy enough to just pull out any you don’t want. Last few pics are last year. I find the self seeders do so much better than capturing the seed and sowing in pots. Isatis tinctoria Or Dyers Woad. Another visit to one of my very favourite gardens, Forde Abbey in Chard, Somerset …as usual I was blown away not only by the beautiful and very unusual plants but especially by the visionary planting plans that make combinations like this! I gather from speaking to the gardeners working today that it is the lady of the house herself, Alice Kennard who chooses the plant combinations, and I feel she deserves a lot of kudos, as a garden designer and having seen a lot of gardens, very few blow me away like each visit to Forde Abbey’s gardens have. A rain soaked faff was in order first thing this morning. The unrelenting rain kept me awake during the night and another sodden and sullen day is hanging over the garden. I bought this gorgeous copper vessel on eBay a few years ago. I love its rich warm tones and hammered curled handles. I stole myself and cut a few of this year’s new favourite tulips ‘Charming Lady’. I’ve been patiently waiting for them to make an appearance. Not one for bright colour usually, but I’m glad of these little bowls of sunshine - it being such a rarity this spring. Finished my unit of Ancient Celtic Fanatics for Lion Rampant. They're painted in a bit of an ahistorical style -- the Celts probably didn't wear woad the way we tend to imagine! But I wanted something that evoked 2000AD Sláine comics and their menace on the battlefield rather than being strictly true to life. Insane, painted blue, hair bleached by spiking it with lime and resin, that sort of thing. Happy with the overall effect of the unit though as always there's details I feel I could have done better or might have approached differently with more time. Very enjoyable to work on though! Maple silk scarf 🍁 in a beautiful Kendal Green. The Kendal green was a colour obtained in Middle Age from dyeing cloth with weld (Reseda luteola) and then overdye with and indigo-bearing plant, like woad or indigo, to turn it into green. Although green is the most abundant colour in nature, it is almost impossible to get a good green dye. I love this photo of my Birka kit at Danelaw from @lacyclaggphotos. I got a new-to-me apron dress from @ask_embla_reenactment and I love it! I was hekkin sick but was having so much fun! I’m working on upgrading my kit to all handwoven, handsewn, and plant dyed as much as I’m able but it’s been a process. I still have a couple of other clothing items in the works but I should have a fully upgraded kit by the end of this summer! EarthDay op 22 april 2024 herinnert ons aan het belang van milieubehoud en duurzaamheid en moedigt ons aan om samen te komen en actie te ondernemen voor een gezondere planeet en een betere toekomst. Daar doet De Katoendrukkerij in de Volmolen in Amersfoort natuurlijk ook graag aan mee. Onze bijdrage is structureel door deelnemers aan te moedigen bij onze workshops hergebruikt textiel te upcyclen, een upgrade te geven en zo langer in de kringloop te houden. Uiteraard werken we met milieuvriendelijke, oplosmiddelvrije textielverf. We onderzoeken wat we kunnen doen om het beetje verf dat we moeten uitspoelen apart af te voeren. Daarnaast bieden we in ons workshopaanbod de mogelijkheden van natuurlijk verven te gebruiken. Tegenover de Volmolen is onze educatieve verfpantentuin met meekrap, wede en wouw. Dit jaar doen we ook mee aan de @_1m2vlas van @_thelinenproject mee, een gezamenlijk initiatief van ArtEZ MA Practice Held in Common en @craftscouncilnederland. Daarin creëren we nieuwe verhalen die landbouw, (cultureel) erfgoed, onderwijs, infrastructuur, (landschaps)architectuur en (mode)ontwerp verenigen.

March and April flowers in A Year of Woodland Blossoms by @stitchdoodlesdesign are woad and common flax. The woad really taxed my patience. When embroidering a printed design the part I find the most difficult is covering the printed lines, and the woad had a lot of dark lines to cover! I put it aside for several weeks and began again after stitching the flax. A warm corner in the otherwise shaded garden behind Artspace Oban is great for germinating #dyeplants . Yesterday @naokomabon and I sowed Coreopsis, Cosmos, Dyer’s Chamomile and Butterfly Pea to join the woad seeds I sowed a few weeks ago - swipe to see the woad seedlings. These plants will be grown on in the #ecocreativecluster #dyegarden at #therockfieldcentre . Looking forward to the oranges, yellows, greens, blues and pinks we should get from them!
