How to love someone after war? Finally, after you find your beloved in a battlefield, hold them closer this time, brush every grain of sand off their hair, and remove their armour. Wipe off the debris amassed on their skin, burnt and dragged. Look in their eyes and collect the exuding courage they've garnered with every strike their sword has made, and then quickly reassemble the flesh protruding from their wounds. Clean the stubborn bloodshed all over their face that subtly reflects barbarity. Carry them on your back, and walk through the forbidden rubble of your beloved city like people of Gaza often do. The blood dripping from their finger tips, and the fading breath escaping their body will remind you of thin air that brushes through the bashful cheeks of every child who dreamt of a future in Palestine, by their lovely olive trees. Walk and walk through the fallen buildings and schools, through the screams and the deafening wailing, through the airstrikes and the misfires. Carry them to your room and then delve into their skin, removing each bullet as you see numbness reigning over their minds. Shelter their fears, and skim their burnt skin. Fasten their flesh, and sew their wounds. Tear a part of your clothes and tie it around their arms, fill the bullet holes with apologies, tears and their voids with ashes. Listen to their heart screaming of bombs and injustice, and then when moonlight fills the room, wrap hope, and faith for them in a box and serve it with their favourite coffee. Trap for them warmth, and sunshine; walk with them through their nightmares, and sit by their side when they sweat of violence. Knit for them clothes in their favourite colour with devotion; and then build a fierce armour with love, an armour strong enough to restrain bullets and sword strikes. Where major weapons manufacturers use governments and terrorist organisations to profit for themselves at the expense of other people’s lives, misery and property. These companies are funded by some financial institutions and institutional investment funds, who are indirectly contributing to destruction and misery. Hence its important that the corporate social responsibility transparency of recently introduced Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting becomes embedded in corporate disclosures, as companies, their lobbyists and some politicians are arguing the case to turn away from it in the past few months. Some 1.5 million people gathered in Rafah are desperately hoping for a ceasefire, fearing yet more bloodshed if there is a threatened ground offensive launched against Rafah, for it will have a devastating impact on vulnerable and traumatised civilians in Gaza as unimaginable suffering will be caused. On 26th-28th February 2022, following the full Russian invasion, Berlin photographer @vincent_haiges_ witnessed the parting of families in Ukraine, as women, children and old people fled their homes, and fathers and husbands had to say goodbye. I was so proud to work with Vincent on 'Paper Sanctuary', the Humanitarian Pavilion by Japanese architect and Pritzker Prize-winner Shigeru Ban and his NGO @voluntary_architects_network for @londondesignbiennale 2023. Collaborating too were Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov (now a refugee in Berlin) and Ukrainian-born poet, novelist and award-winning literary translator @svetlana_lavochkina, who helped me to select Ukrainian poems from the anthology 'Words for War' and contributed her own and others. She also wrote a powerful essay called 'The Nightingale', and issued an open FaceBook call for refugees to send in 'memories of home' (text and photos). The 49 contributions we received were so powerful in their honesty, love and memories of people, pets, belongings, gardens, and the ordinary things that make us happy in our homes. One is the memory of a Camellia, planted in a garden but abandoned before it could flower. Perhaps we should all plant a Camellia for the people of Ukraine as they continue to fight back, for the whole of Europe. Eisenhower On 22nd December the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on the ongoing crisis in Gaza, demanding immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance directly to the Palestinian civilian population throughout the Gaza Strip, which both the US and Russia abstained on, even though there was no wording included calling for a ceasefire. Yet in the month since the conflict seems to have gone way down the radar for western leaders and western media, as reporting has dwindled, albeit not helped by independent foreign correspondents not allowed into Gaza. While 85% of the besieged strip’s population of 2.3 million people have been displaced from their homes, dealing with cold, hunger and disease in unsanitary and chaotic makeshift displacement camps, More than 25,700 Palestinians in Gaza and almost 1,500 Israelis have been killed since 7 October. When will the pointless killing end from both sides, for its continuation will only harden the hearts of future generations. Is there any willingness for a negotiated agreement and peace for both sides to coexist peacefully? In conflict zones around the world journalists report on events as today’s news, which becomes tomorrows history. In the current Gaza conflict no foreign journalists have been allowed in to report independently. While some international correspondents have been embedded with the IDF inside Gaza, they are forbidden to have contact with Palestinians on the ground. At least seventy media workers have been killed in the current Gaza conflict. If they were from the west would there be a greater outcry? Increasingly journalists in conflict zones tread a fine line between safety and freedom of speech, where they are increasingly threatened and killed. Is the need for their protection causing harm to free speech, and increasing the production of one-sided journalism? Embedding with the military is a more immediate and practical solution. But do journalist inevitably become partial to their hosts, and the diversity of journalism suffers. The proliferation of one-sided journalism has been flagged as a concern in war zones even before the rise of embedded journalism. When we have no objective journalists or a free press, history won’t be properly recorded, one sided narratives are told and conspiracy theories take hold.
