I keep hearing fatalistic, passive anguish about how “everything is against the common man” and how human rights values, and institutions that serve them – however imperfectly—are rubbish. 😮 And what do I see? Today, this: responsive, caring, local government officials doing their best for communities. It’s a beautiful thing – especially when you consider they are likely overwhelmed, limited, and destined to disappoint some people. Still, they are trying. ✊️ And elsewhere, people in Ukraine giving everything for freedom. ✊ Community groups and humanitarians in Palestine trying to preserve human dignity in a desperate situation. ✊ Activists across the world raising the profile of their work, and addressing anti-semitic sentiment and violence. ❤️And everywhere, tiny acts of kindness and grace to make suffering more bearable and our world more beautiful. ❤️ There is no power in surrendering to despair. There is no energy in checking out from the challenges of our time, complaining that there’s no point trying. There is hope, power, and joy in being part of the making of a better world.❤️ Cheers to that, and cheers you: my dear friends and colleagues, who care enough to try. You keep trying when it’s hard. “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered, the point is to discover them.” - Galileo Since last October more than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, as part of the devastating retaliatory offensive in response to Hamas’s attack on Oct. 7 attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in another 253 being abducted. What is referred to “the news” we generally receive in the mainstream media is the creation of a journalistic process during which information is gathered and shaped by multiple players. News is a commodity baked from a set of ingredients that are not limited to the occurrences being reported but include the personal morality, ambition, and world views of journalists, editors, and owners of media organisations, in addition to financial, political, and social pressures. Its assumed by most that editorial policies and professional codes are in place for media organisations to navigate these treacherous waters and come out on the other side with a credible product. When faced with situations, especially those in which quick, evaluative judgments are required, journalists and their editors rely more on their own intuitive sense of right or wrong and the opinions of peers than on much vaunted professional norms. When working at high speeds, which is typical when covering an unfolding crisis such as Gaza, journalists have a tendency to fall back on well worn themes and observations, rather than to make well considered decisions. Often stereotypes and simplistic explanations offering good vs bad dichotomies, and the information that fits into such framing, is not only favoured, but will be widely reproduced as journalists copy what their peers are doing. So a journalists’ internal moral compasses may not be as reliable a guide as assumed. Largely produced by foreign correspondents for audiences in the west “international news” reflects imperial standards and world views. Whoever controls the media, controls the mind.
