📚 Book Review 📚 Title: Her Name was Rose Author: Claire Allan Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/5 Brilliant thriller which kept me gripped throughout, finished reading it in less than 1.5 days. In the beginning, I really didn’t like the character of Emily & was questioning the reliability of what she was saying but I loved her character development. I spent a large chunk of the book screaming at her to open her eyes! Everything was definitely not as it seemed & the author captures the complex dynamics of relationships - no one knows what happens behind closed doors. 2023 Reading Recap: Now that 2023 is officially over, I thought it was a good day to reflect on the books I've read over the past year and really ensure I am happy with my ratings and happy with the book genres I've read. Eight Winter Nights by Liz Maverick ⭐️⭐️/5 Some spoilers... This plot was so bizarre, I can't even begin to explain without giving spoilers. Personally, I found the story to be really surface level. There was no depth to any of the characters. Relationships and friendships were kind of muddled up to the point that it was really uncomfortable. Particularly with the ending with how the best friend handles the situation and how flippant she is about her friend and ex's relationship. With today in the spotlight: Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo. 😅 Leigh Bardugo knows how to write emotionally damaging books. It all started with Shadow & Bone, the foundation for the Grishaverse. The characters and worldbuilding and… 👌🏼🥲 Okay, we don't have enough space in this post for a detailed summary of why you should start reading these books if you haven't done it yet. Bummer. 😭 Then Six of Crows came out and boy were we not ready for the new emotional damage that book brought… 😪 Could Leigh do any more damage? Yes she could. 💪 If you've gone through all the emotional rollercoasters of the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the six of crows duology, you can dive into a new emotional rollercoaster: the story of Nikolai Lantsov, Zoya Nazialinsky and Nina Zenik (have Shannen told you recently about her girl crush? Because she is fangirling over Nina ♡). 🧐 This book is taking you places you don't want to go, love stories you don't want to see brutally ended, it gives you everything if you're craving for a fantasy series with damaging storylines, it also has so much humor, a great storyline, plot twists, badass women, funny men and a lot to love. This year we started in Circe and even though we both had mixed feelings about it, we decided we wanted to explore more of the Greek myths. You've read Percy Jackson (which I still haven't) and you loved it. You loved how a fantasy book let's you dive deeper into the myths and all the characters of ancient Greece. Even though I haven't read the Percy Jackson series, I think it's time for you to make an upgrade to a retelling of the myths of ancient Greece. Stephen Fry uses humor to describe the start of everything and how it all got to where we are now. He makes sure we, as readers who are not yet that familiair with the myths, understand what's going on. I think you'de love the humor, but also getting to know more about these myths. I think it's a good book to update your knowlegde so you can read more books about Greek (demi)gods. Hope you'll enjoy it! 🔸️𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉🔸️ Sometimes when we really don't enjoy a book and we struggle so badly to finish the book, we just give up on them. When a book doesn't work for you, it's okay to put it down and start a new book that you do enjoy. Anna here is the Queen of DNF's (didn't finish books). She didn't finish 9 books this year. Actually 10 but she wants to give one of them another chance. Shannen doesn't have many dnf'd books. There were some not so great buddy reads and other books that she had some struggles with, but when a book is relatively short, she just wants to finish it. Shannen’s DNF's: - After we collided (I already struggled through the first one and this one was even more problematic and triggering, so no thank you!) - The everlasting rose (I just didn't get it... maybe because I listened to the audiobook, because I do remember being intrigued by the world building and the characters) - The miracle morning (the worst self-help book to start my year with). Anna's DNF'S: -The mountains Sing (I already forgot this book. Read 55%) -Slay ( I just read 5 chapters. It was very racist and disturbing.) -Twins of Orion ( DNF 50%. Have I ever started this??) -Dangerous Alliance (DNF 65% again don't remember that one) -The Tenth chamber ( DNF 25%. While reading I forgot what I had read.) -Artemis ( DNF 65% ohhh boy about this one I can write whole review) -Calm the f*ck down ( 45% I wasn't calm.) -Circus of Wonders ( 51% Bad version of Nevermoor) - A History of Wild Places ( 70% About this one I am really sad but my interest in this book disappeared together with Travis.) Listajući svoje stare dnevnike, naišla sam na zapise sa završne godine fakulteta. Sa stranica se cijede stres i nemoćna frustracija. Svakog tjedna na popisu obavezne literature po jedan Shakespeare, onda jedno djelo iz novije hrvatske književnosti i jedno iz američke, sve to uz obavezne odlaske na predavanja, pripremanje seminara, kolokvija i dodatne hospitacije u školi. Do kraja tog iscrpljujućeg maratona istrošila sam gotovo svu zalihu brucoškog entuzijazma. Sjećam se priprema za jedan od posljednjih ispita i mog ogorčenog pitanja profesoru: "Čemu toliki popisi lektire? Što ću čitati pod stare dane ako sve s (pozamašnog) popisa pročitam već sad?" Sjećam se i njegova odgovora koji u ovoj životnoj dobi ima mnogo više smisla nego što je imao u tadašnjoj: "Samo Vi čitajte, dok još imate vremena. Kad stignu djeca... obaveze... posao Vas razvuče na sto strana... navale razni problemi, bolesti... Više nikad nećete imati toliko vremena kao sad." I bio je u pravu. Zadnjih nekoliko godina često ga se sjetim, pogotovo u onim trenucima kad uz zakasninu u knjižnicu vraćam posuđene pa produžene, a na kraju ipak nepročitane ili polupročitane knjige. Zanimljive knjige koje sam stvarno željela dovršiti, ali na kraju nisam stigla. Ovo su neke koje sam u 2020. sa zadovoljstvom uspjela pročitati: Život za životom K. Atkinson, Daleko od Irske W. I bought this book back in March and I am sooo mad that I left it until now to read it. I've read two of Robyn Harding's books now and I cannot wait for the next! Her Pretty Face was suspenseful and mysterious, the writing was just perfect. I am also very proud of myself because I guessed the twist (well a small part of it anyway) which I very rarely do but this book really played on the heart strings so you could really empathise with the characters (which made it easier I guess to follow the plot). I was captured by the prologue straight away and I then proceeded to read this book in 24 hours. I also loved how the chapters alternated between three main characters. 2018 has been an adventure. I moved from Michigan to Missouri, changed my hair, changed my job, and met more amazing people. I went to the USAV nationals for the first time, explored Colorado, gained and lost muscle mass, and ate every vegan thing in sight. We bought a new (used) car, got our first pet, and I even FINALLY updated my phone! 2018 has been full of change but I and so grateful to have @coach.keith to experience it all with me! Cheers!
