Growing up, I was surrounded by a family of avid readers, especially my mother, father, and maternal grandfather, whose love for books shaped my early years. My mother's monthly purchase of small storybooks like Champak Kumar and Thakthak &many fueled my curiosity and love for reading from a childhood age. During my college days, while others sought leisure on the ground, I found solace and enrichment in the library, immersing myself in diverse realms of knowledge. As I delved deeper into my studies for MPSC and UPSC exams, reading became not just a habit but a necessity, with hours spent poring over the same books and devouring five newspapers daily during exam seasons. However, the pursuit of entrepreneurship temporarily diverted my focus from reading as I dedicated myself to building my business from scratch. Financial constraints limited my access to new books, but the passion for reading never waned. Now, ( after mid end of 2023 & ) in 2024, as I reignite my reading journey, I realize that books are not just companions but lifelines, offering insights, knowledge, and perspectives that shape our understanding of the world. One thing that I’m always asked: How do you read so many books?? Answer: I don’t. If you were to look at the number of books I have read, it’s minuscule in comparison. But I still try to make time to read everyday. Answer lies where you consume your reading from. Some days it’s my book or other days it’s a blog that I’ve subscribed to (in a newsletter format rather than finding something on the internet which will end up wasting your time). Some days it can be a snippet in a newspaper editorial or a bookmarked article in my repository. Point is: something’s gotta be read! Once you get over the fact that you have to read from books and consistently feed on whatever you can get your hands on, it gets easier. How to make time for it then? • Read in the morning before you get on to your work. Some days I just read for 5 minutes while sipping my coffee. • Read before bedtime. By the same token of reading in the morning, taking some time out at night will help ease out and transition from the day before. • Ignore what you ‘should’ be reading or what is trending. When you limit or judge what you read, building your habit hits a block. • Use your commute time or other pockets in the day where you can either jump off your schedule to take a little reading break or combine with a task like cooking or walking (in this case an audiobook/podcast are your buddies) • Don’t set towering goals. If you’re reading with a background checklist in mind, you’re just working for a tick in the box. • Lastly, skim through what you’re reading. It is perfectly okay. According to @ryanholiday , the key to reading lots of book begins with stop thinking of it as some activity that you do.
