TECUCIZTECATL The Man of the Big Shell ~ El hombre del gran caracol Tecuciztecatl is a central figure in the creation story of the current age. In the story, all the divine beings are gathered to create the new sun and each must give of ferings to the fire. Tecuciztecatl, a wealthy deity, offered precious gifts. Instead of offering mere branches, he of fered costly feathers. Instead of straw, he offered gold and instead of maguey spines he offered spines made of precious gems. Instead of offering his own blood, he of fered blood-colored coral along with the best copal. When the deities asked for volunteers to sacrifice by throwing themselves into the fire to create the sun, two deities answered the call: Tecuciztecatl and Nanahuatzin. But Tecuciztecatl was afraid. He tried four times to enter the fire, but could not. After he failed the fourth time, Nanahuatzin bravely threw himself on the ritual fire to create the sun. Ashamed of his cowardice, Tecuciztecatl followed Nanahuatzin into the fire and became the moon. The shell is a representation of the moon, which is why he is often depicted with a shell, sometimes on his back and other times over his head. When Tecuciztecatl appears, he may be drawing your attention to the fact that you are more concerned with material things than spiritual matters. Or, he may be calling your attention to your own cowardice, urging you to take action in your life before it is too late. Today’s deck is The Jade Oracle (mini deck) and guidebook by Veronica Iglesias & Anne Key of @the.jade.oracle with artwork by Ramona Snow Teo of @divine.nature.arts. This oracle deck contains 52 mini travel sized cards (2.5" x 1.75") of original artwork that introduces the reader to ancient Mexican symbolism. The deck is also available in a standard size of 3.5" x 5.5". The creators of this deck wanted to create a deck of sacred pre-Hispanic deities & symbols to give a different view of the Americas, which has often been Euro-centric. As per the creators, “The sacred images of pre-Hispanic deities are very different than the sacred images of European culture, which we in America – and even Mexico – are far more accustomed to seeing. These images have unfamiliar symbols – green feathers, skulls, snakes, nose ornaments – and unfamiliar names: Xochiquetzal, Huitzilopochtli, Tecuciztecatl for example.These sacred images and names open the door to a profoundly magnificent culture that reveres the connection of the earth and Her inhabitants, that celebrates the small and grand cycles – that infuses ritual and attention to the sacred in daily life.” These sweet little cards are very well done: substantial card stock, vivid color, dual language (English/Spanish), and downloadable guidebook with both English/Spanish translations. The cards help the reader get acquainted with the archetypes that are universal to us all and the guidebook, which is also available in print, helps the reader understand the mythology and interpretations of the cards. In a few hours, it will officially be autumn in my hemisphere. 🍂🎃 (For those of you welcoming spring, lucky you! But in honesty, all seasonal change is worth celebrating.) The Wheel of the Year prompts us to consider change in our lives - and how we can use what's happening around us to understand ourselves better. I used to find autumn very depressing. I even used to describe it as "a prelude to Hell," an allusion to Dante's chilled and chained Satan. My feelings toward the season have warmed over the past several years, and even though I know dark times are ahead, I try not to look at them so negatively. Shorter days and longer nights mean more quiet time, more reflection, and a closer hold on all things that bring warmth. 🕯️ For me, this season is also very nostalgic. I think of my teenage self in high school and college and the time I spent with friends and with my writing. It's the perfect season for writing a novel. (I guess that's why NaNoWriMo is in November?) I want to make more space for writing fiction. I've been blessed with growth in a lot of areas of my life this year - but my creative life can use focused attention.
