Is it a sudden eureka moment or a subtle shift of perception? Over human history you can trace the absorption of one belief system into another seeing different elements, symbols, stories appearing in one belief appearing as part of, or alongside, the new ideas to help the amalgamation of cultures, politics and religions. With so many different choices, voices and channels that come through our technologies, all jostling for our attention, the global traumas, perceived threats and environmental disasters overwhelm with every click, swipe and blink. Belief systems loud and quiet, bombard us through media channels nestling in our systems. At what point do they shift our own beliefs? When do they change our daily rituals? Our inherited religions? Over time our historical stories, tenets, symbols, signs and meanings that have been part of our upbringing are challenged or re-strengthened. The artwork in the Lutyens Room is arranged as a procession through objects of different artistic beliefs, pointing to new myths, a point of Syncretism where ideas become merged and the old symbols get incorporated into new systems. Mythology Minute: Papa Legba (Haitian Voodoo - pictured here from a 1968 painting by Andre Pierre) (Click here for more about Pierre: https://haitianartsociety.org/andre-pierre-papa-legba-1968 ) Haitian Voodoo is an example of syncretism in religion, or the merging of different belief sets into one new religion. During the slave trades of the 1500s-1700s, many people were abducted from their homes throughout West Africa and delivered as slaves to the Haitian islands. The Catholic church, seeing an opportunity to support European colonialists while also filling their ranks by converting people to Christianity, sent missionaries to the Haitian islands to preach to the slaves. Though many slaves professed conversion, many also secretly maintained their traditional beliefs and practices brought along from their home cultures. When Haitians declared successful liberation from French colonial rule in 1804, not only did the French rulers leave but so did many of those Catholic missionaries. That left a significant religious void into which this new, syncretic religion of Voodoo evolved, built upon those traditional beliefs and merged with Catholic Christianity. Papa Legba is a Lwa of Haitian Voodoo, or a messenger spirit that moves between the mortal realm and Bondye, the Divine Creator. Legba is the most famous Lwa in Haitian Voodoo. He sits at the crossroads and represents change in a person's life. Sometimes referred to as "The Trickster," He has the power to either grant or deny humans' petitions when they ask to contact other spirits. This has been your Mythology Minute! Una semana para recibir Beltane con la víspera y primeros de mayo. Noches de fogata y la espera del primer aguacero de mayo son tradiciones que se remontan a la antigüedad de donde vienen las tradiciones de espantar los malos espíritus que puedan andar merodeando en esta víspera. Y por el otro lado bendecirnos con las aguas que bañan la naturaleza en estas fechas, cuando la tierra se encuentra rebozando en fertilidad. Los puntos intermedios siempre se han creído momentos donde lo intangible con lo tangible tienen encuentro; amaneceres y anocheceres, solsticios, equinoccios y sus puntos medios como lo son Beltane, espíritus de la naturaleza, ancestros, pero por el mismo modo cualquier otro ente que ande suelto puede hacer contacto con nuestro mundo. Por esa razón se despide en su totalidad a los espíritus nocturnos e invitamos a los lumínicos a brindar su fertilidad a nuestro territorio y hogar para que esta mitad de año sea fructífera. Es ahora cuando se ha creído los espíritus ctonicos retoman su viaje al subsuelo donde permanecen latentes en su trabajo hasta que el invierno vuelva a tomar reinado, en la celebracion de Samhain. Asi se ha dividido el año desde los pueblos antiguos, de solsticio a solsticio, ó de este punto intermedio al otro, las puertas que abren el preludio de la estacion mas lumínica a la más oscura. Oddities in Chinese Australian Syncretism: Private home shrines 1) A statuette of 濟公 Jigong, "The Honourable Helper", a Chinese folk deity. Our Jigong is a bit more tan than other Jigong for some reason, maybe from absorbing some of Aussie sun. 😂 Otherwise, his Buddhist monk garb, the hand fan and the gourd of wine is pretty much stock standard when it comes to depictions of Jigong. 2) A creepy glow-in-the-dark Mammoth skeleton figurine from the WA Museum gift shop. Why?? Well, for me, there's 3 possible explanations for it's addition to the shrine: - Dad bought this for me when I was 9, maybe 10. So maybe it's just a touching memento that he's kept around and displayed. - Dad is a secret Ganesha devotee. I mean, The God of New Beginnings, Wisdom, Luck as well as the Remover of Obstacles. All things I'd imagine a refugee would find comfort in. - It's an ancestral shrine and we're members of the ancient secret Mammoth Clan. 3) Incense holder with lit incense. Duh! It's a shrine. 4) Fish and Chips as the offering for Jigong. I'm pretty sure this is sacrilegious. 😂 Then again Jigong himself, when he was alive, was a misbehaving monk who ate meat and drank alcohol on occasion. Senegalese culture has much to teach us. I was reflecting upon this the other day as I admired a gorgeous tree. Do you know that in the Wolof tongue, the word for tree - garab - literally means ‘remedy’? Now, there’s a thought. It brought a smile to my face. This notion that the essence of a tree is to heal. 🧘🌴 The choice of this word is no coincidence considering the Senegalese reliance on plant remedies. As an example, Baobab juice - known as bouye in Wolof - possesses health qualities that are only now being marketed in the Western world but have benefited the Senegalese for hundreds of years. Did you know also that Senegal is mostly Sufi? Indeed, 95 percent of Muslims in Senegal belong to a Sufi Brotherhood, more than in any other Muslim population in the world. Sufism teachings encourage tolerance rather than dogmatism. Recall from Rumi’s teachings that Sufis are less concerned with an exact interpretation of the Qur’an, and instead strive to merge with God. There is a syncretistic quality to the Senegalese who make room for the inexplicable and the mystical, even while believing in science. This syncretism extends to their attitude toward other faiths - including enduring indigenous animist beliefs - and toward their own multiple ethnic groups, fostering peace and unity. And since we are speaking of plants (and fruits), did you know the word, banana 🍌 is believed to originate from Wolof? Con la sincretizacion de las religiones monoteístas y las prácticas de los pueblos antiguos, Beltane ha pasado a celebrarse junto a la Cruz de Mayo, que toma caracteres de los bailes y decorados del palo de Mayo, tambien los rosarios de la Santa cruz que ocurren en mismo mes; las fiestas de San Isidro, el cual se sincretiza con la veneración a los pozos, cuerpos de agua y espíritus del reino vegetal, al igual que las fiestas de Santiago el Verde, muy similares a las de San Isidro, el cual una canción muy popular espanta las lluvias para atraer el buen tiempo con el sol. " San Isidro Labrador, quita el agua y pon el sol". En otras palabras, aleja el "tiempo oscuro" lluvioso y nublado para brindar el "tiempo lumínico" soleado.
