As #NationalShareAStoryMonth2024 finishes, I am sharing my personal journey with menhdi and how it has been a meaningful part of my cultural identity and heritage 👐🏽🌿❦. From a young age, I was drawn to the ancient art of menhdi, commonly known as henna. This temporary art form spans across different cultural traditions and roots back to the marking of special occasions. I had always been fascinated by the intertwining of shapes and patterns that tell unique stories through the canvas of the skin is simply mesmerising! 🪷 Each design to me holds a special meaning, weaving a personal tale of orginality. I've always felt a deep connection to the innovative beauty of body art, where creativity merges with the essence of the soul. 🍂🤎🌰 From experimenting with henna blends to creating calming aromas, my craft with mehndi has been a labour of love. Each paste mixed with care, infused with natural oils, and designed to spread joy through delicate designs. I had the incredible opportunity to train with talented artists at @joshivbeauty, as well as with a renowned artist from Holland who has since retired from the industry. I gained lots of experience taking part in melas to  fashion show runways and supporting charity benefits and bridal parties in the North, UK. My passion has been a wild ride of excitement and fulfilment. I feel cultural arts play a vital role in preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of South Asian communities. Fast forward to now, I am taking what I have learnt and passing this on through the new practice and application of mandala dotting painting. Hopefully, you will come along and join me at a workshop that I am running nationally throughout the year 🩷 🎨 Photo credit: my hands featuring @dhennaart #herkhaani #herstory #storytelling #hennastory #menhdi #henna #hennaart #southasianarts #creativity #southasianstories #southasianwomen #southasianstorytellers #hennadesign #hennaart #hennatattoo #hennaartistry #southasianculture #bodyart #bodyarttattoo

For the last day of this week’s theme of books featuring Asian food, I want to share a book that my friend and colleague eagerly shared with me, as it is a favourite with her kids. BILAL COOKS DAAL (written by Aisha Saeed, illustrated by Anoosha Syed, published by Scholastic) is a story about Bilal, a young Pakistani-American boy who loves cooking daal, a traditional South Asian lentil dish, with his dad. Bilal excitedly invites his friends over to cook and enjoy daal together, but he begins to worry whether they will like the unfamiliar dish. As they wait for the daal to cook, Bilal’s friends learn about patience and the value of trying new things But will it be worth the wait? Will Bilal’s friends like daal? BILAL LOVES DAAL is a sweetly written and adorably illustrated story that celebrates diversity, the importance of cultural traditions, and a reminder of how food can connect us to each other and our heritage background. The illustrations are playful and colourful, making this story appealing to young readers. The back matter includes a recipe for chana daal. This book not only introduces children to daal and its significance in South Asian cuisine but it also teaches valuable lessons about open-mindedness, acceptance, and the joy of sharing one’s culture. What books featuring Asian food do you recommend? Don’t forget to participate in this week’s theme and to add #theinclusiveAHMbookshelf and tag me @the_inclusive_bookshelf in your posts!

Behind the scenes: During the design phase we also made use of a lot of paper moulds and forms. These moulds and forms are great to create quick, inexpensive prototypes. They also allowed us to explore different shapes and configurations for our Chai Maker easily, conceptualising and visualising before working out the form factors we wanted to proceed with. Here's a few early paper forms we used during the road to develop of our Chai Maker. Book : MUDSLINGING AND OTHER SHORT STORIES Author : @nauman.afzal.16 Genre : Contemporary fiction No. of pages : 148 Publisher : @auraqpublications MUDSLINGING AND OTHER SHORT STORIES is @nauman.afzal.16 's debut book. A prolific Pakistani author has gracefully penned these thought provoking short stories. This book has been such a blast. At every page and every word it has something to teach. Nauman Afzal knows how to keep the readers hooked till the last page. He has a keen eye for detail and is an absolute observer of our debauched society. Crimes committed on the streets of Pakistan, old school romance, the relation of a father and son, political figures making money out of public's mandate, adding 'Islamic' touch to criminal acts and giving random mentorship through the personification of animals (plants and dog). What I loved about this book is its simple and unique approach towards life. It is easy, classic and simple to understand. It has lessons at every step. The author has mentioned time and again the ruling, class of Pakistan. How the elite overpower the poor such as in the case of Islam ud Din. His demand for his pension which was his fundamental right over the government for serving 38 years of his life at office. Whereas the intricate details made this book mind blowing and something to cherish for the rest of my life. The author has divided it into short, tiny stories. From dirty politics to criminal minds, the rights of animals, humans flawed approach and the double game of the burucrates and businessmen. As a progressive, young mind I came across various ills of our society through this great book. How far we've come as a nation and state but why are we still vulnerable?! Pakistan is a country that is overflowing with young potential but do we lack with resources?! We have perspectives, ideologies and thoughts pertaining to life and the world that we live in but there lies a hidden treasure that sadly we do not know. We don't celebrate the raw and real self that makes us human. The author has rightly spoken about sectarian violence. In a country like Pakistan where religion is often misunderstood, (continued in comments)

‘Tis the season … for tomatoes! 🍅 I love this time of the year when the weather is getting warmer (but not too hot yet), and plants, including tomatoes, are growing and thriving! Today’s book is perfect for this season and this week’s theme of Asian food: TOMATOES FOR NEELA (written by Padma Lakshmi, illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal, published by Viking). Neela loves to cook with her amma. Together, they cook up all sorts of delicious dishes and desserts. On Saturdays— Neela’s favourite day of the week— they go to the green market to buy all sorts of fresh fruit and vegetables. But best of all are the tomatoes! Neela loves making her paati’s (grandmother’s) tomato sauce with her amma because not only is tasty, but it always makes her feel closer to Paati who lives in India. As they cook together, Amma tells Neela stories, including the history of the tomato, and why tomatoes are best when in season. When they are finally done, Neela and Amma carefully put away the jars of their freshly made tomato sauce and chutney, saving one special jar for when Paati comes to visit again. ❤️ This beautiful story of grandmother, mother and daughter perfectly captures how food and recipes can tie a family together, connecting them to their history, culture and heritage. The detailed and softly-coloured illustrations show the love and joy that is shared between Neela and Amma, as well their love for cooking. The back matter includes two recipes, fun facts about tomatoes, and a tribute to the importance of farm workers. Do you like to cook? Do you have any recipes that are passed down within your family? What books featuring Asian food do you recommend? Don’t forget to participate in this week’s theme and to add #theinclusiveAHMbookshelf and tag me @the_inclusive_bookshelf in your posts!

Book : JOURNEY OF THE HEART Author : @thechantingsoul Genre : Poetry No. of pages : 123 Publisher : @auraqpublications JOURNEY OF THE HEART is a beautiful collection of poetry by @thechantingsoul which came out in November, 2021. It is written with utmost kindness, purity and simplicity. This book emphasizes on our inner voice, peace and happiness that lies within us. It is written gracefully in first person narrative and I absolutely loved every bit of it. Poetry is a soulful melody of our heart, mind and soul. I learned the meaning of our existence, purpose and divine power that controls and protects us from all the ill wills of the modern society. The author is clear about his ideas and thoughts. He writes in ways that brings the best out in readers and individuals. All chapters speaks about human vulnerability, law of attraction and our choices. Our destinies, our fate lies in Almighty's hand and therefore it is important to follow the right path "SIRAT UL MUSTAQEEM." Living in a data driven, information warfare I often think about what is coming up?! We are clueless human beings; not knowing what the coming hour has for us. We are rotten souls, torn apart and living life in shadows. This book centers around a beautiful concept of faith in the unseen. Faith in the fashioner. By following His beloved Prophet's life we all can live a life of purpose and divine peace. As the author says that it all starts within. We have an entire universe inside us. He explained the difference between body and soul. How body is physical. It is materialistic. It craves for worldly pleasures and belongings while soul is from the heaven. Up above in the skies and heavens there lies an absolute power, control and divinity Who controls our fates, actions and identities. He is one and is free of everything. ADIL RAZA has divided his book into interesting chapters which covers every little aspects of our lives. From historical human being to today's contemporary man, this book is just mind blowing. It details that how we humans are overpowered and controlled despite the rise of science and technology. Why are we put to extortion every now and then? (Continued in comments)

Book : A DREAM Author : @wajeha__abbasi Genre : Romantic fiction No. of pages : 107 Publisher : @musanifpublishers A DREAM by Wajeha Abbasi is a great book indeed. It revolves around a fifteen year old girl named Essal who often finds herself in the middle of a very terrible chaos. She wants to be an artist but due to the non stop bully, peer pressure and restricted academic standards she is bound to get admission in a medical college. Least interested in sciences, she wants to pursue her passion for art and life. An introvert by nature, shy and simple Essal was tested time and again by her parents who were living in a misinformed world. As a GenZ hailing from Azad Kashmir she finds refuge and an escape in art, love and dreams. Fatima, Essal's mother is a very generic character. She is simple, old school and hurts the sentiments of her daughters. Brown parents who tends to ignore the right side of things fall prey to societal norms and makes life hard for their children. Due to the constant negligence in her childhood, she stays silent but when she meets Sahel in Islamabad, life blossoms in unexpected ways. As a student of fine arts, Essal dreams of a world where enigmatic wonders meet uncertainty, drama meets art and scenic valleys meets colorful meadows. She is a dreamer by heart but life takes an unpredictable route where suffering pain and loss is the only destiny. While reading A DREAM I was transferred to a world where empathy blooms and diverse perspective collides. The character of Essal is just so relatable. Any south Asian girl can definitely relate to her as she is someone who has been through mental torture, stigmas and identify crisis in her teens. I believe that the author has done a great job with the story's ending. How Essal and Sahel ends up being together and both built a life beyond the luxuries that life has to offer. Essal's character has alot of margin. She is sensitive but at the same time she learns from her vulnerability. Her individuality and her existence. After coming all the way from London, she has changed for the better. Noor, Sher, Hairah, Dr. Hamza Fatima, Yasir, Amna, Ali, Aunt Rabia, Faizan and Asim continued in comments

What draws actor Vaishnavi Suryaprakash to a particular script? ‘When there’s something about the character that really excites me, or it speaks to themes I haven't seen before, or opens the conversation in a different way. I’ve found I'm [drawn to] things which have some kind of conversation starter or social message.’ Her latest, Nayika: A Dancing Girl has been so much more than a conversation starter: it’s helping people understand the many different layers involved in intimate partner violence, as well as the attitudes that must change, and the urgent need for new paradigms in tackling the issue. Counting and Cracking, the other South Asian production that won Vaishnavi a #HelpmannAward, continues its success story – travelling soon to Melbourne and then to London. Sending her our very best – and many invigorating (virtual) cups of #chai, with #soanpapdi! (Check out our article to learn context.) #southasianstories #ourownstories #Nayika #actorsofcolour

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms, grandmas, moms-to-be, and mother-figures! To many, this day will be special and sweet, but to many others, today will be a challenging one. Please take some time to care for yourselves today (and any day!)… and maybe that might mean some quiet reading time?? ❤️ WHERE THREE OCEANS MEET (written by Rajani LaRocca, illustrated by Archana Sreenivadan, published by Abrams Books for Young Readers) is a heartwarming, multigenerational story about a young girl, Sejal, her mother, and grandmother who decide to travel together to the most southern tip of India, the end of the earth, where the three oceans are said to meet. And so, by car, train and by boat, Sejal, Mommy, and Pati (“grandma” in Tamil), travel through southern India, enjoying delicious food, shopping at markets, and visiting friends and family along the way. In quieter moments, Sejal learns more about Pati’s childhood, and Mommy’s experiences of being a mother in America. As the three of them continue to spend more time together, and finally reach where the three oceans meet at the most southern tip of India, Sejal finally understands how three entwined as one is stronger than one alone… 💙💚🩶 WHERE THREE OCEANS MEET is the perfect book for Mother’s Day and Asian Heritage Month, fitting nicely into this week’s theme of books featuring grandparents as well! I love everything about this beautiful story, as it celebrates motherhood and strong females. I love how the three oceans are metaphors for Sejal, Mommy, and Pati, and how they entwine with each other. I also love the normalizing of multiple languages spoken within one family, a natural consequence due to diaspora. Finally, I love the bright, lively illustrations, bringing the adventures that Sejal, her mom, and grandma embarked upon to life. As a bonus, the back matter also includes some information about the places Sejal, Mommy and Pati visited in southern India! What books featuring Asian grandparents do you recommend? Don’t forget to participate in this week’s theme and to add #theinclusiveAHMbookshelf and tag me @the_inclusive_bookshelf in your posts so I can give you a shoutout! 🤩

How does language shape cultural identity? And can art serve as a bridge between diverse linguistic and cultural communities? These questions resonate deeply as we ponder Ghulam Mohammad’s work. Having grown up in Baluchistan, Mohammad navigated the complexities of learning Urdu amidst cultural disparities. Through his art, he aims to bridge these divides crafting harmonious compositions of meticulously cut-out Urdu letters on handcrafted wasli paper. This approach reflects his deep understanding of language’s dual nature – its power to both unite and divide. We’re delighted when an artwork embodies the spirit of QissaGoi, reinforcing our commitment to our core values. ‘Tawazun (Balance)’ by Ghulam Mohammad is a prime example of such synergy. Here’s a brand new character, based on the author’s experience as a child. You may know Babita Sharma from her work as a journalist, and news presenter across the BBC and other channels. She’s also written about her memories when young living above a number of corner shops; and, released a book on what those shops say about the UK, their history and what you can tell about someone from their purchases. As such, it is absolutely fitting that in her first children’s book, she’s headed to familiar terrain and introduces us to a brand new sleuthing lead character. Priya Mistry and the Paw Prints Puzzle #BabitaSharma @alipyeillo @hachettechildrens is so absolutely charming. Priya lives above Green Lane Stores. She helps her parents, and knows every inch of the shop. One day she notices some intriguing footprints, collects her mission kit, and sets out to explore. With the help of a lollipop behind her ear, tips from shoppers and a keen sense of adventure, she tracks down the culprit! I really love the images of people chatting and shopping, it’s a slice of life and really catches the eye. I think this would make a lovely gift, there are so many delightful elements to unpack and have fun with at bedtime. Ali Pye’s let us know that she’s working on the next in the series too, will be great to see what Priya gets up to next. I’ve also downloaded a sample of Babita’s non fiction book to check out, that’s called ‘The Corner Shop’. ad - pr sample: I was sent a copy of this book to see what I thought about it. I only share books worth your time checking out in the library at a minimum. #AliPye #HachetteChildrens #NewChildrensBooks #RepresentationMatters #DiversifyYourShelves #ChildrensMysteryBooks #PriyaMistry #KidsBookstagram #KidsBookshelves #ReadingEveryDay #ReadingForPleasure #ReadingTogether #ReadingAloud #CornerShopsOfTheUK #IndianHeritage #SouthAsianHeritage #SouthAsianDiaspora #IndiaBookstagram #LoveYourLibrary #EYFSTeachersOfInstagram #OwnVoices #OwnVoicesChildrensBook #SouthAsianStories

Delighted to share that my new short 'Djinn in the Woodpecker's Eye' is featured in the 38th Edition (South Asian Special) of award-winning international publication: Grimdark Magazine. JUST LOOK AT THE COVER OF THE ISSUE! IT HAS SIKHS ON IT (that has perhaps never happened in the history of SFF). On to my short, DITWE is a story of divine violence which dissects a woodcarver’s family in a world torn asunder by conquest. If you fancy diving into this or any of the nugget-sized sagas by other SA stalwarts (@rrvirdi @yudhanjaya @gautam_bhatia_books and the list goes on), head over to Amazon India and snag a copy of Grimdark Magazine Issue #38 for only INR 99. Big ups to Beth @grimdark.magazine and Mihir @fantasybookcritic for shining a light on South Asian tales. And a shoutout to Adrian @adrianmgibson for the sweet discount, exclusively for Indians (repeating again - just INR 99 on Amazon). This gesture will go a long way in resurrecting the love for fantasy right in the cradle of the genre. Side Note: Usually, I'm all about epic fantasy (>200,000 words) written in third person (thanks to the writs and appeals I'm used to drafting as a lawyer). But hey, growth happens outside the comfort zone. So, I was glad to step out with a short story on the mysterious Djinns written in first person. Hope you'll devour it as eagerly as my editor did. #shortstory #shortstorywriter #southasianstories #indianwriters #authorsofig #bipocwriters

Phulkari, translated as ‘flower work’ is a unique embroidery technique that uses colourful threads to create intricate floral patterns on fabric. This tradition, passed down through generations, holds immense significance and sentimental value for the people of Punjab. For a substantial period, the region of Nabha in Punjab, India, struggled with economic disparity and gender bias that perpetuated the subordinate status of women within societal structures. Amidst this, Nabha Phulkari emerged as a transformative change, breaking chains and empowering women with employment and a gateway to participation in the society. Once forgotten, this craft now dances on fabric, revived by the skilled hands of Nabha’s women artisans. In this revival journey, the Faizal & Shabana Foundation, in collaboration with the All India Artisans and Craftworkers Welfare Association (AIACA), has played a pivotal role. Their support has preserved a national craft and empowered women, creating a narrative that’s a testament to their skill, resilience, and cultural pride. Really thrilled to have an article in today’s Observer magazine! It’s about me, my mum and the sari, and my emotionally conflicted relationship towards it through the years. The sari also runs through my book, ‘What’s In a Name?’ and how as children we often internalised all the hostility towards it from the outside world. I’ve included a picture here of me and my cousin Mousumi (@mokanjilalwilliams) wearing saris recently at a family wedding - something we decided to do after being given our mum’s saris. #saristories #britishindianstories #whatsinaname #britishindianwomen #southasianstories #observermagazine #guardiannewspaper
