Here’s my story… One night at @sadienardiniofficial Yoga & Wine retreat in Montalcino one of the participants asked me: „What do do for living?“ I replied: „I currently work for a company specializing on Social Media Management… But I’m actually a singer and vocal coach.” She said: “You are a singer and vocal coach? Can you sing us a song?” I sang one of my original songs a cappella right at the restaurant and made everybody cry…including myself. I remembered how much it means to me to make people happy by using my talent. Next @sadienardiniofficial and @athome11215 asked me: “Can you give us a workshop? Can I take a singing lesson with you?” I just said: “Yes.” That night I went to bed with a big smile on my face. I had no idea what was going to happen next. Ever wondered how to find your way back to your true calling? I took a break from teaching voice while I was travelling the world and living abroad. At some point my back issues got pretty severe when I started to practice yoga with @sadienardiniofficial and decided to train with her on a regular basis. I attended her fantastic online teacher trainings and decided to join her for her annual Yoga and Wine retreat in Tuscany / Italy. Back then I was working for a Social Media Management Company in Copenhagen and commuted between Sweden and Denmark every day. I got on a plane to Rome and met my fellow Yogis at the airport to continue our journey to Montalcino where we all enjoyed a lot of yoga, meditation, conversation, laughing, food and vino of course. Watching Sadie teach us and learning so much about myself and my body actually made me miss singing and teaching. At this point I have already worked professionally as a singer and vocal coach for a very long time and went on a sabbatical for a couple of years. Loving the way this new design has turned out! The stain is just as rich several days on 👌 It's time to reveal my new colour pallet! Featuring a combination of the traditional copper Henna stain made from crushed leaves of the Henna plant. Now welcoming into the mix, deep blues from the pulp of the Jagua fruit from the plant Genepa Americana. As always nature does it best and these dyes are purely plant based. Both of these species have been used in creating ritualistic body art for thousands of years and I feel very special to have access to them and continue to share the hand craft of body painting. Medicinal as well as beautiful, these plants have also been used to treat skin conditions and soothe aches and pains on the body. ⭐ SPOTLIGHT: Johnnie Bubar A nationally recognized musician and entertainer, Johnnie Bubar is the 2013 Massachusetts Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, and a 2012 New Hampshire Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee! As an IAFE Associate member, Johnnie performs across the country at fairs and festivals, in addition to touring with his American Dream Tribute Show honoring active duty military, veterans, and first responders. Johnnie sat down with us to chat about his career, how he got started, and his experience at Bristol Studios... Melissa Campbell: How do you feel Bristol Studios helped you in developing your career? Johnnie Bubar: Oh, tremendously. In my opinion, [my career] wouldn't have been there without [Bristol's vocal training]. I learned to listen, you know, learned how to hit the notes that you're supposed to hit, and how to actually form the notes with your mouth, breathing exercises, and everything in between. I tell you, between Patrice and Ric, holy smokes, yes. And then Chris, too! Chris is great. He's absolutely wonderful. MC: How did your career start to take off after coming to Bristol? What highlights were there along the way? JB: Well, first of all, it was more of a confidence thing. When you know you're doing it right - which they teach you how to do, and why to do it that way - if you have confidence in what you're doing, and you know you're doing it right, you become more bold in what you do. It's so much easier to be bold, and, at least for me, I do take more chances that way. It doesn't bother me to take a chance to drive across the country to do a show when you know you can do it well. "After a yoga session, Alexandra gave us a vocal workshop. Although it was not mandatory, every single person stayed for the workshop as we were all intrigued with being led by someone who we all had heard sing during one of our dinners where we were all struck by her talent and joy that literally radiated in the room. In that workshop, we were amazed at the skill-set and wealth of knowledge as we all worked through vocal exercises and different breathing techniques to optimize the use of our voices - what she did improved ALL of our voices and we were just amazed and astounded at how by following her lead, it became such a special occasion of exploration - we were all so happy we participated. Armed with their acoustic sound material, springs, coil, toys, and some electronics, they create four pieces (around fourteen minutes) of brutalist electro-acoustic music, veering towards the noise end of things while maintaining clarity in sounds, which is a rare thing. They hit, scratch and scrape but keep their music together all along, i.e. it sounds less improvised, which I enjoy very much. The music reminds me of AMM, Morphogenesis, Kapotte Muziek and Kontakta, and other contact microphone abusers, of course. On the other side, there is Coims. I heard music by Coims before (see Vital Weekly 1184). I have no idea who is behind this project. Still, I learned they are a duo, "using heavily processed/manipulated guitar, vocal and percussion", but I believe I also heard a clarinet. Like much else on this label, this is improvised music, more so than the music on the other side of the cassette. They have five relatively short pieces of music, in which improvisations melt with lo-fi drones post-punky guitar treatments and without all too chaotic and nervous trashing around.
