The Magic Callaloo This book reads like a modern fable and I was captivated by this story which feels both fresh and timeless. It’s a story of a magical wish-granting plant, a greedy man, a couple desperate for a baby and a kidnapped girl who can’t find her way home. A mysterious woman helps the girl by braiding a map into her hair to help her escape and return to her village. Inspired by stories of slaves who braided messages and maps into hair via cornrows, this story felt like a modern Rapunzel with added magic, mystery and danger. I loved the authors note, giving details about their inspiration for this story in the history of her ancestors, it made this book feel so much more special. This book is joyous from cover to cover, from the rich artwork to the celebration of black hair, and the joy of finding your way home. This is a truly special book which we’ve really enjoyed. Wild places can have a profound impact on you and I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some truly epic and remote landscapes. In the past a lot of my big outdoor projects have been solo efforts covering months at a time and thousands of miles across backcountry areas but recently I’ve come to appreciate slowing down and traveling through wild places with my friends and experiencing the wilderness as a community. River trips are a beautiful picture of how friendship should be. It’s a communal effort to make camp, find firewood, share gear and clothing if necessary, and safely navigate the rivers obstacles. This past float down the Smith River brought together a group of friends, old and new, who value and love wild places and lean into the relationships that are cultivated there. We came together when weather beat us down, when the river flipped boats, and when the dinner call came. I never want to float this river alone. My friends at @oakloredistillingco have a similar ethos. They believe like I do that wild and remote places are where friendships are distilled down to their core and it was a beautiful thing to have had them on this float as a part of our crew. #shareastory #shareaglass #oakloredistillingco

Ivy Newt and the Swamp Dragons It’s #chapterbooktuesday and today I’m sharing the third in this series of fabulous witchy stories (although it could be read as a stand-alone too) Ivy is off to visit her granny and take a look at the migrating dragons in the swamp. But when an out-of-date bottle of magical bubble bath starts creating doubles of everything it touches, things soon get out of control. Will Ivy and Tom (her familiar) be able to put things right? I really enjoyed this chapter book series. So much thought has gone into place names and the descriptions of Miracula, there are always a few puns to raise a smile! The story is adventurous but not scary, and it moves along at pace. The chapters are short and are filled with illustrations (some small, some almost taking up the full double page) which helps the transition from picture book to chapter book. I’m looking forward to the next instalment of this fabulously magical series. This is a continuation of my previous story: I went to the supermarket the lady had suggested to buy Ajvar, but it didn't feel authentic as it was large-scale commercial production. Next, I stopped at this beautiful little café in Skadarlija, Belgrade, to have a quick break. To make conversation with the server, I asked him if he knew where I could find local Ajvar, and he recommended the weekend market where they sold freshly made Ajvar just 5 minutes walking from the café. He also mentioned that it was 6:30 pm, so it was highly unlikely to find it now. Nevertheless, he said I should go and try. I did as he said and came to a place where people had already packed up with the exception of a strawberry stand and a smiling woman who didn't speak English. I walked up to her and showed her the paper the woman from the magnet shop had given me, and she nodded her head as her smile became larger. I understood I was at the right place and hadn't missed my last chance. I happily bought the bottle, spoke to her son, who was 9, and was learning English in school. I packed my two glass bottles of Ajvar and put them in my suitcase. The next morning, I had to take my plane back home, and I was happy to have taken a gift that my husband really wanted, but the security man at the airport did not allow me to take either of the bottles and to my despair, I had to throw away both my bottles of Ajvar. Finally, I bought a commercial one from he duty free. These are my stories from the streets of Belgrade today: 1. Instincts - I was walking in the streets to buy some souvenirs when I saw a papercraft stand; it had beautiful paperquilled magnets. I looked through them and wanted to buy two - that of a traditional Romanian man and a traditional Romanian woman, but looking at the price I settled for 1 - only the woman. The lady said I could only pay by cash and directed me to the ATM from where I withdrew the cash I needed. In that second, while withdrawing money, I also decided not to go back because I thought the magnet I wanted to buy was too expensive. I started walking in the opposite direction. Indecisive as I am, I went back thinking that I might not find it in another shop. The lady was happy to see me; I tried my luck and asked if I could get a discount, and to my surprise she said she couldn't offer me a discount, but a second magnet (of the traditional Romanian man) to complete the couple❤️❤️ 2. Goodness attracts - After exploring the place for a while, I remembered I had to buy Ajvar (traditional pepper sauce) and when I couldn't find it, I decided to walk back to the woman who sold me the magnets (because she spoke English and she was polite). I asked her where I could find the sauce, and she sweetly wrote down the name of the sauce on a paper and sent me off to the place where I could find it. Old Oak and the Wildflowers - Book Tour Old Oak watches over the barley field, seeing seasons change and crops grow. But this year is different. The winter was long and the summer is hot, many of the insects and birds are leaving to find food elsewhere, and the barley crop is thin, making the farmer stressed. After the harvest, the field looks to be abandoned, has the farmer forgotten it? But when spring comes, the farmer and his wife plant seeds again and in summer the field is transformed into a beautiful wildflower meadow, encouraging wildlife back to the farm. This beautiful book gently weaves messages of conservation and rewilding into its stunningly illustrated pages. I love that the story is told as a discussion between the Old Oak and a shield bug which makes it observational and non-judgemental. Coming from a farming family, I know that it’s not an easy job. Farming practices and policies aim to get the most profit from the land but are sometimes unintentionally damaging to the environment, but things are changing. Diversity of planting (like growing wildflowers, as well as planting trees and hedgerows) welcomes birds, insects, pollinators and other wildlife back to farmland which can be very beneficial for crops and livestock. I noted that the book mentions that farming continued in other fields around the old barley field too. Gigi is a bug-lover and shield bugs are her favourite! She was delighted to see one in this book! I really enjoyed that the story focussed on the importance and benefits of insects and birds, not just in parks and gardens but in farms too, and we lived spotting all the wildlife in the illustrations from tiny bugs to pheasants and foxes. This Is The Ship That Jack Built We’ve really enjoyed this twist on “the house that Jack built”. Jack’s gold is safely stowed in the hold of his ship, but a rat steals the gold, setting of a chain of events that see a cat, a whale, a squid, a hill, a turtle and more sea animals get involved. Will Jack ever be able to get the gold back in the hold. This book has come at the perfect time as Milo’s topic at school this month is under the sea and they’ve been doing lots of pirate play too. Tree Explore a whole ecosystem through the lens of a single tree in today’s #sundaybedtimestory “This tree is older than those who find it, younger than the land it grows from” We love Claire Saxby and Jess Racklyeft’s previous book, Iceberg, so I couldn’t wait to read their new book, all about a tree. Explore right from the roots, to high up in the canopy and see the animals, birds and insects that make their homes around this tree. We learn about the lifecycle of trees from the leaf litter and dead wood, and how they help to clean and recycle the air we breathe. This glorious non-fiction looks at natural ecosystems in an absolutely stunning way. This book is based on a mountain ash tree which managed to survive recent forest fires in Australia. We loved learning about the Australian animals who live in and around the tree from lyre birds to echidna and from greater gliders to wombats. We’ve been looking them up to find out further information about them. The wombats are Gigi’s favourites and echidnas are mine - I spotted one in the wild on a holiday to Tasmania once and have been fascinated by them ever since! The illustrations are absolutely stunning and we especially love the enormous fold-out page showing the immense size of this tree. The soothing, gentle tones make this an absolutely stunning book to look at.
