I thought I’d share a funny story today for #TheFictionFeast ! When a dog is given a strawberry it turns into “the greatest race of all time”. You might think a race between a dog and a piece of fruit would be boring, but you’d be wrong! When I started book blogging in about 2016 there weren’t many children’s books that catered to a Muslim kid’s everyday life. Yes, there were many books about the holidays and Muslim kids as refugees. But where was the literary content about the everyday Muslim kid’s life? Their goals, dreams, aspirations or basic kid problems? Such books were definitely scanty in number. Alhamdulliah with time this gap has been filling with soulful work by Muslim authors across the world. The boy, The Burnt Samosa, and The Unforgettable Cane was written to fill in and address this gap. This book is for the dreamers, the lovers of science and invention. The ones whose hands itch to tinker, make, and create. It’s for the dreamers. The kids who break only to remake. The kids that do things their way, and are on a mission to stay true to themselves, guided and encouraged by loving family members. It’s a message to kids and to all, to never give up, to just keep swimming, despite the obstacles, the failures, and the challenges. It’ll all be worth it in the end. I PROMISE it will. A #BringTheTissuesAlert for one of my favorite new picture books of 2024. This is one of those books that is fantastic already but reaches a whole new level when you know the back story. The incomparable Nikki Grimes gives us the beautiful story of a father who, gone too soon, leaves his son the gift of one final walk in the woods. Jerry Pinkney and Grimes envisioned this book and dreamed of working on it together, but when Jerry Pinkney passed away in 2021 the task of finishing the art fell to his son, renowned illustrator Brian Pinkney, and life truly began to imitate art. This is a stunning book in every sense of the word and it has a subtly unfinished feel to it that is perfect for the story. I think this is one that will go on my forever shelf and it is the perfect blend of its creators and the perfect legacy for a master like Jerry Pinkney to leave. This one gets all the stars. Uno dei due ha anche il vizio di saltarci sul letto e venire con il musino vicino il nostro viso, apro gli occhi e vedo che mi guarda un po’ come dire : Ci sei ??? Ti alzi ??? Poi salta dal lato di mio marito e fa lo stesso con lui 🤣🤣🤣 Adoro la colazione, per me è un momento sacro. Quando mi siedo davanti al mio tavolo da lavoro, pieno di colori e comincio a disegnare, entro in un’altra dimensione. La pausa tè/tisana+libro, leggo ogni sera prima di andare a dormire e ogni mattina appena sveglia, a parte i momenti di blocco (ma sono rari) solitamente porto avanti più di una cosa : un romanzo, due/tre serie dei miei manga preferiti, una graphic novel e albi illustrati. La sera appena entro nel mio letto, mi sento sempre molto fortunata ad averne uno. Questi sono i primi momenti che mi vengono in mente… E voi?? Aww! A Mother’s Love- nothing more pure and unconditional. Yet, the greatest heartbreak when mom is not around. Milko is a story of a young boy who misses his momma who is away in Ethiopia 🇪🇹. He misses her embrace, her delicious foods, her smile, and her laugh! His little sister is unconsolable without momma. And dad misses her dearly too. But after the heartache and longing, Mama returns and all is well again. What a beautiful book! The lyrical text invokes so many emotions and highlights the many roles a mother serves, as caregiver, cook, nurturer, playmate, etc. The illustrations are divine. The color palette is so sweet and soothing and show the passage of time across a year. Most importantly it touches upon a theme rarely seen in books. Many children have to go long periods without their moms, and this book validates all those feelings of loss. It’s a perfect read aloud for Mother’s Day! It celebrates a mother’s love and care. Frida the Rock and Roll Moth We have been loving reading Frida the rock and roll moth at bedtime and it’s my pic for this week’s #Sundaybedtimestory. Frida loves playing rock and roll music LOUD on her purple guitar, wearing her pointy boots, but when she sees all the other rock ‘n’ roll moths in their fabulous outfits, singing their amazing songs, she begins to doubt herself. Auntie Edna is on hand to cheer and let Frida know that she shines exactly as she is, but Frida feels that she needs to change everything, her outfit, her boots and even her purple guitar. When her new guitar causes a disaster, Frida decides she needs to change it all again. Some kind words from Auntie Edna help build her confidence and make her see that she’s amazing just as she is. We love this sweet story about being brave enough to be yourself, and have confidence in who you are. Frida is the coolest moth we know, and it’s super to have a book featuring a little rocker! Lines that Wiggle by Candace Whitman (illustrated by Steve Wilson) + Wikki Stix! I love a good picture book + activity pair, and these two just work so well together. Lines that Wiggle is delightfully full of color and zany illustrations, and it provides a great entry to discussing the power of line in artmaking. Wikki Stix are an incredible tool for developing fine motor skills, learning colors, and building shapes. Wikki Stix stick to themselves as well as most surfaces, allowing children to make 2D or 3D creations, which I love!
A friendship story for the ages that really tugged at my heart strings! In Built to Last we meet two boys who work together and use their imaginations to build epic creations. But what they don’t realize is that is that along the way, they are also building far greater than what’s in front of them - an amazing friendship. Every time one of their creations falls apart, they pick up the pieces and put together something bigger and better than before. And when their biggest one tumbles they learn it was in fact built to last. It’s such a beautiful representation of friendship and how when it’s built together it can withstand just about anything because it’s built to last. Because, in most cases, it’s when we fall apart that we are brought closer together.

I have siblings with birthdays in May, but none of my kids, except for the baby I miscarried a couple years ago,would have had a May birthday. Here Be Giants Giant folklore is part of life growing up in Northern Ireland. We’ve got the Giant’s Causeway, heroic stories of Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool) and plenty of other evidence in our landscapes and stories… but I’ve never actually seen one. Have you? Perhaps, as our knight friend is about to find out, they may be closer than we think. Following on from Here Be Dragons, our hapless knight and his horse are off on a new quest to find a giant. Thankfully the princess is also back, and happens to set off on her own giant-quest at the same time. As the knight reads from his book, looking out for signs of giants, we see him climbing up the giant’s body, and right into his sandwich, despite warnings from the princess and his horse. We especially love the page where he mistakes the giant’s drool for rain! Thankfully the fearless princess comes to his rescue once again, using the knight’s umbrella to defeat the giant (we LOVE this bit!). This is such a clever book where the reader, and frankly everyone else, can see what’s going on, even when the main character can’t, and the illustrations really do tell the story. There’s almost a wordless picture book feel to this as the text only gives one side of the story. This book has been a favourite here and we often read both this and Here Be Dragons together. BOOKS FOR MOTHER’S DAY 📚 I of course believe that mothers should be celebrated every day, but with Mother’s Day around the corner I wanted to take the opportunity to share some of my favorite mom books. 📚 This list has been carefully crafted over the past couple of years, but I added two newer books to the list recently. 📚 MAMA AND MOMMY AND ME IN THE MIDDLE by @nina_lacour and @kaylanijuanita is a beautiful book about a little girl who has to spend a week away from one of her parents. Mommy heads off on a work trip and while Mama tries to fill the time and void, she still feels big feelings about the absence. I think this is such a relatable topic for so many families and it is addressed with such warmth and care on these pages. 📚 THE MOMMIES ON THE BUS by Hannah Eliot and @airinocallaghan take a familiar tune and adds new words. Moms and kids alike will relate to the words, pictures and experience of riding the bus. Tonight’s book is one of my favorites from the Bright Feelings series. Finn starts with one little fib that turns into a whole bunch. Each time he tells one-a new little blob appears. Soon he has lost control. He learns an important lesson on being honest, even when it’s hard. Lola and Ben really like this series. The bright visuals always get them talking and sharing their feelings. Definitely a good one to add to your SEL collection.
