If intergenerational picture books are your jam, this sweet new release is for you. My favorite part of my grandparents’ visits from the Dominican Republic was always the many treats they would bring for us, mostly sweet delights you would never find in NYC. In A Maleta Full of Treasures we meet a young girl named Dulce who feels similarly about her abuela’s visits. Her visits came with suitcases full of treasures for her to enjoy. What I love most about the story, though, is how when it’s time for Abuela’s departure, Dulce wants to help fill it up with treasures to take back home and share with her extended family. When you have extended families that are separated by borders an important part of being reunited again is bringing treasures back and forth for not only everyone to enjoy but to remember you by when you are separated again. I felt I needed to share these iconic Joy Berry behavior books that my mom got for us when we were little. I was delighted to see they’re still around at libraries & on thriftbooks, and the topics range from being a good sport when you’re playing games or athletic events to lying or tattling. These are all topics that come up pretty frequently with younger kids. I like the cartoon aspect of these books, but they actually have several scenarios that display the character trait or habit to be worked on. I think my kids also like that there’s normally a pet who accompanies the child throughout the book and tries to give them advice as well. While there isn’t like a cute storyline per se, I do like how straightforward each book is in explaining the kinds of desirable behaviors that help our kids learn to be the humans we need in this world. I’ve been holding out on all of you. Because my family read this book aloud last year and let’s just say it’s another one of those books that is going to stay with me long after our family read alouds come to an end. It’s a book about a rover, named Resilience (Res), built by NASA scientists to explore planet Mars. After it’s launched, it realizes the mission is tougher than expected and it has to work hard to try to live up to its name and conquer the terrain. What Res wasn’t built for is where you will find the heart of this book. And if you never thought you would develop feelings for a robot ... well, you’ve never met this one. As the story develops, readers become so invested in Res’ survival. My son and I found ourselves feeling for this robot in the same way it started to develop and process human emotions. And all of a sudden, it goes from a story about space exploration to one about courage, determination and resilience. After you read this book, you will never think of a Mars Rover the same way again.

The pacing of this book was steady and the way the events played out along with the humour was really enjoyable. There are some truths about couches you may not be aware of and author Adam Rubin is laying it all out in the newly released (and hilarious) The Truth About The Couch. You may think couches are just for sitting or napping (my preferred couch use). But in this new story readers learn all about the laugh-out-loud conspiracies associated with couches, like how they need a steady diet of coins and remote controls and how some of them are grown in farms. Although some of these truths may be questionable, all of them make for a super fun read aloud about one of the world’s most beloved pieces of furniture. Father’s Day is exactly one month away and I’ve got the perfect book for you to share with a special dad in your life. The newly released I’m Proud of You is such a wonderful celebration of the bond between fathers and sons. It takes readers through the ups and downs a boy experiences throughout his days and shows them how his dad is there giving him unwavering support and being proud of him every step of the way. I don’t usually enjoy books written by celebrities but I love how this one perfectly encapsulates the pride all parents feel for their children and will truly warm the heart of anyone who reads it. I also love how a black dad and son are at the forefront as well as a biracial family. I can never get enough of this (still) much needed representation in kid lit. #gifted

I am sure I’m not the only parent going through this, but I have a super shy and timid child who is not looking forward to starting school (kindergarten) next year. So I have been looking at books that can help us make the transition, somewhat peaceably. I’ve gone back-and-forth whether it would be best to homeschool or send her to public school so she can interact with her peers. And at the end of the day, everyone needs to do what’s best for their individual child. I think that some interaction through school is good for her since the only other social/athletic thing she does is dance right now. There has been a lot of discourse in this space about the current state middle grade. The biggest complaint being how it lacks kid appeal and is written for adults. So let me start off by saying that the book I’m sharing today may in fact lack that initial kid appeal. And as an adult, I enjoyed reading it. BUT, by no means does that mean you should not share this story with the older kids in your life (ages 10+). I would say you MUST. The book starts off with a 7th grader named Caprice who has been offered a scholarship to attend the school of her dreams. And while it should be a happy time for her, she’s experiencing a ton of internal doubt stemming from some abuse she endured from her uncle when she was younger that she has not told anyone about. She’s also gotten news that her estranged grandmother has fallen ill and is near death. The story is heavy, raw and tough to read at times. I wanted to reach through its pages, give Caprice a hug and tell her everything was going to be ok. But the author handled it with such grace and by the end leaves readers in a much more hopeful place, rooting from the sidelines for Caprice. It’s a coming of age story about a girl who is going through so much at this time in her life. It made me think - gosh - this book may not “appeal” to a wide range of kids but it can do two REALLY important things: It can offer so much courage and support to another child who is in the same position as Caprice. It can also help other children be allies to friends who may be in a similar position as Caprice. And while this isn’t what many would put into the bucket of “kid appeal” isn’t this what we are hoping our kids gain from at least some of their reading? I included this book among other new picture books for celebrate mothers recently but it spoke to me so much that it deserved its own spot on the feed. I Would Love You Still brings us a parent on a trip to the zoo with their child. And the outing inspires them to list all the ways they love their child. No matter how wild, silly or messy their love never wavers. It’s the perfect celebration of that special bond between parent and child. I cannot think of a better way to honor grandmothers than with the newly released Gaga Mistake Day, which encapsulates so much of what we adore about them. In the story, a mischievous grandma is with her granddaughter for the day and what a fun-filled day it is! From walking backwards in the park to switching glasses and reading books upside down, bountiful “mistakes” result in lots of silly, goofy, whimsical, joyful moments that make their time together so special. It’s a wonderful book to celebrate the magic of grandparents and how much fun can be had when you take a little time to color outside the lines. #gifted

Sing It Like Celia had me hooked from the first few pages! 12 year old protagonist Salva is going through some huge life changes - her mom mysteriously disappeared and as a result she’s living with her father, who she barely knows, in a campground in the middle of nowhere. Salva misses her mom dearly and everything from her old life but tries to acclimate to her new environment while trying to figure out what happened to her mother. She meets a group of campground kids who have started a band. When they discover her beautiful singing voice and love of Celia Cruz’s music, they convince her to join the group. And with their help, Salva learns the power of her voice and how to stand up for herself. The story is a good mix of mystery and drama and shines a light on all the complications that come with family and friendship. It’s incredibly touching, has a ton of heart and, although I may be biased, I love the Latinx representation. #gifted
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 🐉 I have had this book on my TBR pile for months now, and when I finally got around to reading it this month, I simply could not put it down. I was enthralled! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up loving this story since it took a few chapters for me to warm to it. 📚 Sai is an assistant to Mangokon’s most cherished mapmaker, Master Paiyoon. Although she plays the part of a well-bred young lady, the truth is that her father is a low-life con man, but Sai is determined to change her fate. When she is given the opportunity to join an expedition to map out the southern seas, she jumps at the opportunity to start her new life, despite the dangers it could bring when she also learns that the ship is heading for the legendary Sunderlands - a land of dragons! This epic sea adventure story is about loyalty and friendship, bravery, and courage and doing what’s best for the greater good. There are so many brilliant twists and turns throughout this story that it kept me intrigued and eager to continuereading. This spectacular story was a truly epic tale with a most satisfying resolution. A friendship story for the ages that really tugged at my heart strings! In Built to Last we meet two boys who work together and use their imaginations to build epic creations. But what they don’t realize is that is that along the way, they are also building far greater than what’s in front of them - an amazing friendship. Every time one of their creations falls apart, they pick up the pieces and put together something bigger and better than before. And when their biggest one tumbles they learn it was in fact built to last. It’s such a beautiful representation of friendship and how when it’s built together it can withstand just about anything because it’s built to last. Because, in most cases, it’s when we fall apart that we are brought closer together.

The only thing “wrong” with Amari and The Night Brothers is that it took me so long to read it! Amari’s brother Quinton has been missing for six months and she is determined to find him. One night she discovers a ticking briefcase in his closet marked for her eyes only. In it she finds a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Certain this bureau contains the key to locating Quinton, Amari embarks on a journey to become a junior agent in a world full of aliens, supernatural creatures and even black magic. Amari is an incredibly likeable character full of heart and her own Black Girl Magic. She never gives up on trying to find her brother and along the way takes readers on an epic adventure full of mystery, action and some crazy plot twists. The ending left me and my son craving more of this story. We cannot wait to dive into Book 2 and are excited for the release of Book 3 later this summer.
Never has tooting been cuter than in the newly released Cute Toot! A game of hide and seek between sisters takes a turn when one sister’s tummy is full of bubbly gas she has a hard time keeping in. After she lets one out, what proceeds is an epic fart contest where one surprise guest will take the funkiest prize. Regardless of how you feel about this sort of humor, I dare you and your kiddos to make it through this read without a few fart sounds and endless giggles. #gifted

This new release will definitely be a part of my favorite picture books of 2024! Mama’s Panza is the cutest story about boy and his love for his mother and her panza (Spanish for belly). In the story,he talks about all the reasons his mother’s belly is loveable and it’s a wonderful celebration of all the bellies that bring life into this world. The book made me think of how much I have always loved the softness of my own mother’s embrace and how my son still, at almost 10 years old, asks for me to snuggle with him almost daily. But most important - this book is a beautiful reminder to all of us mamas whose bellies may not look the same way they did before childbirth that our bellies do not define our worth and our babies love us with or without them. #gifted

I have been reading a lot of great books in my house lately and one of them is Outlaw Girls by Emily Gale and Nova Weetman. This is the second collaboration for Middle grade historical fiction from these two talented authors and it’s a corker. If my mother is to be believed, our family are related to Ned Kelly. Something I was very proud of when I was a kid… I was fascinated by everything Ned and Dan But I knew very little about Kate Kelly and now, thanks to the incredible Nova and Emily, I know much more. Part historical fiction part time slip novel, we delve into the world of Kate Kelly, bushrangers, crooked police and best friends who timeslip 140 years to be together. Loved it. I can’t wait to be on a panel with Nova and Samera Kamaleddine at the Sydney Writers Festival on Sunday, May 26. The Baker Street Mystery is aimed at Children ages 9-12 years but to be honest I absolutely enjoyed this short read! I really enjoyed the way the story is created, Aria and Liam are school students that manage to get themselves into the thick of the mysteries, this time being Sherlock Holmes orientated. The concept is brilliant and it's a really good way to introduce history to younger kids. The story captured me, I loved the mystery, the characters and the writing style is easy to follow. The Baker Street Mystery is aimed at Children ages 9-12 years but to be honest I absolutely enjoyed this short read! I really enjoyed the way the story is created, Aria and Liam are school students that manage to get themselves into the thick of the mysteries, this time being Sherlock Holmes orientated. The concept is brilliant and it's a really good way to introduce history to younger kids. The story captured me, I loved the mystery, the characters and the writing style is easy to follow. Date: Aug. 13, 2024 ****QoTD: As a child did you tend to be bold or did you shy away from adventurous things?**** Tali observes other children as they tumble, roll, swing in all kinds of activities. She would like to join them, but she is fearful and holds back. Through a dream, a chicken who turns into a toucan visits her and shows her how to get over her fear. Beautifully illustrated, this might work best with a child who is fearful of trying a particular sport or activity. I’m not sure all children would know what “dojo” is (an activity in which Tali wants to participate), so the adult reading the book may have to explain. Just as the little engine who could was an inspiration to try things when I was a child, Tali and the Toucan can give children a mantra to repeat (I tou-can) when fearful of doing something. Whenever I say to myself I’m not a fan of historical fiction, life puts brilliant, captivating books like Across So Many Seas in front of me. Told from the perspective of four young Latina girls of different generations, this book is the poignant exploration of Jewish displacement across the span of over 500 years. The story starts in Spain and ends in Miami with stops in Turkey and Cuba and dives deep into the world of forced migration of the Jewish community. Readers get to meet four strong females each on a quest for belonging, standing on the shoulders of their ancestors and united by love and music. It’s a story about family, grief, immigration, women’s freedom, exile, friendship, faith and perseverance. So many themes packed into this neat little package. I just LOVE how it all came together in the very end and know you will enjoy learning about this important history as well. #gifted
𝗕𝗲𝗱𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 💜 Last year felt like one looooong hard day for us in our family, for many reasons that I won't get into here, but this lovely picture book would have been a welcomed and helpful read aloud at bedtime and I'm so thankful to have a copy of it now. This special picture book includes a wonderful collection of poetic short stories, each one uplifting and unique, depending on your little ones' needs for that evening. There is a story for when you're feeling sad or scared, anxious or full of energy. Each poem eloquently describes a ‘big feeling’ little ones might experience often before bedtime and calmly soothes them through those feelings with hopeful rhymes and playful illustrations. As a parent, I really appreciate books that give us the tools needed to help all of us, not just children, respond to disability. Because disabled people are just like we are, and deserve to be treated the same way. In You’re So Amazing! readers get to catch up with Joe again who’s tired of being called Amazing Joe or Poor Joe. He just wants to be Joe. Despite playing ordinary playground games, everyone around keeps talking about how amazing he is just because he’s disabled. Will he ever get to be just Joe? Many of us are used to disability being framed as inspiration or pity. And books like this one are striving to let it be otherwise - let it be normal. You’re So Amazing! is such a delightful follow-up to What Happened ToYou? And is so deserving of a spot on everyone’s bookshelves. I cannot recommend it enough! #gifted
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🏆 SSYRA Junior 24-25 🏆 Henry has autism and likes his routine. One day, the teacher adds something new to the calendar, a hat parade on Friday. Henry cannot accept this change because Friday is Share Time. Since the parade will be on Friday, Share Time gets moved to Thursday and Henry has a very difficult time with this change. He can’t eat at lunch, play at recess, and he even has butterflies in his stomach all morning. Even though Henry loves Share Time, he decides to go to the nurse on Thursday because Share Time is supposed to be on Friday. Henry goes through a lot this week, but there is a happy ending! If you think you’re not a fan of nonfiction picture books, you’ve never read a book by Nicola Davies. She’s incredible at taking really big topics and breaking them down in a way that makes them easy to digest and accessible to young children. And she does this brilliantly in her latest book. Green: The Story of Plant Life on Our Planet is a beautiful look at the biology of green life on Earth, why it’s so important and why we should treasure it. Paired with Emily Sutton’s gorgeous illustrations, the book is amazing from start to finish. It’s the sort of book that helps children learn how all forms of life on Earth are interconnected and gets everyone who reads it excited about preserving it. It highlights the important role green plants, specifically, play in our ecosystem. And will leave you even more appreciative of all the plant life we have on our planet. #gifted
