I try to refrain from hyperbole, so you won't see me using words like "jawdropping" and "breathtaking." I also shy away from acronyms like "OMG." But after yesterday's visit to Cable John Cove, near #Bonavista #Newfoundland, all I can say is "OMG, the scenery is breathtakingly jawdropping." These pics only somewhat convey the wild, raw nature of the place. The trail (barely visible in pic 7) meanders along the cliffs for miles. You get to the top of one hill and THAT view is better than the one you just saw. It's hard to know when to head back to the car. #UNESCO named this a World #Geosite, dubbing it The Chimney. Haystack Rock at high tide, from a different perspective, on a cold and drizzly day, March 18, 2009, when Jennifer and I visited Cannon Beach, Oregon.
Haystack Rock is a 235-foot-tall sea stack in Cannon Beach, Oregon. It is often stated locally to be the third-tallest such intertidal structure in the world, but there are no supporting credible references for this claim. A popular tourist destination on the Oregon Coast, the monolithic rock is adjacent to the beach and accessible by foot at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs. The rock is also a nesting site for many sea birds, including terns and puffins. Haystack Rock is composed of basalt and was formed by lava flows emanating from the Blue Mountains and Columbia basin about 15–17 million years ago. The lava flows came from massive eruptions from a source believed to be what is now the Yellowstone volcanic hotspot, and created many of the Oregon coast's natural features. Haystack Rock was once joined to the coastline but years of erosion have since separated the monolith from the coast. Three smaller, adjacent rock formations to the south of Haystack Rock are called “The Needles.” The sea stack formation was closed temporarily during July 2023 after a cougar was documented, for the first time, climbing on the rock in search of prey.

Monochrome Seascape - , Dyrhólaey, South Iceland The long cold Icelandic winters transform the landscape surrounding the black beaches into an almost monochrome scene - the only exception being the hints of colour present on the sea stack. This image was captured from the viewpoint at Dyrhólaey which looks along the famous Reynisfjara beach towards the equally popular sea stacks at Vik. Guten Morgen, ihr Lieben ☕️🥐 Nun sind wir an der Nordspitze der Insel und damit am Wahrzeichen von Helgoland, der Langen Anna, angekommen. Natürlich kannte ich den markanten Brandungspfeiler von Bildern aber wenn er am Ende des Weges in den Blick rückt, ist das sehr beeindruckend 🤩 Der Felsen ist 47 Meter hoch und wiegt 25.000 Tonnen. Schon seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert wurden viele Maßnahmen getroffen, ihn vor Wind und Wetter zu schützen. Doch besonders der Frost setzt dem porösen Gestein immer mehr zu und so bröckelt jedes Jahr etwa eine Tonne der Substanz ab. So ist es leider nur eine Frage der Zeit, wann die Lange Anna, vermutlich an ihrer schwächsten Stelle in 16 Meter Höhe, zusammenbricht. Doch bisher widersteht die Lange Anna der Brandung und kalten Wintern. Of course I knew the sea stack from pictures, but when it comes into view at the end of the path, it is very impressive 🤩 The rock is 47 meters high and weighs 25,000 tons. Since the early 20th century, many measures have been taken to protect it from wind and weather. However, frost in particular is increasingly affecting the porous rock, causing around a ton of the substance to crumble away every year. Unfortunately, it is only a matter of time before the Tall Anna collapses, presumably at its weakest point at a height of 16 meters. But so far, the stack has withstood the surf and cold winters. A different view .. . . The mighty Cliffs of Moher shot from above. Here you can see how the cliffs arise from the ocean, at some places over 200 metres. At the top of the highest point you can see O’Brien’s Tower, a round stone tower near the midpoint of the cliffs that was built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O’Brien. Living 200 metres below the tower and 50 odd metres out to sea is the spectacular 60-metre high sea stack called An Branán Mor. (Branaunmore) The name is very old and has a literal translation as the Big Prince or the Big Raven or Rook, probably named due to its shape when viewed from the sea as it looks like a large chess piece.
