The fragile Sanguinaria Canadensis never ceases to amaze me how it manages to come back year after year. The delicate flowers rise from the centre of its curled leaves opening in full sun and closing at night. Like most members of the poppy family it lasts for only a relatively short time. Did you know the red juice from the underground stem was used by native Americans as a dye for baskets, clothing and war paint as well as an insect repellent. After a couple years of trying to get Bloodroot started in my garden... This is it 🤩 I had no success planting the prepackaged rhizomes, as they never fully rooted and/or got dug up by squirrels. However direct divisions (thanks to a colleague who loves plants just as much as me), seem to be taking to the garden well! "After staring upwards at the stunning Magnolia blooms, let’s take a break and focus our gaze for a minute at the woodland floor. Drifts of delicate, intricate and exotic spring flowers are taking advantage of the spring light available before the trees come into leaf. So many familiar favourites are carpeting Jubilee woods and Bishop Rudd including, Anemone nemerosa (Wood anemones) nestled in clumps at the base of trees and the oddly captivating Trilluims with their 3 petal flowers in whites, dusky reds, and yellows and Erythroniums (dog’s tooth violets), these little sculptural works of art vary in form, and colour, leaf marbling. "When I first came to Aberglasney, I thought I knew a reasonable number of woodland plants, however, I soon went on a journey of discovery, with fellow gardener Wil pointing out to me Sanguinera canadensis f.multiplex plena (Blood root), short lived, but spectacular, the double white flowers resemble small waterlilies. This hardy perennial exudes a red sap which was used as a dye and medicine by native Indians. Then there is the Chinese perennial Mukdenia rossii ‘Karasuba’. This clump forming perennial produces 30cm (12”) white flowers spikes from coral flower buds in March/ April followed by bronze tinted maple shaped leaves. Went to @nativeplanttrust‘s Garden in the Woods for Member Preview Day yesterday, in the company of my friend @theriversdaughter. Spring ephemerals were out in force, including this bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis. While not technically endangered in MA, bloodroot is vulnerable to exploitation, due to over-collection for extremely dubious herbalism practices. #bloodroot #sanguinariacandensis “Bloodroot is a red natural dye used by Native American artists, especially among southeastern rivercane basketmakers. A break in the surface of the plant, especially the roots, reveals a reddish sap which can be used as a dye (perhaps not on the skin tho).” We plant folk just love sighting this spring flower and aren’t likely to use it as medicine.

March 24. Harrison County, IN. Bloodroot. This is one of the largest colonies of Sanguinaria canadensis I've ever come across. While I was taking pictures, a guy comes up, an obvious forager/poacher and asks me what they are. Me: "Bloodroot." Him: "Cool. Do people use that for medicine?" Me, looking at his conspicuously full bag, "Maybe once, but definitely not twice." Him: [looks at me confused] Me: "They're toxic." If you prepare them carefully, apparently they're used medicinally by some people. But it's not my job to sit down and explain that to him. #bloodroot #sanguinariacandensis
