this poem 1st found me (and that other Asch) via Sam *Spark* in the temple in Black Rock City (the night of the Man Burn and the night before the temple itself would remind us of the ephemeral nature of everything in this reality) when he offered recited as one among it in a spontaneous offering of wisdom, confessions, lessons, heartfelt knowings, experience, woundings, loving, encouragement, support, performance, and more that evolved throughout that afternoon and evening. It finds me periodically, including last weekend, and each time, as with all multidimensional art that hums multiple incarnations of a note of one's spirit, a different part of it resonates with a different string in my instrument. I need a distraction, maybe YouTube or my passion, vegetating life away, just to escape from these thoughts I get trapped in. I should study, or find a drink, problem solving simulations, but I struggle not to think. I’ve never been perfect, I’ve made my mistakes. There goes those same old gremlins. Fuck it, maybe just one more take. I could pick up these lettered pens and try to set my sights on good intentions again, but the shadows creep between the cracks and there’s no one left but inner voices for last stand interventions. Depression is like a friend that only loves you when you’re hurting. It tells you it’s all a joke, as it passes the smoke and grins, scratched echoes just cascade as the black circles spin, all the bars start risin’ as the needle sinks in. It’s like walking with cement shoes through the valley of the deepest trench. So many disappear into the triangles we all get lost within. I guess the pen it is. I still feel like shit. Cordon reminded me today of words to a song I wrote a couple of years ago with my friend @jenniferoleksy , @velvetbench Sister Cordon's talk from General Conference April 2023, "Never Give Up an Opportunity to Testify of Christ" is a powerful witness of Jesus Christ and a reminder that as we draw close to Him we will find Him. She says, "We know that in the last days, “every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess” that Jesus is the Christ. I pray this witness will become a normal and natural experience for us now�—that we will take every opportunity to joyfully testify: Jesus Christ lives! Oh, how I love Him. How grateful we are for His infinite Atonement, which has “made eternal life a possibility and immortality a reality for [us] all.” Jesus Christ brings me hope and comfort and peace. And I add my witness in the words of my song: Look around and see the Savior in everything each day. He is there in the small moments in many different ways. I am a Cactus Thriving and growing I can survive in the Sun for hours without water Such an interesting succulent but I’m barely ever thought of Despite being the Devine’s daughter I’m not the one most people would pick first But being a Cactus I won’t die of thirst Unlike the Roses that pass me by in a hearse It seems like a common curse I provide no shade like the trees No sweet nectar for those hungry little bees Yet God thought that I was a necessity A rare breed I have no leaves Just a ton of spine That I use all the time Attractive to those who look beyond the surface Those who value purpose The ones who aren’t afraid To not travel on the road that’s paved The ones who strayed The ones who wonder off to the Desert And did not feel dismayed They can see what I am worth They can see it even in my dirt I am a Cactus Roots deep into the ground Rarely in places where I’m easily found Yet God still needed me isn’t that profound?
