Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are calming down and finding a moment of #zen as we do some #japanesecalligraphy 🖌️ Today, I did not select the poem that I usually do, instead I decided to do a somewhat “easier” script to practice & copy. Rewriting the forms of the characters is both fun & takes an extra amount of concentration. I prefer to think of it as a form of art than a form of writing then I feel less hurried in my own mind and I can pay attention to what I am doing. I don’t know about the rest of you, but sometimes my scruffster brain is so overloaded that I cannot even focus on what I am currently doing. My mind jumps to what I need to do after or even further beyond that. I look forward to these moments of calm & collection with my Human because I know that she needs this reminder & ambiance of tranquility to help her heal. Now, we can switch gears all together and have a Snackie!As usual, after our moment of cultural meditation, we have a #snackiesinparis moment. Paws up to that! As before on other missions, are discovering a new #japanesepastry from Toraya shop in the #1erarrondissement of #paris Today we are tasting the tiny dessert called “Green Hedge” which is compromised of: Thin gyûhi rice dough, filled with white azuki dough flavored with Matcha green tea, sprinkled with lightly toasted rice flour. Did you know that Saint Honoré is the patron saint of the millers, flour merchants, bakers & #pastrychefs ?👨🏻‍🍳 In the 11th century, Picards built a church for him in Paris, today, it no longer exists. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are having a double patrol mission because we had a #plushiemeetup with #snackiesinparis ! Sunfish was here in #paris so of course we had to boop noses, share a Snackie & have great plushie chats! Obviously wanting an authentic #parisianbreakfast we popped down to the Café Central where we were able to sit out on the sunny sidewalk & enjoy some snackies! 🥐 Pre allocated menus or formulas are Beary common when ordering in #france . They are available for most meals at most cafes ou restaurants. May it be for lunch or #dejeuner with a entree/ plat (appetizer/ main dish), plat/ dessert (main dish/ dessert) or all three entree/ plat/ dessert (appetizer/ main dish & dessert). The same options are available for dinner ou #diner as well for the most part. (A la carte is also an option). Although keep in mind, all options on the a la carte menu usually aren’t available when ordering this special deal. Anyway, this was breakfast or #petitdejeuner ! The menu for this meal can be simple& quick usually including #viennoiseries , fresh juice & a warm beverage of choice. Some offers include a baguette with butter & jam as well, here, it did not. This is what Human & I ordered. We treated ourselves to a #chocolatviennois or hot chocolate, #chocolatine & freshly squeezed orange juice. Sunfish opted for an extra Snackie of a cheese omelette! How delicious that looked my friends! Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are exploring #trocadero here in the #16emearrondissement of #paris The Trocadéro Palace was built for the 1877 #expositionuniverselle although its intent was not to remain after the world event, it stayed in place for another 60 years! One of the main reasons it stayed on the Parisian cityscape was that building costs were much higher than intended, costing in the end 12 million gold francs I stead of 7 1/2 million. Ooooops. It was not your traditional palace, it was more of a grand auditorium, events hall with conference rooms and pavilions. The Palais went on to host the Exhibition in 1889 & 1900 the main attractions for these events was on the #champdemars The Parisians did not accept the Palais at first as it was highly criticized for its architecture & the acoustics not being installed properly. Looking at pictures, it was a beautiful building of Moorish and Neo-Byzantine architecture drawing inspiration for the later half of the 19th century. As was mentioned on a previous patrol, the building is no longer in existence today as it was taken apart in 1935 for the 1937 Exposition Universelle. The #palaisdechaillot was then constructed. Mm now for the menu… I think that we start with: 🍹Kompong Thom: a drinkie made with a rum base, ginger & lime 🫚 🍋‍🟩 🍹Battam: tequila infused with coriander, triple sec & lime 🍋‍🟩 #cheersmyfriends Now for the snackies: 🥬 Vegetarian Spring roll with crunched peanuts & dipping sauce! 🥜 🦐Shrimp #bobun sounds really good right about now… I think that is what I will order! I don’t think that I have ever tasted this Snackie before! 🍲 🥮 of course, we are continuing our mission to find the best #flan in Paris! This was made with coconut milk, a lime syrup 🍋‍🟩 & topped with coconut shavings 🥥 an interesting twist on the French classic! #peterpoll of the day💬: have you ever tried Cambodian food?🐻‍❄️ The meal was so fresh & delightfully filling without leaving us overwhelmed and uncomfortable. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are starting off the day by sharing this book here at #parisheadquarters 📚this is “Night of the Grizzlies” by Jack Olsen, have you heard of it? 🐻 Let’s take a trip back in time to August 13th, 1967 at #glaciernationalpark in Montana. 🧸: what happened, Peter pal? 🐻‍❄️: well pals & gals, the events that unfolded were sad for humans & bears alike. Two young women were separately attacked by grizzly bears in Glacier National Park. Both of these young women- 19 years old & neither from the state, Julie Helgeson & Michele Koons, died of their injuries. I won’t go into detail in case you want to read the book for yourself- it’s Beary good with a lot of information of the area & facts about wildlife. I recommend you add this to your #readinglist 📖 Obviously sad for humans but also incredibly heartbreaking for the bear species because they always seem to be held responsible (for humans wandering around in wild bear territory) &killed for it. As the book says “the grizzly needs space, and the continental United States no longer has space to give him. If he is denied running room, and the human animal continues to bump against him in ever-increasing numbers, the grizzly will maim and kill.” And continues with “Montana is one of the last remaining places that have grizzlies, and there’s a strong sentiment to protect the grizzly… Grizzlies must be preserved at all costs…” I may be biased, but I am Team Bear; wild bears (similar to any wild species) need space, must be protected & understood. Every bear likes a Snackie, but wild bears should not have or be exposed to human snackies! When humans leave bits & portions of food it’s bad for bears on many levels. Know I have one for you! Do you know who is Jacques-Germain Soufflot? 🧸: no, not yet, but I have a tickling sensation that you are about to tell us all! 🐻‍❄️: right you are my friend! Soufflot was a Beary famous architect born on July 22, 1713 in Irancy, France. In the 1730s Soufflot attended the French Academy in Rome. The architect, became heavily influenced by his time in Rome, the Neoclassical architecture he came into contact with and studied there. Upon returning to France, Soufflot practiced in Lyon, where he designed the Hôtel-Dieu the building started in 1741 and ended in 1761. But, here in Paris sitting high on a hill in the the #quartierlatin one of his most famous works: #pantheonparis 🏛️ The construction of the Panthéon started in 1757 but because of financial issues, it ending up taking 34 years to complete! This place is next level- over 1,000 varieties on hand may it be wines, liquors, spirits, beers or non alcoholic drinkies… guys I think it’s safe to say there is something for everypawdy here! Let’s shuffle around and grab a table! 🍹I will start with a Fra’gliato- pawfect! Nice bubbly and fruity drinkie! Just what the scruffster bear needs in his life! 🍷and the for Human #cahors 2022. Cahors is a wine from the #southwestfrance almost exactly in between #bordeaux & #toulouse (just slightly closer to Toulouse). The dominant grape variety in the region is #malbec . This was a nice wine, one could tell that it was still rather young yet still beary delicious for a quiet moment like this. Snackies are also available, but later on. Get this! They also host master class sessions and creation classes where one can learn how to make these giggle drinkies for friends at home. Guys! If you’re coming or going from #garesaintlazare in Paris, and have a moment give them a try! This bar could not be any closer to the train station! Let’s find out together! #honoredebalzac born on May 20TH, 1799 in #toursfrance is well known for being a novelist and a playwright. ✍🏼 📚 Regarded as one of the founding fathers of realism in European literature, Balzac has authored many books numerous of which take place in Paris. ✍🏼Many of today’s famous writers, for example: Émile Zola, Charles Dickens, Marcel Proust, Gustave Flaubert, and Henry James were all influenced by his work. 📖 #leperegoriot written in 1835, is one of Human’s favorite books. ⚜️Balzac passed away August 18th, 1850 here in #parisfrance and rests at #perelachaise cemetery. 📚My friend @theadventuresofsimeon told me that today is #worldbookday ! Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are having a double patrol mission at discovering #hoteldesinvalides here in the #7emearrondissement of #paris Have you heard of it? It is an impawtant part of French #patrimoine & #frenchculture so let’s learn a bit about it, shall we? Going back to 1670, no foundation was yet in existence for the invalid soldiers who fought for France & who had insufficient financial resources. King Louis XIV who was sensitive to this issue and made it clear that soldiers who risked their lives on battlefields needed a haven. Thus the construction of the Hôtel des Invalides started between the years of 1671 & 1676. Today some of the space is occupied by the Ministry of Defense, while it still holds true to its primary purpose of hospital hospice for the seriously disabled people due to wounds suffered during war. #peterpoll of the day💬: did you know when this was constructed, this area was considered the countryside of Paris!? That’s why Louis XIV chose its location. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are serving up a double patrol and having some #snackiesinparis that are #homemade here at #parisheadquarters 🤩 I have mentioned on previous patrols that one of Human’s favorite soups is French Onion Soup. As you can see, there are two versions of this #frenchonionsoup Snackie. That’s because Human and I are trying to find and create a recipe that WE like the most. Well, we may need to have two.. because as you can see here the soup has two Beary different colors. That is because one is made with #redwine & one with #whitewine which do you think is which? We had to kind of get creative with how we were going to get the cheese all melty and broiled because we actually don’t have the proper crocks to make the soup the classic way. We improvised, slicing the #baguette Snackie and covering it with cheese and olive oil and popping that into the oven! Then adding the broiled slices on top of the soup. 🥣 How do you think we did? Ich hab gestern noch schnell in Paris angehalten. Dieser Eifelturm ist ganz schön groß! Und vor allem ist er so schief, als ob er jeden Moment umfallen würde 🤣 Dieser Brunnen war noch toll, aber im Moment sind überall in Paris Baustellen. Die bereiten da irgendwas mit Sport vor 😐 Und schaut mal wen ich heute morgen getroffen habe 😍 ich war mit @peterpatrolsparis frühstücken. Nur haben die Menschen alles so schnell aufgefuttert... Peter ist so groooß, knuddeln war ganz schön schwierig! Vielen Dank für das nette Treffen 😙 Ich hab dann noch einen kleinen Stadtrundgang gemacht und diese beiden netten Bären entdeckt. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we had a fabulous #plushiemeetup with our friend @walter_will_nach_kiel at the @theplacetoparis here in the #10emearrondissement of #paris #snackiesinparis patrol guys! Let’s go! We met up super early, so we had a typical French #breakfast together! 🥐 Croissant 🥖 Baguette 🧈 Butter & jam 🍊🧃 orange juice ☕️And a warm beverage! Human and I ordered a hot chocolate with whipped cream 🍫 & dear Walter order a black tea 🫖 Then we got to big plushie chats while the Humans chatted on their own. 🤩 We were all talking so much that we needed to order another round of warm drinkies. A latte coffee for me & a black tea for Walter! Before we parted ways, we had hugs & nose boops and poked about the restaurant a bit! It was hopping! Super duper busy and Beary interesting to see the different sorts of people who were coming in and out. Business people on lunch break, families and friends. Also being that it is just across the street from #garedelest people getting a Snackie before leaving on their train or who have just arrived to Paris! I would recommend this place if you have a train to catch either at Gare de l’Est or #garedunord - the snackies were good (we did look at what the other guests were enjoying) they have a nice & full bar and the vibe was great! Let’s travel back in time. This pathway opened in 1730 on what used to be an old tennis court! It is also home to the oldest café in Paris #leprocope which patrol members dates all the way back to 1686! 😳 (We will HAVE to explore that on a different patrol!) Under the #secondempire Paris had about 150 passages and galeries. Let’s check out @eiffelryukishin 🥣 For drinkie Human and I started off with warm tea. 🫖 grilled green tea- now you may be asking how does one “grill green tea…” well! Rice was a component of the tea and that was grilled! Giving it a wonderful flavor. 🍜 now, Human and I shared their “Ramen Ryukishin vegan” we asked for it spicy, but it really wasn’t too hot! It was really nice and definitely warmed our tummy! 🍨 well, yes, we HAD to try their desserts. They have some really nice ice cream flavors. We got an assortment dish which was comprised of red bean, matcha and black sesame. My pawsonally favorite was the Black Sesame! I am ready in the #patrolportal 🎒 Come #jointhepatrol my friends because we are hitting the #streetsofparis 📍 But before we head out… 🏃🏼‍♀️Today, April 15th, I hold my Human a little tighter because it was on this day in 2013 she pawticipated in her first marathon, The #bostonmarathon . 💙💛 👟 For those of you who don’t remember, that was the Beary sad year for the marathon’s & for Boston’s modern history. A day that is usually filled with glee, cheering, drinkies, excitement and of course baseball, turned so Beary somber and scary. ❤️‍🩹Human still gets sad when she thinks about that day and those that followed closely after, I guess there are some sounds you can never “unhear.” Thank bearness that she didn’t see any of the disaster, as she was just out of view. We love Boston, and always will. Human has so many happy (and Beary wild🤪🤐) memories from our 5 years of living there. Maybe one day we will take the patrol back to this city that will always have a piece of our hearts. Hey guys, Peter here!🐻‍❄️ Today on the #peterpatrol we find ourselves at the #cathedralenotredame here in the #4emearrondissement of #paris There is so much to learn about #notredamedeparis but today we are concentrating about the historical importance of the #fleche Do you see it poking up just behind the tower? A primary spire was built around the year 1250. In the 19th century, Eugene Violet-le-Duc inaugurated a second spire envisioned with a purely decorative design & function. Bellu was commissioned to carry out the work in 1860, the design proving to be much different than the original. Standing 96 meter from the ground, weighing in at a whopping 500 tons of wood & 250 tons of lead! 🔥 During the fire in 2019, it burned and fell before the eyes of many #parisians who bore witness & also who saw it by life report. Today after 5 years of waiting, the spire is complete & in its place with a rooster 🐓 is flying high in the skies of Paris. (The rooster or #coq is a Beary impawtant symbol in #frenchculture , we will learn why on another patrol mission!) To insure safe installation of the spire, 600 tons of scaffolding was put into place! Little by little the scaffolding was removed, and now you can see it! (Notice the difference between the 3rd & 2nd picture?) ⚜️I can’t wait until December of 2024 when Notre Dame is planned once again to be open again to the public! Let’s get a closer look!🤩 🌳This rather intriguing looking tree is made out of metal by #danielhourdé 📖 After some research, it is said that for the artist, this piece represents freedom of expression& life. 📕 The books appear delicate compared to the tree, would he be trying to also show that culture, books and history are fragile?🤔💭 When we looked closer, Human and I realized that they were mostly titles that we heard of and some we have even read! Going on an out of Paris Patrol? 🐻‍❄️: no no my friends! Not today, we will just learn about the #trainstation and this fascinating statue just behind me! 🚂 Saint Lazare was the 1st train station build in Paris! It opened in 1837. Today it is the 3rd busiest station in the city serving destinations such as the western suburbs & #normandy . 🚶🏻‍♂️Daily almost a half a million passengers a day pass through! But guys, did you know that original station was not where it stands today? The first one was about 200 meter northwest of this one. The current building was opened in 1889. Now for the bronze statue! Made in 1985 by French sculptor Arman. The artist is known for his style “nouveau réalisme” and this work called “L’heure de Tous.” The artist is know for accumulating everyday objects which fall victim to the human cycle of mass production, consumption and then destruction. 🕰️ Fun fact! Each of these 22 clocks show a different hour as time affects us all no matter where we are located. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are here on #ruecler in the #7emearrondissement of #paris to look at this building right behind me. I am talking about this one of the corner. Notice guys that it is not as high as its neighboring buildings? Well! #secretsofparis are about to be unfolded! This apartment building was built at the time the #eiffeltower was being constructed. 🧸: Peter, that’s cool, but mmm so what… 🐻‍❄️: ooooh! You put the pressure on my friend! Let me explain further. It was built so that the workers who were working in the tower would have a place to live! Now, you see it’s a little more interesting, no? This building is safeguarded by law protecting #patrimoine One of the stipulations states that any work that is to be done on a building that is proven to be of significant historical or cultural value cannot be modified from the outside facade. This means that all drastic renovations, upgrades of insulation etc must be carried out from the inside of the building. This can sometimes be a big modern day talking point due to the fact that so many of Paris’s apartment buildings are not beary environmentally friendly. This puts apartment owners sometimes in a position of difficulty because every inch of the interior of apartments is vital & insulation takes up space. But we can go into all that mumbo-gumbo on another patrol! It was “The Love Song for Shu-Sin.” This poem was written around 2000 BCE in ancient Mesopotamia. It is considered to be the oldest love poem that exists in text form! But guys, not only that! It also was performed as a song during a sacred marriage ceremony for Shu-Sin, who was a ruler in the city of Ur. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are having double patrol and a quiet evening at #parisheadquarters and remembering back to some beautiful flowers Male picked up for Human and I a number of weeks ago. Human and I were so overwhelmed and happy by their beauty that I of course took a picture with them, but soon patrols picked up again and I forgot to post about their beauty. Tulips season is in April, so it is actually just getting into swing! Tulips are a beautiful flower that symbolize perfect and deep love. Bouquets of #yellowtulips symbolize happiness, cheerfulness and hope. When planted in your front yard they are said to bring good luck and prosperity. In the #victorianera it was believed that yellow tulips literally meant “there’s sunshine in your smile.” For this reason, yellow tulips have become a popular just for fun gift. If you seek forgiveness white tulips are a solid choice as they symbolize commitment and wanting to have a fresh start or new beginning with honor and purity. We feel so grateful that Male thought to bring such natural beauty into headquarters. Come on, come all!🤩 There is a reason that this mission is directly after our previous patrol at the #museeguimet because, this Snackie became popular during the same period as the #taleofgenji was written! 🇯🇵 During the #heian period (794-1185), #mochi Snackies became popular among the elite aristocracy & was served for special occasions & celebrations. By the #edo period (1603-1868) mochi had become a staple food in #japan so much so that different regions began to create & develop their own specialty flavors! The origins of the Snackie date back further however to the #jomon period (14,000-300BCE) this is when cultivation of rice became widespread. Although it was during the #nara period (710-794CE), that it began to resemble more of our modern day delight! 🥮 Flavors depend also on which fruit is in season similar to #frenchpastries Today a modern twist on the Snackie is to make it similar to an ice cream. According to my research, red bean, black sesame and matcha are some of the most traditional flavors. When the Snackie was first introduced to the West, it was called “Japanese Rice Cake.” However over time and with the rise of social media, the word “mochi” has become a vocabulary word understood by all! 🗣️🎙️I put it to you patrol members! Hey guys, Peter here! 🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are having a #snackiesinparis patrol here in the #4emearrondissement of #paris at @carette_paris 🍴 There are multiple locations for this restaurant in Paris, but today we find ourselves at the one in #placedesvosges On this episode of the patrol mission, we are having a #flan because we you all remember, we are on an ongoing hunt for the best flan Snackie in Paris. 🍮 This flan Snackie was tasty. A nice and delicate burned layer, and a weightless texture in your mouth. Human liked the crust on the bottom as well. Being that the patrol is on such a beautiful day, human opted for a glass of #petitchablis to accompany it!🍷 mmmmm! 🫠🤤 But what truly makes this place a #peterspick is the location. Let me tell you why! This is one of Human’s favorite cafes to sit outside because of where it is situated, the exposure of the sun & how it bathes the outdoor seating throughout the afternoon is heavenly! ☀️ There are of course many cafes & restaurants surrounding the Place des Vosges but the direction of the sun is not the same. This Carette location is not their first one established in Paris dating back to 1927, nor is flan what they are best known. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we find ourselves in #placedesvosges in the #4emearrondissement of #paris 🇫🇷 As we learned on a previous patrol, this is the oldest square in Paris dating back to when Henry IV built it from 1605-1612. Behind me, we have a statue of Louis XIII. This is a marble statue that was created in 1821 by Jean-Pierre Cortot. At the time, when the statue was installed in 1825 the square was called “Place Royale.” ⚜️Although this was not the original statue. The original was made of bronze and was melted down for the fabrication of canons during the #frenchrevolution . 👑In 1560 #catherinedemedici wished for a statue of King Henri II to be placed here. The Queen asked Michelangelo to sculpt it however he declined to the offer due to his age at the time. 🐎 The horse was completed in 1567, yet not the rider. In 1634 Cardinal Richelieu commissioned a bronze statue to be placed at the center of Place Royale. At this time, the square was a popular place for duels. The Cardinal thought that with an installation of a statue, it would prevent duels to occur as frequently. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are sharing another book that Human & I have (yet to read) here at #parisheadquarters 📖 🤔💭Who was the real Gabrielle Chasnel? Pals & gals you may know her as the one & only Coco Chanel! Chanel was born on August 19th 1883. Little is known about her childhood as she spoke seldomly of it. However, what is known is that it was an unhappy one. Despite having 5 other siblings (it was her duty to look after) she was lonely, never feeling truly loved by her father. Her mother died February 6, 1895; that same year, her father sent she & her two sister to live in an orphanage. It was here where she learned to sew 🪡 Having little to no money to pay for advanced schooling she attended with the equivalent of scholarships which caused her to be treated poorly by her classmates. It wasn’t until 1907/1908 that she became “Coco.” Chanel learned the codes of upper society & began to shake things up. Like Paul Poiret who in 1906 thought to get rid of the famous corset, Chanel’s designs followed suit; she wanted to free women’s bodies.🧵 🛍️ In 1910 her first boutique opened here in #paris on 12 rue Cambon named: Chanel Mode. A second in Deauville in 1913 and a third in Biarritz in 1915. 👗 1926 was the year Chanel created the famous #littleblackdress . Prior to this time, the color black was reserved strictly for funerals. Coco Chanel was also the first clothing designer to launch her Beary own perfume! Of course “Chanel No 5.” Her marketing plan was completely by word of mouth. Another concept monumental at the time. Her perfume would be sprayed discreetly at the moment it was being talked about, creating a huge buzz &desire to obtain it! 🎀Chanel wore pearls all the time & that became one of her statements she was most known for. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are taking a look at some new #japanesecalligraphy that Human and I recently did! ✍🏼 the poem was broken down into 6 different stanzas. Do you see the red border on the page? 🖌️ the first part of the poem is translated roughly to this: “even if the great universe Was on fire, the one who crosses it To hear the name of the Buddha Will definitely achieve the irreversible” As we remember, the patrol has done a couple missions similar to this, but only today did we realize that we have been writing out the same poem! Human and I recognized many of the characters that we have been practicing but only now did we learn that it’s actually been the same piece all along!🤭 Well, at least we are learning what the symbols look like, we can’t yet figure out which means what word in English or French, but that will come because there is a paper with the Japanese writing and the French translation! 📃 Hear that human? We have some studying to do!🤓 🇯🇵🥮 once again, we all tasted a special Snackie from the Toraya shop in the #1erarrondissement of #paris This is a Beary impawtant cake Snackie this time of year. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are taking a look at another book we have here at the #parisheadquarters library!📖 In case the bottle doesn’t give it away, it’s a biography about the “Grand Dame of Champagne”🥂 Let’s learn about Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin. This lady was born in 1777 in Reims which is in the #champagneregion of France. The beginning of her story is Beary sad because she was widowed at the age of 27. But, this didn’t stop her from becoming one of the first modern day entrepreneurs! Remember guys, at this time in history women were for the most part banned from business. Madame Clicquot seized the opportunity and took control of her late husband’s family’s company. The champagne house was founded by her late husband’s father in 1772. 🥂 She brought many new ideas to the wine world- for example: vintage champagne, the riddling table and the Beary first #rosechampagne ! 🍾 ⚜️All three of these elements were significant and paramount additions! Today they are an industry standard and norm. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are having a little snackie here at @cordeliacoffeeflowershop in the #7emearrondissement in #paris 🚨that’s right pals & gals! A patrol for #snackiesinparis is underway! 🤩 This place has such a Beary cool concept! Human, Male & I HAD to check it out- a cute little #coffeeshop in the front & a lovely #florist in the back! 🌸 First things first, snackies. Of course. Let’s decide what we shall have… mmmmm.. ah well, it’s a simple choice for me because they have #flan ! 🍮 Wooohoooo! Our mission to find the best flan in Paris continues!🤩 The flan was Beary delicately flavored. The consistency of the snackie was firm, but not hard, which is something that I prefer in a flan. Taste profile: Lightly vanilla and milky on the palate. Overall: I would say that it was a nice snackie. Then Human and I decided to share a #cafelatte with #oatmilk ☕️ human does enjoy oat milk with her lattes. She says that it gives it a nicely balanced and deep flavor. Plus, it has a strong composition, as compared to other milk substitutes, that it can allow for fun #latteart designs! Male had a chocolate cake with a chocolate matcha latte! The cake was dense and rich, at least with the small sliver of a taste that was allotted to this scruffster bear. (MAAAALE?!) But the chocolate matcha latte, was something different and fun! Not a sweet chocolate like a thought it my head, not overpowering in balance for the drink. Now that we have snacked, let’s check out the #flowershop come in guys! As you can see, I did have quite a bit of fun playing hide& seek in the flowers! Don’t worry Human, I know where you are! Eleanor was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. From 1933-1945 she was the longest serving First Lady of the United States. 🇺🇸 Although she was born into a prominent & affluent family, niece to the President #theodoreroosevelt Sadly, she had a somewhat unhappy youth. As a child she had the unfortunate reality of losing not only both her parents but also one of her brothers at a young age. After a year of secret correspondence & romance, she got engaged to her father’s fifth cousin #franklindelanoroosevelt on November 22, 1903. Officially, the engagement was announced a year later. Theodore Roosevelt gave the bride Eleanor away at the wedding on March 17th, 1905 Eleanor Roosevelt was highly admired and seen as a powerful woman. She did not hesitate to speak her mind as First Lady. Eleanor was Beary outspoken for subjects that were of particular interest to her. She was also the first presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences, write a daily column for a newspaper, monthly magazine column, host a weekly radio show. There were even some few occasions she disagreed publicly with her husband’s policies. Even after President Roosevelt’s death she remained an active member and participant in politics. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we find ourselves once again at #hoteldevilleparis in the 4th arrondissement! But today, it’s for another patrol mission subject! Look behind me, see the decorations? It’s for the #parisolympics2024 Have you heard patrol members that this summer Paris is hosting the #olympicgames ?!🤩 It is going to be epic! I have never been in a city that is scheduled to host this event, watching & living through the preparations have been interesting! The #cityofparis has been going crazy with the necessary groundwork for, well, the arrival of the entire world!🗺️ 🏗️ Construction for stadiums has begun, cleaning and maintenance of the facilities, buildings & monuments is underway. Some hotels are scrambling to open, others are filling their rooms, while some of the establishments already are fully booked for the events! Airbnbs as well are being reserved at astronomical prices. Huge numbers of Parisian are renting out their flats and heading for other cities to avoid the huge influx of tourists that will be invading the #streetsofparis . 🖥️ Just because I am a curious scruffster bear, I looked at airplane ticket prices between the United States and Paris, let’s say that they are at least 2 or 3 x the normal rate!📈 🤯That’s bananas! 🚧 Roads and streets are also being redone and in some cases altered! Meaning that they are turning into one way, bike paths, pedestrian only zones, roundabouts being formed oh the list goes on! 🅿️ New rules are being put into place about personal vehicles and street parking access. Although normally the name has religious significance, in Greek “Petros” actually translates to rock or stone. 🪨 Meaning inner strength & an unwavering constitution. (Mmmm… pawhaps unless a snackie is around… then we Peters tend to crumble). 🤭 The name was actually brought to England by the Normans during the various invasions, but in the form of “Piers.” As history records, it wasn’t until the 15th century that the name evolved into Peter. As far as my name is concerned, I wasn’t named for religious significance. When Human was a tiny kiddie she could not decide on my name, nothing fit and for years I didn’t have one!🙄 Then one day her family rented the VHS 📼 Heidi. In the film there is a little shepherd boy named Peter. 🐑 Not long after the film rolled to an end, she looked at me, I looked at her and from that moment on I was “Peter.” ☺️ I think that means the Humans should give me lots of special snackies today! The games opened on July 5, 1924 and closed on July 27th. 44 nations competed, 2,954 men & 135 women. The program was made up of 17 sports & 126 events. That year, the 🇺🇸USA won 99 metals (🥇45 🥈27 🥉27) 🇫🇮Finland won 37 metals (🥇14, 🥈13 🥉10) 🇫🇷France won 38 metals (🥇13🥈15🥉10) The 1924 games was actually the second time Paris hosted the games, the first being in 1900. Let’s go to the 1st arrondissement here in #paris 🐾 Come on guys! Let’s learn about this historic establishment & have a #snackiesinparis mission!🍴 The #ritzparis is considered to be one of the most beautiful & luxurious 5* hotels in the world. It was founded in 1898 by the Swiss hotelier Cesar Ritz with the chef Auguste Escoffier. The glowing reputation of the hotel grew rapidly. The space it occupies was actually created from combining two hotel particuliers, l’hôtel de Gramot constructed in 1705 and l’hôtel Crozat in 1703. Cesar Ritz bought these two properties in 1897 and with the help of architect Charles Mewès, the luxurious hotel was built. The Ritz opened its doors on June 1st, 1898 with great celebration. Throughout the history of the hotel, many Beary famous people stayed or took up residence at the hotel. These include: Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau & of course Coco Chanel. Let’s learn about it! It started right here at the Hotel de Ville. Well, it wasn’t yet Hotel de Ville at that time. Journeying back to yesteryear here in Paris we discover this square used to be called “place de la grève.” This square located on the Seine River was one of the primary loading places for boats &barges in the Middle Ages, and it was a “grève.” A grève is a beach of sand or stone near to a body of water such as a river or the sea. If men were in search of employment, they could readily find it loading & unloading these boats. Of course, workers were constantly unsatisfied with their wages, conditions of work or service and tended to gather & air their grievances here. Thus leading to exchanging ideas of how to accomplish what they wished and volia Les amis, we have our birth to the “grève” or strikes. BUT! The trail strikes would follow did not start here, but somewhere else in Paris, and once again, for a beary strategic reason! Of course, I am talking about the famous #bouquinistesdeparis 📕📖 See these wooden kiosks that pop up? They have been apart of the Paris landscape since around the 16th century! However, in 1649, it was forbidden for these secondhand peddlers to display their books on the #pontneuf During the #frenchrevolution there was a sharp decline in published books and novels as only the revolutionary newspapers & pamphlets were printed. 🗞️ Secondhand booksellers of the time however took a bit of advantage of the situations arising with the revolution- in pawticular the pillaging of libraries of the aristocracy & of the clergy. 🫣📚📜 Under Napoleon I, the selling points along the banks of the Seine were elaborated on especially between Quai Voltaire & Pont Saint Michel. In 1859, the #cityofparis and the #bouquinistes established fixed points. Each was allowed 10 meters of parapet for an annual fee of 26.35 francs and 25 francs for a license to sell. Hours of operation were from sunrise to sunset. It was not until the 1930s that these boxes like we see today became fixed in place. Guys! Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we find ourselves at @shakespeareandcoparis here in the 5th arrondissement of #paris #shakespeareandcompany is a bookshop not to miss if you’re staying in Paris. Yes, it has a large percentage of books in English, and yes it’s touristic, but nonetheless I find it absolutely intoxicating to be here. You feel like you’re in another world, you feel inspired, you dream, you feel motivated to learn & read more. There are people tucked away in corners reading, some are milling around, some are just strolling through quickly to get to the next stop on their journey. I had to supervise Human as she went through the various rooms of this #bookstore 📚 I am sure many of you can relate, when Humans are in a bookshop they end up leaving with a huge stack of books! #parisheadquarters is quaint, as most apartment in Paris are, so we must be selective about what we bring in! But on the other paw, I must say that I am beary proud of her, she only came out with one book that she didn’t preorder.📕 🤔💭Okay Human, what is the deal here? Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are exploring the river banks of the Seine! Each year the water level of the river goes up, up, up around this time. It is considered normal for the river to rise around 3.20 meters, and that is roughly what we have experienced so far. Even so, the water has lapped up against and toppled over a bit of the pedestrian areas of the quays. You can see in some of the patrol photos how close and how much the water has risen. As we shuffle closer to the #eiffeltower , there are only a few inches between water and sidewalk. When boats go by, sometimes their wake catches and splashes up on the banks! Water reservoirs have been built to prevent flooding in the Paris region. Together, we decided to bake her some cookies! 👨🏻‍🍳 And here are the final products pals and gals! We added peanuts and chocolate chunks on top as extra yummy garnish. After all toppings are what make the dessert snackie pawfect!! Did you know that George Washington Carver published some of the first known recipes for peanut cookies in 1910, calling for crushed or chopped peanuts. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are serving up some #comfortfood hot and fresh! 👨🏻‍🍳 That’s right pals and gals, we are having homemade #frenchonionsoup snackies here at #parisheadquarters 🤩 It was a process to make the soup snackie because it started with the cooking down of many, MANY onions of all different kinds! 🧅 🔪 As I am sure most of us plushie chefs out there know, soup is better when it has time to marinate. This allows the flavors to develop and become deeper. So this soup needed a two day rest. 🥣 A Beary impawtant part of the soup is of course the bread that covers the liquid! For that, we needed to make sure that we had day old bread that was already cut. The bread needed to go into the oven when the soup was almost ready. This gives it extra crunch and allows the bread to not soak up all the soup immediately. 🥖 Then we serve the soup into oven safe bowls, layer the bread and of course add a Beary heavy pawed helping of cheese on top. After this, it’s straight into the oven to be broiled. That’s how it gets that wonderful burned and crispy top layer! 🧀 Tuck in guys! #snackiesinparis is starting! Hey guys, Peter here! 🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we find ourselves once again exploring another painting at the @museelouvre here in the 1st arrondissement of #paris 🖼️ 🖌️This oil on canvas painting, #lagrandeodalisque by Jean August Dominque Ingres was painted in 1814. It was commissioned by Napoleon Bonapate’s sister, Queen Caroline Murat of Naples. 🎨This masterpiece received heavy criticism when it was originally shown for its elongated proportions and lack of anatomical realism. Looking at this painting for yourself, do you notice the odd proportions? For example, her back, doesn’t it appear to be rather long? Her arm as well that is holding the fan? Then on the other paw, the perception of her left leg being shorter? 👨🏻‍🎨At the time, it was believed that these distortions were done by error. However recent studies prove that they were actually deliberate! Pawsonally, I find this painting to be very calming in the color palette and the overall attitude of the woman posing. She doesn’t appear to be offended or shocked that someone is watching her. Hey guys, Peter here! 🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are snuggling in here at #parisheadquarters and looking at our bookshelf.📚 This is a book that Human and I always wanted to take a moment to sit down and read. 📖 The basic storyline is about an extramarital affair between Anna and the handsome cavalry officer Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky that causes a scandal in the social circles of Saint Petersburg. This forces the young lovers to flee to Italy in a search for happiness, later they return to Russia, where their lives have further development and craze. Human and I enjoy Russian Literature a lot! We have read #doctorzhivago & #crimeandpunishment Doctor Zhivago was Beary complex and we needed to check the name index often because the same character sometimes had 4 different names/ nicknames or spells depending on who was talking to him. Despite that, we give it a paws up!🤩 Crime and Punishment is one of Human’s favorite books. We could barely put it down! It was much easier for us to keep the characters straight. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we find ourselves once again practicing some #japanesecalligraphy paw-writing! 🇯🇵 🖌️ we found this poem to be Beary interesting because the presenter informed us that it has both #chinesecharacters & #japanesecharacters 📜 although I am not a pawfessional at this yet, I have learned that the writing goes from right to left and from the top of the page down. The paper is also Beary impawtant to this writing. It is a Beary thin rice paper which is something that human and I are not used to writing on. Because the paper is so lightweight and thin they have these rectangular sort of paperweights to keep it from slipping. I can’t wait to learn more!🤩 👩🏼‍🌾now guys, let’s take a closer look at this pawesome snackie once again from #toraya here in the first arrondissement of Paris! This is a #mochi snackie called the “Rice Field Hat.” I can’t wait to share with you all what I learned! During the rice transplanting season, farmers wear straw hats, the shape of which is shown in the snackie! (The Rice Hats aren’t jade green like this snackie). 🥮 now let’s talk about what the snackie tastes like! Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are here at the @museelouvre in the 1st arrondissement of #paris !🤩 There is so much to learn about and see that we decided to start with this painting. 🖼️ This is an oil on canvas painting by #eugenedelacroix “The Death of Sardanapalus” dated 1827. 🐻‍❄️: Have you heard of it patrol members? 🧸: not yet Peter pal! We are all ears! 🎨 This painting is based on the tale of Sardanaplaus, or the King of Assyria. 🖌️Delacroix’s brushwork truly brings harsh and brisk movement in the scene of the piece. As we can all see it is all Beary lively & chaotic. 👨🏻‍🎨 Presented at the Paris Salon in 1828, it received opinions that were polarized. The main subject Sardanapalus was a king willing to destroy all of his possessions may that be human or of luxury. Not the classic hero as is usually portrayed so there was a different sense of morals. Death is everywhere and in this painting we feel like it can’t be escaped. It seems to bring to light that there is going to be an abrupt shift after this scene is finished. Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are exploring the hidden interior of another apartment building here in the 6th arrondissement of #paris 🤩 Remember when we last patrolled together a building interior? Well Human and I had another impawtant meeting to attend which we were pleased to find had beautiful art nouveau style glass carvings & different stained glass windows going up the staircase. It was difficult to get a good picture of the windows in the stairwell because Human has mobility issues. But the few that we could more easily see were different from one another & the one we could get a decent photograph of was of a sail boat! ⛵️ Sorry for the quality, it was a tough one to capture! Hey guys, Peter here!🐾 Today on the #peterpatrol we are going to a #fishmonger here in the 7th arrondissement of #paris Situated on #ruecler this shop specializes in the selling of raw fish and seafood🎣 Let’s take a look inside! All of these beautiful fish displayed beneath a lovely stained glass window of the sea 🌊 🐠 🐟 The shopkeepers are quite knowledgeable about from where the fish come. Human & I knew what type of fish snackie we were looking for so the man gave us a couple of options with that information. He asked further questions: for how many people you are cooking & would we like them to fillet the fish or if we would do it. We chose to let them prepare the pieces for us as we do not know the proper technique. Did you know that the Fishmongers guild was actually one of the earliest guilds established in London by a Royal Charter granted by Edward I not long after he became king in 1272? In #france fishwife became a slang expression for someone (historically the fishermen’s wife) who shouts unpleasantly & behaves in a Beary ill-tempered manner. In #medievalfrance the workers (fishwife&fishmongers) of the market were pawticularly known for their sharp & critical tongues. They were even given special privileges to speak as frankly as they pleased even to the King himself without risk of punishment. 😳 Today, in many countries it is an unfortunate reality that quaint shops like these are becoming fewer in number because of supermarkets. Let’s check out the exhibit together.🤩 This was the period in French history between the years of 1715 and 1723 when King Louis XV was still considered a minor. 👦🏻 🤴🏻When King Louis XIV passed away, his successor was only 5 years old. Various diseases of the time sped the succession to the late king’s great-grandson. Due to his Beary young age, the country was governed by Philippe d’Orléans (a nephew of Louis XIV of France) as prince regent. Hence, it was known as the “regency period.” Maturity in those days was defined as 13 years of age! 😳 👑 King Louis XV, of the House of Bourbon, reigned for almost 59 years (1715-1774), that would be the second longest in French history. As the presenter has told us at the start of each session, this is not the environment to learn and perfect your calligraphy technique. Here, is a place to try something new and enjoy the moment; a completely different outlook and perspective on an activity. And let me tell you it is refreshing! Come on guys! Let’s try our paw at this! 🖌️ There is a typical #japanesedessert snackie as well! #snackiesinparis is on the mission!🤩 This sort of traditional dessert can be found in the Toraya boutique in the 1st arrondissement. The snackie we will be tasting today is called “Halte à Shinagawa.” As the description of the dessert was explained, Sinagawa was once the first of 54 stopover towns along the Tokaido Route connecting Edo (present day #tokyo ) to the Imperial Capital of #kyoto Needless to say, for me pawsonally, it was such a huge success of a patrol because I learned so much about #japaneseculture on so many levels that I did not previously know!😃 Now for the snackie! This snackie is made of traditional #mochi rice paste filled with a purée of red azuki paste & chopped walnuts! Let’s learn about hats pals & gals! Hats and head coverings could date back as far as 30,000 years ago! 😳 Of many things, hats have been can convey social status or military rank. For example, Napoleon’s bicorne hat was claimed by a Prussian major after losing the Battle of Waterloo. After further reading, I learned something pawesome for the patrol! One of his bicorne black beaver felt hats was recently sold at an auction in Paris in 2023 & commanded a final bidding price of 1.9 m euros! Originally it was valued between 600,000€ and 800,000€. Although that’s obviously a lot of snackie money, I would have thought the primary value would have been much higher. 🎩 Top hats became popular just before the 19th century started. These hats were often made from luxurious materials such as silk or wool, thus conveying social status of the wearer. These hats were usually worn by men until Marlene Dietrich came on the cabaret scene. The German actress made the combination of a top hat & tailcoat part of her stage ensemble. In Paris, as I am sure in other cities as well, there are still milliner shops!
