Around the world, about 18% of pregnant women carry Group B Strep in their bodies. So what is Group B strep? Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a type of bacteria that naturally lives in the large intestine and can migrate down to the rectum, vagina, and urinary tract. It usually does NOT cause illness. During most of your life, having GBS in your system is considered normal. It can cause illness if your immune system is compromised. Read through the swipe post for more! The tests for GBS are cultured over 1-2 days, so unfortunately a rapid test is not an option. You can ask for repeat testing but this can be difficult. It is legal for you to opt out of screening + testing for GBS, obviously discuss this with your birth care team. Let’s love our bodies. I know it’s hard to do when we don’t feel it. Before I started helping women, I, too, was very hard on myself, and to top it off I I could barely hold my pee. Yup, I had issues too! I was in my 40s with four kids, thinking that my body was failing me and thinking. This is life now after kids. Now in my 60s, I have learned the importance of strength training and retraining my pelvic health so that I don’t have accidental leaks. I am no longer rushing to the washroom and fearing that I make it. Do you know our muscles at 60 are the same ones we had at 40? Hey, aging happens. But you are in control of how it happens. When re-training your pelvic floor, we use all of the same muscles. Learn to strengthen those muscles for overall health; you will love yourself for it. Oh, and it’s never too late to re-train those muscles. Care down there isn’t as complicated as you might think—it’s more like a self-cleaning oven. Less is more down there and over doing it can disrupt the normal vaginal microbiome and cause irritation or infection. Here’s an update! So literally on the last may bank holiday weekend (3 weeks ago) I admitted to not completing my women health coaching course (or well admitted to not even starting it)😂. I am happy to announce! 3 weeks on I have now completed unit 1 -coaching and psychology and unit 2 nutrition! All online tests have also been completed and passed 🙌. I will be doing some reflections on both of these units tomorrow to help consolidate my learning and I will post up my key take aways from both! Then it’s on to the 3rd and pretty much final unit of exercise and recovery! I get it! There's something so freeing and refreshing about peeing when you are swimming... It's kinda gross having to sit on public toilets with a wet butt... What does it mean to have Pelvic Pain…? Let’s dive into what #pelvicpain really means, Why we experience this pain and How it can be treated . ☝️ Pelvic pain means pain that is felt somewhere in the pelvis. This could include the following: •It could be bladder pain •pain from the uterus •pain from the rectum •pain from the pelvic floor or lower abdominal muscles •sacral pain •tailbone pain 🗺️ There can be many sources of pelvic pain. •Pelvic pain may occur because the pelvic floor muscles are too tight or are not functioning in a healthy way. •It can be because the nerve has been irritated or injured. •Sometimes it can actually come from the back or hips being injured. ➡️Pelvic pain treatment is dependent on the source of the pain. Pain can be treated in various ways. ••••••••••••••••••••••••• What does treatment look with our Pelvic Floor PTs? 🌟At Insight we will do a full body assessment to determine what could be causing the pain. Based on our findings we might want to get a team of providers on board to help decrease the pain with medication or other modalities. We will likely work on the muscles and the nerves to help them relax to not feel as much pain. We might recommend using machines like the TENS machine (watch for our follow up post for these details) to help decrease pain. If you are like me and have worked for years , but not really breathing correctly, you are doing a disservice to your pelvic floor Y’all seriously if you have t checked out her app … do so now . I have learned so much about the way to breath during workouts that will help pelvic floor 💪🏼 Also her workouts are great for any woman especially pregnant , postpartum ( psssstttt even if you had kiddos 30+ years ago) , pelvic floor , DR , … like I said pretty much for any woman 💪🏼 BTW, I learned I am notorious for holding my breath … like she says breath out loudly and it doesn’t matter who is watching ( or something to that effect 🤪) Also, I am learning from @the.pelvicphysio to really use my glutes and don’t let them be lazy. PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLE BASICS 💫 ⁣ ⁣ 👉🏼 Squeeze and lift⁣ 👉🏼 Relax and lower⁣ ⁣ I’m sure you’ve heard about ‘kegel’s’ or squeezing your pelvic floor muscles to keep them strong. BUT, relaxation is just as important as the squeeze itself! 🧘‍♀️⁣ ⁣ Yes, women can have weak pelvic floor muscles which may result in reduced squeeze pressure and urinary/faecal incontinence. But, women can also have tight pelvic floor muscles and struggle to relax these muscles. This can also cause urinary incontinence and other issues such as increased urination, problems passing a bowel motion, pain and more. 💥⁣ ⁣ Improving the connection to your pelvic floor muscles is important as these muscles control our pee, poo and pleasure. It can also really help during labour and optimise outcomes as well as assist in postpartum reconditioning. 🤗⁣ ⁣ Since we can’t see our pelvic floor muscles, it can be hard to know if you are performing a complete and proper pelvic floor muscle contraction and relaxation, but this is where pelvic health physios can help identify issues, assess your muscle function and help you master the skill of a pelvic floor muscle squeeze, lift and relaxation to optimise your long term pelvic health. 🙈⁣ ⁣ Pelvic health matters! Even if you are being proactive. as prevention is always better than treating an issue when it arises. In any room of mothers socialising, you can expect open conversations and solidarity around the topic of sleep or sleep deprivation. But did you know pelvic organ prolapse is almost as common? Around 50% of women experience some form of pelvic organ prolapse after childbirth, yet it’s rarely discussed. As a result, many women don’t know how to identify the symptoms or get the support that they need. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m sharing this post because I have pelvic organ prolapse. Statistically, lots of you will have this too, and yet it’s something I’ve been hesitant to open up about. I’m still at the very early stages of understanding this condition and learning how to reduce/eliminate my symptoms, however, what I do know is that my life isn’t over just because I have this condition. Supported by the amazing @jennyfielding.physio - women’s health advocate and pelvic physio practitioner, I now have some understanding of my prolapse and feel empowered to work towards living a very normal life. To quash the taboo surrounding the subject, I’m going to be taking openly about my pelvic organ prolapse moving forward. Women with pelvic organ prolapse CAN and SHOULD lift weights. I said it, and evidence supports it. Many women with prolapse are fearful of lifting weights. “My organs are going to fall out”. “Lifting is going to make my symptoms worse”. But lifting weights and resistance training are essential parts of the rehabilitation process! Because what happens if they need to lift their 30 pound toddler but are restricted to lifting 3# weights? What happens if they sneeze (the equivalent of lifting 35#)? Their bodies unfortunately have minimal reliance when it comes to these normal, daily, life tasks.

Lifting weights is about full body strength, not just your pelvic floor. Rehab needs to be bringing women close to their threshold of symptoms, carefully and intelligently of course. That threshold is where adaptation starts. Resistance should be relatively healthy to the person lifting. In a very interesting study, women who were lifting lighter weights actually reported MORE prolapse symptoms than those lifting heavier weights. Were the women with prolapse symptoms lifting lighter weights because of these symptoms? Maybe! But this study in general, supports that women should be finding their symptom threshold as a part of their rehab. Lifting weights also helps prepare your pelvic floor for matching the pressure that your body is placing on it. Training different bracing and breathing patterns is SO helpful for those with POP. Again, most women don’t want to be less fit, so why not include strength and conditioning as part of their rehab plan? As well as other lifestyle and prolapse symptom management factors.
