I have $35K+ in student loan debt to be able to tell you that the set of mutations seen in the JN.1 are the beginning of the worst case scenario - increased hospitalizations, and death. Not to mention the odds of getting Long Covid increase exponentially with each infection. By allowing this virus to continue to circulate, relatively unchecked due to poor public health policies and practices, we have allowed it to mutate to a more sinister form. The latest vaccine should provide you with some amount of protection, as it primes your immune system to be prepared to respond upon ‘seeing’ an infection by this virus. Wearing high quality masks and increasing ventilation inside are good practices to help limit spread and infection. We are about to enter a period of time where it may finally begin to be hard to ignore the level of tragedy and suffering that could have been avoided if this pandemic had been taken more seriously, sooner. There was a HICPAC meeting today. HICPAC stands for Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee and they hold their meetings eight times a year. Earlier today, a meeting was held where they went over an agenda they had for controlling infection in healthcare spaces. There was little-to-nothing good that was mentioned especially towards enforcing preventative measures for C19. This meeting was public, so anyone could sign up for the teleconference and could sign up to make a public comment. However, they did not let everyone speak and the live video that was uploaded on YouTube where one can hear the people that did get to speak, was deleted. This is a public comment that I was going to make, but was not able to during the meeting. We must continue to let our voices and stories be heard. Reminder: the pandemic isn’t over. I was having a conversation with my physical therapist the other day. We talk a lot about covid safety and I’ve been confused why she wears a surgical mask at work. She let me know that she is only allowed to wear what the hospital provides so she can ONLY wear a surgical mask. She isn’t allowed to wear an N95 under the mask they provide. She is worried that soon, the hospital will stop providing surgical masks as well. She hasn’t gotten covid yet, that she knows of. She cares for her elderly parent who could die if he got covid again (he first got it while getting care at a hospital). I’m worried for her because she is so committed to her job and she is amazing at it. I’m so grateful to be her patient and I want her to be safe. Hospitals…. HOSPITALS are forcing their staff to risk their health and their patients health in order to… care for their patients? What is this world? I don’t like April. April 2018 is when everything started falling apart and I’ve not been able to pick myself back up again since. Grief on top of grief, with no time to process what’s been happening. I know so many of us have had very similar experiences as I remember reading your painful posts from that year as clearly as my own. We’ve not had a chance to rest. Hoping this old FB note from my friend Tony, who we lost that April 2018, will help us all remember how far we have come ❤️ There have been so many times in the last few years that I’ve wished I could talk to Tony. But also there’s a part of me that’s glad he avoided all this awfulness you know? He had COPD and was, it turned out, surrounded by anti mask and anti vax folks. The other day was a low point. Before I became chronically ill I was a people pleaser. I still have the tendency to sometimes mute myself to make others comfortable. I ended having a morning crying to my husband about how I felt like the world has kicked me and others out. I will never understand why people make the decision to not mask, but I understand it’s a reality. Any of us in this community knows how I feel. I’m not going to fact up this post because I’m tired. What I want to say is I still wear a mask in public. So does my husband. We wear N95s. We have people test and wear masks in our home. We have the same air cleaner running that’s in this OT waiting room. During good weather we have outdoor visits, but they can wear a mask if they need to use the bathroom. We have masks available for everyone. The pandemic is not over, and you’re not alone if you still mask up. I love you and I value you. 3 years ago, we sat in fear. The world was locking down, there was so much uncertainty, and we knew the world was never going to be the same. In a time where we should have been able to unite, we could not. Disabled people were immediately thought of as less than. All we heard was eugenics based rhetoric where "only the sick and old die", or that we should, "Stay indoors while return to our normal lives" by able-bodied folk who saw us as subhuman. We were mocked for taking precautions, pressured into going out, and sadly, some of us passed away. Many disabled people STILL have to quarentine. Many disabled people HAVE gotten a second condition or their first condition worsened by COVID. Many disabled people HAVE experienced long COVID. Many formaily able-bodied people are NOW disabled due to getting COVID. Even after vaccines, we are still in a pandemic. It's not over because a majority think it is over, or that a majority doesn't have horrible symptoms, or that we do not have daily reports of infections. People keep telling me ‘you’ll feel so much better if you go outside’ Without realising that there’s nothing I want to do more than go outside. I know my own body and will do it when it’s ready, and relatively irrelevant things like ‘going outside’ and ‘getting dressed’ are not magical undiscovered cures for symptoms of ME and Long Covid 🙄. Well today I felt well enough to go outside. Just briefly in the wind with a hot chocolate and my stick. I am incredibly grateful to be improving relatively quickly for ME standards (not for anyone else) after such an awful Covid infection. Things were so bad I started bargaining with myself continuously, ‘if I can just be well enough to be able to consistently talk to my partner and send messages from my phone then I can survive’. But I’ve already got so much more than that, and for every severe symptom that’s lifted I am eternally grateful to my lucky stars (other stuff too including the privilege of rest, but mostly luck). But gradually becoming more aware again of the external world isn’t quite the amazingly positive mental health kick you’d imagine. Firstly there’s the fact that C*vid is still raging and everyone has made it pretty clear by now they do not care if the vulnerable are either locked up forever, or die. That they’d rather ignore the existence of Long C*vid until it affects them. My friends are still sick, very sick in some cases, with no sign of a cure yet, or better recognition and prevention. I am still sick and for some reason re-accepting my very likely lifelong illness has felt like getting my ME diagnosis all over again. I feel a little lost with it. To be clear, I am a very positive person so for anyone who thinks I’m being overly negative, well, you’re wrong 🤷♀️. I have so much hope. I just have to figure out what my place is again, how to really take care of myself and my community, and what’s actually important. Testing Is Important. I was feeling sick so I tested 2 days in a row. Day 1 was negative. Day 2 I felt worse so to be safe, I tested again. Positive. Now imagine how many people I could infect and make ill if I never tested at all. Long COVID is no joke even if the infection period is just a cold. Long-term, COVID has serious impacts on your heart, lungs, nervous system, and parasympathetic system. These symptoms may not appear for a year or longer, so you won't know until you're very ill and can't figure out why. Don't subject your community to that if you can avoid it, please. 🫁 First appointment at a new pulmonologist today. Regular battery of pulmonary function tests. Six minute walking test with a pulse oximeter. Everything “looks normal”. It doesn’t feel like it all. My lungs (8 hours later) now feel like they’re on fire, being stabbed, and in a vice grip all at once. My lungs got a workout. But I didn’t run. I didn’t overexert myself. Clearly something is wrong. Maybe pulmonary fibrosis. Maybe viral persistence. Maybe chronic inflammation. Maybe all of the above. Please, for the sake of your health and those you care about, protect yourselves this holiday. Open windows in your home if you have guests. Setup air purifiers. Limit the number of guests. That weeklong “cold” or “sinus infection” you have… probably not a cold. COVID IS NOT OVER. You do not want to want to feel the excruciating pain I’m in for even a minute. On the outside, I may look okay. But on the inside I feel like my body is dying. Such a small thing can make a big difference. Right now there is still a pandemic going on, and no matter how much we wish to be back to "normal", this is not over. Honestly, this is our new normal for a long time to come it seems. Now we are in the grip of cold/RSV, flu, and Covid season. Yes, Covid isn't going anywhere, but the hospitals are filling up and our healthcare system is strained and stretched beyond their capabilities. What can we do? Medical professionals and scientists have a list of ways to help: 1) wear a mask (in public/crowded places, especially indoors) 2) get vaccinated and boosted if you can (Flu and Covid-19) 3) proper ventilation is important 4) wash your hands 5) stay home and away from others when sick I know this is the same old messages we've be hearing for almost 3 years now, but it doesn't change the fact that we should be not only trying to take care of ourselves but others in our communities. Braved the "moderate" smoke last night to have a birthday dinner (hey my birthday is ready for celebration anytime you are! 😉) near UW with a very dear friend (thanks @racheldenys). The company was fantastic as always. The food was so yum (as always, thank you @aquaverde_cafe). The breathing, especially as an asthmatic, was not so great, even sitting I used my inhaler a few times. Global warming sucks. (Yes increased forest fires are a result of global warming, look it up.) And yes, both my friend and I used home covid tests within an hour of meeting, ate outside and stayed outside to chat. Why? Because it's still a covid pandemic. I'm still high risk. Watson and the river. Things have felt weird. Just got on Instagram to see a photo that made me so sad. I’m feeling so done with humans. With dishonest communication. With confusing communication. With hiding things that are important and how harmful it can be to live in silence when knowing there is so much below the surface of things that isn’t being talked about. But, as a child and as an adult, when I inelegantly tried to talk about these things, I was often shut down. Or the subject was changed. I see our culture this way. President Biden saying the ‘pandemic is over’ is a HUGE and HORRIBLE example of this. Pretending something is not there when we are still in a mass death and mass disabling event. Long COVID is real and when he says things like this, it is basically a smack in the face to all who are still losing loved ones and all who are still becoming disabled by this virus. Well… that went from personal to political real quick. LOL. That’s me. I grew up hearing messages that I was ‘too sensitive’ or that my expectations are ‘too high’ and I find myself in a situation again where I feel like I have to be the one to shine light on something(in actually more ways than one), but I’m tired. I’m tired of being the ‘crazy’ one and shining light when no one else will.
