Got around to watching this amazing 1972 black comedy film this evening. 2nd time viewed. Last night it was my second viewing of Richard Lester's 1968 bizarre post-apocalyptic The Bed Sitting Room, so it only felt natural to turn to this on the following night. Been meaning to watch them both again for some time. Like The Bed Sitting Room, The Ruling Class can be appreciated on a number of levels. I’d totally be up for a locked in party with Vincent Price and his satanic upper class cult. Considered the best movie of Roger Corman’s Poe anthology. We have what seems like two classic macabre tales in one: Masque of the Red Death with a hint of Hop Frog The colours are gorgeous channeling the very best of any Hammer production going around at that time. And the visuals… as ravishing as Rick Rude himself! TMOTRD brings you demonic ravens, inverted crosses and a psychedelic masquerade cult to name but a few gothic treats. “It’s time for a new dance to begin... the Dance of Death!” Prospero is brought by Vincent Price in all his ghoulish splendour. Although not quite Witchfinder evil, he certainly brings plenty of twitchy moustaches and arched eyebrows. Beautiful and horrifying. “And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” 7.5 ebony clocks out of 10.

Michael Caine plays special agent Harry Palmer. A brash, arrogant, against all authority spy who has to solve the murder of a bodyguard and the disappearance of a fellow agent. He is met with resistance every step of the way by his superiors while still collecting clues to the abducted agent. Nigel Green plays Major Daley, his new superior, who keeps a tight leash on Palmer, but secretly believes in his methods without letting him know. A solid cat and mouse game ensues with the agents and the kidnappers. Caine and Green have great chemistry as they starred just a few years earlier in Zulu. After the atrocities this ruler (Ingrid Pitt•The Wicker Man 1973) has committed, those fortunate enough to have survived now call her “Countess Dracula” (1971). Elisabeth Nadasdy (Pitt) is an elderly Hungarian countess who inadvertently discovers a rather unorthodox anti-aging treatment. This revelation sets a series of events into motions that will have horrific ramifications for those closest to our youth obsessed noblewoman. Director Peter Sasdy (Taste the Blood of Dracula 1970) derives inspiration from the folklore surrounding real life Countess Elizabeth Bathory de Ecsed (1560-1614) and runs with it in this rather engaging Hammer Film that plays out quite nicely. This twisted tale of romance, selfishness, conniving, and abuse is made all the more entertaining by a cast of highly competent thespians (including Nigel Green•Jason and the Argonauts 1963), bits of gore, and even some bared flesh for fan service. Zulu (1964): A+ Stanley Baker and Michael Caine are British officers in the story of the Battle of Rorke's Drift, in which 150 British soldiers defended their outpost against 4,000 Zulu warriors. This is an amazing story and one of my favorite films, the one in which I learned the word, "redoubt". It really holds up, with battle scenes that are absolutely gripping, even for the audiences of today. It's so much more meaningful to see the Zulu army populated with real people and not CGI multitudes. While the story is told from the British perspective, the Zulus are treated with great respect and awe, not as standard-issue bad guys. The scenic locations are sweeping and majestic. Baker and Caine (in his first major film role) are great, but Nigel Green, as Colour-Seargeant Bourne, is just delightful and steals every scene he's in.
