Black Thay village is considered the lucky one as they’re one of the first minority that migrated from China to north eastern mountains of Vietnam, over 200 years ago. Being the first they had a priority in choosing and securing their land so they stayed down the hills. Where the soil is softer and rice can grow easily. They didn’t escape wars for long. Some time after they arrived the French came and built the gate. The gate meant to keep minorities away from rest of the country. Or to keep Chinese away from the rest of the people. I didn’t quite get it. Either way people couldn’t cross mountains for trading so they started to starve. When people were trying to force the gate the French started to throw bombs at the hills and when they were out of the bombs Americans came handy and started to throw some more. Chinese didn’t want to get too involved so they were just shooting rockets from the other side of the border. Those rockets and those bombs exploded on the hills around the Black Thay village and killed all the trees. They did it so efficiently that the trees never grew back. It’s all just the bushes around the village. That caused a major problem because Black Thay build their houses from wood and wood only. And there was no more wood in the forest. But then Vietnamese came and borrowed Black Thay men to fight a war in Laos. The war was so secret that even Mrs Dung here on the picture, doesn’t know who were they fighting against. But we know it was Americans. Only a handful of men borrowed to fight this was ever came back to the village. A two-day training on Social Cohesion was organized by the Civil Society Support Program (CSSP) for Community Leaders Core Group in Hyderabad on May 7th and 8th, 2024. The training focused on interfaith harmony, social cohesion, and the crucial role of community leaders in identifying and addressing societal issues. It covered topics such as social cohesion, harmony, diversity, and inclusion; conflict mapping and management; the rights of religious minorities; and protection and referral mechanisms at the district level; and a session on the organization's complaint response mechanism. Community leaders from diverse religious backgrounds participated to discuss and recognize the significance of their collective contribution to societal betterment, understanding their pivotal role as community leaders in establishing peace within society. This training aimed to equip community leaders with essential skills and knowledge to promote greater understanding and collaboration among different religious and cultural groups. I’m Belén, a first-generation Latina DREAMer and soon-to-be PhD student at Weill Cornell Medicine. 🥳 My research interests revolve around harm reduction and substance use, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), and women’s health policy. Considered an “artistʼs artist” during her lifetime, Ruth Asawa (1926–2013) is now recognized as one of Americaʼs leading modernists. Born to Japanese immigrant farmers in California, she was detained in internment camps for Japanese Americans beginning in 1942–first at Santa Anita Assembly Center in California and then in Rohwer, Arkansas. While at Santa Anita, Asawa studied with professional artists previously employed as Disney animators. After her release from Rohwer in 1943, she studied to become an art teacher at Milwaukee State Teachers College before being denied her degree due to lingering anti-Japanese sentiment. In 1946, Asawa enrolled at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, the legendary progressive liberal arts school built on the legacy of Germanyʼs Bauhaus school. Asawaʼs teachers included Josef Albers and Buckminster Fuller, whose influence manifests in Asawaʼs wire constructions, which relate to Albersʼs design and paper-folding classes and Fullerʼs architecture. Her upbringing as a Zen Buddhist and the fusion of art and life matured at Black Mountain. She studied Japanese origami and calligraphy and practiced drawing daily; art education became an integral part of her life and philosophy. The drawing Untitled (MI.064, Rocking Chair) is made up of small square marks in a repeated pattern and drawn on both sides, creating lines that form the image of a Thonet-style rocking chair, abstract yet recognizable.
