Updated arm pics: Left - before surgery , Right - post op day #6. The bruising has been minimal in my arms. You can see a little difference in the shape then and I see a bit more this week. Today is post-op day #14. I tried on all of the blazers and blouses that my arms had outgrown tonight and I'm pleased that they all fit now. I'm very much looking forward to lifting weights again and watching my body respond appropriately to exercise. My Registered Dietitian is also my MLD therapist 🙌🏼 She is eager to help figure out what exactly is causing my inflammation so I can eliminate it in the future and keep my Lipedema progression paused (through food choices and other conservative therapies - which are essential for us lippy ladies forever - we have the genes!). In a couple of weeks, I will begin a 30 day eating plan consisting of lean meats, eggs, beans, nuts, some vegetables, sourdough bread, olives, avocados and dark chocolate. It's incredibly restrictive and will eliminate fruit and dairy completely (except avocado...I can have goat milk and cashew yogurt). Oh! and I will temporarily stop drinking oatmilk, which I drink in my coffee every day 🥴 Anyway, I won't start that until I'm down to 12 hr compression days...that would be wayyyy too much at once! Six weeks after my first surgery we travel back to California for my second surgery, this time my thighs. My daughter came along to help this time. We took a little time the day before surgery to see the sights. Surgery went well, but it was very long. Again only twilight and lidocaine. First half was Dr. Aria breaking up and removing the fibrosis and lipedema fat, second part of the surgery Dr. Moshrefi came in and reduced the skin. Pain was not bad at all. I used some of the pain meds, but mainly relied on Tylenol. Not as much fluid this time. We brought a toilet riser which helped keep the pressure off the thighs. They removed 14L and a lot of skin. My knees and thighs feel better than they have in 10 years. Pearl at ALT did three treatments of bandaging and some manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage. When we arrived at our hotel in California for the torso/pelvic girdle surgery, I had read enough from others that I knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep in that all white hotel bed after surgery. At first my husband thought I was being a little over the top. Once I got to the room after surgery he understood. Prior to surgery, we wrapped the white couch in trash bags, covered that with a black waterproof pet couch cover, then put the puddle pads over the arms and seats. I used a black sheet, black waterproof cover for the pillows, and black blanket and we put a waterproof fabric black shower curtain on the floor to catch all the fluid that drains after surgery. Even with this we were amazed at how much fluid I had during the first 48 hours. I also brought black towels. Make sure your hotel or Airbnb has laundry. Having the back on the couch actually helped me sleep. Very little pain. Just used some Tylenol. So thankful I only had twighlight and the lidocaine. So much easier to recover without general anesthesia. And after the surgery, all the pain in my lower back is gone! 11 liters of fibrosis, fat and liquid removed. First treatment step: physical therapy for complete decongestive therapy (CDT). I was fortunate to have a therapist who understood lipedema. She assessed that I was presenting with lipedema and not lymphedema because: no involvement of the feet, volume of each leg was within 1% of the other leg making them symmetrical, fibrous tissue under the skin, negative stemmer test (you can pinch skin on the foot), no standing edema. So I spent three weeks wrapped up to reduce the size of the calves to be fitted with compression socks the correct size. Here I am with my fantastic, supportive hubby. He’s been there for me even before I knew what was causing my health issues. Now that I am going through lipedema surgeries he has been my rock. I’ve had lipedema since I was 10 and diagnosed officially as stage 3 advanced in November 2023 at 55. 45 years of not knowing, progressive disease through puberty, birth control, two pregnancies and now perimenopause have taken their toll on my body. Now I can take control and stop sitting on the sideline of life. This Instagram page is to document that course and to help others going through this journey. Lipedema is a genetic connective tissue fat disorder that is characterized by large thighs and can also present in the calves, arms and even torso in later stages. The tissue growth is triggered by hormonal episodes in life such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause etc., it is rarely seen in males. I am advanced stage 3 out of 4 so the fibrosis and fat is everywhere at this point. It can’t be cured, but progression can be slowed by conservative treatment methods such as compression. Unfortunately I am past that and need three surgeries to break up the fibrotic tissue and remove that with some of the fat. The lipedema fat is different than other fat, in that it does not respond to exercise or diet regimens. This disease affects 11% of women but most do not know this as it is not a disease that is presented in American medical schools. In Europe they have been treating this for some time. Because it is so rarely treated here in the US I am traveling to California for my surgeries to the doctors that have developed this method of treatment. Dr Amron removed 6.5L of diseased tissue! 😅 Glad that crap is out of me. The pain has been very achy, from my hips to my ankles. I have tried to nap but am distracted by the discomfort so I am taking my pain medicine as it is available. The leakage is abundant 🌊 and more bloody than it was with my last surgery. My heart rate has been elevated since discharge (110 bpm) so I will mention that when I get the provider call tonight, as well as the drainage color. I am on track with drinking a gallon of water with electrolytes for the day. Will eat a steak Greek salad with lentil soup for dinner for much needed iron replacement. Tomorrow we’re driving to Essen and @lisu_med and @dr.h.majewski for the last time, I’ll be having my lowers and my belly operated on, to remove the lipedema fat in those areas. I’ve been looking forward to this surgery, because it puts a “period” on the past 8 months with surgeries and I can’t wait to finish! #medicalinducedliposuction is not a cure for lipedema, it will make me pain free, reset my stage to a lower one and give me back mobility. 🙌🏼 Post op day #32 for calves/ankles. 🙌🏼 2 days until my thigh surgery. 🙌🏼 4 days until my arm surgery. I wore a leggy dress (for me ☺️) and put on some kitten heels for a date with hubby last night. What fun! We were out for only a couple hours and I did swell a little bit so I was back in double compression today. My toes have been bare for a couple of months so I got a pedicure. It's nice to have some color, even though I won't see my toes very much after surgery. Busy today packing for the trip! A little lower leg progression….or regression, depending on your take. This marks two weeks since @davidamronmd removed lipedema from my calves and ankles. More than the physical/cosmetic transformation (until it’s time for new boot goofin, then I’m really going to be obnoxious), my lower legs feel lighter! That constant heaviness and throbbing of my calves and around my ankles at the end of the day seems to be gone! 🤯 I am losing my mind over the effects I feel already, so early on. Slide 1: Side by side Nov 2023/May 2024 Slide 2: November 2023 after a day of relaxing on a cruise ship Slide 3: November 2023 first thing in the morning. Before my legs touched the ground they were already swollen. Slide 4: Right after surgery Post Op Day 1 Slide 5: After a flight home and preparing for first shower Post Op Day 4 Slide 6: Post Op Day 7 at MLD and taking the foam wraps and bandaging off for the first time Slide 7: Post Op Day 11 had to remove the foam and unwrap to scratch or I was going insane. Slide 8: Post Op Day 12 getting to remain bandage free because I managed to lose more fluid even without them. 🙌 My MLD therapist showed me the measurements today and I wish I’d taken a photo so I could remember the data, but so far this week I’ve lost roughly 3cm in each of my ankles…that’s not even considering the starting point. I just took this picture of Merl, and all I can see are the shadows on my leg of the big lumpy lipoma I have. That's not a bruise and the pic is completely unfiltered. I didn't even up the contrast to make it easier to see. I remain convinced I have Dercum's as various medical professionals on here gave commented previously, but my rheumatologist, who had never heard of it and refused to look or examine me, confirmed to my Dr I don't have it, so no one will do anything now 🙄 It's the familiar theme of dismissal and ignorance. I was giving my usual lecture on lipoedema to my cleaner and it was hard explaining that it's very common, effecting 1 in every 9 women, and yet the majority of Dr's and nurses have never heard of it, and the rest say "you mean lymphedema" 🙄 I try really hard not to hold onto the anger about all the years I was gaslit by various doctors and nurses, but my trauma background has left me unable to express most emotions so I'm a bit rubbish at letting stuff out. I finally contacted a specialist to start the process of looking at my Lipoedema legs and arms because I've asked my primary care doc but he just shrugged off my questions.. Before I get to the stage of skin removal with weight loss, I want to make sure it's a good step to take.
