This week Jun and Daniel discuss the housing payment system of jeonse (전세), or key money deposit, that is unique to South Korea amongst all OECD countries. Roughly 50% of renters in Korea are living with a jeonse, and in 2022 the average jeonse price in Seoul was $500,000. For the first few months after moving to Korea, Daniel had to ask almost every Korean person he met about the jeonse system, because of how foreign and unsustainable it seemed. What is a jeonse, and how does it work? What are some other aspects of the Korean real estate ecosystem that work together with jeonse? How do Koreans and Americans think differently about real estate, at a very fundamental level? How do Koreans manage to get such a high deposit amount? What is appealing about this system to Koreans? What are the other options available to renters besides jeonse? What does the day of look like when Koreans move into a jeonse? What role do real estate agents play in Korea? Is there an equivalent to the escrow system that exists in America? What is an important factor in real estate investing that isn’t important in the US? What are the cracks that are beginning to appear in the jeonse system in particular, and the overall Korean real estate ecosystem more broadly? If you're interested in any of these questions, tune in to hear Daniel and Jun discuss all this and more! Also in this episode, Daniel and Jun discuss where in Seoul they would want to move, if they were to move out of their current city. Jajangmyeon and Sweet & Sour Pork takeout from @paiksnoodlepdx. If you grew up eating Korean-Chinese food (it’s its own thing), the menu will be very nostalgic. Also, some news to share… I will be curating and moderating a panel discussion on what it means to live and dream big as a Korean-American in today’s culture as part of the @legendarymakersmarket, taking place July 26-27 at the @reserartscenter in Beaverton, Oregon. I am truly honored to be included and to be considered a positive voice and advocate for Asian-Americans in Oregon and beyond. I hope you’ll join me in this discussion and support the good work being done by @asianamericantown. Thank you to founder @tomsollitt for believing in me and thinking of me for this opportunity. 📍Paik’s Noodles 9009 SW Hall Blvd. Unit 145, Portland, OR

Since this month is AAPI month, I tried to find some asian events in Monterey County, but I noticed the search became a bit of a needle in a haystack. This may be a personal thing, but unless you go to San Jose, i find it hard to break into the local asian network here. So I am trying to put together a rolodex of the different AAPI groups, individuals, and businesses in Monterey County to help advertise events (some are still old school paper advertising) and generally support my local asian community. 🌏🇰🇷🇯🇵🌺🇨🇳🇵🇭 🔊 Shout out to @makeusvisibleca for their overlapping quest to engage the local asian network and bring more Asian American history to K-12 education in the Monterey County. While I build my rolodex, I’m asking if anyone knows any groups or businesses I have not yet added to the list. You can either go the Google Form in the linktree in my bio or you can just tag them in a comment underneath. Thanks for all the help building this rolodex of where to go for Asian events and activation! 💪🙏 #montereycounty #seemonterey #aapimonth #korean #japanese #filipino #chinese #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocal #montereybay #asianamerican #representationmatters #bipoc #koreanamerican #chineseamerican #japaneseamerican #filipinoamerican #asianfood #asianbusiness #asiancommunity

This shirt is silk. This shirt is red. This shirt is from Korea. This shirt is from my childhood. I put it on Alice for the Asian Culture Fair that was held in Fairfax City on Sunday. I thought it would be fun for her to wear something “Asian-eee” All of a sudden her wearing it made me cry. Seeing this little girl wearing something that was mine, that I am passing down. That is MY culture, touched my heart in a way I was not even expecting. Someone asked me at mile 25 what country my flag represented. That was a good conversation. The finish line announcer via the mega speakers said, as we crossed hand in hand with the flag in the other that “this is the kind of inclusivity this race is about.” (Both of our jaws dropped). I heard a kid say to the adult next to them, look it’s the rainbow flag! Several people shouted GO PRIDE!!! If someone said something negative it never reached me. Couldn’t have hurt us anyway. We floated. It was our moment and you can’t burst Queer Joy, especially when you’ve trained for months and just run 26.2 miles together. Legs are recovered. Congratulations to our two newest Karen Ha Scholarship recipients: Grace and Ellen!  🎊🎉👏 Grace is graduating from Wilcox High School and will be studying Fine Arts at UC Irvine this fall. She impressed our scholarship committee with her resilience in overcoming personal adversity and her genuine passion for helping the Korean-American community through her volunteer work at her local church and Korean school. For Grace, art is both an outlet and a means of communication. She aspires to pursue a career in art therapy to help others in the same way that art has helped her. Ellen is graduating from Pioneer High School and plans to study public health (pre-med) at UC Merced. Ellen wowed the scholarship committee with her leadership and academic excellence, as well as her immense pride in being Korean American. Based on her personal experience of moving to the US and overcoming the language barrier at the age of six, Ellen is passionate about being an emphatic mentor to students through active listening and deep understanding of others. Ellen wants to pursue a healthcare career. Join us in congratulating Grace and Ellen as they embark on this exciting chapter of their lives. We look forward to witnessing their continued growth and success. 나에게 생일 축하해요 ⁽ʰᵃᵖᵖʸ ᵇⁱʳᵗʰᵈᵃʸ ᵗᵒ ᵐᵉ~⁾ ~~~~~~~~~ In celebration of my 23rd birthday and AAPI month, I wanted to cosplay Silk/Cindy Moon in a Korean hanbok. This has been my dream cosplay for a while after I got inspired by fan-art and variant covers. I am half-Korean and growing up in Korean culture has made a huge impact on my life. When I first got into cosplay 4 years ago, a friend told me about Silk, a Korean-American spider woman. Immediately I felt connected to this character and how she looks like me. This version of Silk is personal to me, as I want to share my love for the character and appreciation towards my Korean-American identity 🇰🇷🇺🇸~ Thank you to my mom for getting me a jeogori from Korea that I can draw on without feeling guilty about ruining 😅. And thank you to my spectacular boyfriend for taking my photos. I tried to shoot in different settings, so this is the first out of the 3 “sets” of photos we took! 💖 📸: @lens.lilicios (technically my bf but it’s my camera 😂) #marvel #marvelentertainment #silk #silkcosplay #cindymoon #cindymooncosplay #marvelcosplay #spiderman #spiderwoman #spiderverse #mcu #koreanamerican #spiderverse2 #intothespiderverse #hanbok #variant #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #aapicosplay

◆ ARC Review: Green Frog: Stories by Gina Chung
➤ Special thanks to the author & @vintagebooks for the free book. ◇ Synopsis

A collection of short stories delving into Korean American womanhood, bodies, animals, and transformation as a means of survival.  Mixing fantasy with reality, these tales feature talking dolls aiding twins in escaping a restrictive home, a heart boiling for a melancholy cure, and a fox demon seeking revenge for her sister’s death. Alongside these are stories of real-life struggles, like strained mother-daughter relationships and reevaluating legacies after loss. Chung captures emotions masterfully, with characters that linger in your heart long after reading. ◇ Thoughts
I enjoy reading collections of short stories and fables. Green Frog: Stories is a collection that focuses on Korean American emotions and events. It includes a mix of story types and genres, often with unique folkloric themes. What stood out to me the most was how the author portrayed deep characters and complex situations in such brief stories. Among my favorites were “The Arrow,” “Human Hearts,” “Rabbit Heart,” and “The Love Song of the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat.” ➤ This post contains a PR product.

It's May, which is famously AANHPI month 💅 So we're sharing a fav page from “sea and sky,” our story about threading together community in all the nonlinear ways so emblematic of diaspora. So much happens around the table — celebratory and mundane, from joy to grief and everything in between. This illustration is ode to family, both blood and chosen, and the ever-evolving ties among us seated at the table. 🍽 What does your table look like? You can read the full story on our website or nab a copy of your own via our ongoing very special prints + books deal! in limbo // deb jj lee | 4.8/5 🎓 favorite line: “i want what they have.” in limbo is the story of a young korean american woman going through high school and on a journey of self discovery. with an emotionally abusive mother and no way of guidance in her life, she experiences dramatic changes and must learn to overcome to keep the friendships she’s fallen into. unfortunately, not everything will stay the same… this was a sweet book full of rollercoasters. this poor girl thinking that she is the battering ram of emotional abuse and friends leaving her discovers that her ways of coping aren’t healthy in any way and that she really is the reason that she isn’t thriving as much as she can. the end of the book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger leaving it open to the readers imagination, but the book is truly excellent at portraying high schoolers who were forced to grow up too fast and not learn to regulate their emotions. great fast read! #book #books #booksta #bookstagram #booktok #fiction #asianamerican #koreanamerican #graphicnovel #novel #read #readmore #ya #youngadult

• Story time for Mental Health Awareness Month & AANHPI Heritage Month • I learned I have CPTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) about 2 years ago thanks to my therapist. I had only heard of PTSD before that, but once I learned more about CPTSD, so much about me and my life made more sense. I gained so much more clarity about my tendencies, dispositions, and various physical ailments. And I only recently shared with my umma about it and that I’ve been in therapy for the past couple of years. I introduced the term 복합 외상후 스트레스 장애 (CPTSD) to her, and she asked what that meant. I referred to a Korean drama we were watching at the time called Doctor Slump; one of the main characters deals with PTSD throughout the show. I said it’s kind of like what you saw with him but different… and instead of one traumatic event like in the K-drama, it’s multiple traumas, chronic, and long-term for me. Her face fell as her mind recalled some of the many traumas I’ve endured, and she said, “엄마 잘못 만나서…지켜주지 못 했네” which essentially translates to “If only you had a better mother… I didn’t protect you well enough…” I immediately responded that this was not her fault, and that the things that happened to me just happened to me. I told her I was sharing all this with her, not so she can feel guilty, but so that she can know me a bit better. But I could still see the pain in her eyes. I reiterated that my sharing is not to fault her (because it’s not her fault that I have CPTSD) but to invite her into my ongoing journey. It’s just that multiple traumas happened to me, and I’m working towards healing through many ways, including therapy. My umma did what she could, with what she had and what she knew, to raise me. I had her repeat after me: “엄마 잘못이 아니다. 안타깝게… 그냥 세미에게 일어난 일들이다“ ”It’s not my fault. Things just unfortunately happened to Sami.” Was she the perfect parent? No, because who honestly is. But there is much grace to know that even with the intergenerational hurts in our relationship, my CPTSD is still not her fault. It was not possible for her to have protected me from everything. #celebrateaapi Prompt 1: Identity Like @riritamuradesign & @jojowangdesigns, fellow co-hosts of this drawing challenge, I’ve always struggled with identity. Not being American enough, or being Korean enough or vice versa. Depending if I’m in Korea or in the states, I’ve always embraced both sides proudly. Immersing myself in Asian American studies classes in college, making sure I took part in cultural events, or just sitting on the sofa watching Korean TV with my parents to learn the language, there’s never been a time where I don’t feel Korean or American. And second generation experience is very specific so our identity is a mix of our parents trying to have us fit in and also trying to keep our heritage alive in our household. No matter the struggle or celebration, it’s clear, being Asian American is a joy. This illustration depicts two females hugging each other with the idea that there is support and we’re connected. One female is dressed in a hanbok and the other in western clothing, both with braids which was a symbolic hairstyle in Korea long ago. Being intertwined is a way for me to show that both sides of me are embracing and learning to grow together in this identity. Based on a true story in the family history of @annsukwang, this picture book debut is just as relevant of a story today as it was during that moment in time. The House Before Falling Into the Sea tells of the plight of the refugees fleeing the North Korean and Chinese troops during the Korean War and a family that graciously hosted, housed, and fed them. Ann’s hope is that the story “inspires you and the children in your life to be brave, to move gently with yourself and each other through tough times, and to take whatever small steps you can today to begin building a better future tomorrow.” • • • #korean #koreanamerican #picturebook #storiesforkids #storiesforchildren #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #childrensbooks

Born in Toronto, Ontario, CAN, on Feb. 20, 1977, Korean-Canadian, Gail Kim would make her debut in the world of professional wrestling in December 2000. She would later be signed by WWE in 2002, having vignettes of her appearance, before finally showing up on an episode of WWE Raw and would go on to winning the WWE Women’s Championship on her debut, being the first-ever WWE Diva to do so. She would later sign with TNA-Wrestling in 2005, after being released by WWE, she began managing America’s Most Wanted, then eventually becoming the inaugural TNA Knockouts Champion, winning it a record 7 occasions in the course of her time there. Her feud against Awesome Kong set the bar as to not only the women’s division, but professional wrestling as a whole and is one of the most talked about rivalry’s in TNA Wrestling history. She did return to WWE and was there from 2008-2011 before eventually going back with TNA where she retired on April 28, 2019 and was inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame. She has been ranked as the No. 1 talent in PWI’s Female 50. Along with her other accomplishments she has received in TNA, she also won the TNA Knockouts Tag Team titles with Madison Rayne. WWE had mentioned Kim as the top 50 female performers in the company of all time too. She left her mark in the industry and though no longer competing in the ring, she holds the position of a producer and creative in TNA, as well as being an on-screen talent from time to time.
