My Halloween costume for this year maybe :3 I was talking to one of my partners about Halloween costumes and maybe being cryptids so I started looking at the different kinds to see what one I’d wanna be then I came across the barghest. I originally heard of the barghest from “Hilda” on Netflix and thought it would be cool to dress up as a kind of “giant demonic dog” —(Barghest, in folklore of northern England (especially Yorkshire), a monstrous, goblin dog, with huge teeth and claws, that appears only at night. It was believed that those who saw one clearly would die soon after, while those who caught only a glimpse of the beast would live on, but only for some months. The Demon of Tidworth, the Black Dog of Winchester, the Padfoot of Wakefield, and the Barghest of Burnley are all related apparitions. Their Welsh counterparts were red-eyed Gwyllgi, the Dog of Darkness, and Cwn Annwn, the Dogs of Hell. In Welsh oral tradition, the gwyllgi is a frightful apparition. It appears as a black huge mastiff or wolf, with a baleful breath and blazing red eyes which shine like fire in the night. One reputedly haunted the lane leading from Mousiad to Lisworney-Crossways, another a field called the Cot Moor, and a third the pit at Pant y Madog near Laugharne, Carmanthenshire. Black Dogs are a common feature of British (especially English) folklore, and features of individual black dogs may differ from one legend to the next, but on the whole they are either omens of, bringers of, or protectors from death. The majority of black dogs are much larger than a domestic dog - some even large enough to block passage for a fishing boat - with glowing red eyes.
