It’s amazing what a simple phone camera can capture. Walking through a local park we came across some old remains of the gunpowder mills in Ballincollig, Cork, Ireland. Beautiful to the eye, but small adjustments to a photo can bring out the mystery of the remaining buildings. These gunpowder mills were a significant industrial complex during the 19th century. The mills played a crucial role in the production of gunpowder for military and civilian use. They were established in the early 18th century and operated until the early 20th century. However, the mills also posed significant safety risks due to the volatile nature of gunpowder production. Today, the remains of the gunpowder mills dot the Ballincollig regional park which families enjoy walks through every day. What a change it’s gone through! #ruins #gunpowdermills #ballincollig

Anti-tank cylinders, Boxhill Moving downwards at the bottom edge of Boxhill along the river Mole lies 12 anti-tank cylinders, perched on the edge of the riverbank. Pillbox type 22, Surrey Here lies a type 22 pillbox located beneath the Surrey Hills and Boxhill, representing the last remains of the British GHQ line The British Army had abandoned most of its equipment in France after the Dunkirk evacuation. It was therefore decided to build a static system of defensive lines around Britain, designed to compartmentalise the country and delay the Germans long enough for more mobile forces to counter-attack. Over 50 defensive lines were constructed across the country. Box Hill Fort In the 1890s a series of 13 mobilisation centres were built to protect London from an invasion from the European continent. One of these was built on Box Hill. The fort covered an area of 6 acres and included an infantry redoubt plus ammunition storage for mobile field artillery to use. Box Hill, ad the other 12 centres, were made redundant in 1905. Although the Chilworth works were taken over by the Admiralty during World War One, most Admiralty structures were demolished at the war’s end, and the mills finally closed in 1920. Although a large majority of buildings were demolished in the 20th century, more than 100 key buildings still remain within this Surrey Hills site. Most visible surviving components date to the 1880s-1890s. Part of an associated water management system, a packhorse bridge and the remains of a tramway are also included. The remains are owned by Guildford Borough Council, who have a duty of care to protect this designated monument. This is the most visited tourist spot of the Chitradurga fort. These four huge, circular grinding stones are called Maddu-Beesuva-Kallu which means ‘gunpowder (blowing) stone’ as they were used to prepare gunpowder. Each set of grinder (chakki, चक्की) has an independent chamber below to collect the powder which was then shifted to the magazines nearby. Made of granite, the grinders are in the lower part of the fort (not very far from the entry gate) and can be assigned to the third quarter of the 18th century. Located in the cardinal directions (E-W-N-S), sitting on massive beams, the diameter of each stone wheel is 1.50m which is quite impressive. The husband-in-the-middle photograph will help you understand how huge this setup is (he is 5’8). The circular pit in the centre was the rotating space for men or animal, probably elephant, which was used to turn the mill stones faster and make the process more efficient. The Ballincollig Gunpowder Mills, Cork. The Ballincollig Gunpowder Mills first started operating in 1794. It was privately owned then but sold to the Bristish Government in 1805 and production ceased in 1903. Ballincollig Royal Gunpowder Mills was one of three Royal gunpowder mills that manufactured gunpowder for the British Government and it was the second largest to exist. At one point up to 500 workers were employed here! Due to the nature of the manufacturing process at the Powder Mills there were a number of explosions.. these included an explosion on 25th August 1809 that killed 5 workers. The following year, November 1810 a major explosion at Brandy Lane in Cork City demolished 3 houses and set others on fire ..19 people were killed. This explosion was caused by gunpowder that had been stolen from the Ballincollig Powder Mills being dried at home.. in front of the fire! In the period from 1859 to 1863 three further explosions killed twelve workers. In 1974 the site was bought by Cork County Council and transformed into the Ballincollig Regional Park. It's free to access and the remains of some of the 100 surviving buildings can be made out in the trees. P L A Y O R D A T E: T H E R O Y A L G U N P O W D E R M I L L S It's back! I haven't been to @gunpowdermills since my nephews were tiny (they're now huge), so I've been looking forward to taking my own kids and it's better than I remembered! The Royal Gunpowder Mills in #walthamabbey is an important heritage site steeped in history. There is so much to do and there really is something for everyone! The site is set in 170 acres of parkland and you're likely to see deer and other wildlife during your visit. There's lots to do and a lovely picnic and play area so you can make a day of it. The interactive displays are incredible. There's loads of information, fantastic for older children and adults, but for the littlies there are so many hands-on activities that my big boy was fully engaged. Even my littlest got involved. We all spent about half an hour 'digging' sulphur... 😂. We tried both the train and the tractor and again absolutely loved how it catered for all ages. The tour guide on the tractor gave a really informative talk on the history of the site whilst children were given activity sheets to see what they could spot on the journey. Win for both parents and kids! And now for the big draw... (for me, anyway)... Professor Nitrate. Somebody give that man a TV show. He's amazing! I remember years ago thinking the Professor was fantastic and I think it's still the same guy! He is Cbeebies good. Better. Honestly, everyone has to see his shows! And they're included in the ticket! We loved making our own rockets and firing them too in the rocket lab; such a simple yet effective activity that my oldest was thrilled with. The staff were there to help and it was such an exciting experience! Obviously the topics of gunpowder and war can lead to quite adult conversations, so we kept it focused on fireworks and scientific explosions (in the style of Professor Nitrate) for our 3yo. It's a sensitive subject, but the museum is full of very interesting information that has shaped history and they are prepped for kids with knowledgeable staff and an extensive schools programme. 📍EN9 1JY 🚘 Free car park 💷 £10 adults, £8 children 🕑 11am to 4.30 pm
