Finally! Finally! My garden is getting a move along. It can feel so disheartening when I put so much time and effort into the soil, care for and raise seedlings, plant them out, water them, chat words of growth encouragement… to still have to plant back ups from the nursery as despite my best efforts, things don’t always go to plan. I love seeing everyone else’s harvests and successes and even though I have (mild) pangs of jealousy, it spurs me on! Beans are my jam-I can grow the heck outta those but here is my first ripening tomatoes, chilli (the plant is loaded and I’ve already been eating them) and cucumber flowering. 🥳🍅🥒🌶️ #gardening #gardensuccess #gardenfailures #growyourown #cucumbers #tomatoes #chilli #growyourfood #backyardgardening #lovegardening #eatwgatyougrow #eatfresh #growwithoutchemicals #freshproduce #canberragarden #sideplot #backyardveggies #backyardgarden #gardeningmakesmehappy #igrewthis #igrewthisfromseeds #lovegrowsinthisgarden #gungahlingardener #canberragarden #growinginthesuburbs #growwhatyoulove #eatwhatyougrow #cbr #givingitago #timeandpatience #gardenstaketime

Early morning harvest of homegrown lettuce and parsley. Although I took some shortcuts and didn't start these bunches from seeds, the flavour is far more vibrant than supermarket lettuce. When I get a quick minute, which isn't much at the moment, I love to pair lettuce with this zesty kick sauce. Oh, and a little sprinking of feta. Ingredients: Salsa verda Half a bunch of flat-leaf parsley 1 tablespoon capers 1 clove garlic 1 teaspoon caster sugar ½ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 ½ tablespoons white wine vinegar Instructions: Wash and dry the parsley thoroughly, ensuring it's free from any dirt or debris. Finely chop the parsley and place it in a bowl. Drain and chop the capers into small pieces. Peel and mince the garlic clove finely. In a separate bowl, combine the chopped parsley, capers, minced garlic, caster sugar, extra virgin olive oil, and white wine vinegar. Mix the ingredients well to ensure an even distribution of flavours. Taste the salsa verde and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or sugar according to your preference. Refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavours to meld. . . . #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #thewildodysseygarden #homegrownveggies   #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat #smallcharmfarm #natureandnourish #ohthislandofmine #alltheprettyhomsteads #zone10bgardening #iamcountry #offgrid

It doesn't need to be fancy or complicated; sometimes simplicity is better. That's exactly where we'll begin this season—with just a couple of potting mix bags and some basic quick succession crops. We even cheated a bit and skipped growing them from seed, but the most important part here is to keep our 4-year-old fully engaged and help them understand the value of homegrown produce. It's been nearly two years since I last nurtured a garden. I eagerly welcome the daily rituals of watering and tending, as I watch the transformation from earth to table. I dream of the future vegetable patch, with permanent raised beds, and an abundance of produce to be canned, dried, and fermented. It's the act of growing that truly makes every season worthy and intentional. . . . #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #thewildodysseygarden #homegrownveggies  #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat #smallcharmfarm #natureandnourish #ohthislandofmine #alltheprettyhomsteads #zone10bgardening #iamcountry #offgrid

The flowering of the golden wattle tree marks the sign of a new season of life, spring . They bloom for such a short time, almost as quickly as they appear. I only wish these bursts of sun-coloured flowers had stayed around a little longer on our land. The wattle is a unifying symbol and emblem for all Australians, representing the land and its people for more than a century. It is also a nutritional powerhouse with a deep, rich, nutty flavour. I love it on yogurt. Additionally, it has a cultural history dating back thousands of years for Indigenous Australians as a source of food, medicine, and tools. The longer I have stayed in Australia, I have learned small elements of the traditions of our First Nations people, their intimate ways of conserving nature, and their deeply rooted respect for living in harmony with the seasons. During the recent school holidays, we attended a traditional dance and Dreamtime workshop. My favourite takeaway from that experience was the principle of taking only what you need and always giving back more than you take. I believe this idea resonates as a metaphor for all aspects of our lives, but most defintely when it comes to nature. . . . #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #thewildodysseygarden homegrownveggies  #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat #smallcharmfarm #natureandnourish #ohthislandofmine #alltheprettyhomsteads #zone10bgardening #iamcountry #offgrid #wattletree #nativeplants #australia

Surrounded by cascading rolling hills and valleys, I used to park my car in this very spot, enjoying my lunch, sipping tea, and sharing a friendly chat and a pat with this horse on my way to one of my many cleaning jobs, not so long ago. It has been precisely one year since I left my job as an independent cleaner. After spending most of this week absorbed in spring cleaning my own house, I've come to realise just how strenuous my previous work used to be. In the last six months, I've received several offers to return to cleaning work, including one just a few weeks ago. However, my intuition keeps telling me not to return, as I may risk getting trapped in this role forever. Other plans are on the horizon, promising greater longevity and brings more value for me. It's essential in life to hold on for those long-term goals rather than taking the option that seems the most accessible for short-term gains. In the meantime, the current season of life as a stay at home mum demands many hours and often involves restless nights, but it's all a labour of love. Soon, we will be adding to the fun, sowing and planting, and running around the veggie patch chasing an adventurous boy. And of course, my hat's off to all those hardworking cleaners out there, with their noses to the grindstone, diligently cleaning away—I can relate! I have saved all my cleaning tips under SPRING CLEAN in the highlights. . . . . #thewayweliveinthecountry #countryliving #sheinthegarden   #gardeningaustralia  #thewildodysseygarden homegrownveggies  #learnasyougrow   #showustheland  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #smallcharmfarm #natureandnourish #ohthislandofmine #alltheprettyhomsteads #zone10bgardening #iamcountry #offgrid

Happy first week of spring to all our friends in the southern hemisphere! The outdoor season is upon us, and we are already making plans for the warmer months ahead and what realistically we can achieve over the next 6 months in this rather barren paddock we find ourselves in. One of our primary and most important tasks on the agenda is addressing the issue of these tenacious, overgrown invasive plants. Some of them took root even before we arrived here 18 months ago, while others decided to join the party more recently, sprouting up all over the land at an alarming rate. I'll be keeping a little vlog here to show you our journey with the land while still protecting and restoring the ecosystem. . . . . #thisisbiosecruity #biosecruityvictoria #invasiveplants #invasivespieces #victoria #australia #sheinthegarden #plantlife #gardeningthroughtheseasons #gardeningaustralia #thewildodysseygarden homegrownveggies #seedtotable #learnasyougrow #plantpowered #showusthegarden #myhomesteadharvest #australiagardens #suburbanhomestead #growinginthesuburbs #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat #smallcharmfarm #natureandnourish #ohthislandofmine #alltheprettyhomsteads #zone10bgardening #iamcountry #offgrid

Little by little, week by week, progression unfolds. The land slowly transforms as tidying efforts persist by the man in the driving seat who always has such a clear vision for it all. I've dedicated myself to indoor tasks over the past few months, bringing some kind of resemblance of order to our belongings—organising what can be managed, given the absence of many pieces of fitted furniture yet to be constructed. Numerous boxes filled with belongings were left untouched; pregnancy and the fatigue of caring for a newborn left me with little capacity to tend those extra jobs that comes along with a renovation. However, a task we eagerly anticipated has finally happened. In the last month, the ground was prepped, holes were dug, and the boundary trees have arrived ready for planting. It's all very exciting but lots of hard work as well for us both in different ways. . . #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #auatralianaspring  #wethe homesteaders  #sowingasimplelife  #awildcraftmood #curingfoods   #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs  #sustainablelivingtips #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat #smallcharmfarm #natureandnourish

Last year I had these beautiful sunflowers and I’m trying to grow them again but birds are trying to destroy them before they even get half grown. They nipped my corn sprouts too and got my tomato seeds. I’ve replaced and covering with bird netting but not sure how much this will work. Any suggestions? . . . #homesteading #growingsunflowers🌻 #birdproblems #suburbangarden #suburbanhomestead #alabamahomestead #growinginthesuburbs #makingdo

Today we took a little trip back to a nature strip we discovered last year where we found some established olive trees that were over loaded with ripened olives, many of which were already dropping to the ground and left to decay. I feel like this is a common sight in Melbourne, olives just all going to waste yet we all find ourselves buying them weekly at the markets. So last year after a tonne of reading and research I decided to give homecured olives ago, I was so taken back how easy the process of curing really was and I hope by sharing the process will encourage someone out there to just give it a crack. Maybe you find yourself living in a place where olives grow in abundance or you have a family or friend who has a olive tree in their garden. I'm starting off with a few fundamentals I have learnt so far with harvesting, so slide right on the photos for more info If you find yourself abit of a guru on this subject please share the knowledge below 🙏 . . . #inseasonnow #seasonaltales #seasonalismplicity #seasonalstories #realfoods #foodiecreative #storyofmytable #appetitejournal #thewildodysseyeats #gardeningaustralia #auatralianaspring #wethehomesteaders #sowingasimplelife #olivepicking #homecuredolives #olives #awildcraftmood #olivetrees #learnasyougrow #showusthegarden #myhomesteadharvest #australiagardens #suburbanhomestead #growinginthesuburbs #sustainablelivingtips #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat

The last days Just 9 days to go until the big move, spending those final few days celebrating in our favourite parks, cafes and other local haunts. 5 years is a long time to live somewhere that doesn't really feel like home but my life has radically changed for the better, so a girl can only assume to trust the process and feel this was the way it was meant to be. In the 10 years I been in Melbourne I have had a chance to really come to understand what it is to be a Melburnian, from city living to various suburb with each location containing its own local delights. Melbourne is such a melting pot of ethnicity and the rich tapestry of culture that all the different people bring to this city. I have no doubt that a new stomping ground will provide a whole new aspect on life. The big move for 2022  Just sitting here quietly dreaming about our new home, moving begins in just a 19 days time. Looking forward to building a pretty new chicken house, veggie patch, a kitchen which actually has sunlight, a laundry room and proper storage. It has been a long time since I lived in a home I could call my own. During my gypsy years like most travelling I found myself in travel lodges, backpacker hostels and renting out temporary rooms it was such fun to keeping moving from place to place. When I arrived in Melbourne close to 10 years ago I found myself in various rentals since, but finally life has moved forward and I have let go of the gypsy person who just couldn't stop seeking out new horizons and now I find the prospect of setting up a permanent home and mini homestead just the way we want it is beyond exciting. #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #auatralianaspring  #wethehomesteaders  #sowingasimplelife  #olivepicking #homecuredolives #olives #awildcraftmood #curingfoods #olivetrees #homegrownveggies  #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs  #sustainablelivingtips #homesteadinglife #thehappygardenlife #growwhatyoueat # #happyfarmily

Mother nature has imposed a freakishly hot summer upon us, everything in nature is looking a little wilted and sun scorched right now. I take relief in the early morning coolness before the sun creeps higher with that furnace style heat accompanied by its dear friend humidity, which beats down on us so savagely.  Melting was a real possibility this afternoon whilst hanging out 4 loads of washing. Dogs, todddler and I hastily ran back inside to appreciate the modern wonders of aircon and a good movie. #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia   #sowingasimplelife  #awildcraftmood  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australialandscapes   #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs  #littlebylittlewegrow #collectivelyrural #iamcountryside #countryeveryafter #australiansummer #inthegarden

Picking, prepping and curing olive's turns out to be much easier than we anticipated even for novice's of the homesteading world, maybe it was beginner's luck but the olive's turned out perfect on the first go! Minimal equipment and fuss was needed.  I give praise to a past generation of hard working Italians who descended onto the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne a few decades ago and began to plant hundreds of olive trees in the parks, community centers and sidewalks. It's really not hard to find an olive tree around these parts that is not bursting full with bountiful amounts of Olive's come the end of summer.  I will be starting this process again in just a few months time and I will be carefully documenting my process that I can repeat for years to come and of course share with you the exact method we used.  These little black gems were picked at summers end and were fully cured towards the end of the year which made wonderful small gifts to give out to family during the festive period, as I always say the best gifts are the homemade ones.  #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #auatralianaspring  #wethehomesteaders  #sowingasimplelife  #olivepicking #homecuredolives #olives #awildcraftmood #curingfoods #olivetrees homegrownveggies  #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs  #wholefoods  #cleaneating  #yuminthetum  #eatclean  #foodie_features

A little flash back to when my veggie patch was nothing more but a plot of weeds. Nothing much has been happening in my garden lately I have struggled to find any level of real enthusiasm knowing that soon we will be leaving this block of land for a more permanent set up. We do have some small strawberry plants, rainbow chard, spinach, onion, dwarf bush beans, Scarlett runner beans, leeks, tomatoes, beets, kale and parsley growing right now. I plan to plant out some quick succession crops just to keep going with growing until we leave, or course we have no idea when our new chapter will commence and it's been hard to plan what to actually grow for this season as time lines seem to change in this process of home ownership. I want to know the best quick easy grow crops you have enjoyed ? . . . . #sheinthegarden  #plantlife  #gardeningthroughtheseasons  #gardeningaustralia  #auatralianaspring  #wethehomesteaders  #sowingasimplelife  #homegrownveggies  #seedtotable  #learnasyougrow  #plantpowered  #showusthegarden  #myhomesteadharvest  #australiagardens  #suburbanhomestead  #growinginthesuburbs  #wholefoods  #cleaneating  #yuminthetum  #eatclean  #foodie_features  #awildcraftmood
